In this work we discuss the time-evolution of nonspherical perturbations of a nonrotating neutron star described by a realistic Equation of State (EOS). We analyze 10 different EOS for a large sample of neutron star models. Various kind of generic initial data are evolved and the corresponding gravitational wave signals are computed. We focus on the dynamical excitation of fluid and spacetime modes and extract the corresponding frequencies. We employ a constrained numerical algorithm based on standard finite differencing schemes which permits stable and long term evolutions. Our code provides accurate waveforms and allows to capture, via Fourier analysis of the energy spectra, the frequencies of the fluid modes with an accuracy comparable to that of frequency domain calculations. The results we present here are useful for provindig comparisons with simulations of nonlinear oscillations of (rotating) neutron star models as well as testbeds for 3D nonlinear codes.
We study small-amplitude, nonlinear pulsations of uniformly and differentially rotating neutron stars employing a two-dimensional evolution code for general-relativistic hydrodynamics. Using Fourier transforms at several points inside the star, both the eigenfrequencies and two-dimensional eigenfunctions of pulsations are extracted. The centrifugal forces and the degree of differential rotation have significant effects on the mode-eigenfunction. We find that near the mass-shedding limit, the pulsations are damped due to shocks forming at the surface of the star. This new damping mechanism may …
We revisit the problem of radial pulsations of neutron stars by computing four general-relativistic polytropic models, in which "density" and "adiabatic index" are involved with their discrete meanings: (i) "rest-mass density" or (ii) "mass-energy density" regarding the density, and (i) "constant" or (ii) "variable" regarding the adiabatic index. Considering the resulting four discrete combinations, we construct corresponding models and compute for each model the frequencies of the lowest three radial modes. Comparisons with previous results are made. The deviations of respective frequencies o…
Tidal deformation of neutron star with multiquark core is calculated using nuclear and multiquark equations of state. The equation of state of the multiquark phase from the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto~(SS) model is relatively stiff in the low density region and becomes softer at high densities. The values of Love number and dimensionless deformation parameter, $k_{2}$ and $Λ$, are found to be within the physically viable range under the present constraints. Radial pulsation frequencies of the multiquark core for $n=0-5$ modes are calculated for the entire mass range. For $M_{\rm core}\simeq 2 M…
We discuss the nature of the various modes of pulsation of superfluid neutron stars using comparatively simple Newtonian models. The matter in these stars is described in terms of a two-fluid model, where one fluid is the neutron superfluid, which is believed to exist in the core and inner crust of mature neutron stars, and the other fluid represents a conglomerate of all other constituents (crust nuclei, protons, electrons, etc.). In our model, we incorporate the non-dissipative interaction due to the so-called entrainment effect, whereby the momentum of one constituent (e.g. the neutrons) ca…
We study the effects of finite stellar temperatures on the oscillations of superfluid neutron stars. The importance of these effects is illustrated with a simple example of a radially pulsating general relativistic star. Two main effects are taken into account: (i) temperature dependence of the entrainment matrix and (ii) the variation of the size of superfluid region with temperature. Four models are considered, which include either one or both of these two effects. Pulsation spectra are calculated for these models, and asymptotes for eigenfrequencies at temperatures close to critical tempera…
The precise origin of short gamma ray bursts (SGRBs) remains an important open question in relativistic astrophysics. Increasingly, observational evidence suggests the merger of a binary compact object system as the source for most SGRBs, but it is currently unclear how to distinguish observationally between a binary neutron star progenitor and a black hole-neutron star progenitor. We suggest the quasi-periodic signal of jet precession as an observational signature of SGRBs originating in mixed binary systems, and quantify both the fraction of mixed binaries capable of producing SGRBs, and the…
Non pulsating neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries largely outnumber those that show pulsations. The lack of detectable pulses represents a big open problem for two important reasons. The first is that the structure of the accretion flow in the region closest to the neutron star is not well understood and it is therefore unclear what is the mechanism that prevents the pulse formation. The second is that the detection of pulsations would immediately reveal the spin of the neutron star. Aql X-1 is a special source among low mass X-ray binaries because it has showed the unique property of pul…
This paper is devoted to the computation of compact binaries composed of one black hole and one neutron star. The objects are assumed to be on exact circular orbits. Standard 3+1 decomposition of Einstein equations is performed and the conformal flatness approximation is used. The obtained system of elliptic equations is solved by means of multi-domain spectral methods. Results are compared with previous work both in the high mass ratio limit and for one neutron star with very low compactness parameter. The accuracy of the present code is shown to be greater than with previous codes. Moreover,…
We summarize the observations of the spin periods of rapidly accreting neutron stars. If gravitational radiation is responsible for balancing the accretion torque at the observed spin frequencies of ~300 Hz, then the brightest of these systems make excellent gravitational wave sources for LIGO-II and beyond. We review the recent theoretical progress on two mechanisms for gravitational wave emission: mass quadrupole radiation from deformed neutron star crusts and current quadrupole radiation from r-mode pulsations in neutron star cores.
We develop a close-limit approximation to the head-on collision of two neutron stars similar to that used to treat the merger of black hole binaries . This approximation can serve as a useful benchmark test for future fully nonlinear studies. For neutron star binaries, the close-limit approximation involves assuming that the merged object can be approximated as a perturbed, stable neutron star during the ring-down phase of the coalescence. We introduce a prescription for the construction of initial data sets, discuss the physical plausibility of the various assumptions involved, and briefly in…
An approach to general relativity based on conformal flatness and quasiequilibrium (CFQE) assumptions has played an important role in the study of the inspiral dynamics and in providing initial data for fully general relativistic numerical simulations of coalescing compact binaries. However, the regime of validity of the approach has never been established. To this end, we develop an analysis that determines the violation of the CFQE approximation in the evolution of the binary described by the full Einstein theory. With this analysis, we show that the CFQE assumption is significantly violated…

Using numerical simulations based on solving the general relativistic hydrodynamic equations, we study the dynamics of a phase transition in the dense core of isolated rotating neutron stars, triggered by the back bending instability reached via angular momentum loss. In particular, we investigate the dynamics of a migration from an unstable configuration into a stable one, which leads to a mini-collapse of the neutron star and excites sizeable pulsations in its bulk until it acquires a new stable equilibrium state. We consider equations of state with softening at high densities, a simple anal…
We use the basic equations that predict the emission of gravitational waves according to the Einstein gravitation theory to calculate the luminosities and the amplitudes of the waves generated by binary stars, pulsations of neutron stars, wobbling of deformed neutron stars, oscillating quadrupoles, rotating bars and collapsing and bouncing cores of supernovas. This paper was written to graduate and postgraduate students of Physics.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of w-mode pulsations of compact stars in the high-frequency regime. We observe that both the axial and polar w-mode QNMs attain similar asymptotic behaviors in spite of the fact that they are described by two totally different differential equation systems. We obtain robust asymptotic formulae relating w-mode QNMs of different polarities and different angular momenta. To explore the physical reason underlying such similarity, we first derive a high-frequency approximation for the polar w-mode oscillations to unify the descriptio…
We compute the axial quasi-normal modes of static neutron stars in scalar tensor theory. In particular, we employ various realistic equations of state including nuclear, hyperonic and hybrid matter. We investigate the fundamental curvature mode and compare the results with those of General Relativity. We find that the frequency of the modes and the damping time are reduced for the scalarized neutron stars. In addition, we confirm and extend the universal relations for quasi-normal modes known in General Relativity to this wide range of realistic equations of state for scalarized neutron stars …
We consider the perturbations of a relativistic star as an initial-value problem. Having discussed the formulation of the problem (the perturbation equations and the appropriate boundary conditions at the centre and the surface of the star) in detail we evolve the equations numerically from several different sets of initial data. In all the considered cases we find that the resulting gravitational waves carry the signature of several of the star's pulsation modes. Typically, the fluid $f$-mode, the first two $p$-modes and the slowest damped gravitational $w$-mode are present in the signal. Thi…
We study the universality in gravitational waves emitted from non-rotating neutron stars characterized by different equations of state (EOS). We find that the quasi-normal mode frequencies of such waves, including the $w$-modes and the $f$-mode, display similar universal scaling behaviours that hold for most EOS. Such behaviours are shown to stem from the mathematical structure of the axial and the polar gravitational wave equations, and the fact that the mass distribution function can be approximated by a cubic-quintic polynomial in radius. As a benchmark for other realistic neutron stars, a …
We select 37 most common and realistic dense matter equation of states to integrate the general relativistic stellar structure equations for static spherically symmetric matter configurations. For all these models, we check the compliance of the acceptability conditions that every stellar model should satisfy. It was found that some of the non-relativistic equation of states violate the causality and/or the dominant energy condition and that adiabatic instabilities appear in the inner crust for all equation of state considered.
In this paper the internal structure of a neutron star is shown to be inferrable from its gravitational-wave spectrum. Iteratively applying the inverse scheme of the scaled coordinate logarithmic perturbation method for neutron stars proposed by Tsui and Leung [Astrophys. J. {\bf 631}, 495 (2005)], we are able to determine the mass, the radius and the mass distribution of a star from its quasi-normal mode frequencies of stellar pulsation. In addition, accurate equation of state of nuclear matter can be obtained from such inversion scheme. Explicit formulas for the case of axial $w$-mode oscill…
We consider the effect of scalarization on static and slowly rotating neutron stars for a wide variety of realistic equations of state, including pure nuclear matter, nuclear matter with hyperons, hybrid nuclear and quark matter, and pure quark matter. We analyze the onset of scalarization, presenting a universal relation for the critical coupling parameter versus compactness. We find that the onset and the magnitude of the scalarization are strongly correlated with the value of the gravitational potential (the metric component $g_{tt}$) at the center of the star. We also consider the moment-o…
In this paper we compute general-relativistic polytropic models simulating rigidly rotating, pulsating neutron stars. These relativistic compact objects, with a radius of $\sim 10 \, \mathrm{km}$ and mass between $\sim 1.4$ and $3.2$ solar masses, are closely related to pulsars. We emphasize on computing the change in the pulsation eigenfrequencies owing to a rigid rotation, which, in turn, is a decisive issue for studying stability of such objects. In our computations, we keep rotational perturbation terms of up to second order in the angular velocity.
We discuss the dependence of the pulsation frequencies of the axial quasi-normal modes of a nonrotating neutron star upon the equation of state describing the star interior. The continued fraction method has been used to compute the complex frequencies for a set of equations of state based on different physical assumptions and spanning a wide range of stiffness. The numerical results show that the detection of axial gravitational waves would allow to discriminate between the models underlying the different equation of states, thus providing relevant information on both the structure of neutron…
For the first time nonradial oscillations of superfluid nonrotating stars are self-consistently studied at finite stellar temperatures. We apply a realistic equation of state and realistic density dependent model of critical temperature of neutron and proton superfluidity. In particular, we discuss three-layer configurations of a star with no neutron superfluidity at the centre and in the outer region of the core but with superfluid intermediate region. We show, that oscillation spectra contain a set of modes whose frequencies can be very sensitive to temperature variations. Fast temporal evol…
We study the solution space of general relativistic, axisymmetric, equilibria of differentially rotating neutron stars with realistic, nuclear equations of state. We find that different types of stars, which were identified by earlier works for polytropic equations of state, arise for realistic equations of state, too. Scanning the solution space for the sample of realistic equations of state we treat, we find lower limits on the maximum rest masses supported by cold, differentially rotating stars for each type of stars. We often discover equilibrium configurations that can support more than 2…
We incorporate realistic, tabulated equations of state into fully relativistic simulations of magnetized neutron stars along with a neutrino leakage scheme which accounts for cooling via neutrino emission. Both these improvements utilize open-source code (GR1D) and tables from http://stellarcollapse.org. Our implementation makes use of a novel method for the calculation of the optical depth which simplifies its use with distributed adaptive mesh refinement. We present various tests with and without magnetization and preliminary results both from single stars and from the merger of a binary sys…
Thermal dominated X-ray spectra of neutron stars in quiescent transient X-ray binaries and neutron stars that undergo thermonuclear bursts are sensitive to mass and radius. The mass-radius relation of neutron stars depends on the equation of state that governs their interior. Constraining this relation accurately is thus of fundamental importance to understand the nature of dense matter. In this context we introduce a pipeline to calculate realistic model spectra of rotating neutron stars with hydrogen and helium atmospheres. An arbitrarily fast rotating neutron star with a given equation of s…
Simulations of binary neutron stars have seen great advances in terms of physical detail and numerical quality. However, the spin of the neutron stars, one of the simplest global parameters of binaries, remains mostly unstudied. We present the first, fully nonlinear general relativistic dynamical evolutions of the last three orbits for constraint satisfying initial data of spinning neutron star binaries, with astrophysically realistic spins aligned and anti-aligned to the orbital angular momentum. The initial data is computed with the constant rotational velocity approach. The dynamics of the …
