This work introduces the Elliptica pseudo-spectral code for generating initial data of binary neutron star systems. Building upon the recent Elliptica code update, we can now construct initial data using not only piecewise polytropic equations of state, but also tabulated equations of state for these binary systems. Furthermore, the code allows us to endow neutron stars within the binary system with spins. These spins can have a magnitude close to the mass shedding limit and can point in any direction.
Numerical studies of the dynamics of gravitational systems, e.g., black hole-neutron star systems, require physical and constraint-satisfying initial data. In this article, we present the newly developed pseudo-spectral code Elliptica, an infrastructure for construction of initial data for various binary and single gravitational systems of all kinds. The elliptic equations under consideration are solved on a single spatial hypersurface of the spacetime manifold. Using coordinate maps, the hypersurface is covered by patches whose boundaries can adapt to the surface of the compact objects. To so…
We compute the axial quasi-normal modes of static neutron stars in scalar tensor theory. In particular, we employ various realistic equations of state including nuclear, hyperonic and hybrid matter. We investigate the fundamental curvature mode and compare the results with those of General Relativity. We find that the frequency of the modes and the damping time are reduced for the scalarized neutron stars. In addition, we confirm and extend the universal relations for quasi-normal modes known in General Relativity to this wide range of realistic equations of state for scalarized neutron stars …
We select 37 most common and realistic dense matter equation of states to integrate the general relativistic stellar structure equations for static spherically symmetric matter configurations. For all these models, we check the compliance of the acceptability conditions that every stellar model should satisfy. It was found that some of the non-relativistic equation of states violate the causality and/or the dominant energy condition and that adiabatic instabilities appear in the inner crust for all equation of state considered.
The frequencies of r-mode oscillations of rotating neutron stars can be useful for guiding and interpreting gravitational wave and electromagnetic observations. The frequencies of slowly rotating, barotropic, and non-magnetic Newtonian stars are well known, but subject to various corrections. After making simple estimates of the relative strengths of these corrections we conclude that relativistic corrections are likely to be the most important. For this reason we extend the formalism of K. H. Lockitch, J. L. Friedman, and N. Andersson [Phys. Rev. D 68, 124010 (2003)], who consider relativisti…
This paper is devoted to the computation of compact binaries composed of one black hole and one neutron star. The objects are assumed to be on exact circular orbits. Standard 3+1 decomposition of Einstein equations is performed and the conformal flatness approximation is used. The obtained system of elliptic equations is solved by means of multi-domain spectral methods. Results are compared with previous work both in the high mass ratio limit and for one neutron star with very low compactness parameter. The accuracy of the present code is shown to be greater than with previous codes. Moreover,…
In the present paper we study the oscillations of fast rotating neutron stars with realistic equations of state (EoS) within the Cowling approximation. We derive improved empirical relations for gravitational wave asteroseismology with f-modes and for the first time we consider not only quadrupolar oscillations but also modes with higher spherical order (l=|m|=3,4). After performing a systematic comparison with polytropic EoS, it is shown that the empirical relations found in this case approximately also hold for realistic EoS. Even more, we show that these relations will not change significan…
We present a derivation of the basic equations and boundary conditions for relativistic static spherically symmetric stars (SSSS) in the model of minimal dilatonic gravity (MDG) which offers an alternative and simultaneous description of the effects of dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) using one dilaton field $Φ$. The numerical results for a realistic equation of state (EOS) MPA1 of neutron matter are presented for the first time. The three very different scales, the Compton length of the scalar field $λ_Φ$, the star's radius $r^*$, and the finite radius of the MDG Universe $r_{U}$ are a s…
We consider the effect of scalarization on static and slowly rotating neutron stars for a wide variety of realistic equations of state, including pure nuclear matter, nuclear matter with hyperons, hybrid nuclear and quark matter, and pure quark matter. We analyze the onset of scalarization, presenting a universal relation for the critical coupling parameter versus compactness. We find that the onset and the magnitude of the scalarization are strongly correlated with the value of the gravitational potential (the metric component $g_{tt}$) at the center of the star. We also consider the moment-o…
We study the solution space of general relativistic, axisymmetric, equilibria of differentially rotating neutron stars with realistic, nuclear equations of state. We find that different types of stars, which were identified by earlier works for polytropic equations of state, arise for realistic equations of state, too. Scanning the solution space for the sample of realistic equations of state we treat, we find lower limits on the maximum rest masses supported by cold, differentially rotating stars for each type of stars. We often discover equilibrium configurations that can support more than 2…
We incorporate realistic, tabulated equations of state into fully relativistic simulations of magnetized neutron stars along with a neutrino leakage scheme which accounts for cooling via neutrino emission. Both these improvements utilize open-source code (GR1D) and tables from http://stellarcollapse.org. Our implementation makes use of a novel method for the calculation of the optical depth which simplifies its use with distributed adaptive mesh refinement. We present various tests with and without magnetization and preliminary results both from single stars and from the merger of a binary sys…
It has been conjectured that in head-on collisions of neutron stars (NSs), the merged object would not collapse promptly even if the total mass is higher than the maximum stable mass of a cold NS. In this paper, we show that the reverse is true: even if the total mass is {\it less} than the maximum stable mass, the merged object can collapse promptly. We demonstrate this for the case of NSs with a realistic equation of state (the Lattimer-Swesty EOS) in head-on {\it and} near head-on collisions. We propose a ``Prompt Collapse Conjecture'' for a generic NS EOS for head on and near head-on colli…
We study axial quasinormal modes of static neutron stars in the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski theory. We focus on the fundamental curvature mode, which we analyse for ten different equations of state with different matter content. A comparison with the results obtained in pure General Relativity reveals that, apart from modifying the spectrum of the frequencies and the damping times of the stars, this theory modifies several universal relations between the modes and physical parameters of the stars, that are otherwise matter-independent.
In this work we discuss the time-evolution of nonspherical perturbations of a nonrotating neutron star described by a realistic Equation of State (EOS). We analyze 10 different EOS for a large sample of neutron star models. Various kind of generic initial data are evolved and the corresponding gravitational wave signals are computed. We focus on the dynamical excitation of fluid and spacetime modes and extract the corresponding frequencies. We employ a constrained numerical algorithm based on standard finite differencing schemes which permits stable and long term evolutions. Our code provides …
We have recently developed a neutron star model fulfilling global and not local charge neutrality, both in the static and in the uniformly rotating cases. The model is described by the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas- Fermi (EMTF) equations, in which all fundamental interactions are accounted for in the framework of general relativity and relativistic mean field theory. Uniform rotation is introduced following the Hartle's formalism. We show that the use of realistic parameters of rotating neutron stars obtained from numerical integration of the self-consistent axisymmetric general relativisti…
Thermal dominated X-ray spectra of neutron stars in quiescent transient X-ray binaries and neutron stars that undergo thermonuclear bursts are sensitive to mass and radius. The mass-radius relation of neutron stars depends on the equation of state that governs their interior. Constraining this relation accurately is thus of fundamental importance to understand the nature of dense matter. In this context we introduce a pipeline to calculate realistic model spectra of rotating neutron stars with hydrogen and helium atmospheres. An arbitrarily fast rotating neutron star with a given equation of s…
Simulations of binary neutron stars have seen great advances in terms of physical detail and numerical quality. However, the spin of the neutron stars, one of the simplest global parameters of binaries, remains mostly unstudied. We present the first, fully nonlinear general relativistic dynamical evolutions of the last three orbits for constraint satisfying initial data of spinning neutron star binaries, with astrophysically realistic spins aligned and anti-aligned to the orbital angular momentum. The initial data is computed with the constant rotational velocity approach. The dynamics of the …
An approach to general relativity based on conformal flatness and quasiequilibrium (CFQE) assumptions has played an important role in the study of the inspiral dynamics and in providing initial data for fully general relativistic numerical simulations of coalescing compact binaries. However, the regime of validity of the approach has never been established. To this end, we develop an analysis that determines the violation of the CFQE approximation in the evolution of the binary described by the full Einstein theory. With this analysis, we show that the CFQE assumption is significantly violated…
This paper reports on our effort in modeling realistic astrophysical neutron star binaries in general relativity. We analyze under what conditions the conformally flat quasiequilibrium (CFQE) approach can generate ``astrophysically relevant'' initial data, by developing an analysis that determines the violation of the CFQE approximation in the evolution of the binary described by the full Einstein theory. We show that the CFQE assumptions significantly violate the Einstein field equations for corotating neutron stars at orbital separations nearly double that of the innermost stable circular or…
We present a numerical model for uniformly rotating superfluid neutron stars, for the first time with realistic microphysics including entrainment, in a fully general relativistic framework. We compute stationary and axisymmetric configurations of neutron stars composed of two fluids, namely superfluid neutrons and charged particles (protons and electrons), rotating with different rates around a common axis. Both fluids are coupled by entrainment, a non-dissipative interaction which in case of a non-vanishing relative velocity between the fluids, causes the fluid momenta being not aligned with…
Gravitational-wave observations of inspiralling binary neutron star systems can be used to measure the neutron-star equation of state (EOS) through the tidally induced shift in the waveform phase that depends on the tidal deformability parameter $λ$. Previous work has shown that $λ$, a function of the neutron-star EOS and mass, is measurable by Advanced LIGO for a single event when including tidal information up to the merger frequency. In this work, we describe a method for stacking measurements of $λ$ from multiple inspiral events to measure the EOS. We use Markov chain Monte Carlo simulatio…
We investigate the impact of using high-order numerical methods to study the merger of magnetised neutron stars with finite-temperature microphysics and neutrino cooling in full general relativity. By implementing a fourth-order accurate conservative finite-difference scheme we model the inspiral together with the early post-merger and highlight the differences to traditional second-order approaches at the various stages of the simulation. We find that even for finite-temperature equations of state, convergence orders higher than second order can be achieved in the inspiral and post-merger for…
For the first time nonradial oscillations of superfluid nonrotating stars are self-consistently studied at finite stellar temperatures. We apply a realistic equation of state and realistic density dependent model of critical temperature of neutron and proton superfluidity. In particular, we discuss three-layer configurations of a star with no neutron superfluidity at the centre and in the outer region of the core but with superfluid intermediate region. We show, that oscillation spectra contain a set of modes whose frequencies can be very sensitive to temperature variations. Fast temporal evol…
We discuss the stability and construct dynamical configurations describing the gravitational collapse of unstable neutron stars with realistic equations of state compatible with the recent LIGO-Virgo constraints. Unlike other works that consider the collapse of a stellar configuration without a priori knowledge if it is stable or unstable, we first perform a complete analysis on stellar stability for such equations of state. Negative values of the squared frequency of the fundamental mode indicate us radial instability with respect to the collapse of the unstable star to a black hole. We find …
We investigate the nonrotating neutron stars in $f(T)$ gravity with $f(T)=T+α{T}^2$, where $T$ is the torsion scalar in the teleparallel formalism of gravity. In particular, we utilize the SLy and BSk family of equations of state for perfect fluid to describe the neutron stellar matter and search for the effects of the $f(T)$ modification on the models of neutron stars. For positive $α$, the modification results in a smaller stellar mass in comparison to general relativity, while the neutron stars will contain larger amount of matter for negative $α$. Moreover, there seems to be an upper limit…
Viscosity driven bar mode secular instabilities of rapidly rotating neutron stars are studied using LORENE/Nrotstar code. These instabilities set a more rigorous limit to the rotation frequency of neutron star than the Kepler frequency/mass shedding limit. The procedure employed in the code comprises of perturbing an axisymmetric and stationary configuration of a neutron star and studying its evolution by constructing a series of triaxial quasi-equilibrium configurations. Symmetry breaking point was found out for Polytropic as well as 10 realistic Equations of states (EOS) from the CompOSE dat…
A new six-parametric, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat exact solution of Einstein-Maxwell field equations having reflection symmetry is presented. It has arbitrary physical parameters of mass, angular momentum, mass--quadrupole moment, current octupole moment, electric charge and magnetic dipole, so it can represent the exterior field of a rotating, deformed, magnetized and charged object; some properties of the closed-form analytic solution such as its multipolar structure, electromagnetic fields and singularities are also presented. In the vacuum case, this analytic solution is matched t…
The gravitational properties of astrophysical objects depend sensitively on their internal structure. In Newtonian theory, the gravitational potential of a rotating star can be fully described by an infinite number of multipole moments of its mass distribution. Recently, this infinite number of moments for uniformly-rotating stars were shown semi-analytically to be expressible in terms of just the first three: the mass, the spin, and the quadrupole moment of the star. The relations between the various lower multipole moments were additionally shown to depend weakly on the equation of state, wh…
Merging neutron stars are expected to produce hot, metastable remnants in rapid differential rotation, which subsequently cool and evolve into rigidly rotating neutron stars or collapse to black holes. Studying this metastable phase and its further evolution is essential for the prediction and interpretation of the electromagnetic, neutrino, and gravitational signals from such a merger. In this work, we model binary neutron star merger remnants and propose new rotation and thermal laws that describe post-merger remnants. Our framework is capable to reproduce quasi-equilibrium configurations fo…
Coalescing compact star binaries are expected to be among the strongest sources of gravitational radiation to be seen by laser interferometers. We present calculations of the final phase of inspiral of equal mass irrotational neutron star binaries and strange quark star binaries. Six types of equations of state at zero temperature are used - three realistic nuclear equations of state of various softness and three different MIT bag models of strange quark matter. We study the precoalescing stage within the Isenberg-Wilson-Mathews approximation of general relativity using a multidomain spectral …
Here we investigate the axial w quasi-normal modes of neutron stars for several equations of state. In particular, we study the influence of the presence of hyperons in the core of the neutron stars. We have obtained that w-modes can be used to distinguish between neutron stars with hyperons and without hyperons for compact enough stars. We present phenomenological relations for the frequency and damping times with the compactness of the neutron star for wI and wII modes showing the differences of the stars with hyperons in the core. Also, we obtain a new phenomenological relation between the …
We describe realistic observing scenarios for early warning detection of binary neutron star mergers with the current generation of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors as these approach design sensitivity. Using Fisher analysis, we estimate that Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo will detect one signal before merger in their fourth observing run provided they maintain a 70\% duty cycle. 60\% of all observations and 8\% of those detectable 20 seconds before merger will be localized to $\lesssim 100 \thinspace \mathrm{deg}^2$. If KAGRA is able to achieve a 25 Mpc horizon, these prospects inc…
We study radial oscillations of non-rotating neutron stars (NSs) in four-dimensional General Relativity. The interior of the NS was modelled within a recently proposed multicomponent realistic equation of state (EoS) with the induced surface tension (IST). In particular, we considered the IST EoS with two sets of model parameters, that both reproduce all the known properties of normal nuclear matter, give a high quality description of the proton flow constraint, hadron multiplicities created in nuclear-nuclear collisions, consistent with astrophysical observations and the observational data fr…
We report on general relativistic calculations of quasiequilibrium configurations of binary neutron stars in circular orbits with zero vorticity. These configurations are expected to represent realistic situations as opposed to corotating configurations. The Einstein equations are solved under the assumption of a conformally flat spatial 3-metric (Wilson-Mathews approximation). The velocity field inside the stars is computed by solving an elliptical equation for the velocity scalar potential. Results are presented for sequences of constant baryon number (evolutionary sequences). Although the c…
In this work we investigate neutron stars (NS) in $f(\mathtt{R,L_m})$ theory of gravity for the case $f(\mathtt{R,L_m}) = \mathtt{R} + \mathtt{L_m} + σ\mathtt{R}\mathtt{L_m}$, where $\mathtt{R}$ is the Ricci scalar and $\mathtt{L_m}$ the Lagrangian matter density. In the term $σ\mathtt{R}\mathtt{L_m}$, $σ$ represents the coupling between the gravitational and particles fields. For the first time the hydrostatic equilibrium equations in the theory are solved considering realistic equations of state and NS masses and radii obtained are subject to joint constrains from massive pulsars, the gravit…

The early part of the gravitational wave signal of binary neutron star inspirals can potentially yield robust information on the nuclear equation of state. The influence of a star's internal structure on the waveform is characterized by a single parameter: the tidal deformability lambda, which measures the star's quadrupole deformation in response to the companion's perturbing tidal field. We calculate lambda for a wide range of equations of state and find that the value of lambda spans an order of magnitude for the range of equation of state models considered. An analysis of the feasibility o…
We investigated the detection rates and early warning parameters of binary neutron star (BNS) populations with decihertz gravitational-wave observatories in a realistic detecting strategy. Assuming 4 years' operation of B-DECIGO, we based on parameter precision to classify the detectable BNSs into three categories: (a) sources that merge within 1 year, which could be localized with an uncertainty of $ΔΩ\sim 10^{0}$ deg$^2$; (b) sources that merge in 1-4 years, which take up three quarters of the total events and yield the most precise angular resolution with $ΔΩ\sim 10^{-2}$ deg$^2$ and time-o…
Binary neutron star mergers provide a unique probe of the dense-matter equation of state (EoS) across a wide range of parameter space, from the zero-temperature EoS during the inspiral to the high-temperature EoS following the merger. In this paper, we implement a new model for calculating parametrized finite-temperature EoS effects into numerical relativity simulations. This "M* model" is based on a two-parameter approximation of the particle effective mass and includes the leading-order effects of degeneracy in the thermal pressure and energy. We test our numerical implementation by performi…

The merger of binary neutron stars is likely to lead to differentially rotating remnants. In this paper, we survey several cold nuclear equations of state (EOSs) and numerically construct models of differentially rotating neutron stars in general relativity. For each EOS we tabulate maximum allowed masses as a function of the degree of differential rotation. We also determine effective polytropic indices, and compare the maximum allowed masses with those for the corresponding polytropes. We consistently find larger mass increases for the polytropes, but even for the nuclear EOSs we typically f…
We discuss the role of dynamical tidal effects for inspiralling neutron star binaries, focussing on features that may be considered "unmodelled" in gravitational-wave searches. In order to cover the range of possibilities, we consider i) individual oscillation modes becoming resonant with the tide, ii) the elliptical instability, where a pair of inertial modes exhibit a nonlinear resonance with the tide, and iii) the non-resonant p-g instability which may arise as high order p- and g-modes in the star couple nonlinearly to the tide. In each case, we estimate the amount of additional energy los…
In this paper we present new estimates of the coalescence rate of neutron star binaries in the local universe and we discuss its consequences for the first generations of ground based interferometers. Our approach based on both evolutionary and statistical methods gives a galactic merging rate of 1.7 10$^{-5}$ yr$^{-1}$, in the range of previous estimates 10$^{-6}$ - 10$^{-4}$ yr$^{-1}$. The local rate which includes the contribution of elliptical galaxies is two times higher, in the order of 3.4 10$^{-5}$ yr$^{-1}$. We predict one detection every 148 and 125 years with initial VIRGO and LIGO,…
We present calculations of quasiequilibrium sequences of irrotational binary neutron stars based on realistic equations of state (EOS) for the whole neutron star interior. Three realistic nuclear EOSs of various softness and based on different microscopic models have been joined with a recent realistic EOS of the crust, giving in this way three different EOSs of neutron-star interior. Computations of quasiequilibrium sequences are performed within the Isenberg-Wilson-Mathews approximation to general relativity. For all evolutionary sequences, the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) is found…
We present numerical results of three-dimensional simulations for the merger of binary neutron stars (BNSs) in full general relativity. Hybrid equations of state (EOSs) are adopted to mimic realistic nuclear EOSs. In this approach, we divide the EOSs into two parts, i.e., the thermal part and the cold part. For the cold part, we assign a fitting formula for realistic EOSs of cold nuclear matter slightly modifying the formula developed by Haensel and Potekhin. We adopt the SLy and FPS EOSs for which the maximum allowed ADM mass of cold and spherical neutron stars (NSs) is ~ 2.04Mo and 1.80Mo, r…
Black hole-neutron star mergers resulting in the disruption of the neutron star and the formation of an accretion disk and/or the ejection of unbound material are prime candidates for the joint detection of gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signals when the next generation of gravitational-wave detectors comes online. However, the disruption of the neutron star and the properties of the post-merger remnant are very sensitive to the parameters of the binary. In this paper, we study the impact of the radius of the neutron star and the alignment of the black hole spin for systems within the …
Recent observations of neutron stars (NS) with radio, X-rays and gravitational waves have begun to constrain the equation of state (EoS) for nuclear matter beyond the nuclear saturation density. To one's surprise, there exist approximate universal relations connecting certain bulk properties of NSs that are insensitive to the underlying EoS and having important applications on probing fundamental physics including nuclear and gravitational physics. To date, analytic works on universal relations for realistic NSs are lacking, which may lead to a better understanding of the origin of the univers…
Spin precession equations including the spin-orbit (SO), spin-spin (SS), quadrupole-monopole (QM) and magnetic dipole-magnetic dipole (DD) leading-order interactions are derived for compact binary systems in order to investigate the DD contribution in the orbit-averaged spin precession equations for binary neutron star systems neglecting the gravitational radiation-reaction effect. It is known that the magnitudes of spins are not conserved quantities due to the DD interaction. We give a simple analytical description for the pure DD interaction making the magnitudes of spins almost constant by …
The so-called hyperon puzzle in the theory of neutron stars is considered in the framework of modified $f(R)$ gravity. We show that for simple hyperon equations of state, it is possible to obtain the maximal neutron star mass which satisfies the recent observational data for PSR J1614-2230, in higher-derivative models with power-law terms as $f(R) = R+αR^2+ βR^3$. The soft hyperon equation of state under consideration is usually treated as non-realistic in the standard General Relativity. The numerical analysis of Mass-Radius relation for massive neutron stars with hyperon equation of state in…
We conduct a direct comparison of three different representative numerical codes for constructing models of rapidly rotating neutron stars in general relativity. Our aim is to evaluate the accuracy of the codes and to investigate how the accuracy is affected by the choice of interpolation, domain of integration and equation of state. In all three codes, the same physical parameters, equations of state and interpolation method are used. We construct 25 selected models for polytropic equations of state and 22 models with realistic neutron star matter equations of state. The three codes agree wel…
