In this paper, we present a refined approach to establish a global Lipschitz stability for an inverse source problem concerning the determination of forcing terms in the wave equation with mixed boundary conditions. It consists of boundary conditions incorporating a dynamic boundary condition and Dirichlet boundary condition on disjoint subsets of the boundary. The primary contribution of this article is the rigorous derivation of a sharp Carleman estimate for the wave system with a dynamic boundary condition. In particular, our findings complete and drastically improve the earlier results established by Gal and Tebou [SIAM J. Control Optim., 55 (2017), 324-364]. This is achieved by using a different weight function to overcome some relevant difficulties. As for the stability proof, we extend to dynamic boundary conditions a recent argument avoiding cut-off functions. Finally, we also show that our developed Carleman estimate yields a sharp boundary controllability result.
This paper presents an inverse problem for the nonlinear 1-d Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (K-S) equation. More precisely, we study the nonlinear inverse problem of retrieving the anti-diffusion coefficient from the measurements of the solution on a part of the boundary and at some positive time everywhere. Uniqueness and Lipschitz stability for this inverse problem are proven with the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method. The proof is based on a global Carleman estimate for the linearized K-S equation.
We consider inverse problems for the first and half order time fractional equation. We establish the stability estimates of Lipschitz type in inverse source and inverse coefficient problems by means of the Carleman estimates.
We are interested in the inverse problem of the determination of the potential $p(x), x\inΩ\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ from the measurement of the normal derivative $\partial_νu$ on a suitable part $Γ_0$ of the boundary of $Ω$, where $u$ is the solution of the wave equation $\partial_{tt}u(x,t)-Δu(x,t)+p(x)u(x,t)=0$ set in $Ω\times(0,T)$ and given Dirichlet boundary data. More precisely, we will prove local uniqueness and stability for this inverse problem and the main tool will be a global Carleman estimate, result also interesting by itself.
In this work, we shall study the nonlinear inverse problems of recovering the Robin coefficients in elliptic and parabolic systems of second order, and establish their local Lipschitz stabilities. Some local Lipschitz stability was derived for an elliptic inverse Robin problem. We shall first restructure the arguments in \cite{chou04} for the local Lipschitz stability so that the stability follows from three basic conditions for the elliptic inverse Robin problem. The new arguments are then generalized to help establish a novel local Lipschitz stability for parabolic inverse Robin problems.
In this paper, we prove the global existence of the weak solution to the mean field kinetic equation derived from the $N$-particle Newtonian system. For $L^1\cap L^\infty$ initial data, the solvability of the mean field kinetic equation can be obtained by using uniform estimates and compactness arguments while the difficulties arising from the non-local non-linear interaction are tackled appropriately using the Aubin-Lions compact embedding theorem.
This paper is concerned with an inverse source problem for the three-dimensional Helmholtz equation by a single boundary measurement at a fixed frequency. We show the Lipschitz stability under the assumption that the source function is piecewise constant on a domain which is made of a union of disjoint convex polyhedral subdomains..
We consider a fractional radiative transport equation, where the time derivative is of half order in the Caputo sense. By establishing Carleman estimates, we prove the global Lipschitz stability in determining the coefficients of the one-dimensional time-fractional radiative transport equation of half-order.
For linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we consider an inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying divergence-free factor. We prove the global Lipschitz stability by interior data over a time interval and velocity field at $t_0>0$ over the spatial domain. The key are Carleman estimates for the Navier-Stokes equations and the operator rot.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.
In this paper, we study an inverse problem for linear parabolic system with variable diffusion coefficients subject to dynamic boundary conditions. We prove a global Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem involving a simultaneous recovery of two source terms from a single measurement and interior observations, based on a recent Carleman estimate for such problems.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations, which aims to recover the electromagnetic material properties of a body from measurements on the boundary. We show that a Lipschitz continuous conductivity, electric permittivity, and magnetic permeability are uniquely determined by knowledge of all tangential electric and magnetic fields on the boundary of the body at a fixed frequency.
We consider an inverse problem of reconstructing two spatially varying coefficients in an acoustic equation of hyperbolic type using interior data of solutions with suitable choices of initial condition. Using a Carleman estimate, we prove Lipschitz stability estimates which ensures unique reconstruction of both coefficients. Our theoretical results are justified by numerical studies on the reconstruction of two unknown coefficients using noisy backscattered data.
We are interested in the inverse problem of recovering a Robin coefficient defined on some non accessible part of the boundary from available data on another part of the boundary in the nonstationary Stokes system. We prove a Lipschitz stability estimate under the \textit{a priori} assumption that the Robin coefficient lives in some compact and convex subset of a finite dimensional vectorial subspace of the set of continuous functions. To do so, we use a theorem proved by L. Bourgeois which establishes Lipschitz stability estimates for a class of inverse problems in an abstract framework.
In this paper, we consider the inverse problem of recovering a diffusion and absorption coefficients in steady-state optical tomography problem from the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. We first prove a Global uniqueness and Lipschitz stability estimate for the absorption parameter provided that the diffusion is known. Then, we prove a Lipschitz stability result for simultaneous recovery of diffusion and absorption. In both cases the parameters belong to a known finite subspace with a priori known bounds. The proofs relies on a monotonicity result combined with the techniques of localized potentials.…
In this note we reprove the Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem for the Schrödinger operator with finite-dimensional potentials by using quantitative Runge approximation results. This provides a quantification of the Schrödinger version of the argument from Kohn and Vogelius in Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1985) and presents a slight variant of the strategy considered by Alessandrini, de Hoop, Gaburro and Sincich in Asymptotic Analysis (2018) which may prove useful also in the context of more general operators.
We consider the electrostatic inverse boundary value problem also known as electrical impedance tomography (EIT) for the case where the conductivity is a piecewise linear function on a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and we show that a Lipschitz stability estimate for the conductivity in terms of the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map holds true.
In this paper we study the inverse boundary value problem of determining the potential in the Schrödinger equation from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, which is commonly accepted as an ill-posed problem in the sense that, under general settings, the optimal stability estimate is of logarithmic type. In this work, a Lipschitz type stability is established assuming a priori that the potential is piecewise constant with a bounded known number of unknown values.
We consider the stability issue of the inverse conductivity problem for a conformal class of anisotropic conductivities in terms of the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We extend here the stability result obtained by Alessandrini and Vessella in Advances in Applied Mathematics 35:207-241, where the authors considered the piecewise constant isotropic case.
We consider inverse problems of determining coefficients or time independent factors of source terms in radiative transport equations by means of Carleman estimate. We establish global Lipschitz stability results with an additional condition which requires some strict positivity for initial value or given factor of source, but we need not any extra conditions on domains of velocities, which is the main achievement of this article compared with the existing work by Machida and Yamamoto ({\it Inverse Problems} {\bf 30} 035010, 2014). The proof relies on a Carleman estimate with a piecewise linea…
We study the inverse boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at selected frequencies as the data. A conditional Lipschitz stability estimate for the inverse problem holds in the case of wavespeeds that are a linear combination of piecewise constant functions (following a domain partition) and gives a framework in which the scheme converges. The stability constant grows exponentially as the number of subdomains in the domain partition increases. We establish an order optimal upper bound for the stability constant. We eventually realize computational …
We consider the impedance tomography problem in the plane. Using Bukhgeim's scattering data for the Dirac problem, we prove that the conductivity is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neuman map
We prove uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering in the case the density of the medium has an unbounded gradient across $Σ\subseteqΓ=\partialΩ$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a Lipschitz boundary. This follows from a uniqueness result in inverse scattering for Schrödinger operators with singular $δ$-type potential supported on the surface $Γ$ and of strength $α\in L^{p}(Γ)$, $p>2$.
The approach to Lipschitz stability for uniformly parabolic equations introduced by Imanuvilov and Yamamoto in 1998 based on Carleman estimates, seems hard to apply to the case of Grushin-type operators studied in this paper. Indeed, such estimates are still missing for parabolic operators degenerating in the interior of the space domain. Nevertheless, we are able to prove Lipschitz stability results for inverse coefficient problems for such operators, with locally distributed measurements in arbitrary space dimension. For this purpose, we follow a strategy that combines Fourier decomposition …
An inverse problem of finding an obstacle and the boundary condition on its surface from the fixed-energy scattering data is studied. A new method is developed for a proof of the uniqueness results. The method does not use the discreteness of the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian in a bounded domain. Proof of the uniqueness results is based on the fact that the Hilbert space of square integrable functions is separable.
We shall study in this paper the Lipschitz type stabilities and convergence rates of Tikhonov regularization for the recovery of the radiativities in elliptic and parabolic systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The Lipschitz type stability estimates are derived. Due to the difficulty of the verification of the existing source conditions or nonlinearity conditions for the considered inverse radiativity problems in high dimensional spaces, some new variational source conditions are proposed. The conditions are rigorously verified in general dimensional spaces under the Lipschitz type stabi…
For a second order formally symmetric elliptic differential expression we show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map or Robin-to-Dirichlet map for suitably many energies on an arbitrarily small open subset of the boundary determines the self-adjoint operator with a Dirichlet boundary condition or with a (possibly non-self-adjoint) Robin boundary condition uniquely up to unitary equivalence. These results hold for general Lipschitz domains, which can be unbounded and may have a non-compact boundary, and under weak regularity assumptions on the coefficients of the differential expre…
In this article, for the radiative transport equation, we study inverse problems of determining a time independent scattering coefficient or total attenuation by boundary data on the complementary sub-boundary after making one time input of a pair of a positive initial value and boundary data on a suitable sub-boundary. The main results are Lipschitz stability estimates. We can also prove the reverse inequality, which means that our estimates for the inverse problems are the best possible. The proof is based on a Carleman estimate with a linear weight function.
We provide a general scheme, in the combined frameworks of Mathematical Scattering Theory and Factorization Method, for inverse scattering for the couple of self-adjoint operators $(\widetildeΔ,Δ)$, where $Δ$ is the free Laplacian in $L^{2}({\mathbb R}^{3})$ and $\widetildeΔ$ is one of its singular perturbations, i.e., such that the set $\{u\in H^{2}({\mathbb R}^{3})\cap \text{dom}(\widetildeΔ)\, :\, Δu=\widetildeΔu\}$ is dense. Typically $\widetildeΔ$ corresponds to a self-adjoint realization of the Laplace operator with some kind of boundary conditions imposed on a null subset; in particular…
We consider the inverse problem of determining some class of nonlinear terms appearing in an elliptic equation from boundary measurements. More precisely, we study the stability issue for this class of inverse problems. Under suitable assumptions, we prove a Lipschitz and a Hölder stability estimate associated with the determination of quasilinear and semilinear terms appearing in this class of elliptic equations from measurements restricted to an arbitrary parts of the boundary of the domain. Besides their mathematical interest, our stability estimates can be useful for improving numerical re…
We consider the problem to reconstruct a wave speed $c \in C^\infty(M)$ in a domain $M \subset \R^n$ from acoustic boundary measurements modelled by the hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $Λ$. We introduce a reconstruction formula for $c$ that is based on the Boundary Control method and incorporates features also from the complex geometric optics solutions approach. Moreover, we show that the reconstruction formula is locally Lipschitz stable for a low frequency component of $c^{-2}$ under the assumption that the Riemannian manifold $(M, c^{-2} dx^2)$ has a strictly convex function with no cr…
We consider the Kelvin-Voigt model for the viscoelasticity, and prove a Carleman estimate for functions without compact supports. Then we apply the Carleman estimate to prove the Lipschitz stability in determining a spatial varying function in an external source term of Kelvin-Voigt model by a single measurement. Finally as a related system, we consider an isothermal compressible fluid system and apply the Carleman estimate to establish the Lipschitz stability for an inverse source problem for the compressible fluid system.

The purpose of this note is to extend the $L^1$ averaging lemma of Golse and Saint-Raymond \cite{GolSR} to the case of a kinetic transport equation with a force field $F(x)\in W^{1,\infty}$. To this end, we will prove a local in time mixing property for the transport equation $\partial_t f + v.\nabla_x f + F.\nabla_v f =0$.
We study some hybrid inverse problems associated to BVP's for Schrödinger and Helmholtz type equations. The inverse problems we consider consist in the determination of coefficients from the knowledge of internal energies. We establish local Lipschitz stability inequalities as well as conditional Hölder stability inequalities.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé moduli for a piecewise constant elasticity tensor ${\mathbb C}= \sum_{j} {\mathbb C}_j χ_{D_j}$, where $\{D_j\}$ is a known finite partition of the body $Ω$, from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove that Lipschitz stability estimates can be derived under $C^{1,α}$ regularity assumptions on the interfaces.
We show that the inverse problems for a class of kinetic equations can be solved by classical tools in PDE analysis including energy estimates and the celebrated averaging lemma. Using these tools, we give a unified framework for the reconstruction of the absorption coefficient for transport equations in the subcritical and critical regimes. Moreover, we apply this framework to obtain, to the best of our knowledge, the first result in a nonlinear setting. We also extend the result of recovering the scattering coefficient in [14] from 3D to 2D convex domains.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering the optical properties of a highly-scattering medium from acousto-optic measurements. Using such measurements, we show that the scattering and absorption coefficients of the radiative transport equation can be reconstructed with Lipschitz stability by means of algebraic inversion formulas.
We show that the inverse problem of Calderon for conductivities in a two-dimensional Lipschitz domain is stable in a class of conductivities that are Dini continuous. This extends previous stability results when the conductivities are known to be Holder continuous.
We analyze the inverse problem of identifying the diffusivity coefficient of a scalar elliptic equation as a function of the resolvent operator. We prove that, within the class of measurable coefficients, bounded above and below by positive constants, the resolvent determines the diffusivity in an unique manner. Furthermore we prove that the inverse mapping from resolvent to the coefficient is Lipschitz in suitable topologies. This result plays a key role when applying greedy algorithms to the approximation of parameter-dependent elliptic problems in an uniform and robust manner, independent o…
We consider the inverse problem of determining the coupling coefficients in a two-state Schrödinger system. We prove a Lipschitz stability inequality for the zeroth and first order coupling terms by finitely many partial lateral measurements of the solution to the coupled Schrödinger equations.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of determining the potential $q$ in the equation $Δu + qu = 0$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, from local Cauchy data. A result of global Lipschitz stability is obtained in dimension $n\geq 3$ for potentials that are piecewise linear on a given partition of $Ω$. No sign, nor spectrum condition on $q$ is assumed, hence our treatment encompasses the reduced wave equation $Δu + k^2c^{-2}u=0$ at fixed frequency $k$.
In this paper we establish a global Carleman estimate for the fourth order Schrödinger equation posed on a $1-d$ finite domain. The Carleman estimate is used to prove the Lipschitz stability for an inverse problem consisting in retrieving a stationary potential in the Schrödinger equation from boundary measurements.
We consider relativistic plasma particles subjected to an external gravitation force in a $3$D half space whose boundary is a perfect conductor. When the mean free path is much bigger than the variation of electromagnetic fields, the collision effect is negligible. As an effective PDE, we study the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system and its local-in-time unique solvability in the space-time locally Lipschitz space, for several basic mesoscopic (kinetic) boundary conditions: the inflow, diffuse, and specular reflection boundary conditions. We construct weak solutions to these initial-boundary v…
We consider the inverse problem of reconstructing the optical parameters of the radiative transfer equation (RTE) from boundary measurements in the diffusion limit. In the diffusive regime (the Knudsen number $\mathsf{Kn}\ll 1$), the forward problem for the stationary RTE is well approximated by an elliptic equation. However, the connection between the inverse problem for the RTE and the inverse problem for the elliptic equation has not been fully developed. This problem is particularly interesting because the former one is mildly ill-posed , with a Lipschitz type stability estimate, while the…
