We study the critical and super-critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations in $\bR^2$ or $\bT^2$. Higher regularity of mild solutions with arbitrary initial data in $H^{2-γ}$ is proved. As a corollary, we obtain a global existence result for the critical 2D quasi-geostrophic equations with periodic $\dot H^1$ data. Some decay in time estimates are also provided.
In this paper, we show that the global solution of the surface anisotropic two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional horizontal dissipation and vertical thermal diffusion established by the author in [2] is bounded in Sobolev spaces uniformly with respect to time.
We study the behavior at infinity in time of the global solution of the anisotropic quasi-geostrophic equation $θ\in C_b(\mathbb{R}^+,H^s( \mathbb{R}^2))$. We prove that this solution decays to zero as time goes to infinity in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $p\in [2,+\infty],$ moreover, we prove also that $\lim\limits_{t\rightarrow +\infty}\|θ(t)\|_{H^s}=0$.
In \cite{YZ}, the author proved the global existence of the two-dimensional anisotropic quasi-geostrophic equations with condition on the parameters $α,$ $β$ in the Sobolev spaces $H^s( \R^2)$; $s\geq 2$. In this paper, we show that this equations has a global solution in the spaces $H^s(\R^2)$, where $\max\{2-2α,2-2β\}< s<2$, with additional condition over $α$ and $β$. The proof is based on the Gevrey-class regularity of the solution in neighborhood of zero.
In this paper, we focus on the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equation with fractional horizontal dissipation and vertical thermal diffusion which represents a general case of the classical surface quasi-geostrophic equation. On the one hand, we will show the local existence and uniqueness of the solution in Sobolev space $H^{2-2α}(\mathbb{R}^2)\cap H^{2-2β}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, which is the critical space in the classical case. Furthermore, we will demonstrate that the solution is global even when the initial data is very small. Finally, we will study the asymptotic representation of ou…
In this paper, we consider the following modified quasi-geostrophic equations $\partial_tθ+Λ^αθ+u\vec\nablaθ=0$, $u=Λ^{α-1}\mathcal{R}^\perp(θ)$ where $α\in ]0,1[$ is a fixed parameter. This equation was recently introduced by P. Constantin, G. Iyer and J. Wu in \cite{CIW} as a modification of the classical quasi-geostrophic equation. In this paper, we prove that for any initial data $θ_\ast$ in the Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^2),$ the equation (MQG) has a global and smooth solution $θ$ in $C(\mathbb{R}^{+},H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)) .$
In this paper, following the techniques of Foias and Temam, we establish suitable Gevrey class regularity of solutions to the supercritical quasi-geostrophic equations in the whole space, with initial data in "critical" Sobolev spaces. Moreover, the Gevrey class that we obtain is "near optimal" and as a corollary, we obtain temporal decay rates of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. Unlike the Navier-Stokes or the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, the low dissipation poses a difficulty in establishing Gevrey regularity. A new commutator estimate in Gevrey classes, involving the…
We establish short-time existence of solutions to the surface quasi-geostrophic equation in both the Hölder spaces $C^r(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $r>1$ and the uniformly local Sobolev spaces $H^s_{ul}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $s\geq 3$. Using methods similar to those for the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, we also obtain short-time existence for the three-dimensional Euler equations in uniformly local Sobolev spaces.
We consider the initial value problem for the 2D quasi-geostrophic equation with weak dissipation term $κ(-Δ)^{α/2}θ (0<α\leqslant 1)$ and dispersive forcing term $Au_2$. We establish a unique global solution for a given initial data $θ_0$ which belongs to the scaling subcritical Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)\ (s>2-α)$ if the size of dispersion parameter is sufficiently large. This phenomenon is so-called the global regularity. We also obtain the relationship between the initial data and the dispersion parameter, which ensures the existence of the global solution. Moreover, we show the glob…

In this paper, we study the super-critical Quasi-Geostrophic equation in Gevrey-Sobolev space. We prove the local existence of $(QG)$ for any large initial data and we give an exponential type of Blow-up to the solution. Moreover, we establish the existence global for a small initial data and we show that $\|θ\|_{H^s_{a, α^{-1}}}$ decays to zero as time goes to infinity. Fourier analysis and standard techniques are used.
Motivated by an equation arising in magnetohydrodynamics, we address the well-posedness theroy for the non-diffusive magneto-geostrophic equation. Namely, an active scalar equation in which the divergence-free drift velocity is one derivative more singular that the active scalar. In \cite{Friedlander-Vicol_3}, the authors prove that the non-diffusive equation is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard in Sobolev spaces, but locally well posed in spaces of analytic functions. Here, we give an example of a steady state that is nonlinearly stable for periodic perturbations with initial data localized …
We consider the $2$D dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation with the time periodic external force and prove the existence of a unique time periodic solution in the case of the supercritical dissipation. In this case, the smoothing effect of the semigroup generated by the dissipation term is too weak to control the nonlinearity in the Duhamel term of the correponding integral equation. In this paper, we give a new approach which does not depend on the contraction mapping principle for the integral equation.
We consider the Benjamin-Ono equation on the real line for initial data in weighted Sobolev spaces. After the application of the gauge transform, the flow is shown to be Lipschitz continuous and to present a nonlinear smoothing effect. As a consequence, unconditional uniqueness for the Benjamin-Ono equation is proved.
We consider the question of growth of high order Sobolev norms of solutions of the conservative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. We show that if $s>0$ is large then for every given $A$ there is exist small in $H^s$ initial data such that the corresponding solution's $H^s$ norm exceeds $A$ at some time. The idea of the construction is quasilinear. We use a small perturbation of a stable shear flow. The shear flow can be shown to create small scales in the perturbation part of the flow. The control is lost once the nonlinear effects become too large.
We consider an active scalar equation that is motivated by a model for magneto-geostrophic dynamics and the geodynamo. We prove that the non-diffusive equation is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard in Sobolev spaces. In contrast, the critically diffusive equation is well-posed. In this case we give an example of a steady state that is nonlinearly unstable, and hence produces a dynamo effect in the sense of an exponentially growing magnetic field.
This work involves theoretical and numerical analysis of the Thermal Quasi-Geostrophic (TQG) model of submesoscale geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD). Physically, the TQG model involves thermal geostrophic balance, in which the Rossby number, the Froude number and the stratification parameter are all of the same asymptotic order. The main analytical contribution of this paper is to construct local-in-time unique strong solutions for the TQG model. For this, we show that solutions of its regularized version $α$-TQG converge to solutions of TQG as its smoothing parameter $α\rightarrow 0$ and we ob…
The Cauchy problem for nonlinear elastic wave equations with viscoelastic damping terms is investigated in $L^{p}$ framework. It is proved that the small global solutions constructed in $L^{2}$-Sobolev spaces in our preceding paper [12] satisfies consistency property corresponding to the additional regularity of the initial data. As a result, sharp estimates in $t$ and approximation formulas by the diffusion waves are established.
In this article, we prove that data assimilation by feedback nudging can be achieved for the three-dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation in a simplified scenario using only large spatial scale observables on the dynamical boundary. On this boundary, a scalar unknown (buoyancy or surface temperature of the fluid) satisfies the surface quasi-geostrophic equation. The feedback nudging is done on this two-dimensional model, yet ultimately synchronizes the streamfunction of the three-dimensional flow. The main analytical difficulties are due to the presence of a nonlocal dissipative operator in th…
We consider the family known as modified or generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations (mSQG) consisting of the classical inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation together with a family of regularized active scalars given by introducing a smoothing operator of nonzero but possibly arbitrarily small degree. This family naturally interpolates between the 2D Euler equation and the SQG equation. For this family of equations we construct an invariant measure on a rough $L^2$-based Sobolev space and establish the existence of solutions of arbitrarily large lifespan for initial data in …
We construct solutions in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with finite energy of the surface quasi-geostrophic equations (SQG) that initially are in $C^k$ ($k\geq 2$) but that are not in $C^{k}$ for $t>0$. We prove a similar result also for $H^{s}$ in the range $s\in(\frac32,2)$. Moreover, we prove strong ill-posedness in the critical space $H^{2}$.
It is well known that the Prandtl boundary layer equation is instable, and the well-posedness in Sobolev space for the Cauchy problem is an open problem. Recently, under the Oleinik's monotonicity assumption for the initial datum, [1] have proved the local well-posedness of Cauchy problem in Sobolev space (see also [21]). In this work, we study the Gevrey smoothing effects of the local solution obtained in [1]. We prove that the Sobolev's class solution belongs to some Gevrey class with respect to tangential variables at any positive time.
We study the critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations in $\bR^2$ with arbitrary $H^1$ initial data. After showing certain decay estimate, a global well-posedness result is proved by adapting the method in [11] with a suitable modification. A decay in time estimate for higher order homogeneous Sobolev norms of solutions is also discussed.
We study the three dimensional active scalar equation called the magneto-geostropic equation which was proposed by Moffatt and Loper as a model for the geodynamo processes in the Earth's fluid core. When the viscosity of the fluid is positive, the constitutive law that relates the drift velocity $u(x,t)$ and the scalar temperature $θ(x,t)$ produces two orders of smoothing. We study the implications of this property. For example, we prove that in the case of the non-diffusive ($\varepsilon_κ=0$) active scalar equation, initial data $θ_0\in L^3$ implies the existence of unique, global weak solut…
This paper studies the dissipative generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations in a supercritical regime where the order of the dissipation is small relative to order of the velocity, and the velocities are less regular than the advected scalar by up to one order of derivative. We also consider a non-degenerate modification of the endpoint case in which the velocity is less smooth than the advected scalar by slightly more than one order. The existence and uniqueness theory of these equations in the borderline Sobolev spaces is addressed, as well as the instantaneous smoothing effect of the…
Lions, Perthame, Tadmor conjectured in 1994 an optimal smoothing effect for entropy solutions of nonlinear scalar conservations laws . In this short paper we will restrict our attention to the simpler one-dimensional case. First, supercritical geometric optics lead to sequences of $C^\infty$ solutions uniformly bounded in the Sobolev space conjectured. Second we give continuous solutions which belong exactly to the suitable Sobolev space. In order to do so we give two new definitions of nonlinear flux and we introduce fractional $BV$ spaces.
We consider the evolution of weak vanishing viscosity solutions to the critically dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Due to the possible non-uniqueness of solutions, we rephrase the problem as a set-valued dynamical system and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal Sobolev regularity. To achieve this, we derive a new Sobolev estimate involving Hölder norms, which complement the existing estimates based on commutator analysis.

In this paper we study the regularity properties of solutions to the Davey-Stewartson system. It is shown that for initial data in a Sobolev space, the nonlinear part of the solution flow resides in a smoother space than the initial data for all times. We also obtain that the Sobolev norm of the nonlinear part of the evolution grows at most polynomially. As an application of the smoothing estimate, we study the long term dynamics of the forced and weakly damped Davey-Stewartson system. In this regard we give a new proof for the existence and smoothness of the global attractors in the energy sp…
In this paper, we prove that if the initial data $θ_0$ and its Riesz transforms ($\mathcal{R}_1(θ_0)$ and $\mathcal{R}_2(θ_0)$) belong to the space $(\overline{S(\mathbb{R}^2))}^{B_{\infty}^{1-2α,\infty}}$, where $α\in ]1/2,1[$, then the 2D Quasi-Geostrophic equation with dissipation $α$ has a unique global in time solution $θ$. Moreover, we show that if in addition $θ_0 \in X$ for some functional space $X$ such as Lebesgue, Sobolev and Besov's spaces then the solution $θ$ belongs to the space $C([0,+\infty [,X).$
In this paper we consider the Zakharov system with periodic boundary conditions in dimension one. In the first part of the paper, it is shown that for fixed initial data in a Sobolev space, the difference of the nonlinear and the linear evolution is in a smoother space for all times the solution exists. The smoothing index depends on a parameter distinguishing the resonant and nonresonant cases. As a corollary, we obtain polynomial-in-time bounds for the Sobolev norms with regularity above the energy level. In the second part of the paper, we consider the forced and damped Zakharov system and …
In this paper, we establish Gevrey class regularity of solutions to a class of dissipative equations with an analytic nonlinearity in the whole space. This generalizes the results of Ferrari and Titi in the periodic space case with initial data in $L^2-$based Sobolev spaces to the $L^p$ setting and in the whole space. Our generalization also includes considering rougher initial data, in negative Sobolev spaces in some cases including the Navier-Stokes and the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, and allowing the dissipation operator to be a fractional Laplacian. Moreover, we derive global …
In this paper, we study the analytical smoothing effect of Cauchy problem for the incompressible Boussinesq equations. Precisely, we use the Fourier method to prove that the Sobolev H 1-solution to the incompressible Boussinesq equations in periodic domain is analytic for any positive time. So the incompressible Boussinesq equation admet exactly same smoothing effect properties of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
We prove local well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $\dot H^s(\mathbb{T})$, with $s>7/2$, for an initial value problem for a nonlocal, cubically nonlinear, dispersive equation that provides an approximate description of the evolution of surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) fronts with small slopes.
Let $0<σ<n/2$ and $H=(-Δ)^σ+V(x)$ be Schrödinger type operators on $\mathbb R^n$ with a class of scaling-critical potentials $V(x)$, which include the Hardy potential $a|x|^{-2σ}$ with a sharp coupling constant $a\ge -C_{σ,n}$ ($C_{σ,n}$ is the best constant of Hardy's inequality of order $σ$). In the present paper we consider several sharp global estimates for the resolvent and the solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation associated with $H$. In the case of the subcritical coupling constant $a>-C_{σ,n}$, we first prove {\it uniform resolvent estimates} of Kato--Yajima type for all …
We prove smoothing estimates for velocity averages of the kinetic transport equation in hyperbolic Sobolev spaces at the critical regularity, leading to a complete characterisation of the allowable regularity exponents. Such estimates will be deduced from some mixed-norm estimates for the cone multiplier operator at a certain critical index. Our argument is not particular to the geometry of the cone and we illustrate this by establishing analogous estimates for the paraboloid.
A polynomial-in-time growth bound is established for global Sobolev $H^s(\mathbb T)$ solutions to the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the circle with $s>1$. These bounds are derived as a consequence of a nonlinear smoothing effect for an appropriate gauge-transformed version of the periodic Cauchy problem, according to which a solution with its linear part removed possesses higher spatial regularity than the initial datum associated with that solution.
In this paper we prove that in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, in the case of no bound states, the scattering map of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) on $\mathbb R$ is a perturbation of the Fourier transform by a regularizing operator. As an application of this result, we show that the difference of the KdV flow and the corresponding Airy flow is 1-smoothing.
We prove smoothing properties of the solutions of the Benjamin-Ono equation in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ for any $s\ge 0$. To this end we show that Tao's gauge transform is a high frequency approximation of the nonlinear Fourier transform $Φ$ for the Benjamin-Ono equation, constructed in our previous work. The results of this paper are manifestations of the quasi-linear character of the Benjamin-Ono equation.

In this paper we develop elements of the global calculus of Fourier integral operators in $R^n$ under minimal decay assumptions on phases and amplitudes. We also establish global weighted Sobolev $L^2$ estimates for a class of Fourier integral operators that appears in the analysis of global smoothing problems for dispersive partial differential equations. As an application, we exhibit a new type of smoothing estimates for hyperbolic equations, where the decay of data in space is quantitatively translated into the time decay of solutions.
The article first studies the propagation of well prepared high frequency waves with small amplitude $\eps$ near constant solutions for entropy solutions of multidimensional nonlinear scalar conservation laws. Second, such oscillating solutions are used to highlight a conjecture of Lions, Perthame, Tadmor, (1994), about the maximal regularizing effect for nonlinear conservation laws. For this purpose, a new definition of nonlinear flux is stated and compared to classical definitions. Then it is proved that the smoothness expected in Sobolev spaces cannot be exceeded.
We consider the Hirota-Satsuma system, a coupled KdV-type system, with periodic boundary conditions. The first part of the paper concerns with the smoothing estimates for the system. More precisely, it is shown that, for initial data in a Sobolev space, the difference of the nonlinear and linear evolutions lies in a smoother space. The smoothing gain we obtain depends very much on the arithmetic nature of the coupling parameter $a$ which determines the structure of the resonant sets in the estimates. In the second part, we address the forced and damped Hirota-Satsuma system and obtain counterp…
This paper is about the evolution of a temperature front governed by the Surface quasi-geostrophic equation. The existence part of that program within the scale of Sobolev spaces was obtained by one of the authors [10]. Here we revisit that proof introducing some new tools and points of view which allow us to conclude the also needed uniqueness result.
We consider reaction-diffusion equations either posed on Riemannian manifolds or in the Euclidean weighted setting, with pow\-er-type nonlinearity and slow diffusion of porous medium time. We consider the particularly delicate case $p<m$ in problem (1.1), a case largely left open in [21] even when the initial datum is smooth and compactly supported. We prove global existence for L$^m$ data, and a smoothing effect for the evolution, i.e. that solutions corresponding to such data are bounded at all positive times with a quantitative bound on their L$^\infty$ norm. As a consequence of this fact a…
