This paper describes the 6th Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) Competition, which is part of the respective Workshop held in conjunction with IEEE CVPR 2024. The 6th ABAW Competition addresses contemporary challenges in understanding human emotions and behaviors, crucial for the development of human-centered technologies. In more detail, the Competition focuses on affect related benchmarking tasks and comprises of five sub-challenges: i) Valence-Arousal Estimation (the target is to estimate two continuous affect dimensions, valence and arousal), ii) Expression Recognition (the target is to recognise between the mutually exclusive classes of the 7 basic expressions and 'other'), iii) Action Unit Detection (the target is to detect 12 action units), iv) Compound Expression Recognition (the target is to recognise between the 7 mutually exclusive compound expression classes), and v) Emotional Mimicry Intensity Estimation (the target is to estimate six continuous emotion dimensions). In the paper, we present these Challenges, describe their respective datasets and challenge protocols (we outline the evaluation metrics) and present the baseline systems as well as their obtained performance. More information for the Competition can be found in: https://affective-behavior-analysis-in-the-wild.github.io/6th.

Facial affective behavior analysis is important for human-computer interaction. 5th ABAW competition includes three challenges from Aff-Wild2 database. Three common facial affective analysis tasks are involved, i.e. valence-arousal estimation, expression classification, action unit recognition. For the three challenges, we construct three different models to solve the corresponding problems to improve the results, such as data unbalance and data noise. For the experiments of three challenges, we train the models on the provided training data and validate the models on the validation data.
In recent years, transformer architecture has been a dominating paradigm in many applications, including affective computing. In this report, we propose our transformer-based model to handle Emotion Classification Task in the 5th Affective Behavior Analysis In-the-wild Competition. By leveraging the attentive model and the synthetic dataset, we attain a score of 0.4775 on the validation set of Aff-Wild2, the dataset provided by the organizer.
Action Unit (AU) Detection is the branch of affective computing that aims at recognizing unitary facial muscular movements. It is key to unlock unbiased computational face representations and has therefore aroused great interest in the past few years. One of the main obstacles toward building efficient deep learning based AU detection system is the lack of wide facial image databases annotated by AU experts. In that extent the ABAW challenge paves the way toward better AU detection as it involves a 2M frames AU annotated dataset. In this paper, we present our submission to the ABAW3 challenge.…

This paper explores an expression-related self-supervised learning (SSL) method (ContraWarping) to perform expression classification in the 5th Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition. Affective datasets are expensive to annotate, and SSL methods could learn from large-scale unlabeled data, which is more suitable for this task. By evaluating on the Aff-Wild2 dataset, we demonstrate that ContraWarping outperforms most existing supervised methods and shows great application potential in the affective analysis area. Codes will be released on: https://github.com/youqingxiaozhua/…

There is a growing interest in affective computing research nowadays given its crucial role in bridging humans with computers. This progress has been recently accelerated due to the emergence of bigger data. One recent advance in this field is the use of adversarial learning to improve model learning through augmented samples. However, the use of latent features, which is feasible through adversarial learning, is not largely explored, yet. This technique may also improve the performance of affective models, as analogously demonstrated in related fields, such as computer vision. To expand this …

In this paper, we propose the solution to the Multi-Task Learning (MTL) Challenge of the 4th Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition. The task of ABAW is to predict frame-level emotion descriptors from videos: discrete emotional state; valence and arousal; and action units. Although researchers have proposed several approaches and achieved promising results in ABAW, current works in this task rarely consider interactions between different emotion descriptors. To this end, we propose a novel end to end architecture to achieve full integration of different types of information…

This paper describes the proposed methodology, data used and the results of our participation in the ChallengeTrack 2 (Expr Challenge Track) of the Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) Competition 2020. In this competition, we have used a proposed deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model to perform automatic facial expression recognition (AFER) on the given dataset. Our proposed model has achieved an accuracy of 50.77% and an F1 score of 29.16% on the validation set.
Facial expression recognition (FER) in the wild is crucial for building reliable human-computer interactive systems. However, annotations of large scale datasets in FER has been a key challenge as these datasets suffer from noise due to various factors like crowd sourcing, subjectivity of annotators, poor quality of images, automatic labelling based on key word search etc. Such noisy annotations impede the performance of FER due to the memorization ability of deep networks. During early learning stage, deep networks fit on clean data. Then, eventually, they start overfitting on noisy labels du…
