We demonstrate that the uniqueness of the mild solution of the two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation with the critical dissipation holds in the scaling critical homogeneous Besov space $\dot{B}^0_{\infty,1}$. We consider a solustion of integral equation, and our result does not need regularity assumption.
In this paper, we focus on the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional horizontal dissipation and vertical thermal diffusion which represents a general case of the classical surface quasi-geostrophic equation. On the one hand, we will show the local existence and uniqueness of the solution in Sobolev space $H^{2-2α}(\mathbb{R}^2)\cap H^{2-2β}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, which is the critical space in the classical case. Furthermore, we will demonstrate that the solution is global even when the initial data is very small. Finally, we will study the asymptotic representation of ou…
We continue our study of the dynamics of a nearly inviscid periodic surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Here we consider a slightly diffusive stochastic SQG equation of the form \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} dθ_t + |D|^{2δ}θ_t\,dx + (u_t \cdot \nabla)θ_t\,dx + |D|^δdW_t = 0 \\ u_t = \nabla^\perp|D|^{-1}θ_t. \end{cases} \end{equation*} We construct global energy solutions as introduced by P. Goncalves and M. Jara (2014) for any $δ> 0$, so that any small amount of diffusion permits us to construct solutions. We show moreover that pathwise uniqueness of these energy solutions holds in the prese…
This work gathers new results concerning the semi-geostrophic equations: existence and stability of measure valued solutions, existence and uniqueness of solutions under certain continuity conditions for the density, convergence to the incompressible Euler equations. Meanwhile, a general technique to prove uniqueness of sufficiently smooth solutions to non-linearly coupled system is introduced, using optimal transportation.
We show that weak solutions to the 3D quasi-geostrophic system in the class $C^ζ_{t,x}$ for $ζ<\frac{1}{5}$ are not unique and may achieve any smooth, non-negative energy profile. Our proof follows a convex integration scheme which utilizes the stratified nature of the quasi-geostrophic velocity field, providing a link with the 2D Euler equations. In fact we observe that under particular circumstances our construction coincides with the convex integration scheme for the 2D Euler equations introduced by Choffrut, De Lellis, and Szekélyhidi \cite{cdlsj12} and recovers a result which can already …
Via probabilistic convex integration, we prove non-uniqueness in law of the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equations forced by random noise of additive type. In its proof we work on the equation of the momentum rather than the temperature, which is new in the study of the stochastic surface quasi-geostrophic equations. We also generalize the classical Calder$\acute{\mathrm{o}}$n commutator estimate to the case of fractional Laplacians.
Consider the surface quasi-geostrophic equation with random diffusion, white in time. We show global existence and uniqueness in high probability for the associated Cauchy problem satisfying a Gevrey type bound. This article is inspired by recent work of Glatt-Holtz and Vicol.
We study the three dimensional active scalar equation called the magneto-geostropic equation which was proposed by Moffatt and Loper as a model for the geodynamo processes in the Earth's fluid core. When the viscosity of the fluid is positive, the constitutive law that relates the drift velocity $u(x,t)$ and the scalar temperature $θ(x,t)$ produces two orders of smoothing. We study the implications of this property. For example, we prove that in the case of the non-diffusive ($\varepsilon_κ=0$) active scalar equation, initial data $θ_0\in L^3$ implies the existence of unique, global weak solut…
We develop a theory of self-similar solutions to the critical surface quasi-geostrophic equations. We construct self-similar solutions for arbitrarily large data in various regularity classes and demonstrate, in the small data regime, uniqueness and global asymptotic stability. These solutions are non-decaying as $|x| \to +\infty$, which leads to ambiguity in the velocity $\vec{R}^\perp θ$. This ambiguity is corrected by imposing $m$-fold rotational symmetry. The self-similar solutions exhibited here lie just beyond the known well-posedness theory and are expected to shed light on potential no…
The inviscid barotropic quasi-geostrophic equation with a free surface is considered. The free surface mandates a non-standard boundary condition. The global existence existence and uniqueness of a weak solution is established, thanks to the uniform in time bounds on the potential vorticity. The solution is also shown to satisfy the initial and boundary conditions in the classical sense.
We study the Cauchy problem for the quasi-geostrophic equations with the critical dissipation in the two dimensional half space under the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We show the global existence, the uniqueness and the analyticity of solutions, and the real analyticity up to the boundary is obtained. We will show one of natural ways to estimate the nonlinear term for functions satisfying the Dirichlet boundary condition.
We study the critical and super-critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations in $\bR^2$ or $\bT^2$. Higher regularity of mild solutions with arbitrary initial data in $H^{2-γ}$ is proved. As a corollary, we obtain a global existence result for the critical 2D quasi-geostrophic equations with periodic $\dot H^1$ data. Some decay in time estimates are also provided.
We prove the existence of the V-states for the generalized inviscid SQG equations with $α\in ]0,1[.$ These structures are special rotating simply connected patches with $m-$ fold symmetry bifurcating from the trivial solution at some explicit values of the angular velocity. This produces, inter alia, an infinite family of non stationary global solutions with uniqueness.
We establish analyticity of the subcritical and critical quasi-geostrophic equations in critical Besov spaces. The main method is so-called Gevrey estimates, which is motivated by the work of Foias and Temam. We show that mild solutions θ(t), are Gevrey regular, i.e. they satisfy the estimate \sup_{t>0}\|e^{αt^{1/γ}Λ_1}θ(t)\|_{\cap L}<\infty. for a suitably chosen α>0 and a scaling invariant Besov space {\cap L}.
In this paper we study a three dimensional thermocline planetary geostrophic ``horizontal" hyper--diffusion model of the gyre-scale midlatitude ocean. We show the global existence and uniqueness of the weak and strong solutions to this model. Moreover, we establish the existence of a finite dimensional global attractor to this dissipative evolution system. Preliminary computational tests indicate that our hyper--diffusion model does not exhibit any of the nonphysical instabilities near the literal boundary which are observed numerically in other models.
We prove the well posedness: global existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solutions, of a class of d-dimensional fractional stochastic active scalar equations. This class includes the stochastic, dD-quasi-geostrophic equation, $ d\geq 1$, fractional Burgers equation on the circle, fractional nonlocal transport equation and the 2D-fractional vorticity Navier-Stokes equation. We consider the multiplicative noise with locally Lipschitz diffusion term in both, the free and no free divergence modes. The random noise is given by an $Q-$Wiener process with the covariance $Q$ being either of fin…
This paper establishes several existence and uniqueness results for two families of active scalar equations with velocity fields determined by the scalars through very singular integrals. The first family is a generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation with the velocity field $u$ related to the scalar $θ$ by $u=\nabla^\perpΛ^{β-2}θ$, where $1<β\le 2$ and $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$ is the Zygmund operator. The borderline case $β=1$ corresponds to the SQG equation and the situation is more singular for $β>1$. We obtain the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, the global existence…
The semi-geostrophic equations have attracted the attention of the physical and mathematical communities since the work of Hoskins in the 1970s owing to their ability to model the formation of fronts in rotation-dominated flows, and also to their connection with optimal transport theory. In this paper, we study an active scalar equation, whose activity is determined by way of a Neumann-to-Dirichlet map associated to a fully nonlinear second-order Neumann boundary value problem on the infinite strip $\mathbb{R}^{2}\times(0,1)$, that models a semi-geostrophic flow in regime of constant potential…
The 2D quasi-geostrophic (QG) equation is a two dimensional model of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. When dissipation is included in the model then solutions always exist if the dissipation's wave number dependence is super-linear. Below this critical power the dissipation appears to be insufficient. For instance, it is not known if the critical dissipative QG equation has global smooth solutions for arbitrary large initial data. In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of global classical solutions of the critical dissipative QG equation for initial data that have small $L^\inft…
Motivated by an equation arising in magnetohydrodynamics, we address the well-posedness theroy for the non-diffusive magneto-geostrophic equation. Namely, an active scalar equation in which the divergence-free drift velocity is one derivative more singular that the active scalar. In \cite{Friedlander-Vicol_3}, the authors prove that the non-diffusive equation is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard in Sobolev spaces, but locally well posed in spaces of analytic functions. Here, we give an example of a steady state that is nonlinearly stable for periodic perturbations with initial data localized …
This paper is about the evolution of a temperature front governed by the Surface quasi-geostrophic equation. The existence part of that program within the scale of Sobolev spaces was obtained by one of the authors [10]. Here we revisit that proof introducing some new tools and points of view which allow us to conclude the also needed uniqueness result.
We present remarkably simple proofs of Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequalities for stochastic integrals and maximal inequalities for stochastic convolutions in Banach spaces driven by Lévy-type processes. Exponential estimates for stochastic convolutions are obtained and two versions of Itô's formula in Banach spaces are also derived. Based on the obtained maximal inequality, the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions of stochastic quasi-geostrophic equation with Lévy noise is established.
In this paper, we present the result of maximum regularity of the mild solution of the fractional Cauchy problem. As our main result, we investigate the uniqueness of mild solutions for time-fractional Navier-Stokes equations in class $C\left([0,\infty);L^{N}\left( \mathbb{R}^{N}\right)^{N}\right)$ by means of the estimates $L^{p}-L^{q}$ of Giga-Shor inequality and the Gronwall inequality.
It is well known, by now, that the three-dimensional non-viscous planetary geostrophic model, with vertical hydrostatic balance and horizontal Rayleigh friction, coupled to the heat diffusion and transport, is mathematically ill-posed. This is because the no-normal flow physical boundary condition implicitly produces an additional boundary condition for the temperature at the literal boundary. This additional boundary condition is different, because of the Coriolis forcing term, than the no heat flux physical boundary condition. Consequently, the second order parabolic heat equation is over de…
We address the well-posedness theory for the magento-geostrophic equation, namely an active scalar equation in which the divergence-free drift velocity is one derivative more singular than the active scalar. In the presence of supercritical fractional diffusion given by (-Δ)^γ, where 0<γ<1, we discover that for γ>1/2 the equations are locally well-posed, while for γ<1/2 they are ill-posed, in the sense that there is no Lipschitz solution map. The main reason for the striking loss of regularity when γgoes below 1/2 is that the constitutive law used to obtain the velocity from the active scalar …
In this paper we study a higher order viscous quasi-geostrophic type equation. This equation was derived in [11] as the limit dynamics of a singularly perturbed Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system with Coriolis force, when the Mach, Rossby and Weber numbers go to zero at the same rate. The scope of the present paper is twofold. First of all, we investigate well-posedness of such a model on the whole space $\R^2$: we prove that it is well-posed in $H^s$ for any $s\geq3$, globally in time. Interestingly enough, we show that this equation owns two levels of energy estimates, for which one gets existenc…
We address the uniqueness problem for mild solutions of the Boussinesq system in R 3. We provide several uniqueness classes on the velocity and the temperature, generalizing in this way the classical C([0, T ]; L 3 (R 3))-uniqueness result for mild solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.
We consider the dynamics of particle systems where the particles are confined by impenetrable barriers to a bounded, possibly non-convex domain $Ω$. When particles hit the boundary, we consider an instant change in velocity, which turns the systems describing the particle dynamics into an ODE with discontinuous right-hand side. Other than the typical approach to analyse such a system by using weak solutions to ODEs with multi-valued right-hand sides (i.e., applying the theory introduced by Filippov in 1988), we establish the existence of mild solutions instead. This solution concept is easier …
For the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} & \partial_t θ+u\cdot \nabla θ=0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T), \\ & u=\nabla^\perp ψ, \quad ψ= (-Δ)^{-s}θ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T) , \end{aligned} \right. $$ $0<s<1$, we consider for $k\ge1$ the problem of finding a family of $k$-vortex solutions $θ_\varepsilon(x,t)$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ $$ θ_\varepsilon(x,t) \rightharpoonup \sum_{j=1}^k m_jδ(x-ξ_j(t)) $$ for suitable trajectories for the vortices $x=ξ_j(t)$. We find such solutions in the special cases of vortices travell…
In the semigroup approach to stochastic evolution equations, the fundamental issue of uniqueness of mild solutions is often "reduced" to the much easier problem of proving uniqueness for strong solutions. This reduction is usually carried out in a formal way, without really justifying why and how one can do that. We provide sufficient conditions for uniqueness of mild solutions to a broad class of semilinear stochastic evolution equations with coefficients satisfying a monotonicity assumption.
We study the Cauchy problem for the quasi-geostrophic equations in a unit ball of the two dimensional space with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We show the existence, the uniqueness of the strong solution in the framework of Besov spaces. We establish a spectral localization technique and commutator estimates.
We consider two models for a two component gas mixture with translational and internal energy degrees of freedom described by a BGK approximation assuming that the number of particles of each species remains constant. The two species are allowed to have different degrees of freedom in internal energy and are modelled by a system of kinetic BGK equations featuring two interaction terms to account for momentum and energy transfer between the species. We consider two models in the literature and prove that the models satisfy a different equation of state than the ideal gas law. Moreover, we prove…
In this paper, we present a new and elementary proof of the local existence and uniqueness of the classical solution to the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation via the method of the contraction mapping principle. Also, same result holds true for a kind of transport equation with nonlocal velocity via the method of the contraction mapping principle.
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for one multidimensional compressible nonlocal model of the dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations. First, we obtain the local existence and uniqueness of the smooth non-negative solution or the strong solution in time. Secondly, for the sub-critical and critical case $1\leα\leq 2$, we obtain the global existence and uniqueness results of the nonnegative smooth solution. Then, we prove the global existence of the weak solution for $0\le α\le 2$ and $ν\ge 0$. Finally, for the sub-critical case, we establish the global $H^1$ and $L^p, p>2,$ decay rate o…
In this paper, we consider the uniqueness of solutions to the 3d Navier-Stokes equations with initial vorticity given by $ω_0 = αe_z δ_{x = y = 0}$, where $δ_{x=y= 0}$ is the one dimensional Hausdorff measure of an infinite, vertical line and $α\in \mathbb R$ is an arbitrary circulation. This initial data corresponds to an idealized, infinite vortex filament. One smooth, mild solution is given by the self-similar Oseen vortex column, which coincides with the heat evolution. Previous work by Germain, Harrop-Griffiths, and the first author implies that this solution is unique within a class of m…
We consider the evolution of weak vanishing viscosity solutions to the critically dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Due to the possible non-uniqueness of solutions, we rephrase the problem as a set-valued dynamical system and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal Sobolev regularity. To achieve this, we derive a new Sobolev estimate involving Hölder norms, which complement the existing estimates based on commutator analysis.
