In this work, we study the critical long-range percolation on $\mathbb{Z}$, where an edge connects $i$ and $j$ independently with probability $1-\exp\{-β|i-j|^{-2}\}$ for some fixed $β>0$. Viewing this as a random electric network where each edge has a unit conductance, we show that with high probability the effective resistances from the origin 0 to $[-N, N]^c$ and from the interval $[-N,N]$ to $[-2N,2N]^c$ (conditioned on no edge joining $[-N,N]$ and $[-2N,2N]^c$) both have a polynomial lower bound in $N$. Our bound holds for all $β>0$ and thus rules out a potential phase transition (around $β= 1$) which seemed to be a reasonable possibility.
Let $\mathcal{C}^n$ be the largest open cluster for supercritical Bernoulli bond percolation in $[-n, n]^d \cap \mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d \ge 2$. We obtain a sharp estimate for the effective resistance on $\mathcal{C}^n$. As an application we show that the cover time for the simple random walk on $\mathcal{C}^n$ is comparable to $n^d (\log n)^2$. Noting that the cover time for the simple random walk on $[-n, n]^d \cap \mathbb{Z}^d$ is of order $n^d \log n$ for $d \ge 3$ (and of order $n^2 (\log n)^2$ for $d = 2$), this gives a quantitative difference between the two random walks for $d \ge 3$.
We rigorously prove a form of disorder-resistance for a class of one-dimensional cellular automaton rules, including some that arise as boundary dynamics of two-dimensional solidification rules. Specifically, when started from a random initial seed on an interval of length $L$, with probability tending to one as $L\to\infty$, the evolution is a replicator. That is, a region of space-time of density one is filled with a spatially and temporally periodic pattern, punctuated by a finite set of other finite patterns repeated at a fractal set of locations. On the other hand, the same rules exhibit …
An isoperimetric upper bound on the resistance is given. As a corollary we resolve two problems, regarding mean commute time on finite graphs and resistance on percolation clusters. Further conjectures are presented.
The ring of symmetric functions has a basis of dual Grothendieck polynomials that are inhomogeneous $K$-theoretic deformations of Schur polynomials. We prove that dual Grothendieck polynomials determine column distributions for a directed last-passage percolation model.
In this paper we study percolation on a roughly transitive graph G with polynomial growth and isoperimetric dimension larger than one. For these graphs we are able to prove that p_c < 1, or in other words, that there exists a percolation phase. The main results of the article work for both dependent and independent percolation processes, since they are based on a quite robust renormalization technique. When G is transitive, the fact that p_c < 1 was already known before. But even in that case our proof yields some new results and it is entirely probabilistic, not involving the use of Gromov's …
Schramm's Locality Conjecture asserts that the value of the critical percolation parameter $p_c$ of a graph satisfying $p_c<1$ depends only on its local structure. In this note, we prove this conjecture in the particular case of transitive graphs with polynomial growth. Our proof relies on two recent works about such graphs, namely supercritical sharpness of percolation by the same authors and a finitary structure theorem by Tessera and Tointon.
We consider Lipschitz percolation in $d+1$ dimensions above planes tilted by an angle $γ$ along one or several coordinate axes. In particular, we are interested in the asymptotics of the critical probability as $d \to \infty$ as well as $γ\to π/4.$ Our principal results show that the convergence of the critical probability to 1 is polynomial as $d\to \infty$ and $γ\to π/4.$ In addition, we identify the correct order of this polynomial convergence and in $d=1$ we also obtain the correct prefactor.
We consider simple random walk on the incipient infinite cluster for the spread-out model of oriented percolation on $Z^d \times Z_+$. In dimensions $d>6$, we obtain bounds on exit times, transition probabilities, and the range of the random walk, which establish that the spectral dimension of the incipient infinite cluster is 4/3, and thereby prove a version of the Alexander--Orbach conjecture in this setting. The proof divides into two parts. One part establishes general estimates for simple random walk on an arbitrary infinite random graph, given suitable bounds on volume and effective resi…
We study a general class of percolation models in Euclidean space including long-range percolation, scale-free percolation, the weight-dependent random connection model and several other previously investigated models. Our focus is on the weak decay regime, in which inter-cluster long-range connection probabilities fall off polynomially with small exponent, and for which we establish several structural properties. Chief among them are the continuity of the bond percolation function and the transience of infinite clusters.
We consider critical oriented Bernoulli percolation on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We prove a Russo-Seymour-Welsh type result which allows us to derive several new results concerning the critical behavior: - We establish that the probability that the origin is connected to distance $n$ decays polynomially fast in $n$. - We prove that the critical cluster of the origin conditioned to survive to distance $n$ has a typical width $w_n$ satisfying $εn^{2/5} < w_n < n^{1-ε}$ for some $ε> 0$. The sub-linear polynomial fluctuations contrast with the supercritical regime where $w_n$ is known to …
In 1993 van den Berg and Kesten proved a strict monotonicity theorem for first passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \ge 2$: given two probability measures $ν$ and $\tildeν$ with finite mean, if $\tildeν$ is strictly more variable than $ν$ and $ν$ is subcritical in an appropriate sense, the time constant associated to $\tildeν$ is strictly smaller than the time constant associated to $ν$. In this paper, an analogous result is proven for (not necessarily almost-transitive) graphs of strict polynomial growth and for bounded degree graphs quasi-isometric to trees which satisfy a certain geome…
We study the asymptotic behavior the exit times of random walk from Euclidean balls around the origin of the incipient infinite cluster in a manner inspired by [26]. We do this by obtaining bounds on the effective resistance between the origin and the boundary of these Euclidean balls. We show that the geometric properties of long-range percolation clusters are significantly different from those of finite-range clusters. We also study the behavior of random walk on the backbone of the IIC and we prove that the Alexander-Orbach conjecture holds for the incipient infinite cluster in high dimensi…
In this work we consider the two-dimensional percolation model arising from the majority dynamics process at a given time $t\in\mathbb{R}_+$. We show the emergence of a sharp threshold phenomenon for the box crossing event at the critical probability parameter $p_c(t)$ with polynomial size window. We then use this result in order to obtain stretched-exponential bounds on the one-arm event probability in the subcritical phase. Our results are based on differential inequalities derived from the OSSS inequality, inspired by the recent developments by Ahlberg, Broman, Griffiths, and Morris and by …
Let G be a planar graph with polynomial growth and isoperimetric dimension bigger than 1. Then the critical p for Bernoulli percolation on G satisfies p<1.
Assign to each vertex of the one-dimensional torus i.i.d. weights with a heavy-tail of index $τ-1>0$. Connect then each couple of vertices with probability roughly proportional to the product of their weights and that decays polynomially with exponent $α>0$ in their distance. The resulting graph is called scale-free percolation. The goal of this work is to study the mixing time of the simple random walk on this structure. We depict a rich phase diagram in $α$ and $τ$. In particular we prove that the presence of hubs can speed up the mixing of the chain. We use different techniques for each pha…

In first-passage percolation, one assigns i.i.d. nonnegative weights $(t_e)$ to the edges of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and studies the induced distance (passage time) $T(x,y)$ between vertices $x$ and $y$. It is known that for $d=2$, the fluctuations of $T(x,y)$ are at least order $\sqrt{\log |x-y|}$ under mild assumptions on $t_e$. We study the question of fluctuation lower bounds for $T_n$, the minimal passage time between two opposite sides of an $n$ by $n$ square. The main result is that, under a curvature assumption, this quantity has fluctuations at least of order $n^{1/8-ε}$ for any $ε>0$ when the…
Two infinite 0-1 sequences are called compatible when it is possible to cast out 0's from both in such a way that they become complementary to each other. Answering a question of Peter Winkler, we show that if the two 0-1-sequences are random i.i.d. and independent from each other, with probability p of 1's, then if p is sufficiently small they are compatible with positive probability. The question is equivalent to a certain dependent percolation with a power-law behavior: the probability that the origin is blocked at distance n but not closer decreases only polynomially fast and not, as usual…
We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n…
Three-dimensional three-colour percolation on a lattice made of tetrahedra is a direct generalization of two-dimensional two-colour percolation on the triangular lattice. The interfaces between one-colour clusters are made of bicolour surfaces and tricolour non-intersecting and non-self-intersecting curves. Because of the three-dimensional space, these curves describe knots and links. The present paper presents a construction of such random knots using particular boundary conditions and a numerical study of some invariants of the knots. The results are sources of precise conjectures about the …
In this article we study percolation on the Cayley graph of a free product of groups. The critical probability $p_c$ of a free product $G_1*G_2*...*G_n$ of groups is found as a solution of an equation involving only the expected subcritical cluster size of factor groups $G_1,G_2,...,G_n$. For finite groups these equations are polynomial and can be explicitly written down. The expected subcritical cluster size of the free product is also found in terms of the subcritical cluster sizes of the factors. In particular, we prove that $p_c$ for the Cayley graph of the modular group $\hbox{PSL}_2(\mat…
The minimal spanning forest on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ is known to consist of a single tree for $d \leq 2$ and is conjectured to consist of infinitely many trees for large $d$. In this paper, we prove that there is a single tree for quasi-planar graphs such as $\mathbb{Z}^{2}\times {\{0,\ldots,k\}}^{d-2}$. Our method relies on generalizations of the "Gluing Lemma" of arXiv:1401.7130. A related result is that critical Bernoulli percolation on a slab satisfies the box-crossing property. Its proof is based on a new Russo-Seymour-Welsh type theorem for quasi-planar graphs. Thus, at criticality, the proba…
For a general class of percolation models with long-range correlations on $\mathbb Z^d$, $d\geq 2$, introduced in arXiv:1212.2885, we establish regularity conditions of Barlow arXiv:math/0302004 that mesoscopic subballs of all large enough balls in the unique infinite percolation cluster have regular volume growth and satisfy a weak Poincaré inequality. As immediate corollaries, we deduce quenched heat kernel bounds, parabolic Harnack inequality, and finiteness of the dimension of harmonic functions with at most polynomial growth. Heat kernel bounds and the quenched invariance principle of arX…
We show that random walk on the incipient infinite cluster (IIC) of two-dimensional critical percolation is subdiffusive in the chemical distance (i.e., in the intrinsic graph metric). Kesten (1986) famously showed that this is true for the Euclidean distance, but it is known that the chemical distance is typically asymptotically larger. More generally, we show that subdiffusivity in the chemical distance holds for stationary random graphs of polynomial volume growth, as long as there is a multi-scale way of covering the graph so that "deep patches" have "thin backbones". Our estimates are qua…
We prove the sharpness of the phase transition for speed in the biased random walk on the supercritical percolation cluster on Z^d. That is, for each d at least 2, and for any supercritical parameter p > p_c, we prove the existence of a critical strength for the bias, such that, below this value, the speed is positive, and, above the value, it is zero. We identify the value of the critical bias explicitly, and, in the sub-ballistic regime, we find the polynomial order of the distance moved by the particle. Each of these conclusions is obtained by investigating the geometry of the traps that ar…
