In a recent paper, Krawczyk proved that there are continuum many axiomatic extensions of global consequence associated with the modal system $E$ that do not admit the local deduction detachment theorem. In algebraic parlance, he showed that there are continuum many varieties of modal algebras lacking the congruence extension property. In this paper, we extend Krawczyk's results and construct a continuum of varieties of modal algebras that do not have the congruence extension property, but that do admit other, logically relevant properties, such as monotonicity, extensiveness, idempotency, normality, etc. This gives a continuum of axiomatic extensions of the corresponding modal systems not having the local deduction detachment theorem.
We prove that in the varieties where every compact congruence is a factor congruence and every nontrivial algebra contains a minimal subalgebra, a finitely presented algebra is projective if and only if it has every minimal algebra as its homomorphic image. Using this criterion of projectivity, we describe the primitive subquasivarieties of discriminator varieties that have a finite minimal algebra which embeds in every nontrivial algebra from this variety. In particular, we describe the primitive quasivarieties of discriminator varieties of monadic Heyting algebras, Heyting algebras with regu…
We study direct product representations of algebras in varieties. We collect several conditions expressing that these representations are "definable" in a first-order-logic sense, among them the concept of Definable Factor Congruences (DFC). The main results are that DFC is a Mal'cev property and that it is equivalent to all other conditions formulated; in particular we prove that V has DFC if and only if V has 0&1 and Boolean Factor Congruences. We also obtain an explicit first order definition of the kernel of the canonical projections via the terms associated to the Mal'cev condition for DF…
In this paper we prove that in the context of varieties with Right Existentially Definable Factor Congruences, definability of the property "e and f are complementary central elements", stability by complements and coextensivity of its respective algebraic category, are equivalent.
We provide a partial result on Taylor's modularity conjecture, and several related problems. Namely, we show that the interpretability join of two idempotent varieties that are not congruence modular is not congruence modular either, and we prove an analogue for idempotent varieties with a cube term. Also, similar results are proved for linear varieties and the properties of congruence modularity, having a cube term, congruence $n$-permutability for a fixed $n$, and satisfying a non-trivial congruence identity.
We denote by Conc(A) the semilattice of all finitely generated congruences of an (universal) algebra A, and we define Conc(V) as the class of all isomorphic copies of all Conc(A), for A in V, for any variety V of algebras. Let V and W be locally finite varieties of algebras such that for each finite algebra A in V there are, up to isomorphism, only finitely many B in W such that A and B have isomorphic congruence lattices, and every such B is finite. If Conc(V) is not contained in Conc(W), then there exists a semilattice of cardinality aleph 2 in Conc(V)-Conc(W). Our result extends to quasivar…
A variety V has Boolean factor congruences (BFC) if the set of factor congruences of every algebra in V is a distributive sublattice of its congruence lattice; this property holds in rings with unit and in every variety which has a semilattice operation. BFC has a prominent role in the study of uniqueness of direct product representations of algebras, since it is a strengthening of the refinement property. We provide an explicit Mal'cev condition for BFC. With the aid of this condition, it is shown that BFC is equivalent to a variant of the definability property (*), an open problem in R. Will…
Positive modal algebras are the positive-subreducts of modal algebras. We prove that the variety of positive S4-algebras is not locally finite. On the other hand, the free one-generated positive S4-algebra is shown to be finite. Moreover, we describe the bottom part of the lattice of varieties of positive S4-algebras. Building on this, we characterize (passively, hereditarily) structurally complete varieties of positive K4-algebras.
An early result in the theory of Natural Dualities is that an algebra with a near unanimity (NU) term is dualizable. A converse to this is also true: if V(A) is congruence distributive and A is dualizable, then A has an NU term. An important generalization of the NU term for congruence distributive varieties is the cube term for congruence modular (CM) varieties, and it has been thought that a similar characterization of dualizability for algebras in a CM variety would also hold. We prove that if A omits tame congruence types 1 and 5 (all locally finite CM varieties omit these types) and is du…
We introduce and study the Congruence Boolean Lifting Property (CBLP) for congruence--distributive universal algebras, as well as a property related to CBLP, which we have called $(\star )$. CBLP extends the so--called Boolean Lifting Properties (BLP) from MV--algebras, BL--algebras and residuated lattices, but differs from the BLP when particularized to bounded distributive lattices. Important classes of universal algebras, such as discriminator varieties, fulfill the CBLP. The main results of the present paper include a characterization theorem for congruence--distributive algebras with CBLP…
We denote by Conc(L) the semilattice of all finitely generated congruences of a lattice L. For varieties (i.e., equational classes) V and W of lattices such that V is contained neither in W nor its dual, and such that every simple member of W contains a prime interval, we prove that there exists a bounded lattice A in V with at most aleph 2 elements such that Conc(A) is not isomorphic to Conc(B) for any B in W. The bound aleph 2 is optimal. As a corollary of our results, there are continuum many congruence classes of locally finite varieties of (bounded) modular lattices.
A metric algebra is a metric variant of the notion of $Σ$-algebra, first introduced in universal algebra to deal with algebras equipped with metric structures such as normed vector spaces. In this paper, we showed metric versions of the variety theorem, which characterizes strict varieties (classes of metric algebras defined by metric equations) and continuous varieties (classes defined by a continuous family of basic quantitative inferences) by means of closure properties. To this aim, we introduce the notion of congruential pseudometric on a metric algebra, which corresponds to congruence in…
If V is a finitely generated variety such that the first-order theory of the finite members of V is decidable, we show that V is residually finite, and in fact has a finite bound on the sizes of subdirectly irreducible algebras. This result generalizes known results which assumed that V has modular congruence lattices. Our proof of the theorem in its full generality proceeds by showing that strongly solvable radicals of algebras in V are strongly abelian.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for the (first-order) theory of a universal class of algebraic structures (algebras) to admit a model completion, extending a characterization provided by Wheeler. For varieties of algebras that have equationally definable principal congruences and the compact intersection property, these conditions yield a more elegant characterization obtained (in a slightly more restricted setting) by Ghilardi and Zawadowski. Moreover, it is shown that under certain further assumptions on congruence lattices, the existence of a model completion implies that …
Topological cylindric algebras of dimension α, αany ordinal are cylindric algebras with dimension αexpanded with αS4 modalities. The S4 modalities in representable algebras are induced by a topology on the base of the representation of its cylindric reduct, that is not necessarily an Alexandrov topolgy. For α>2, the class of representable algebras is a variety that is not axiomatized by a finite schema, and in fact all complexity results on representations for cylindric algebras, proved by Andreka (concerning number of variables needed for axiomatizations) Hodkinson (on Sahlqvist axiomatizatio…
We present a functorial construction which, starting from a congruence $α$ of finite index in an algebra A, yields a new algebra C with the following properties: the congruence lattice of C is isomorphic to the interval of congruences between 0 and $α$ on A, this isomorphism preserves higher commutators and TCT types, and C inherits all idempotent Maltsev conditions from A. As applications of this construction, we first show that supernilpotence is decidable for congruences of finite algebras in varieties that omit type 1. Secondly, we prove that the subpower membership problem for finite alge…
Following Bezhanishvili & Vosmaer, we confirm a conjecture of Yde Venema by piecing together results from various authors. Specifically, we show that if $\mathbb{A}$ is a residually finite, finitely generated modal algebra such that $\operatorname{HSP}(\mathbb{A})$ has equationally definable principal congruences, then the profinite completion of $\mathbb{A}$ is isomorphic to its MacNeille completion, and $\Diamond$ is smooth. Specific examples of such modal algebras are the free $\mathbf{K4}$-algebra and the free $\mathbf{PDL}$-algebra.
We prove completeness, interpolation, decidability and an omitting types theorem for certain multi dimensional modal logics where the states are not abstract entities but have an inner structure. The states will be sequences. Our approach is algebraic addressing (varieties generated by) complex algebras of Kripke semantics for such logic. Those algebras, whose elements are sets of states are common reducts of cylindric and polyadic algebras
Profinite algebras are exactly those that are isomorphic to inverse limits of finite algebras. Such algebras are naturally equipped with Boolean topologies. A variety $\mathcal V$ is standard if every Boolean topological algebra with the algebraic reduct in $\mathcal V$ is profinite. We show that there is no algorithm which takes as input a finite algebra $\mathbf A$ of a finite type and decide whether the variety ${\mathcal V}({\mathbf A})$ generated by ${\mathbf A}$ is standard. We also show the undecidability of some related properties. In particular, we solve a problem posed by Clark, Dave…
