There is a growing interest in affective computing research nowadays given its crucial role in bridging humans with computers. This progress has been recently accelerated due to the emergence of bigger data. One recent advance in this field is the use of adversarial learning to improve model learning through augmented samples. However, the use of latent features, which is feasible through adversarial learning, is not largely explored, yet. This technique may also improve the performance of affective models, as analogously demonstrated in related fields, such as computer vision. To expand this analysis, in this work, we explore the use of latent features through our proposed adversarial-based networks for valence and arousal recognition in the wild. Specifically, our models operate by aggregating several modalities to our discriminator, which is further conditioned to the extracted latent features by the generator. Our experiments on the recently released SEWA dataset suggest the progressive improvements of our results. Finally, we show our competitive results on the Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-Wild (ABAW) challenge dataset

Automatic understanding of human affect using visual signals is of great importance in everyday human-machine interactions. Appraising human emotional states, behaviors and reactions displayed in real-world settings, can be accomplished using latent continuous dimensions (e.g., the circumplex model of affect). Valence (i.e., how positive or negative is an emotion) & arousal (i.e., power of the activation of the emotion) constitute popular and effective affect representations. Nevertheless, the majority of collected datasets this far, although containing naturalistic emotional states, have been…
We introduce DAiSEE, the first multi-label video classification dataset comprising of 9068 video snippets captured from 112 users for recognizing the user affective states of boredom, confusion, engagement, and frustration in the wild. The dataset has four levels of labels namely - very low, low, high, and very high for each of the affective states, which are crowd annotated and correlated with a gold standard annotation created using a team of expert psychologists. We have also established benchmark results on this dataset using state-of-the-art video classification methods that are available…

Complementary fashion recommendation aims at identifying items from different categories (e.g. shirt, footwear, etc.) that "go well together" as an outfit. Most existing approaches learn representation for this task using labeled outfit datasets containing manually curated compatible item combinations. In this work, we propose to learn representations for compatibility prediction from in-the-wild street fashion images through self-supervised learning by leveraging the fact that people often wear compatible outfits. Our pretext task is formulated such that the representations of different items…
We demonstrate that it is possible to perform face-related computer vision in the wild using synthetic data alone. The community has long enjoyed the benefits of synthesizing training data with graphics, but the domain gap between real and synthetic data has remained a problem, especially for human faces. Researchers have tried to bridge this gap with data mixing, domain adaptation, and domain-adversarial training, but we show that it is possible to synthesize data with minimal domain gap, so that models trained on synthetic data generalize to real in-the-wild datasets. We describe how to comb…

Deep learning-based scene text detection can achieve preferable performance, powered with sufficient labeled training data. However, manual labeling is time consuming and laborious. At the extreme, the corresponding annotated data are unavailable. Exploiting synthetic data is a very promising solution except for domain distribution mismatches between synthetic datasets and real datasets. To address the severe domain distribution mismatch, we propose a synthetic-to-real domain adaptation method for scene text detection, which transfers knowledge from synthetic data (source domain) to real data …

Analyzing human affect is vital for human-computer interaction systems. Most methods are developed in restricted scenarios which are not practical for in-the-wild settings. The Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) 2021 Contest provides a benchmark for this in-the-wild problem. In this paper, we introduce a multi-modal and multi-task learning method by using both visual and audio information. We use both AU and expression annotations to train the model and apply a sequence model to further extract associations between video frames. We achieve an AU score of 0.712 and an expression sco…

On existing public benchmarks, face forgery detection techniques have achieved great success. However, when used in multi-person videos, which often contain many people active in the scene with only a small subset having been manipulated, their performance remains far from being satisfactory. To take face forgery detection to a new level, we construct a novel large-scale dataset, called FFIW-10K, which comprises 10,000 high-quality forgery videos, with an average of three human faces in each frame. The manipulation procedure is fully automatic, controlled by a domain-adversarial quality assess…

Human affect recognition is an essential part of natural human-computer interaction. However, current methods are still in their infancy, especially for in-the-wild data. In this work, we introduce our submission to the Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) 2020 competition. We propose a two-stream aural-visual analysis model to recognize affective behavior from videos. Audio and image streams are first processed separately and fed into a convolutional neural network. Instead of applying recurrent architectures for temporal analysis we only use temporal convolutions. Furthermore, the …

In this paper we present our solution to extract albedo of branded labels for e-commerce products. To this end, we generate a large-scale photo-realistic synthetic data set for albedo extraction followed by training a generative model to translate images with diverse lighting conditions to albedo. We performed an extensive evaluation to test the generalisation of our method to in-the-wild images. From the experimental results, we observe that our solution generalises well compared to the existing method both in the unseen rendered images as well as in the wild image.

In the past, due to the unavailability of large amounts of data captured in real-life situations, research has mainly focused on controlled environments. However, recently, social media and platforms have been widely used. Moreover, deep learning has emerged as a means to solve visual analysis and recognition problems. This paper exploits these advances and presents significant contributions for affect analysis…

Fully convolutional models for dense prediction have proven successful for a wide range of visual tasks. Such models perform well in a supervised setting, but performance can be surprisingly poor under domain shifts that appear mild to a human observer. For example, training on one city and testing on another in a different geographic region and/or weather condition may result in significantly degraded performance due to pixel-level distribution shift. In this paper, we introduce the first domain adaptive semantic segmentation method, proposing an unsupervised adversarial approach to pixel pre…
Recent research has made the surprising finding that state-of-the-art deep learning models sometimes fail to generalize to small variations of the input. Adversarial training has been shown to be an effective approach to overcome this problem. However, its application has been limited to enforcing invariance to analytically defined transformations like $\ell_p$-norm bounded perturbations. Such perturbations do not necessarily cover plausible real-world variations that preserve the semantics of the input (such as a change in lighting conditions). In this paper, we propose a novel approach to ex…

To appraise such states displayed in real-world settings, we need expressive emotional descriptors that are capable of capturing and describing this complexity. In our multicultural world, affect-aware AI systems that support humans need the ability to perceive affect across variations in emotion expression patterns across cultures. These systems must perform well in cultural contexts without annotated affect datasets available for training models. A standard assumption in affective computing is that affect recognition models trained and used within the same culture (intracultural) will perform better than models trained on one culture and used on different cultures (intercultural). We test this assumption and present the first systematic study of int…
