Affective behavior analysis plays an important role in human-computer interaction, customer marketing, health monitoring. ABAW Challenge and Aff-Wild2 dataset raise the new challenge for classifying basic emotions and regression valence-arousal value under in-the-wild environments. In this paper, we present an affective expression analysis model that deals with the above challenges. Our approach includes STAT and Temporal Module for fine-tuning again face feature model. We experimented on Aff-Wild2 dataset, a large-scale dataset for ABAW Challenge with the annotations for both the categorical and valence-arousal emotion. We achieved the expression score 0.543 and valence-arousal score 0.534 on the validation set.
Human affective recognition is an important factor in human-computer interaction. However, the method development with in-the-wild data is not yet accurate enough for practical usage. In this paper, we introduce the affective recognition method focusing on valence-arousal (VA) and expression (EXP) that was submitted to the Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) 2020 Contest. Since we considered that affective behaviors have many observable features that have their own time frames, we introduced multiple optimized time windows (short-term, middle-term, and long-term) into our analyzing …

This paper explores an expression-related self-supervised learning (SSL) method (ContraWarping) to perform expression classification in the 5th Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition. Affective datasets are expensive to annotate, and SSL methods could learn from large-scale unlabeled data, which is more suitable for this task. By evaluating on the Aff-Wild2 dataset, we demonstrate that ContraWarping outperforms most existing supervised methods and shows great application potential in the affective analysis area. Facial affective behavior analysis is important for human-computer interaction. 5th ABAW competition includes three challenges from Aff-Wild2 database. Three common facial affective analysis tasks are involved, i.e. valence-arousal estimation, expression classification, action unit recognition. For the three challenges, we construct three different models to solve the corresponding problems to improve the results, such as data unbalance and data noise. For the experiments of three challenges, we train the models on the provided training data and validate the models on the validation data.

The Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) 2022 Competition gives Affective Computing a large promotion. In this paper, we present our method of AU challenge in this Competition. We use improved IResnet100 as backbone. Then we train AU dataset in Aff-Wild2 on three pertained models pretrained by our private au and expression dataset, and Glint360K respectively. Finally, we ensemble the results of our models. We achieved F1 score (macro) 0.731 on AU validation set.
Automated affective computing in the wild setting is a challenging problem in computer vision. Existing annotated databases of facial expressions in the wild are small and mostly cover discrete emotions (aka the categorical model). There are very limited annotated facial databases for affective computing in the continuous dimensional model (e.g., valence and arousal). To meet this need, we collected, annotated, and prepared for public distribution a new database of facial emotions in the wild (called AffectNet). AffectNet contains more than 1,000,000 facial images from the Internet by querying…
This paper presents a neural network based method Multi-Task Affect Net(MTANet) submitted to the Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-Wild Challenge in FG2020. This method is a multi-task network and based on SE-ResNet modules. By utilizing multi-task learning, this network can estimate and recognize three quantified affective models: valence and arousal, action units, and seven basic emotions simultaneously. MTANet achieve Concordance Correlation Coefficient(CCC) rates of 0.28 and 0.34 for valence and arousal, F1-score of 0.427 and 0.32 for AUs detection and categorical emotion classification.
Affective Analysis is not a single task, and the valence-arousal value, expression class, and action unit can be predicted at the same time. Previous researches did not pay enough attention to the entanglement and hierarchical relation of these three facial attributes. We propose a novel model named feature pyramid networks for multi-task affect analysis. The hierarchical features are extracted to predict three labels and we apply a teacher-student training strategy to learn from pretrained single-task models. Extensive experiment results demonstrate the proposed model outperforms other models…

There is a growing interest in affective computing research nowadays given its crucial role in bridging humans with computers. This progress has been recently accelerated due to the emergence of bigger data. One recent advance in this field is the use of adversarial learning to improve model learning through augmented samples. However, the use of latent features, which is feasible through adversarial learning, is not largely explored, yet. This technique may also improve the performance of affective models, as analogously demonstrated in related fields, such as computer vision. To expand this …

However, for improved performance, not only past images but also future images should be used along with corresponding facial images, but there are obstacles to the application of this technique to real-time environments. In this paper, we propose the causal affect prediction network (CAPNet), which uses only past facial images to predict corresponding affective valence and arousal. We train CAPNet to learn causal inference between past images…

This note gives a preliminary account of the transcoding or rechanneling problem between different stimuli as it is of interest for the natural interaction or affective computing fields. By the consideration of a simple example, namely the color response of an affective lamp to a sensed facial expression, we frame the problem within an information- theoretic perspective. A full justification in terms of the Information Bottleneck principle promotes a latent affective space, hitherto surmised as an appealing and intuitive solution, as a suitable mediator between the different stimuli.

Affective behaviour analysis has aroused researchers' attention due to its broad applications. However, it is labor exhaustive to obtain accurate annotations for massive face images. Thus, we propose to utilize the prior facial information via Masked Auto-Encoder (MAE) pretrained on unlabeled face images. Furthermore, we combine MAE pretrained Vision Transformer (ViT) and AffectNet pretrained CNN to perform multi-task emotion recognition. We notice that expression and action unit (AU) scores are pure and intact features for valence-arousal (VA) regression. As a result, we utilize AffectNet pre…

We then propose Grow-When-Required networks as personalized affective memories to learn individualized aspects of emotion expressions. Our model achieves state-of-t…
Real-world application requires affect perception models to be sensitive to individual differences in expression. As each user is different and expresses differently, these models need to personalise towards each individual to adequately capture their expressions and thus, model their affective state. Despite high performance on benchmarks, current approaches fall short in such adaptation. In this work, we propose the use of Continual Learning (CL) for affective computing as a paradigm for developing personalised affect perception.

Much of the work on automatic facial expression recognition relies on databases containing a certain number of emotion classes and their exaggerated facial configurations (generally six prototypical facial expressions), based on Ekman's Basic Emotion Theory. However, recent studies have revealed that facial expressions in our human life can be blended with multiple basic emotions. And the emotion labels for these in-the-wild facial expressions cannot easily be annotated solely on pre-defined AU patterns. How to analyze the action units for such complex expressions is still an open question. To…
