Positive modal algebras are the positive-subreducts of modal algebras. We prove that the variety of positive S4-algebras is not locally finite. On the other hand, the free one-generated positive S4-algebra is shown to be finite. Moreover, we describe the bottom part of the lattice of varieties of positive S4-algebras. Building on this, we characterize (passively, hereditarily) structurally complete varieties of positive K4-algebras.
We study the following problem: Determine which almost structurally complete quasivarieties are structurally complete. We propose a general solution to this problem and then a solution in the semisimple case. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of structurally complete discriminator varieties. An interesting corollary in logic follows: Let $L$ be a consistent propositional logic/deductive system in the language with formulas for verum, which is a theorem, and falsum, which is not a theorem. Assume also that $L$ has an adequate semantics given by a discriminator variety. Then $L$ is …
We consider quantified pretransitive Horn modal logic. It is known that such logics are complete with respect to predicate Kripke frames with expanding domains. In this paper we prove that they are also complete with respect to neighbourhood frames with constant domains.
We study modal completeness and incompleteness of several sublogics of the interpretability logic $\mathbf{IL}$. We introduce the sublogic $\mathbf{IL}^-$, and prove that $\mathbf{IL}^-$ is sound and complete with respect to Veltman prestructures which are introduced by Visser. Moreover, we prove the modal completeness of twelve logics between $\mathbf{IL}^-$ and $\mathbf{IL}$ with respect to Veltman prestructures. On the other hand, we prove that eight natural sublogics of $\mathbf{IL}$ are modally incomplete. Finally, we prove that these incomplete logics are complete with respect to general…
We give a sufficient condition for Kripke completeness of modal logics enriched with the transitive closure modality. More precisely, we show that if a logic admits what we call definable filtration (ADF), then such an expansion of the logic is complete; in addition, has the finite model property, and again ADF. This argument can be iterated, and as an application we obtain the finite model property for PDL-like expansions of logics that ADF.
We study completeness in partial differential varieties. We generalize many results from ordinary differential fields to the partial differential setting. In particular, we establish a valuative criterion for differential completeness and use it to give a new class of examples of complete partial differential varieties. We use methods from both differential algebra and model theory.
This paper from 2008 is the first in a series of three related papers on modal methods in interpretability logics and applications. In this first paper the foundations are laid for later results. These foundations consist of a thorough treatment of a construction method to obtain modal models. This construction method is used to reprove some known results in the area of interpretability like the modal completeness of the logic ${\textbf{IL}}$. Next, the method is applied to obtain new results: the modal completeness of the logic ${\textbf{IL}}{\sf M_0}$, and modal completeness of ${\textbf{IL}…
We prove strong completeness results for some modal logics with the universal modality, with respect to their topological semantics over 0-dimensional dense-in-themselves metric spaces. We also use failure of compactness to show that, for some languages and spaces, no standard modal deductive system is strongly complete.
Ken Pledger devised a one-sorted approach to the incidence relation of plane geometries, using structures that also support models of propositional modal logic. He introduced a modal system 12g that is valid in one-sorted projective planes, proved that it has finitely many non-equivalent modalities, and identified all possible modality patterns of its extensions. One of these extensions 8f is valid in elliptic planes. These results were presented in his doctoral dissertation [14], which has been reprinted in the Australasian Journal of Logic, vol. 18, no. 4. https://doi.org/10.26686/ajl.v18i4.…
We prove a topological completeness theorem for the modal logic GLP containing operators $\langleλ\rangle$ for $λ\in$ Ord intended to capture progressively stronger notions of consistency in mathematical theories. We show that, given a scattered space $X$ of large-enough rank, any sentence $ϕ$ consistent with GLP can be satisfied in a polytopological space based on the finitely many Icard topologies over $X$ that correspond to the finitely many modalities appearing in $ϕ$.
In 1988, Ivlev proposed four-valued non-deterministic semantics for modal logics in which the alethic T axiom holds good. Unfortunately, no completeness was proved. In previous work, we proved completeness for some Ivlev systems and extended his hierarchy, proposing weaker six-valued systems in which the T axiom was replaced by the deontic D axiom. Here, we eliminate both axioms, proposing even weaker systems with eight values. Besides, we prove completeness for those new systems. It is natural to ask if a characterization by finite ordinary (deterministic) logical matrices would be possible f…
A deductive system is structurally complete if its admissible inference rules are derivable. For several important systems, like modal logic S5, failure of structural completeness is caused only by the underivability of passive rules, i.e. rules that can not be applied to theorems of the system. Neglecting passive rules leads to the notion of almost structural completeness, that means, derivablity of admissible non-passive rules. Almost structural completeness for quasivarieties and varieties of general algebras is investigated here by purely algebraic means. The results apply to all algebraiz…
There has been a significant interest in extending various modal logics with intersection, the most prominent examples being epistemic and doxastic logics with distributed knowledge. Completeness proofs for such logics tend to be complicated, in particular on model classes such as S5 like in standard epistemic logic, mainly due to the undefinability of intersection of modalities in standard modal logics. A standard proof method for the S5 case was outlined in [8] and later explicated in more detail in [13], using an "unraveling-folding method" case to achieve a treelike model to deal with the …
We investigate a recent proposal for modal hypersequent calculi. The interpretation of relational hypersequents incorporates an accessibility relation along the hypersequent. These systems give the same interpretation of hypersequents as Lellman's linear nested sequents, but were developed independently by Restall for S5 and extended to other normal modal logics by Parisi. The resulting systems obey Dosen's principle: the modal rules are the same across different modal logics. Different modal systems only differ in the presence or absence of external structural rules. With the exception of S5,…
We determine the modal logic of fixed-point models of truth and their axiomatizations by Solomon Feferman via Solovay-style completeness results. Given a fixed-point model $\mathcal{M}$, or an axiomatization $S$ thereof, we find a modal logic $M$ such that a modal sentence $φ$ is a theorem of $M$ if and only if the sentence $φ^*$ obtained by translating the modal operator with the truth predicate is true in $\mathcal{M}$ or a theorem of $S$ under all such translations. To this end, we introduce a novel version of possible worlds semantics featuring both classical and nonclassical worlds and es…
We study (strictly) join irreducible varieties in the lattice of subvarieties of residuated lattices. We explore the connections with well-connected algebras and suitable generalizations, focusing in particular on representable varieties. Moreover we find weakened notions of Hallden completeness that characterize join irreducibility. We characterize strictly join irreducible varieties of basic hoops, and use the generalized rotation construction to find strictly join irreducible varieties in subvarieties of MTL-algebras. We also obtain some general results about linear varieties of residuated …
The aim of this paper is to show that even if the natural algebraic semantic for modal (normal) logic is modal algebra, the more general class of subordination algebras (roughly speaking, the non symmetric contact algebras) is adequate too - so leading to completeness results. This motivates for an algebraic (in the sense of universal algebra) study of those relational structures that are subordinate algebras.
We prove completeness, interpolation, decidability and an omitting types theorem for certain multi dimensional modal logics where the states are not abstract entities but have an inner structure. The states will be sequences. Our approach is algebraic addressing (varieties generated by) complex algebras of Kripke semantics for such logic. Those algebras, whose elements are sets of states are common reducts of cylindric and polyadic algebras

We consider the Gödel bi-modal logic determined by fuzzy Kripke models where both the propositions and the accessibility relation are infinitely valued over the standard Gödel algebra [0,1] and prove strong completeness of Fischer Servi intuitionistic modal logic IK plus the prelinearity axiom with respect to this semantics. We axiomatize also the bi-modal analogues of $T,$ $S4,$ and $S5$ obtained by restricting to models over frames satisfying the [0,1]-valued versions of the structural properties which characterize these logics. As application of the completeness theorems we obtain a represe…
Differential algebraic geometry seeks to extend the results of its algebraic counterpart to objects defined by differential equations. Many notions, such as that of a projective algebraic variety, have close differential analogues but their behavior can vary in interesting ways. Workers in both differential algebra and model theory have investigated the property of completeness of differential varieties. After reviewing their results, we extend that work by proving several versions of a "differential valuative criterion" and using them to give new examples of complete differential varieties. W…
We study the finitary version of the coalgebraic logic introduced by L. Moss. The syntax of this logic, which is introduced uniformly with respect to a coalgebraic type functor, required to preserve weak pullbacks, extends that of classical propositional logic with a so-called coalgebraic cover modality depending on the type functor. Its semantics is defined in terms of a categorically defined relation lifting operation. As the main contributions of our paper we introduce a derivation system, and prove that it provides a sound and complete axiomatization for the collection of coalgebraically v…

In 1933, Gödel considered two modal approaches to describing provability. One captured formal provability and resulted in the logic GL and Solovay's Completeness Theorem. The other was based on the modal logic S4 and led to Artemov's Logic of Proofs LP. In this paper, we study introduced by the author logic GLA, which is a fusion of GL and LP in the union of their languages. GLA is supplied with a Kripke-style semantics and the corresponding completeness theorem. Soundness and completeness of GLA with respect to the arithmetical provability semantics is established.
MV-algebras were introduced by Chang to prove the completeness of the infinite-valued Lukasiewicz propositional calculus. In this paper we give a categorical equivalence between the varieties of (n+1)-valued MV-algebras and the classes of Boolean algebras endowed with a certain family of filters. Another similar categorical equivalence is given by A. Di Nola and A. Lettieri. Also, we point out the relations between this categorical equivalence and the duality established by R. Cignoli, which can be derived from results obtained by P. Niederkorn on natural dualities for varieties of MV-algebras…

A variety is said to be coherent if the finitely generated subalgebras of its finitely presented members are also finitely presented. In a recent paper by the authors it was shown that coherence forms a key ingredient of the uniform deductive interpolation property for equational consequence in a variety, and a general criterion was given for the failure of coherence (and hence uniform deductive interpolation) in varieties of algebras with a term-definable semilattice reduct. In this paper, a more general criterion is obtained and used to prove the failure of coherence and uniform deductive in…
In this paper, we give an algebraic completeness theorem for constructive logic with strong negation in terms of finite rough set-based Nelson algebras determined by quasiorders. We show how for a quasiorder $R$, its rough set-based Nelson algebra can be obtained by applying the well-known construction by Sendlewski. We prove that if the set of all $R$-closed elements, which may be viewed as the set of completely defined objects, is cofinal, then the rough set-based Nelson algebra determined by a quasiorder forms an effective lattice, that is, an algebraic model of the logic $E_0$, which is ch…
