We give an explicit operator representation (via a sequential circuit and projection to symmetry subspaces) of Kramers-Wannier duality transformation in higher-dimensional subsystem symmetric models generalizing the construction in the 1D transverse-field Ising model. Using the Kramers-Wannier duality operator, we also construct the Kennedy-Tasaki transformation that maps subsystem symmetry-protected topological phases to spontaneous subsystem symmetry breaking phases, where the symmetry group for the former is either $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2$. This generalizes the recently proposed picture of one-dimensional Kennedy-Tasaki transformation as a composition of manipulations involving gauging and stacking symmetry-protected topological phases to higher dimensions.
Quantum entanglement under an extensive bipartition can reveal the critical boundary theory of a topological phase in the parameter space. In this study we demonstrate that the infinite-randomness fixed point for spin-1/2 degrees of freedom can emerge from an extensive random bipartition of the spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki chain. The nested entanglement entropy of the ground state of the reduced density matrix exhibits a logarithmic scaling with an effective central charge $\tilde{c} = 0.72 \pm 0.02 \approx \ln 2$. We further discuss, in the language of bulk quantum entanglement, how to …
Applying a symmetric bulk bipartition to one-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond solid (VBS) states for the integer spin-S Haldane gapped phase, we can create an array of fractionalized spin-S/2 edge states with the super unit cell $l$ in the reduced bulk system, and the topological properties encoded in the VBS wave functions can be revealed. The entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) with $l=even$ corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-S/2 model. For the even integer spins, the EH still describes the Haldane gapped phase. For the odd integer spins, however, the …
Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki constructed a spin-1 model that is isotropic in spins and possesses a provable finite gap above the ground state more than three decades ago. They also constructed models in two dimensions. Their construction has impacted subsequent research that is still active. In this review article, we review some selected the progresses, such as magnetic ordering of the AKLT models, emerging phases under deforming the AKLT Hamiltonians, symmetry-protected topological order in several AKLT models, their spectral gap, and applications for quantum computation.
The elementary excitation in the antiferromagnetic spin-1 model known as the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) Hamiltonian has been described alternatively as magnons or kink-like solitons (triplons). The latter, which we call the triplon throughout this paper, has been proven equivalent descriptions of the same magnon excitation and not an independent branch of excited states. On the other hand, no careful examination of multi-magnon and multi-triplon equivalence was made in the past. In this paper we prove that two-magnon and two-triplon states are also identical descriptions of the same ex…
We exploit a natural Projected Entangled-Pair State (PEPS) representation for the resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki loop (RAL) state. By taking advantage of PEPS-based analytical and numerical methods, we characterize the RAL states on various two-dimensional lattices. On square and honeycomb lattices, these states are critical since the dimer-dimer correlations decay as a power law. On kagome lattice, the RAL state has exponentially decaying correlation functions, supporting the scenario of a gapped spin liquid. We provide further evidence that the RAL state on the kagome lattice is a $\…
A symmetry-protected topological phase has nontrivial surface states in the presence of certain symmetries, which can either be gapless or be degenerate. In this work, we study the physical consequence of such gapless surface states at the bulk quantum phase transition (QPT) that spontaneously breaks these symmetries. The two-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki phase on a square lattice and its QPTs to Néel ordered phases are realized with the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on a decorated square lattice. With large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that even though the bulk QPTs …
The $S=1$ Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) quantum spin chain was the first rigorous example of an isotropic spin system in the Haldane phase. The conjecture that the $S=3/2$ AKLT model on the hexagonal lattice is also in a gapped phase has remained open, despite being a fundamental problem of ongoing relevance to condensed-matter physics and quantum information theory. Here we confirm this conjecture by demonstrating the size-independent lower bound $Δ>0.006$ on the spectral gap of the hexagonal model with periodic boundary conditions in the thermodynamic limit. Our approach consists of two…
We study the dynamical properties of both bulk and edge spins of a two-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model mainly by using the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method with stochastic analytic continuation. In the deep AKLT phase, we obtain a spin spectrum with flat band, which is a strong evidence for a localized state. Through the spectrum analysis, we see a clear continuous phase transition from the AKLT phase to the Néel phase in the model, and the energy gap becomes closed at the corresponding momentum point. In comparison with linear spin-wave theory, the d…
We argue that the $q$-deformed spin-1 AKLT Hamiltonian should be regarded as a representative of a symmetry protected topological phase. Even though it fails to exhibit any of the standard symmetries known to protect the Haldane phase it still displays all characteristics of this phase: Fractionalized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ boundary spins, non-trivial string order and - when using an appropriate definition - a two-fold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum. We trace these properties back to the existence of an $SO_q(3)$ quantum group symmetry and speculate about potential links to discrete duali…
Single-spin measurements on the ground state of an interacting spin lattice can be used to perform a quantum computation. We show how such measurements can mimic renormalization group transformations and remove the short-ranged variations of the state that can reduce the fidelity of a computation. This suggests that the quantum computational ability of a spin lattice could be a robust property of a quantum phase. We illustrate our idea with the ground state of a spin-1 chain, which can serve as a quantum computational wire not only at the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki point, but within the rotat…
We performed an exact diagonalization study of the spin liquid phase of the Multiple-Spin Exchange model on the triangular lattice. It is characterized by no Neel Long Range Order (NLRO), short-ranged magnetic correlations and a spin gap. We found no LRO in any local order parameter we investigated (chiral, dimer,...). The probable asymptotic ground state degeneracy is discussed. We argue that it could be of topological origin and that the system is probably not a chiral spin liquid. A possible relation to the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) phase is discussed.
Recently it has been shown that the non-local correlations needed for measurement based quantum computation (MBQC) can be revealed in the ground state of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model involving nearest neighbor spin-3/2 interactions on a honeycomb lattice. This state is not singular but resides in the disordered phase of ground states of a large family of Hamiltonians characterized by short-range-correlated valence bond solid states. By applying local filtering and adaptive single particle measurements we show that most states in the disordered phase can be reduced to a graph of…
We show that by examining the global geometric entanglement it is possible to identify "elusive" or hard to detect quantum phase transitions. We analyze several one-dimensional quantum spin chains and demonstrate the existence of non-analyticities in the geometric entanglement, in particular across a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and across a transition for a gapped deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki chain. The observed non-analyticities can be understood and classified in connection to the nature of the transitions, and are in sharp contrast to the analytic behavior of all the two-body red…
We generalize the hidden symmetry-breaking picture of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) order developed by Kennedy and Tasaki in the context of the Haldane phase. Our generalization applies to a wide class of SPT phases in one-dimensional spin chains, protected by an on-site representation of a finite abelian group. This generalization takes the form of a non-local unitary map that relates local symmetry-respecting Hamiltonians in an SPT phase to local Hamiltonians in a symmetry-broken phase. Using this unitary, we establish a relation between the two-point correlation functions that charac…

Under an appropriate symmetric extensive bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase, a bulk critical entanglement spectrum can be obtained, resembling the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the SPT phase from the trivial (vacuum) state. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry breaking phase transitions. For the $S=1$ SPT (Haldane) phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki exact wave function, the resulting critical entanglement spectrum has a residual entropy per lattice site $s_{r}=0.67602$, …
We study quantum entanglement in the ground state of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model defined on two-dimensional graphs with reflection and/or inversion symmetry. The ground state of this spin model is known as the valence-bond-solid state. We investigate the properties of reduced density matrix of a subsystem which is a mirror image of the other one. Thanks to the reflection symmetry, the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix can be obtained by numerically diagonalizing a real symmetric matrix whose elements are calculated by Monte Carlo integration. We calculate the von Neuma…
We study two-dimensional bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases which are protected by reflection symmetry and local symmetry [$Z_N\rtimes R$, $Z_N\times R$, U(1)$\rtimes R$, or U(1)$\times R$], in the search for two-dimensional bosonic analogs of topological crystalline insulators in integer-$S$ spin systems with reflection and spin-rotation symmetries. To classify them, we employ a Chern-Simons approach and examine the stability of edge states against perturbations that preserve the assumed symmetries. We find that SPT phases protected by $Z_N\rtimes R$ symmetry are classified a…
Optimizing translationally invariant infinite-Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS), we investigate the spin-2 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) and spin-1 Heisenberg models on the Kagome lattice as a function of magnetic field. We found that the magnetization curves offer a wide variety of compressible and incompressible phases. Incompressible nematic phases breaking the lattice $C_3$ rotation -- for which we propose simple qualitative pictures -- give rise to magnetization plateaux at reduced magnetization $m_z=5/6$ and $m_z=1/3$ for spin-2 and spin-1, respectively, in addition to the $m_…
A new kind of spin-1 chain Hamiltonian consisting of competing dimer and trimer projection operators is proposed. As the relative strengths and signs of the interactions are varied, the model exhibits a number of different phases including the gapped dimer phase and the gapless trimer phase with critical correlations described by a conformal field theory with central charge $c=2$. A symmetry-protected topological phase also exists in this model, even though the microscopic interactions are not the simple adiabatic extensions of the well-known Heisenberg and the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki mode…
Under an appropriate symmetric bulk bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry protected topological phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki matrix product state wave function for the odd integer spin chains, a bulk critical entanglement spectrum can be obtained, describing the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the topological phase from the trivial phase with the same symmetry. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry breaking phase transitions. Recently, the framework of matrix product states for topological phases with Ma…
This paper describes a semiclassical field-theory approach to the topological properties of spatially featureless Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki type valence bond solid ground states of antiferromagnets in spatial dimensions one to three. Using nonlinear sigma models set in the appropriate target manifold and augmented with topological terms, we argue that the path integral representation of the ground-state wave functional can correctly distinguish symmetry-protected topological ground states from topologically trivial ones. The symmetry-protection feature is demonstrated explicitly in terms of …
We present a unified perspective on symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in one dimension and address the open question of what characterizes their phase transitions. In the first part of this work we use symmetry as a guide to map various well-known fermionic and spin SPTs to a Kitaev chain with coupling of range $α\in \mathbb Z$. This unified picture uncovers new properties of old models --such as how the cluster state is the fixed point limit of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki state in disguise-- and elucidates the connection between fermionic and bosonic phases --with the Hubbard ch…
The models constructed by Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki describe a family of quantum antiferromagnets on arbitrary lattices, where the local spin S is an integer multiple M of half the lattice coordination number. The equal time quantum correlations in their ground states may be computed as finite temperature correlations of a classical O(3) model on the same lattice, where the temperature is given by T=1/M. In dimensions d=1 and d=2 this mapping implies that all AKLT states are quantum disordered. We consider AKLT states in d=3 where the nature of the AKLT states is now a question of det…
We study one-dimensional systems of two-orbital SU(4) fermionic cold atoms. In particular, we focus on an SU(4) spin model [named SU(4) $e$-$g$ spin model] that is realized in a low-energy state in the Mott insulator phase at the filling $n_g=3, n_e=1$ ($n_g, n_e$: numbers of atoms in ground and excited states, respectively). Our numerical study with the infinite-size density matrix renormalization group shows that the ground state of SU(4) $e$-$g$ spin model is a nontrivial symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase protected by $Z_4 \times Z_4$ symmetry. Specifically, we find that the ground…
One dimensional $(1d)$ interacting systems with local Hamiltonians can be studied with various well-developed analytical methods. Recently novel $1d$ physics was found numerically in systems with either spatially nonlocal interactions, or at the $1d$ boundary of $2d$ quantum critical points, and the critical fluctuation in the bulk also yields effective nonlocal interactions at the boundary. This work studies the edge states at the $1d$ boundary of $2d$ strongly interacting symmetry protected topological (SPT) states, when the bulk is driven to a disorder-order phase transition. We will take t…
We study $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in one-dimensional spin systems with $Z_3 \times Z_3$ symmetry. We construct ground-state wave functions of the matrix product form for nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_3$ phases and their parent Hamiltonian from a cocycle of the group cohomology $H^2(Z_3\times Z_3,U(1))$. The Hamiltonian is an SU(3) version of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model, consisting of bilinear and biquadratic terms of su(3) generators in the adjoint representation. A generalization to the SU($N$) case, the SU($N$) AKLT Hamiltonian, is also presented w…
