We propose a new formula for computing holographic Renyi entropies in the presence of multiple extremal surfaces. Our proposal is based on computing the wave function in the basis of fixed-area states and assuming a diagonal approximation for the Renyi entropy. For Renyi index $n\geq1$, our proposal agrees with the existing cosmic brane proposal for holographic Renyi entropy. For $n<1$, however, our proposal predicts a new phase with leading order (in Newton's constant $G$) corrections to the cosmic brane proposal, even far from entanglement phase transitions and when bulk quantum corrections are unimportant. Recast in terms of optimization over fixed-area states, the difference between the two proposals can be understood to come from the order of optimization: for $n<1$, the cosmic brane proposal is a minimax prescription whereas our proposal is a maximin prescription. We demonstrate the presence of such leading order corrections using illustrative examples. In particular, our proposal reproduces existing results in the literature for the PSSY model and high-energy eigenstates, providing a universal explanation for previously found leading order corrections to the $n<1$ Renyi entropies.
We show that Renyi entropies of subregions can be used to distinguish when the entire system is in a microcanonical ensemble from when it is in a canonical ensemble, at least in theories holographically dual to gravity. Simple expressions are provided for these Renyi entropies in a particular thermodynamic limit with high energy density and fixed fractional size of the subregion. Holographically, the Renyi entropies are determined by the areas of cosmic branes inserted into the bulk spacetime. They differ between a microcanonical and a canonical ensemble because the two ensembles provide diffe…
We develop a framework for studying the well-known universal term in the Renyi entropy for an arbitrary entangling region in four-dimensional conformal field theories that are holographically dual to gravitational theories. The shape dependence of the Renyi entropy $S_n$ is described by two coefficients: $f_b(n)$ for traceless extrinsic curvature deformations and $f_c(n)$ for Weyl tensor deformations. We provide the first calculation of the coefficient $f_b(n)$ in interacting theories by relating it to the stress tensor one-point function in a deformed hyperboloid background. The latter is the…
We study Renyi entropies $S_n$ in quantum error correcting codes and compare the answer to the cosmic brane prescription for computing $\widetilde{S}_n \equiv n^2 \partial_n (\frac{n-1}{n} S_n)$. We find that general operator algebra codes have a similar, more general prescription. Notably, for the AdS/CFT code to match the specific cosmic brane prescription, the code must have maximal entanglement within eigenspaces of the area operator. This gives us an improved definition of the area operator, and establishes a stronger connection between the Ryu-Takayanagi area term and the edge modes in l…
Motivated by extended black hole thermodynamics, we generalize the Rényi entropy of charged holographic conformal field theories (CFTs) in $d$-dimensions. Specifically, following (1807.09215), we extend the quench description of the Rényi entropy of globally charged holographic CFTs by including pressure variations of charged hyperbolically sliced anti de Sitter black holes. We provide an exhaustive analysis of the new type of charged Rényi entropy, where we find an interesting interplay between a parameter controlling the pressure of the black hole and its charge. A field theoretic interpreta…
In this paper we apply the discrete gravity and Regge calculus to tensor networks and Anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. We construct the boundary many-body quantum state $|Ψ\rangle$ using random tensor networks as the holographic mapping, applied to the Wheeler-deWitt wave function of bulk Euclidean discrete gravity in 3 dimensions. The entanglement Rényi entropy of $|Ψ\rangle$ is shown to holographically relate to the on-shell action of Einstein gravity on a branch cover bulk manifold. The resulting Rényi entropy $S_n$ of $|Ψ\rangle$ approximates with high precis…
Charged Renyi entropies were recently introduced as a measure of entanglement between different charge sectors of a theory. We investigate the phase structure of charged Renyi entropies for CFTs with a light, charged scalar operator. The charged Renyi entropies are calculated holographically via areas of charged hyperbolic black holes. These black holes can become unstable to the formation of scalar hair at sufficiently low temperature; this is the holographic superconducting instability in hyperbolic space. This implies that the Renyi entropies can be non-analytic in the Renyi parameter n. We…
We consider Renyi entropies of conformal field theories in flat space, with the entangling surface being a sphere. The AdS/CFT correspondence relates this Renyi entropy to that of a black hole with hyperbolic horizon; as the Renyi parameter $n$ increases the temperature of the black hole decreases. If the CFT possesses a sufficiently low dimension scalar operator the black hole will be unstable to the development of hair. Thus, as $n$ is varied, the Renyi entropies will exhibit a phase transition at a critical value of $n$. The location of the phase transition, along with the spectrum of the r…
Ryu and Takayanagi conjectured a formula for the entanglement (von Neumann) entropy of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory. The von Neumann entropy is a special case of a more general class of entropies called Renyi entropies. Using Euclidean gravity, Fursaev computed the entanglement Renyi entropies (EREs) of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory, and thereby derived the RT formula. We point out, however, that his EREs are incorrect, since his putative saddle points do not in fact solve the Einstein equation. We remedy this situa…
In this paper we investigate the holographic Rényi entropy in $\mathcal N=1$ supergravity (SUGRA) in AdS$_3$ spacetime, which is dual to the two-dimensional $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ superconformal field theory (SCFT). We consider both cases of two short intervals on a line with zero temperature and one interval on a circle with low temperature. In SUGRA side we consider contributions of both graviton and gravitino, and in SCFT side we consider contributions of both stress tensor $T$, $\bar T$ and their superpartners $G$, $\bar G$. We find matches between SUGRA and SCFT results.
The entanglement and Rényi entropies for spherical entangling surfaces in CFTs with gravity duals can be explicitly calculated by mapping these entropies first to the thermal entropy on hyperbolic space and then, using the AdS/CFT correspondence, to the Wald entropy of topological black holes. Here we extend this idea by taking into account corrections to the Wald entropy. Using the method based on horizon symmetries and the asymptotic Cardy formula, we calculate corrections to the Wald entropy and find that these corrections are proportional to the logarithm of horizon area. With the correcte…
The relative entropy is a measure of the distinguishability of two quantum states. A great deal of progress has been made in the study of the relative entropy between an excited state and the vacuum state of a conformal field theory (CFT) reduced to a spherical region. For example, when the excited state is a small perturbation of the vacuum state, the relative entropy is known to have a universal expression for \textit{all} CFT's \cite{Faulk-GR-entanglement}. Specifically, the perturbative relative entropy can be written as the symplectic flux of a certain scalar field in an \textit{auxiliary…
In this paper we investigate the holographic Rényi entropy of two disjoint intervals on complex plane with small cross ratio $x$ for conformal field theory with $W$ symmetry in the ground state, which could be dual to a higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity. We focus on the cases of $W_3$ and $W_4$ symmetries. In order to see the nontrivial contributions from the $W$ fields, we calculate the Rényi entropy in the expansion of $x$ to order $x^8$ in both the gravity and the CFT sides. In the gravity side the classical contributions to the entanglement entropy is still given by the Ryu-Takayanagi area formu…
We compute the supersymmetric Renyi entropy across an entangling three-sphere for five-dimensional superconformal field theories using localization. For a class of USp(2N) gauge theories we construct a holographic dual 1/2 BPS black hole solution of Euclidean Romans F(4) supergravity. The large N limit of the gauge theory results agree perfectly with the supergravity computations.
We consider higher derivative gravity and obtain universal relations for the shape coefficients $(f_a, f_b, f_c)$ of the shape dependent universal part of the Rényi entropy for four dimensional CFTs in terms of the parameters $(c, t_2, t_4)$ of two-point and three-point functions of stress tensors. As a consistency check, these shape coefficients $f_a$ and $f_c$ satisfy the differential relation as derived previously for the Rényi entropy. Interestingly, these holographic relations also apply to weakly coupled conformal field theories such as theories of free fermions and vectors but are viola…
We extend the approach of Casini, Huerta and Myers to a new calculation of the Renyi entropy of a general CFT in d dimensions with a spherical entangling surface, in terms of certain thermal partition functions. We apply this approach to calculate the Renyi entropy in various holographic models. Our results indicate that in general, the Renyi entropy will be a complicated nonlinear function of the central charges and other parameters which characterize the CFT. We also exhibit the relation between this new thermal calculation and a conventional calculation of the Renyi entropy where a twist op…
We construct a new class of entanglement measures by extending the usual definition of Renyi entropy to include a chemical potential. These charged Renyi entropies measure the degree of entanglement in different charge sectors of the theory and are given by Euclidean path integrals with the insertion of a Wilson line encircling the entangling surface. We compute these entropies for a spherical entangling surface in CFT's with holographic duals, where they are related to entropies of charged black holes with hyperbolic horizons. We also compute charged Renyi entropies in free field theories.
We describe a holographic approach to explicitly compute the universal logarithmic contributions to entanglement and Renyi entropies for free conformal scalar and spinor fields on even-dimensional spheres. This holographic derivation proceeds in two steps: first, following Casini and Huerta, a conformal map to thermal entropy in a hyperbolic geometry; then, identification of the hyperbolic geometry with the conformal boundary of a bulk hyperbolic space and use of an AdS/CFT holographic formula to compute the resulting functional determinant. We explicitly verify the connection with the type-A …
In this paper, we extend our study of the holographic Rényi entropy of single interval on a torus to the CFT with W symmetry. To read the possible corrections from W fields clearly, we compute the thermal correction to the Rényi entropy up to the order $e^{-8π/TL}$. In the field theory, this requires us to compute the contribution from all the level 4 states, from both the vacuum module and W primaries. On the gravity side, after computing the eigenvalue of single Schottky generators to the order $e^{-4 π/TL}$, we obtain the 1-loop quantum correction to the holographic Rényi entropy. We find c…
We construct a new class of entanglement measures named "rotating Rényi entropy" by the holographic calculation of a rotating topological black hole belonging to the Petrov type-D class, we compute this kind of entropy for a spherical entangling surface of a vacuum state in the dual CFT. We find that the latter one could be conformally transformed to a thermal state on the boundary geometry of the rotating topological black hole with certain temperature. Then according to the angular velocity of the bulk black hole, we introduce the chemical potential in the boundary thermodynamics, which appe…
We compute holographic Rényi entropies for spherical entangling surfaces on the boundary while considering third order Lovelock gravity with negative cosmological constant in the bulk. Our study shows that third order Lovelock black holes with hyperbolic event horizon are unstable, and at low temperatures those with smaller mass are favoured, giving rise to first order phase transitions in the bulk. We determine regions in the Lovelock parameter space in arbitrary dimensions, where bulk phase transitions happen and where boundary causality constraints are met. We show that each of these points…
We investigate the holographic Rényi entropy for two-dimensional $\mathcal N=(2,2)$ superconformal field theory (SCFT), which is dual to $\mathcal N=2$ supergravity in AdS$_3$ background. In SCFT we have the stress tensor, current, and their supersymmetric partners, and in supergravity we have the graviton, vector field, and two gravitinos. We get the Rényi mutual information of two short intervals on complex plane in expansion by the cross ratio $x$ to order $x^4$, and Rényi entropy of one interval on torus in expansion by $q=\exp(-2πβ/L)$, with $β$ being the inverse temperature and $L$ being…
The study of Rényi mutual information (RMI) sheds light on the AdS/CFT correspondence beyond classical order. In this article, we study the Rényi mutual information between two intervals at large distance in two-dimensional holographic warped conformal field theory, which is conjectured to be dual to the gravity on AdS3 or warped AdS3 spacetime under the Dirichlet-Newman boundary conditions. By using the operator product expansion of twist operators up to level 3, we read the leading oder and the next-toleading order RMI in the large central charge and small cross-ratio limits. The leading ord…
We calculate the Rényi entropy $S_q(μ,λ)$, for a spherical entangling surface in CFT's with Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell holographic duals. Rényi entropies must obey some interesting inequalities by definition. However, for Gauss-Bonnet couplings $λ$, larger than a specific value, but still allowed by causality, we observe a violation of the inequality $\frac{\partial}{\partial q}\left({\frac{q - 1}{q}S_q(μ,λ)} \right) \ge 0$, which is related to the existence of negative entropy black holes, providing interesting restrictions in the bulk theory. Moreover, we find an interesting distinction o…
In this paper, we study Rényi holographic dark energy model in the context of Chern Simons (CS) modified gravity theory. Different cosmological parameters such as energy density, deceleration parameter, equation of state, square of sound speed and cosmological plane are discussed using FRW metric. Two separate solutions of CS field equations arose. The Rényi HDE model showed the transition from deceleration to acceleration phase which is fully consistent with the observational data while in the second case it represented a decelerated phase of expansion only. In fact, EoS illustrates the era o…
A remarkable yet mysterious property of black holes is that their entropy is proportional to the horizon area. This area law inspired the holographic principle, which was later realized concretely in gauge/gravity duality. In this context, entanglement entropy is given by the area of a minimal surface in a dual spacetime. However, discussions of area laws have been constrained to entanglement entropy, whereas a full understanding of a quantum state requires Renyi entropies. Here we show that all Renyi entropies satisfy a similar area law in holographic theories and are given by the areas of du…
In this work, the Renyi holographic dark energy (RHDE)and its behaviour has been explored with the anisotropic and spatially homogeneous Bianchi type-I Universe in the framework of $f(G)$ gravity. We use IR cutoff as the Hubble and Granda-Oliveros (GO) horizons. To find a consistent solutions of the field equations of the models, it is assumed that the deceleration parameter is defined in terms of function of Hubble parameter $H$. With reference to current cosmological data, the behaviors of the cosmological parameters relating to the dark energy model are evaluated and their physical signific…
We present a holographic method for computing the response of Rényi entropies in conformal field theories to small shape deformations around a flat (or spherical) entangling surface. Our strategy employs the stress tensor one-point function in a deformed hyperboloid background and relates it to the coefficient in the two-point function of the displacement operator. We obtain explicit numerical results for $d=3,\dots,6$ spacetime dimensions, and also evaluate analytically the limits where the Rényi index approaches 1 and 0 in general dimensions. We use our results to extend the work of 1602.084…
We perform a holographic calculation of the Entanglement Rényi entropy $S_q(μ,λ)$, for spherical entangling surfaces in boundary CFT's with Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell holographic gravitational duals. We find that for Gauss-Bonnet couplings $λ$, larger than a specific value, but still allowed by causality, a violation of an inequality that Rényi entropies must obey by definition occurs. This violation is related to the existence of negative entropy black holes and restricts the coefficient of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling in the bulk theory. Furthermore, we discover a distinction in the analytic…
In this paper, we study the holographic Rényi entropy of a large interval on a circle at high temperature for the two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) dual to pure AdS$_3$ gravity. In the field theory, the Rényi entropy is encoded in the CFT partition function on $n$-sheeted torus connected with each other by a large branch cut. As proposed by Chen and Wu [Large interval limit of Rényi entropy at high temperature, arXiv:1412.0763], the effective way to read the entropy in the large interval limit is to insert a complete set of state bases of the twist sector at the branch cut. Then the…
An entanglement Renyi entropy for a spatial partition of a system is studied in conformal theories which admit a dual description in terms of an anti-de Sitter gravity. The divergent part of the Renyi entropy is computed in 4D conformal N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at a weak coupling. This result is used to suggest a holographic formula which reproduces the Renyi entropy at least in the leading approximation. The holographic Renyi entropy is an invariant functional set on a codimension 2 minimal hypersurface in the bulk geometry. The bulk space does not depend on order $n$ of the Renyi entropy.…
We compute Rényi entropies for a spherical entangling surface in four-dimensional N=4 super-Yang-Mills at strong coupling using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Incorporating the effects of the leading α' corrections to the low energy effective action of type IIB string theory, we calculate the leading corrections in inverse powers of the 't Hooft coupling (and the number of colours). The results are compared with known weak coupling calculations. Setting the order of the Rényi entropy q to one, it reduces to the entanglement entropy and the strong and weak coupling results match without any correc…
We explore the role of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy in AdS/CFT and in finite-dimensional models of holographic quantum error correction. In particular, in the context of operator algebra quantum error correction, we discuss a suitable generalization of sandwiched Renyi relative entropy over finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras. It is then shown that the equality of bulk and boundary sandwiched relative Renyi entropies is equivalent to algebraic encoding of bulk and boundary states, the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the equality of bulk and boundary relative entropy, and subregion duality. Th…
We perform a detailed analysis of holographic entanglement Rényi entropy in some modified theories of gravity with four dimensional conformal field theory duals. First, we construct perturbative black hole solutions in a recently proposed model of Einsteinian cubic gravity in five dimensions, and compute the Rényi entropy as well as the scaling dimension of the twist operators in the dual field theory. Consistency of these results are verified from the AdS/CFT correspondence, via a corresponding computation of the Weyl anomaly on the gravity side. Similar analyses are then carried out for thre…
We compute the time-dependent complexity of the thermofield double states by four different proposals: two holographic proposals based on the "complexity-action" (CA) conjecture and "complexity-volume" (CV) conjecture, and two quantum field theoretic proposals based on the Fubini-Study metric (FS) and Finsler geometry (FG). We find that four different proposals yield both similarities and differences, which will be useful to deepen our understanding on the complexity and sharpen its definition. In particular, at early time the complexity linearly increase in the CV and FG proposals, linearly d…
The recent study in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence shows that the tree level contribution and 1-loop correction of holographic Rényi entanglement entropy (HRE) exactly match the direct CFT computation in the large central charge limit. This allows the Rényi entanglement entropy to be a new window to study the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this paper we generalize the study of Rényi entanglement entropy in pure AdS$_3$ gravity to the massive gravity theories at the critical points. For the cosmological topological massive gravity (CTMG), the dual conformal field theory (CFT) could be a chiral conf…
We exhibit the equivalence between the renormalized volume of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AAdS) Einstein manifolds in four and six dimensions, and their renormalized Euclidean bulk gravity actions. The action is that of Einstein gravity, where the renormalization is achieved through the addition of a single topological term. We generalize this equivalence, proposing an explicit form for the renormalized volume of higher even-dimensional AAdS Einstein manifolds. We also show that evaluating the renormalized bulk gravity action on the conically singular manifold of the replica trick results i…
With an aim towards understanding the time-dependence of entanglement entropy in generic quantum field theories, we propose a covariant generalization of the holographic entanglement entropy proposal of hep-th/0603001. Apart from providing several examples of possible covariant generalizations, we study a particular construction based on light-sheets, motivated in similar spirit to the covariant entropy bound underlying the holographic principle. In particular, we argue that the entanglement entropy associated with a specified region on the boundary in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence…
In this paper, we will propose a universal relation between the holographic complexity (dual to a volume in AdS) and the holographic entanglement entropy (dual to an area in AdS). We will explicitly demonstrate that our conjuncture hold for all a metric asymptotic to AdS$_3$, and then argue that such a relation should hold in general due to the AdS version of the Cavalieri principle. We will demonstrate that it holds for Janus solution, which have been recently been obtained in type IIB string theory. We will also show that this conjecture holds for a circular disk. This conjecture will be use…
We study the holographic "complexity=action'" (CA) and "complexity=volume" (CV) proposals in Einstein-dilaton gravity in all spacetime dimensions. We analytically construct an infinite family of black hole solutions and use CA and CV proposals to investigate the time evolution of the complexity. Using the CA proposal, we find dimensional dependent violation of the Lloyd bound in early as well as in late times. Moreover, depending on the parameters of the theory, the bound violation relative to the conformal field theory result can be tailored in the early times as well. In contrast to the CA p…
We propose a new holographic dual of conformal field theory defined on a manifold with boundaries, i.e. BCFT. Our proposal can apply to general boundaries and agrees with arXiv:1105.5165 for the special case of a disk and half plane. Using the new proposal of AdS/BCFT, we successfully obtain the expected boundary Weyl anomaly and the obtained boundary central charges satisfy naturally a c-like theorem holographically. We also investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of BCFT and find that the minimal surface must be normal to the bulk spacetime boundaries when they intersect. Interestin…
Recently, the Rényi and Tsallis generalized entropies have extensively been used in order to study various cosmological and gravitational setups. Here, using a special type of generalized entropy, a generalization of both the Rényi and Tsallis entropy, together with holographic principle, we build a new model for holographic dark energy. Thereinafter, considering a flat FRW universe, filled by a pressureless component and the new obtained dark energy model, the evolution of cosmos has been investigated showing satisfactory results and behavior. In our model, the Hubble horizon plays the role o…
This paper is an extended version of our short letter on a new proposal for holographic boundary conformal field, i.e., BCFT. By using the Penrose-Brown-Henneaux (PBH) transformation, we successfully obtain the expected boundary Weyl anomaly. The obtained boundary central charges satisfy naturally a c-like theorem holographically. We then develop an approach of holographic renormalization for BCFT, and reproduce the correct boundary Weyl anomaly. This provides a non-trivial check of our proposal. We also investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of BCFT and find that our proposal gives …
We explore the two holographic complexity proposals for the case of a 2d boundary CFT with a conformal defect. We focus on a Randall-Sundrum type model of a thin AdS$_2$ brane embedded in AdS$_3$. We find that, using the "complexity=volume" proposal, the presence of the defect generates a logarithmic divergence in the complexity of the full boundary state with a coefficient which is related to the central charge and to the boundary entropy. For the "complexity=action" proposal we find that the complexity is not influenced by the presence of the defect. This is the first case in which the resul…
We examine holographic complexity in time-dependent Vaidya spacetimes with both the complexity$=$volume (CV) and complexity$=$action (CA) proposals. We focus on the evolution of the holographic complexity for a thin shell of null fluid, which collapses into empty AdS space and forms a (one-sided) black hole. In order to apply the CA approach, we introduce an action principle for the null fluid which sources the Vaidya geometries, and we carefully examine the contribution of the null shell to the action. Further, we find that adding a particular counterterm on the null boundaries of the Wheeler…
In the context of the holographic duality, the entanglement entropy of ordinary QFT in a subregion in the boundary is given by a quarter of the area of an minimal surface embedded in the bulk spacetime. This rule has been also extended to a suitable one-parameter generalization of the von-Neuman entropy $\hat{S}_n$ that is related to the Rényi entropies $S_n$, as given by the area of a \emph{cosmic brane} minimally coupled with gravity, with a tension related to $n$ that vanishes as $n\to1$, and moreover, this parameter can be analytically extended to arbitrary real values. However, the brane …
We consider the generic massless cubic gravities coupled to a negative bare cosmological constant mainly in $D=5$ and $D=4$ dimensions, which are Einstein gravity extended with cubic curvature invariants where the linearized excited spectrum around the AdS background contains no massive modes. The generic massless cubic gravities are more general than Myers quasi-topological gravity in $D=5$ and Einsteinian cubic gravity in $D=4$. It turns out that the massless cubic gravities admit the black holes at least in a perturbative sense with the coupling constants of the cubic terms becoming infinit…
We propose a new entropy construct that generalizes the Tsallis, Rényi, Sharma-Mittal, Barrow, Kaniadakis, and Loop Quantum Gravity entropies and reduces to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in a certain limit. This proposal is applied to the Schwarzschild black hole and to spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmology, where it is shown that it can potentially describe inflation and/or holographic dark energy.
