Facial Action Coding System is an approach for modeling the complexity of human emotional expression. Automatic action unit (AU) detection is a crucial research area in human-computer interaction. This paper describes our submission to the third Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition 2022. We proposed a method for detecting facial action units in the video. At the first stage, a lightweight CNN-based feature extractor is employed to extract the feature map from each video frame. Then, an attention module is applied to refine the attention map. The attention encoded vector is derived using a weighted sum of the feature map and the attention scores later. Finally, the sigmoid function is used at the output layer to make the prediction suitable for multi-label AUs detection. We achieved a macro F1 score of 0.48 on the ABAW challenge validation set compared to 0.39 from the baseline model.

Facial affective behavior analysis is important for human-computer interaction. 5th ABAW competition includes three challenges from Aff-Wild2 database. Three common facial affective analysis tasks are involved, i.e. valence-arousal estimation, expression classification, action unit recognition. For the three challenges, we construct three different models to solve the corresponding problems to improve the results, such as data unbalance and data noise. For the experiments of three challenges, we train the models on the provided training data and validate the models on the validation data.
In this article, the results of our team for the fifth Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition are presented. The usage of the pre-trained convolutional networks from the EmotiEffNet family for frame-level feature extraction is studied. In particular, we propose an ensemble of a multi-layered perceptron and the LightAutoML-based classifier. The post-processing by smoothing the results for sequential frames is implemented. Experimental results for the large-scale Aff-Wild2 database demonstrate that our model achieves a much greater macro-averaged F1-score for facial expressio…

For computers to recognize human emotions, expression classification is an equally important problem in the human-computer interaction area. In the 3rd Affective Behavior Analysis In-The-Wild competition, the task of expression classification includes eight classes with six basic expressions of human faces from videos. In this paper, we employ a transformer mechanism to encode the robust representation from the backbone. Fusion of the robust representations plays an important role in the expression classification task. Our approach achieves 30.35\% and 28.60\% for the $F_1$ score on the valida…

To describe complex emotional states, psychologists have proposed multiple emotion descriptors: sparse descriptors like facial action units; continuous descriptors like valence and arousal; and discrete class descriptors like happiness and anger. According to Ekman and Friesen, 1969, facial action units are sign vehicles that convey the emotion message, while discrete or continuous emotion descriptors are the messages perceived and expressed by human. In this paper, we designed an architecture for multiple emotion descriptors estimation in participating the ABAW3 Challenge. Based on the theory…

In this paper, we present a simple yet efficient Vision Transformer-based approach for addressing the task of Action Units (AU) detection in the context of Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition. We employ the Video Vision Transformer(ViViT) Network to capture the temporal facial change in the video. Besides, to reduce massive size of the Vision Transformers model, we replace the ViV…
In this paper, we propose a new automatic Action Units (AUs) recognition method used in a competition, Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW). Our method tackles a problem of AUs label inconsistency among subjects by using pairwise deep architecture. While the baseline score is 0.31, our method achieved 0.67 in validation dataset of the competition.
Action Unit (AU) Detection is the branch of affective computing that aims at recognizing unitary facial muscular movements. It is key to unlock unbiased computational face representations and has therefore aroused great interest in the past few years. One of the main obstacles toward building efficient deep learning based AU detection system is the lack of wide facial image databases annotated by AU experts. In that extent the ABAW challenge paves the way toward better AU detection as it involves a 2M frames AU annotated dataset. In this paper, we present our submission to the ABAW3 challenge.…

Facial action unit recognition is an important task for facial analysis. Owing to the complex collection environment, facial action unit recognition in the wild is still challenging. The 3rd competition on affective behavior analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) has provided large amount of facial images with facial action unit annotations. In this paper, we introduce a facial action unit recognition method based on transfer learning. We first use available facial images with expression labels to train the feature extraction network. Then we fine-tune the network for facial action unit recognition.
