In this paper, we propose a deep learning-enhanced multigrid solver for high-frequency and heterogeneous Helmholtz equations. By applying spectral analysis, we categorize the iteration error into characteristic and non-characteristic components. We eliminate the non-characteristic components by a multigrid wave cycle, which employs carefully selected smoothers on each grid. We diminish the characteristic components by a learned phase function and the approximate solution of an advection-diffusion-reaction (ADR) equation, which is solved using another multigrid V-cycle on a coarser scale, referred to as the ADR cycle. The resulting solver, termed Wave-ADR-NS, enables the handling of error components with varying frequencies and overcomes constraints on the number of grid points per wavelength on coarse grids. Furthermore, we provide an efficient implementation using differentiable programming, making Wave-ADR-NS an end-to-end Helmholtz solver that incorporates parameters learned through a semi-supervised training. Wave-ADR-NS demonstrates robust generalization capabilities for both in-distribution and out-of-distribution velocity fields of varying difficulty. Comparative experiments with other multigrid methods validate its superior performance in solving heterogeneous 2D Helmholtz equations with wavenumbers exceeding 2000.

One of the main tools for solving linear systems arising from the discretization of the Helmholtz equation is the shifted Laplace preconditioner, which results from the discretization of a perturbed Helmholtz problem $-Δu - (k^2 + i \varepsilon )u = f$ where $0 \neq \varepsilon \in \mathbb{R}$ is an absorption parameter. In this work we revisit the idea of combining the shifted Laplace preconditioner with two-level deflation and apply it to Helmholtz problems discretized with linear finite elements. We use the convergence theory of GMRES based on the field of values to prove that GMRES applied…
Solving the indefinite Helmholtz equation is not only crucial for the understanding of many physical phenomena but also represents an outstandingly-difficult benchmark problem for the successful application of numerical methods. Here we introduce a new approach for evolving efficient preconditioned iterative solvers for Helmholtz problems with multi-objective grammar-guided genetic programming. Our approach is based on a novel context-free grammar, which enables the construction of multigrid preconditioners that employ a tailored sequence of operations on each discretization level. To find sol…
In this paper we present a new highly efficient calculation method for the far field amplitude pattern that arises from scattering problems governed by the d-dimensional Helmholtz equation and, by extension, Schrödinger's equation. The new technique is based upon a reformulation of the classical real-valued Green's function integral for the far field amplitude to an equivalent integral over a complex domain. It is shown that the scattered wave, which is essential for the calculation of the far field integral, can be computed very efficiently along this complex contour (or manifold, in multiple…

In this paper, a generalized finite element method (GFEM) with optimal local approximation spaces for solving high-frequency heterogeneous Helmholtz problems is systematically studied. The local spaces are built from selected eigenvectors of carefully designed local eigenvalue problems defined on generalized harmonic spaces. At both continuous and discrete levels, $(i)$ wavenumber explicit and nearly exponential decay rates for local and global approximation errors are obtained without any assumption on the size of subdomains; $(ii)$ a quasi-optimal convergence of the method is established by …
Due to its highly oscillating solution, the Helmholtz equation is numerically challenging to solve. To obtain a reasonable solution, a mesh size that is much smaller than the reciprocal of the wavenumber is typically required (known as the pollution effect). High order schemes are desirable, because they are better in mitigating the pollution effect. In this paper, we present a high order compact finite difference method for 2D Helmholtz equations with singular sources, which can also handle any possible combinations of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, and impedance) on a rectangular d…

In this paper, we present a data-driven approach to iteratively solve the discrete heterogeneous Helmholtz equation at high wavenumbers. In our approach, we combine classical iterative solvers with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to form a preconditioner which is applied within a Krylov solver. For the preconditioner, we use a CNN of type U-Net that operates in conjunction with multigrid ingredients. Two types of preconditioners are proposed 1) U-Net as a coarse grid solver, and 2) U-Net as a deflation operator with shifted Laplacian V-cycles. Following our training scheme and data-augmen…
A convergence theory for the $hp$-FEM applied to a variety of constant-coefficient Helmholtz problems was pioneered in the papers [Melenk-Sauter, 2010], [Melenk-Sauter, 2011], [Esterhazy-Melenk, 2012], [Melenk-Parsania-Sauter, 2013]. This theory shows that, if the solution operator is bounded polynomially in the wavenumber $k$, then the Galerkin method is quasioptimal provided that $hk/p \leq C_1$ and $p\geq C_2 \log k$, where $C_1$ is sufficiently small, $C_2$ is sufficiently large, and both are independent of $k,h,$ and $p$. The significance of this result is that if $hk/p= C_1$ and $p=C_2\l…

A crucial role in the theory of uncertainty quantification (UQ) of PDEs is played by the regularity of the solution with respect to the stochastic parameters; indeed, a key property one seeks to establish is that the solution is holomorphic with respect to (the complex extensions of) the parameters. In the context of UQ for the high-frequency Helmholtz equation, a natural question is therefore: how does this parametric holomorphy depend on the wavenumber $k$? The recent paper [Ganesh, Kuo, Sloan 2021] showed for a particular nontrapping variable-coefficient Helmholtz problem with affine depend…
We propose a discontinuous least squares finite element method for solving the Helmholtz equation. The method is based on the L2 norm least squares functional with the weak imposition of the continuity across the interior faces as well as the boundary conditions. We minimize the functional over the discontinuous polynomial spaces to seek numerical solutions. The wavenumber explicit error estimates to our method are established. The optimal convergence rate in the energy norm with respect to a fixed wavenumber is attained. The least squares functional can naturally serve as a posteriori estimat…

The hybrid Raviart-Thomas mixed discontinuous Galerkin (HRTMDG) method is proposed for solving the Helmholtz equation. With a new energy norm, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the HRTMDG method, and give its convergence analysis. The corresponding error estimate shows that the HRTMDG method has an optimal $L^2$-norm convergence accuracy which is independent of wavenumber.
In this manuscript, we develop an efficient algorithm to evaluate the azimuthal Fourier components of the Green's function for the Helmholtz equation in cylindrical coordinates. A computationally efficient algorithm for this modal Green's function is essential for solvers for electromagnetic scattering from bodies of revolution (e.g., radar cross sections, antennas). Current algorithms to evaluate this modal Green's function become computationally intractable when the source and target are close or when the wavenumber is large. Furthermore, most state of the art methods cannot be easily parall…

Due to its significance in terms of wave phenomena a considerable effort has been put into the design of preconditioners for the Helmholtz equation. One option to derive a preconditioner is to apply a multigrid method on a shifted operator. In such an approach, the wavenumber is shifted by some imaginary value. This step is motivated by the observation that the shifted problem can be more efficiently handled by iterative solvers when compared to the standard Helmholtz equation. However, up to now, it is not obvious what the best strategy for the choice of the shift parameter is. It is well kno…
We use the Method of Difference Potentials (MDP) to solve a non-overlapping domain decomposition formulation of the Helmholtz equation. The MDP reduces the Helmholtz equation on each subdomain to a Calderon's boundary equation with projection on its boundary. The unknowns for the Calderon's equation are the Dirichlet and Neumann data. Coupling between neighboring subdomains is rendered by applying their respective Calderon's equations to the same data at the common interface. Solutions on individual subdomains are computed concurrently using a straightforward direct solver. We provide numerica…
