We give a characterisation of factoriality of the groupoid von Neumann algebra $L(\mathcal{G})$ associated to a discrete measured groupoid $(\mathcal{G},μ)$. We introduce the notion of groupoids with `infinite conjugacy classes' and show that this property together with ergodicity of the groupoid is equivalent to factoriality of $L(\mathcal{G})$.
The $q$-deformed Araki-Woods von Neumann algebras $Γ_q(\mathcal{H}_\mathbb{R}, U_t)^{\prime \prime}$ are factors for all $q\in (-1,1)$ whenever $dim(\mathcal{H}_\mathbb{R})\geq 3$. When $dim(\mathcal{H}_\mathbb{R})=2$ they are factors as well for all $q$ so long as the parameter defining $(U_t)$ is `small' or $1$ $($trivial$)$ as the case may be.
We investigate factoriality, Connes' type ${\rm III}$ invariants and fullness of arbitrary amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras using Popa's deformation/rigidity theory. Among other things, we generalize many previous structural results on amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras and we obtain new examples of full amalgamated free product factors for which we can explicitely compute Connes' type ${\rm III}$ invariants.
To any strongly continuous orthogonal representation of $\R$ on a real Hilbert space $\CH_\R$, Hiai constructed $q$-deformed Araki-Woods von Neumann algebras for $-1< q< 1$, which are $W^{\ast}$-algebras arising from non tracial representations of the $q$-commutation relations, the latter yielding an interpolation between the Bosonic and Fermionic statistics. We prove that if the orthogonal representation is not ergodic then these von Neumann algebras are factors whenever $dim(\CH_\R)\geq 2$ and $q\in (-1,1)$. In such case, the centralizer of the $q$-quasi free state has trivial relative commu…
This revised version corrects some substancial errors in the proofs. The old proofs were only valid for (finite dimensional) * (finite dimensional). The scope of the results remains the same, however for type I_\infty algebras, the results of the original version were incorrect.
We study the von Neumann algebra generated by q--deformed Gaussian elements l_i+l_i^* where operators l_i fulfill the q--deformed canonical commutation relations l_i l_j^*-q l_j^* l_i=delta_{ij} for -1<q<1. We show that if the number of generators is finite, greater than some constant depending on q, it is a II_1 factor which does not have the property Gamma. Our technique can be used for proving factoriality of many examples of von Neumann algebras arising from some generalized Brownian motions, both for type II_1 and type III case.
Let $\Fth$ be a single vertex \textsf{k}-graph, and $π_ω(Ø_θ)"$ be the von Neumann algebra induced from the GNS representation of a distinguished state $ω$ of its $\textsf{k}$-graph C*-algebra $Ø_θ$. In this paper, we prove the factoriality of $π_ω(Ø_θ)"$ and further determine its type, when either $\Fth$ has the little pull-back property, or the intrinsic group of $\Fth$ has rank $0$. The key step to achieve this is to show that the fixed point algebra of the modular action corresponding to $ω$ has a unique tracial state.
The Hecke algebra $\mathbb{C}_q[W]$ of a Coxter group $W$, associated to parameter $q$, can be completed to a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{N}_q(W)$. We study such algebras in case where $W$ is right-angled. We determine the range of $q$ for which $\mathcal{N}_q(W)$ is a factor, i.e. has trivial center. Moreover, in case of nontrivial center, we prove a result allowing to decompose $\mathcal{N}_q(W)$ into a finite direct sum of factors.
Several techniques together with some partial answers are given to the questions of factoriality, type classification and fullness for amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras.
We study the C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras associated with the universal discrete quantum groups. They give rise to full prime factors and simple exact C*-algebras. The main tool in our work is the study of an amenable boundary action, yielding the Akemann-Ostrand property. Finally, this boundary can be identified with the Martin or the Poisson boundary of a quantum random walk.
Reduced HNN extensions of von Neumann algebras (as well as $C^*$-algebras) will be introduced, and their modular theory, factoriality and ultraproducts will be discussed. In several concrete settings, detailed analysis on them will be also carried out.
In this work we give a generalization of matched pairs of (finite) groups to describe a general class of depth two inclusions of factor von Neumann algebras and the C*-quantum groupoids associated with, using double groupoids.
We consider an inclusion $B\subseteq M$ of finite von Neumann algebras satisfying $B'\cap M\subseteq B$. A partial isometry $v\in M$ is called a groupoid normalizer if $vBv^*, v^*Bv\subseteq B$. Given two such inclusions $B_i\subseteq M_i$, $i=1,2$, we find approximations to the groupoid normalizers of $B_1 \vnotimes B_2$ in $M_1\vnotimes M_2$, from which we deduce that the von Neumann algebra generated by the groupoid normalizers of the tensor product is equal to the tensor product of the von Neumann algebras generated by the groupoid normalizers. Examples are given to show that this can fail…
For an arbitrary discrete probability-measure-preserving groupoid $G$, we provide a characterization of property (T) for $G$ in terms of the groupoid von Neumann algebra $L(G)$. More generally, we obtain a characterization of relative property (T) for a subgroupoid $H\subset G$ in terms of the inclusion $L\left( H\right) \subset L\left( G\right) $.
Mimicking the von Neumann version of Kustermans and Vaes' locally compact quantum groups, Franck Lesieur had introduced a notion of measured quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras. In a former article, the author had introduced the notion of actions, crossed-product, dual actions of a measured quantum groupoid: a biduality theorem for actions had been proved. This article continues that program : we prove the existence of a standard implementation for an action, and a bidulaity theorem for weights. We generalize this way results which were proved, for locally compact quantum …
Mimicking the von Neumann version of Kustermans and Vaes' locally compact quantum groups, Franck Lesieur had introduced a notion of measured quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras. In this article, we suppose that the basis of the measured quantum groupoid is central; in that case, we prove that a specific sub-${\bf C}^*$ algebra is invariant under all the data of the measured quantum groupoid; moreover, this sub-${\bf C}^*$-algebra is a continuous field of ${\bf C}^*$-algebras; when the basis is central in both the measured quantum groupoid and its dual, we get that the meas…
The groupoid normalisers of a unital inclusion $B\subseteq M$ of von Neumann algebras consist of the set $\mathcal{GN}_M(B)$ of partial isometries $v\in M$ with $vBv^*\subseteq B$ and $v^*Bv\subseteq B$. Given two unital inclusions $B_i\subseteq M_i$ of von Neumann algebras, we examine groupoid normalisers for the tensor product inclusion $B_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ B_2\subseteq M_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ M_2$ establishing the formula $$ \mathcal{GN}_{M_1\,\overline{\otimes}\,M_2}(B_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ B_2)''=\mathcal{GN}_{M_1}(B_1)''\ \overline{\otimes}\ \mathcal{GN}_{M_2}(B_2)'' $$ when one i…
In the setting of von Neumann algebras, measurable quantum groupoids have successfully been axiomatized and studied by Enock, Vallin, and Lesieur, whereas in the setting of $C^{*}$-algebras, a similar theory of locally compact quantum groupoids could not yet be developed. Some basic building blocks for such a theory, like analogues of a Hopf-von Neumann bimodule and of a pseudo-multiplicative unitary, were introduced in the thesis and a recent article by the author. That approach, however, is restricted to decomposable quantum groupoids which generalize $r$-discrete groupoids. Recently, we dev…
We consider crossed product von Neumann algebras arising from free Bogoljubov actions of the integers. We describe several presentations of them as amalgamated free products and cocycle crossed products and give a criterion for factoriality. A number of isomorphism results for free Bogoljubov crossed products are proved, focusing on those arising from almost periodic representations. We complement our isomorphism results by rigidity results yielding non-isomorphic free Bogoljubov crossed products and by a partial characterisation of strong solidity of a free Bogoljubov crossed products in term…
In a former article, in collaboration with Jean-Michel Vallin, we have constructed two "quantum groupo\"ıds" dual to each other, from a depth 2 inclusion of von Neumann algebras $M_0\subset M_1$, in such a way that the canonical Jones'tower associated to the inclusion can be described as a tower of successive crossed-products by these two structures. We are now investigating in greater details these structures in the presence of an appropriate modular theory on the basis $M'_0\cap M_1$, and we show how these examples fit with Lesieur's "measured quantum groupo\"ıds".
With a minor change made in the previous construction we observe that any reduced HNN extension is precisely a compressed algebra of a certain reduced amalgamated free product in both the von Neumann algebra and the $C^*$-algebra settings. It is also pointed out that the same fact holds true even for universal HNN extensions of C$^*$-algebras. We apply the observation to the questions of factoriality and type classification of HNN extensions of von Neumann algebras and also those of simplicity and $K$-theory of (reduced or universal) HNN extensions of $C^*$-algebras.
The automorphism group $Aut(X,μ)$ of a compact, complete metric space $X$ with a Radon measure $μ$ is a subgroup of $\mathcal{U}(L^2(X,μ))$-the unitary group of operators on $L^2(X,μ)$. The $Aut(X,μ)$-action on the generalized space $\mathcal{M}(X)$ is a proper action. Hence, there exists a slice at each point of the generalized space $\mathcal{M}(X)$. Measure Groupoid (virtual group) is subsequently employed to analyze the resulting dynamical system as that of the ergodic action of the commutative algebra (a lattice) $C(X)$ on the generalized space $\mathcal{M}(X)$ which is represented on a c…
The paper contains a description of the KMS weights for the one-parameter action on the reduced C*-algebra of a second countable locally compact Hausdorff etale groupoid, arising from a continuous real valued homomorphism satisfying two conditions. The results are subsequently applied to identify the KMS weights for the gauge action on a simple graph algebra. The von Neumann algebra generated by the GNS-representation of an extremal KMS weight is a factor, and tools are developed to determine its type. The paper concludes with three examples to illustrate the results.
In two articles ([L2], [L3]), Franck Lesieur had introduced a notion of quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras, using intensively the notion of pseudo-multiplicative unitary, which had been introduced in a previous article of the author, in collaboration with Jean-Michel Vallin [EV]. We are here studying the analog of Lesieur's construction in a C*-framework, when the basis of the quantum groupoid is central; in this case, the C* structure obtained can be described using the tools of continuous fields of C*-algebras. This allows us to re-use as quantum groupoids some examples…
We analyse certain Haar systems associated to groupoids obtained by certain natural equivalence relations of dynamical nature on sets like $\{1,2,...,d\}^\mathbb{Z}$, $\{1,2,...,d\}^\mathbb{N}$, $S^1\times S^1$, or $(S^1)^\mathbb{N}$, where $S^1$ is the unitary circle. We also describe properties of transverse functions, quasi-invariant probabilities and KMS states for some examples of von Neumann algebras (and also $C^*$-Algebras) associated to these groupoids. We relate some of these KMS states with Gibbs states of Thermodynamic Formalism. While presenting new results, we will also describe …
Dynamical quantum groups were introduced by Etingof and Varchenko in connection with the dynamical quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and measured quantum groupoids were introduced by Enock, Lesieur and Vallin in their study of inclusions of type II_1 factors. In this article, we associate to suitable dynamical quantum groups, which are a purely algebraic objects, Hopf C*-bimodules and measured quantum groupoids on the level of von Neumann algebras. Assuming invariant integrals on the dynamical quantum group, we first construct a fundamental unitary which yields Hopf bimodules on the level of C*-al…
In this paper we define $L^{2}$-homology and $L^{2}$-Betti numbers for tracial *-algebras $A$ with respect to a von Neumann subalgebra $B$. When $B$ is reduced to the field of complex numbers we recover the $L^{2}$-Betti numbers of $A$ as defined by A. Connes and D. Shlyakhtenko, but we will show that taking into account the role of the von Neumann subalgebra yields to a number of advantages like, for instance, a much better behavior with respect to compression and directed sums. Our main result is that $L^{2}$-homology and $L^{2}$-Betti numbers of discrete measured groupoids and equivalence r…
It is well known that a measured groupoid G defines a von Neumann algebra W*(G), and that a Lie groupoid G canonically defines both a C*-algebra C*(G) and a Poisson manifold A*(G). We show that the maps G -> W*(G), G -> C*(G) and G -> A*(G) are functorial with respect to suitable categories. In these categories Morita equivalence is isomorphism of objects, so that these maps preserve Morita equivalence.
We introduced a family of infinite graphs directly associated with a class of von Neumann automaton model A_{G}. These are finite state models used in symbolic dynamics: stimuli models and in control theory. In the context of groupoid von Neumann algebras, and an associated fractal group, we prove a classification theorem for representations of automata.
We prove that the regular von Neumann subalgebras $B$ of the hyperfinite II_1 factor $R$ satisfying the condition $B'\cap R=Z(B)$ are completely classified (up to conjugacy by an automorphism of $R$) by the associated discrete measured groupoid $G$. We obtain a similar classification result for triple inclusions $A\subset B \subset R$, where $A$ is a Cartan subalgebra in $R$ and the intermediate von Neumann algebra $B$ is regular in $R$. A key step in proving these results is to show the vanishing cohomology for the associated cocycle actions of $G$ on $B$. We in fact prove two very general va…
A fundamental feature of quantum groups is that many come in pairs of mutually dual objects, like finite-dimensional Hopf algebras and their duals, or quantisations of function algebras and of universal enveloping algebras of Poisson-Lie groups. The same phenomenon was studied for quantum groupoids in various settings. In the purely algebraic setup, the construction of a dual object was given by Schauenburg and by Kadison and Szlachányi, but required the quantum groupoid to be finite with respect to the base. A sophisticated duality for measured quantum groupoids was developed by Enock, Lesieu…
In this article, we realize ultragraph Leavitt path algebras as Steinberg algebras. This realization allows us to use the groupoid approach to obtain structural results about these algebras. Using skew product groupoid, we show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras are graded von Neumann regular rings. We characterize strongly graded ultragraph Leavitt path algebras and show that every ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is semiprimitive. Moreover, we characterize irreducible representations of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras. We also show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras can be realized as …
We introduce C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and concrete Hopf C*-bimodules for the study of quantum groupoids in the setting of C*-algebras. These unitaries and Hopf C*-bimodules generalize multiplicative unitaries and Hopf C*-algebras and are analogues of the pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and Hopf--von Neumann-bimod-ules studied by Enock, Lesieur and Vallin. To each C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitary, we associate two Fourier algebras with a duality pairing, a C*-tensor category of representations, and in the regular case two reduced and two universal Hopf C*-bimodules. The theory is illu…
It is well known that rings are the objects of a bicategory, whose arrows are bimodules, composed through the bimodule tensor product. We give an analogous bicategorical description of C*-algebras, von Neumann algebras, Lie groupoids, symplectic groupoids, and Poisson manifolds. The upshot is that known definitions of Morita equivalence for any of these cases amount to isomorphism of objects in the pertinent bicategory.
