In this paper a higher-order mixed finite element method for elastoplasticity with linear kinematic hardening is analyzed. Thereby, the non-differentiability of the involved plasticity functional is resolved by a Lagrange multiplier leading to a three field formulation. The finite element discretization is conforming in the displacement field and the plastic strain but potentially non-conforming in the Lagrange multiplier as its Frobenius norm is only constrained in a certain set of Gauss quadrature points. A discrete inf-sup condition with constant 1 and the well posedness of the discrete mixed problem are shown. Moreover, convergence and guaranteed convergence rates are proved with respect to the mesh size and the polynomial degree, which are optimal for the lowest order case. Numerical experiments underline the theoretical results.
In this paper, we introduce new stable mixed finite elements of any order on polytopal mesh for solving second order elliptic problem. We establish optimal order error estimates for velocity and super convergence for pressure. Numerical experiments are conducted for our mixed elements of different orders on 2D and 3D spaces that confirm the theory.

For a generalized Hodge Laplace equation, we prove the quasi-optimal convergence rate of an adaptive mixed finite element method. This adaptive method can control the error in the natural mixed variational norm when the space of harmonic forms is trivial. In particular, we obtain new quasi-optimal adaptive mixed methods for the Hodge Laplace, Poisson, and Stokes equations. Comparing to existing adaptive mixed methods, the new methods control errors in both variables.
Mixed finite element methods are considered for a ferrofluid flow model with magnetization paralleled to the magnetic field. The ferrofluid model is a coupled system of the Maxwell equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. By skillfully introducing some new variables, the model is rewritten as several decoupled subsystems that can be solved independently. Mixed finite element formulations are given to discretize the decoupled systems with proper finite element spaces. Existence and uniqueness of the mixed finite element solutions are shown, and optimal order error estimates are…
This work proposes a mixed finite element method for the Biot poroelasticity equations that employs the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas finite element space for the solid displacement and piecewise constants for the fluid pressure. The method is based on the formulation of linearized elasticity as a weighted vector Laplace problem. By introducing the solid rotation and fluid flux as auxiliary variables, we form a four-field formulation of the Biot system, which is discretized using conforming mixed finite element spaces. The auxiliary variables are subsequently removed from the system in a local h…

We consider mixed finite element approximations of viscous, plastic Bingham flow in a cylindrical pipe. A novel a priori and a posteriori error analysis is introduced which is based on a discrete mesh dependent norm for the normalized Lagrange multiplier. This allows proving stability for various conforming finite elements. Numerical examples are presented to support the theory and to demonstrate adaptive mesh refinement.
Semi-discrete and fully discrete mixed finite element methods are considered for Maxwell-model-based problems of wave propagation in linear viscoelastic solid. This mixed finite element framework allows the use of a large class of existing mixed conforming finite elements for elasticity in the spatial discretization. In the fully discrete scheme, a Crank-Nicolson scheme is adopted for the approximation of the temporal derivatives of stress and velocity variables. Error estimates of the semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes, as well as an unconditional stability result for the fully discrete…
We propose a mixed finite element method for Stokes flow with one degree of freedom per element and facet of simplicial grids. The method is derived by considering the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation and eliminating the vorticity locally through the use of a quadrature rule. The discrete solution is pointwise divergence-free and the method is pressure robust. The theoretically derived convergence rates are confirmed by numerical experiments.
In this paper, we present a study on the effect of penalty term in the mixed Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method for the biharmonic equation proposed by \cite{gudi2008mixed}. The proposed mixed Discontinuous Galerkin Method showed sub-optimal rates of convergence for piecewise quadratic elements and no significant convergence rates for piecewise linear elements. We show that by choosing the penalty term proportional to $|e_k|^{-1}$ instead of $|e_k|^{-3}$, ensures an optimal rate of convergence for the approximation, including for piecewise linear elements. Finally, we present numeric…
In this paper, we propose an extended mixed finite element method for elliptic interface problems. By adding some stabilization terms, we present a mixed approximation form based on Brezzi-Douglas-Marini element space and the piecewise constant function space, and show that the discrete inf-sup constant is independent of how the interface intersects the triangulation. Furthermore, we derive that the optimal convergence holds independent of the location of the interface relative to the mesh. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to verify our theoretical results.
We consider a mixed hybrid finite element formulation for coupled poromechanics. A stabilization strategy based on a macro-element approach is advanced to eliminate the spurious pressure modes appearing in undrained/incompressible conditions. The efficient solution of the stabilized mixed hybrid block system is addressed by developing a class of block triangular preconditioners based on a Schur-complement approximation strategy. Robustness, computational efficiency and scalability of the proposed approach are theoretically discussed and tested using challenging benchmark problems on massively …
A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
We consider mixed finite element methods with exact symmetric stress tensors. We derive a new quasi-optimal a priori error estimate uniformly valid with respect to the compressibility. For the a posteriori error analysis we consider the Prager-Synge hypercircle principle and introduce a new estimate uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. All estimates are validated by numerical examples.
We study a non standard mixed formulation of the Poisson problem, sometimes known as dual mixed formulation. For reasons related to the equilibration of the flux, we use finite elements that are conforming in H(div) for the approximation of the gradients, even if the formulation would allow for discontinuous finite elements. The scheme is not uniformly inf-sup stable, but we can show existence and uniqueness of the solution, as well as optimal error estimates for the gradient variable when suitable regularity assumptions are made. Several additional remarks complete the paper, shedding some li…
This paper presents a lowest-order immersed Raviart-Thomas mixed triangular finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems on unfitted meshes independent of the interface. In order to achieve the optimal convergence rates on unfitted meshes, an immersed finite element finite (IFE) is constructed by modifying the traditional Raviart-Thomas element. Some important properties are derived including the unisolvence of IFE basis functions, the optimal approximation capabilities of the IFE space and the corresponding commuting digram. Optimal error estimates are rigorously proved for t…
We consider mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity where the symmetry of the stress tensor is weakly enforced. Both an a priori and a posteriori error analysis are given for several known families of methods that are uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. A posteriori estimates are derived for both the compressible and incompressible cases. The results are verified by numerical examples.
For the planar Navier--Lamé equation in mixed form with symmetric stress tensors, we prove the uniform quasi-optimal convergence of an adaptive method based on the hybridized mixed finite element proposed in [Gong, Wu, and Xu: Numer.~Math., 141 (2019), pp.~569--604]. The main ingredients in the analysis consist of a discrete a posteriori upper bound and a quasi-orthogonality result for the stress field under the mixed boundary condition. Compared with existing adaptive methods, the proposed adaptive algorithm could be directly applied to the traction boundary condition and be easily implemente…

In this paper, we propose a new numerical scheme for the coupled Stokes-Darcy model with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition. We use the weak Galerkin method to discretize the Stokes equation and the mixed finite element method to the Darcy equation. A discrete inf-sup condition is proved and optimal error estimates are also derived. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical analysis.

We propose a new three-dimensional formulation based on the mixed Tangential-Displacement Normal-Normal-Stress (TDNNS) method for elasticity. In elastic TDNNS elements, the tangential component of the displacement field and the normal component of the stress vector are degrees of freedom and continuous across inter-element interfaces. TDNNS finite elements have been shown to be locking-free with respect to shear locking in thin elements, which makes them suitable for the discretization of laminates or macro-fibre composites. In the current paper, we extend the formulation to piezoelectric mate…
In this paper we study the approximation of eigenvalues arising from the mixed Hellinger--Reissner elasticity problem by using the simple finite element using partial relaxation of $C^0$ vertex continuity of stresses introduced recently by Jun Hu and Rui Ma. We prove that the method converge when a residual type error estimator is considered and that the estimator decays optimally with respect to the number of degrees of freedom.
In this paper, an improved superconvergence analysis is presented for both the Crouzeix-Raviart element and the Morley element. The main idea of the analysis is to employ a discrete Helmholtz decomposition of the difference between the canonical interpolation and the finite element solution for the first order mixed Raviart--Thomas element and the mixed Hellan--Herrmann--Johnson element, respectively. This, in particular, allows for proving a full one order superconvergence result for these two mixed finite elements. Finally, a full one order superconvergence result of both the Crouzeix-Raviar…
We present a mixed finite element method for a five-field formulation of the Biot system of poroelasticity that reduces to a cell-centered pressure-displacement system on simplicial and quadrilateral grids. A mixed stress-displacement-rotation formulation for elasticity with weak stress symmetry is coupled with a mixed velocity-pressure Darcy formulation. The spatial discretization is based on combining the multipoint stress mixed finite element (MSMFE) method for elasticity and the multipoint flux mixed finite element (MFMFE) method for Darcy flow. It uses the lowest order Brezzi-Douglas-Mari…

We apply high-order mixed finite element discretization techniques and their associated preconditioned iterative solvers to the Variable Eddington Factor (VEF) equations in two spatial dimensions. The mixed finite element VEF discretizations are coupled to a high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of the Discrete Ordinates transport equation to form effective linear transport algorithms that are compatible with high-order (curved) meshes. This combination of VEF and transport discretizations is motivated by the use of high-order mixed finite element methods in hydrodynamics calcu…
This paper is concerned with fully discrete mixed finite element approximations of the time-dependent stochastic Stokes equations with multiplicative noise. A prototypical method, which comprises of the Euler-Maruyama scheme for time discretization and the Taylor-Hood mixed element for spatial discretization is studied in detail. Strong convergence with rates is established not only for the velocity approximation but also for the pressure approximation (in a time-averaged fashion). A stochastic inf-sup condition is established and used in a nonstandard way to obtain the error estimate for the …
We construct new families of direct serendipity and direct mixed finite elements on general planer convex polygons that are $H^1$ and $H(div)$ conforming, respectively, and possess optimal order of accuracy for any order. They have a minimal number of degrees of freedom subject to the conformity and accuracy constraints. The name arises because the shape functions are defined directly on the physical elements, i.e., without using a mapping from a reference element. The finite element shape functions are defined to be the full spaces of scalar or vector polynomials plus a space of supplemental …

Wormhole propagation plays a very important role in the product enhancement of oil and gas reservoir. A new combined hybrid mixed finite element method is proposed to solve incompressible wormhole propagation problem with discontinuous Galerkin finite element procedure, in which, the new hybrid mixed finite element algorithm is established for pressure equation, while the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is considered for concentration equation, and then the porosity function is computed straightly by the approximate value of the concentration. This new combined method can keep loc…
A hydrogeological model for the spread of pollution in an aquifer is considered. The model consists in a convection-diffusion-reaction equation involving the dispersion tensor which depends nonlinearly of the fluid velocity. We introduce an explicit flux in the model and use a mixed Finite Element Method for the discretization. We provide existence, uniqueness and stability results for the discrete model. A convergence result is obtained for the semi-discretized in time problem and for the fully discretization.
In this paper, we develop two finite element formulations for the Laplace problem and find the way in which they are equivalent. Then we compare the solutions obtained by both formulations, by changing the order of the shape functions and the refinement level of the mesh (star with rhomboidal elements). And, we will give an overview of MFEM library from the LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory), as it is the library used to obtain the solutions.
A family of conforming mixed finite elements with mass lumping on triangular grids are presented for linear elasticity. The stress field is approximated by symmetric $H({\rm div})-P_k (k\geq 3)$ polynomial tensors enriched with higher order bubbles so as to allow mass lumping, which can be viewed as the Hu-Zhang elements enriched with higher order interior bubble functions. The displacement field is approximated by $C^{-1}-P_{k-1}$ polynomial vectors enriched with higher order terms to ensure the stability condition. For both the proposed mixed elements and their mass lumping schemes, optimal …
