Recently, we presented a two-dimensional (2D) model of a weak topological insulator formed by stacking an $N$ number of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains \cite{Agrawal_2022-02}. We now study the influence of periodic driving on the topological properties of this system, which has all the fundamental symmetries, by shining it with circularly polarized light (CPL). The CPL is chosen because it breaks the time-reversal symmetry, which induces more exotic topological properties in the system. We investigate two different formations of the $N$ stacked SSH chains: all the SSH chains are topologically trivial in one formation and nontrivial in the other one. In contrast to the undriven or static case, both formations exhibit distinct topological behaviors. Here, we particularly derive the Floquet or the effective Hamiltonian using the replica method, which facilitates the study of high- and low-frequency regimes. We have discovered that this model exhibits laser-induced Floquet topological phases with higher Chern numbers. This system has nonlinear dispersion along both directions with additional $k_x-k_y$ coupling terms, which made the dispersion of this system {\it unconventional}. We closely study the role of this unconventional dispersion in the system at the low-energy limit and its response to periodic driving. The low-energy Hamiltonian also reveals a hierarchy in the gaps of the neighboring Floquet bands. Interestingly, though this model has nonlinear quasi-energy dispersion, it still shows some signatures of hierarchy, which was observed in the system with linear dispersion like graphene. Furthermore, we study the effect of linearly polarized light (LPL) on the topological properties of the system. In response to the LPL driving, the band-touching point either opens up or splits into two band-touching points.
We study an unconventional quantum Hall effect for the surface states of ultrathin Floquet topological insulators in a perpendicular magnetic field. The resulting band structure is modified by photon dressing and the topological property is governed by the low-energy dynamics of a single surface. An exchange of symmetric and antisymmetric surface states occurs by reversing the light's polarization. We find a novel quantum Hall state in which the zeroth Landau level undergoes a phase transition from a trivial insulator state, with Hall conductivity $σ_{yx}=0$ at zero Fermi energy, to a Hall ins…
We study theoretically the charged current above a topological insulator (TI) separated by a ferromagnetic insulating layer. An unconventional Hall response occurs in the conducting layer on top of the TI which approaches to a constant value independent of R for R<<l and decays with R^{-1} for R>>l, where R is the separation between TI and conducting layer and l is the screening length. In the comoving frame, it can be interpreted as a monopole current attached to the TI surface. The same mechanism gives the Hall response and deflection of the electron beam injected to the surface of insulatin…
We report on transport properties of Josephson junctions in hybrid superconducting-topological insulator devices, which show two striking departures from the common Josephson junction behavior: a characteristic energy that scales inversely with the width of the junction, and a low characteristic magnetic field for suppressing supercurrent. To explain these effects, we propose a phenomenological model which expands on the existing theory for topological insulator Josephson junctions.
A general and beautiful picture for the realization of topological insulators is that the mass term of the Dirac model has a nodal surface wrapping one Dirac point. We show that this geometric picture based on Dirac points can be generalized to extended band degeneracies with nontrivial topological charges. As the nontrivial topological charges force the extended band degeneracies to be created or annihilated in pairs, when the nodal surface of mass wraps one such extended band degeneracy, the resulting gapped phase must be topologically nontrivial since it cannot adiabatically be deformed int…
We study and classify the proximity-induced superconducting pairing in a topological insulator (TI)-superconductor (SC) hybrid structure for SCs with different symmetries. The Dirac surface state gives a coupling between spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing amplitudes as well as pairing that is odd in frequency for p-wave SCs. We also find that all SCs induce pairing that is odd in both frequency and orbital (band) index, with oddness in frequency and orbital index being completely interchangeable. The different induced pairing amplitudes significantly modifies the density of states in the TI…
We present theoretically the thermal Hall effect of magnons in a ferromagnetic lattice with a Kekulé-O coupling (KOC) modulation and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Through a strain-based mechanism for inducing the KOC modulation, we identify four topological phases in terms of the KOC parameter and DMI strength. We calculate the thermal magnon Hall conductivity ${κ^{xy}}$ at low temperature in each of these phases. We predict an unconventional conductivity due to a non-zero Berry curvature emerging from band proximity effects in the topologically trivial phase. We find sign changes…
The Dirac electrons occupying the surface states (SSs) of topological insulators (TIs) have been predicted to exhibit many exciting magneto-transport phenomena. Here we report on the first experimental observation of an unconventional planar Hall effect (PHE) and an electrically gate-tunable hysteretic planar magnetoresistance (PMR) in EuS/TI heterostructures, in which EuS is a ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) with an in-plane magnetization. In such exchange-coupled FMI/TI heterostructures, we find a significant (suppressed) PHE when the in-plane magnetic field is parallel (perpendicular) to the …
We proposed that the simultaneous presence of both Rashba and band inversion can lead to a Rashba-like spin-splitting formed by two bands with the same in-plane helical spin texture. Because of this unconventional spin texture, the backscattering is forbidden in edge and bulk conductivity channels. We propose a new non-centrosymmetric honeycomb-lattice quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator family formed by the IV, V, and VII elements with this property. The system formed by Bi, Pb and I atoms is mechanically stable and has both a large Rashba spin-splitting of 60 meV and a large nontrivial band ga…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on Cux(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 (CPSBS; x = 1.47), a superconductor derived from a topological insulator heterostructure, to elucidate the electronic states relevant to the occurrence of possible unconventional superconductivity. Upon Cu intercalation into the parent compound (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6, we observed a distinct energy shift of the bulk conduction band due to electron doping. Photon-energy dependent ARPES measurements of CPSBS revealed that the observed bulk band forms a cylindrical electronlike Fermi surface at the Brillouin-zone …
The surface states of the three dimensional (3D) Topological Insulators are described by two-dimensional (2D) massless dirac equation. A gate voltage induced one dimensional potential barrier on such surface creates a discrete bound state in the forbidden region outside the dirac cone. Even for a single barrier it is shown such bound state can create electrostatic analogue of Shubnikov de Haas oscillation which can be experimentally observed for relatively smaller size samples. However when these surface states are exposed to a periodic arrangement of such gate voltage induced potential barrie…
Proximity-induced superconductivity in three dimensional (3D) topological insulators forms a new quantum phase of matter and accommodates exotic quasiparticles such as Majorana bound states. One of the biggest drawbacks of the commonly studied 3D topological insulators is the presence of conducting bulk that obscures both surface states and low energy bound states. Introducing superconductivity in topological Kondo insulators such as SmB$_6$, however, is promising due to their true insulating bulk at low temperatures. In this work, we develop an unconventional Josephson junction by coupling su…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, we report that an unconventional high-temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the Néel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 n$Ω$ cm. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AF…
In a topological insulator (TI)/magnetic insulator (MI) hetero-structure, large spin-orbit coupling of the TI and inversion symmetry breaking at the interface could foster non-planar spin textures such as skyrmions at the interface. This is observed as topological Hall effect in a conventional Hall set-up. While this effect has been observed at the interface of TI/MI, where MI beholds perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, non-trivial spin-textures that develop in interfacial MI with in-plane magnetic anisotropy is under-reported. In this work, we study Bi$_2$Te$_3$/EuS hetero-structure using plan…
Quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAH)/$s$-wave superconductor (SC) hybrid systems are known to be an ideal platform for realizing two-dimensional topological superconductors with chiral Majorana edge modes. In this paper we study QAH/unconventional SC hybrid systems whose pairing symmetry is $p$-wave, $d$-wave, chiral $p$-wave, or chiral $d$-wave. The hybrid systems are a generalization of the QAH/$s$-wave SC hybrid system. In view of symmetries of the QAH and pairings, we introduce three topological numbers to classify topological phases of the hybrid systems. One is the Chern number that ch…
We study a topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a quantum spin Hall insulator in two-dimensional (2D) systems with time-reversal and two-fold rotation symmetries. Contrary to the case of ordinary time-reversal invariant systems where a direct transition between two insulators is generally predicted, we find that the topological phase transition in systems with an additional two-fold rotation symmetry is mediated by an emergent stable two-dimensional Weyl semimetal phase between two insulators. Here the central role is played by the so-called space-time inversion symmetry…
We report on the experimental observation of a cyclotron antiresonance in a canonical 3D topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Magneto-reflectance response of single crystal Bi$_2$Te$_3$ was studied in 18 Tesla magnetic field, and compared to other topological insulators studied before, the main spectral feature is inverted. We refer to it as an antiresonance. In order to describe this unconventional behavior we propose the idea of an imaginary cyclotron resonance frequency, which on the other hand indicates that the form of the Lorentz force that magnetic field exerts on charge carriers takes a…

We present an ab initio relativistic k.p theory of the effect of magnetic exchange field on the band structure in the gap region of bulk crystals and thin films of three-dimensional layered topological insulators. For the field perpendicular to the layers (along $z$), we reveal novel unconventional scenarios of the response of the band-gap edges to the magnetization. The modification of the valence and conduction states is considered in terms of their $Γ$-point spin $s^z$ and total angular momentum $J^z$ on the atomic sites where the states are localized. The actual scenario depends on whether…
Topological superconductors are exotic gapped phases of matter hosting Majorana mid-gap states on their boundary. In conventional topological superconductors, Majorana in-gap states appear in the form of either localized zero-dimensional modes or propagating spin-1/2 fermions with a quasi-relativistic dispersion relation. Here we show that unconventional propagating Majorana states can emerge on the surface of three-dimensional topological superconductors protected by rotational symmetry. The unconventional Majorana surface states fall into three different categories: a spin-$S$ Majorana fermi…
The newly discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) harbor a complex band structure involving multiple Dirac cones. These materials are potentially highly tunable by external electric field, temperature or strain and could find future applications in field-effect transistors, photodetectors, and nano-mechanical systems. Theoretically, it has been predicted that different Dirac cones, offset in energy and momentum-space, might harbor vastly different orbital character, a unique property which if experimentally realized, would present an ideal platform for accomplishing new spintronic…
Unconventional superconductivity arising from the interplay between strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetism is an intensive area of research. One form of unconventional superconductivity arises when Cooper pairs subjected to a magnetic exchange coupling acquire a finite momentum. Here, we report on a signature of finite momentum Cooper pairing in the 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3. We apply in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields to proximity-coupled Bi2Se3 and find that the in-plane field creates a spatially oscillating superconducting order parameter in the junction as evidenced by the e…
The interplay between strong electron-electron interactions and band topology can lead to novel electronic states that spontaneously break symmetries. The discovery of flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) with nontrivial topology has provided a unique platform in which to search for new symmetry-broken phases. Recent scanning tunneling microscopy and transport experiments have revealed a sequence of topological insulating phases in MATBG with Chern numbers $C=\pm 3, \, \pm 2, \, \pm 1$ near moiré band filling factors $ν= \pm 1, \, \pm 2, \, \pm 3$, corresponding to a simp…
The statistics of charge transport across a tunnel junction with energy-dependent scattering is investigated. A model with quadratic dispersion relation is discussed in general and, independently, in the two limiting cases of a large detector and of a linear dispersion relation. The measurement of charge takes place according to various protocols. It is found that, as a rule, the statistics is expressed by means of time-ordered current correlators, differing however from the conventional ones in the ordering prescription. Nevertheless binomial statistics is confirmed in all cases.
We clarify novel forms of scaling functions of conductance, critical conductance distribution and localization length in a disorder-driven quantum phase transition between band insulator and Weyl semimetal phases. Quantum criticality of the phase transition is controlled by a clean-limit fixed point with spatially anisotropic scale invariance. We argue that the anisotropic scale invariance is reflected on unconventional scaling function forms in the quantum phase transition. We verify the proposed scaling function forms in terms of transfer-matrix calculations of conductance and localization l…
We report unconventional transport properties of HgTe wells with inverted band structure: the resistance does not show insulating behavior even when it is of the order of $10^2\times h/2e^{2}$. The system is expected to be a two-dimensional topological insulator with a dominant edge state contribution. The results are inconsistent with theoretical models developed within the framework of the helical Luttinger liquid.
We put forward a tight-binding model for rhombohedral topological insulators materials with the space group $D^{5}_{3d}(R\bar{3}m)$. The model describes the bulk band structure of these materials over the whole Brillouin zone. Within this framework, we also describe the topological nature of surface states, characterized by a Dirac cone-like dispersion and the emergence of surface projected bulk states near to the Dirac-point in energy. We find that the breaking of the $R_{3}$ symmetry as one moves away from the $Γ$ point has an important role in the hybridization of the $p_x$, $p_y$, and $p_z…
Superconductivity and magnetism are generally incompatible because of the opposing requirement on electron spin alignment. When combined, they produce a multitude of fascinating phenomena, including unconventional superconductivity and topological superconductivity. The emergence of two-dimensional (2D)layered superconducting and magnetic materials that can form nanoscale junctions with atomically sharp interfaces presents an ideal laboratory to explore new phenomena from coexisting superconductivity and magnetic ordering. Here we report tunneling spectroscopy under an in-plane magnetic field …
Utilizing large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations, we investigate an unconventional two-component classical plasma in two dimensions which controls the behavior of the norms and overlaps of the quantum-mechanical wavefunctions of Ising-type quantum Hall states. The plasma differs fundamentally from that which is associated with the two-dimensional XY model and Abelian fractional quantum Hall states. We find that this unconventional plasma undergoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition from an insulator to a metal. The parameter values corresponding to Ising-type quantum Hall states l…
The propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in thin films of topological insulators is studied. The materials considered are second generation three dimensional topological insulators Bi$_2$Se$_3$, Bi$_2$Te$_3$, and Sb$_2$Te$_3$. Dispersion relations and propagation lengths are estimated numerically, taking into account the variation of bulk dielectric functions of topological insulators as well as substrate using the Drude-Lorentz model. Key factors affecting propagation length are identified and ways to modify the dispersion relations are suggested. The explanation of the apparent discrepa…
The Dirac cone on a surface of a topological insulator shows linear dispersion analogous to optics and its velocity depends on materials. We consider a junction of two topological insulators with different velocities, and calculate the reflectance and transmittance. We find that they reflect the backscattering-free nature of the helical surface states. When the two velocities have opposite signs, both transmission and reflection are prohibited for normal incidence, when a mirror symmetry normal to the junction is preserved. In this case we show that there necessarily exist gapless states at th…
Topological insulators are a new class of materials which have gapped spectra in the bulk, but are accompanied by topologically protected gapless excitations at the surface (edge) of the system. These phenomena have a close relationship with symmetry and dimensionality of the system through quantum anomalies. We point out that such a surface state is a physical realization of the domain-wall/overlap fermion. From this point of view, we discuss its implications for experiments of topological insulators. We also discuss an unconventional overlap fermion, which is suggested by the "periodic table…
Three-dimensional topological insulators represent a new class of materials in which transport is governed by Dirac surface states while the bulk remains insulating. Due to helical spin polarization of the surface states, the coupling of a 3D topological insulator to a nearby superconductor is expected to generate unconventional proximity induced $p$-wave superconductivity. We report here on the development and measurements of SQUIDs on the surface of strained HgTe, a 3D topological insulator, as a potential tool to investigate this effect.
Exotic excitations arise at the interface between a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) and superconductors. For example, Majorana fermions with a linear dispersion, $E\sim k$, exist in a short $π$ Josephson junction on the TI surface. We show that in these systems, the Andreev bound states spectrum becomes nearly flat at zero energy when the chemical potential is sufficiently away from the Dirac point. The flat dispersion is well approximated by $E\sim k^N$, where $N$ scales with the chemical potential. Similar evolution from linear to flat dispersion also occurs for the subgap spect…
We show that the second harmonic generation (SHG) is enhanced in the chiral one-dimensional electron currents in a broad frequency range. The origin of the enhancement is two-fold: first, the linear dispersion of the current and the associated plasmonic mode as well as the quasi-linear dispersion of plasmon-polariton result in the lift of the phase matching condition. Moreover, the strong field localization leads to the further increase of the SHG in the structure. The results suggest that the chiral currents localized at the domain walls of magnetic topological insulators can be an efficient …
The dispersion law of plasmons running along thin wires with radius $a$ is known to be practically linear. We show that in a wire with a dielectric constant $κ$ much larger than that of its environment $κ_e$, such dispersion law crosses over to a dispersionless three-dimensional-like law when the plasmon wavelength becomes shorter than the length $(a/2) \sqrt{(κ/κ_e)\ln(κ/2κ_e)}$ at which the electric field lines of a point charge exit from the wire to the environment. This happens both in trivial semiconductor wires and wires of three-dimensional topological insulators.
Non-local pairing processes at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to an $s$-wave superconductor are usually suppressed by helicity. However, additional proximity of a ferromagnetic insulator can substantially influence the helical constraint and therefore open a new conduction channel by allowing for crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) processes. We show a one-to-one correspondence between CAR and the emergence of odd-frequency triplet superconductivity. Hence, non-local transport experiments that identify CAR in helical liquids yield smoking-gun evidence for unconve…
We investigate surface plasmons at a planar interface between a normal dielectric and a topological insulator, where the Fermi-energy lies inside the bulk gap of the topological insulator and gives rise to a two-dimensional charge distribution of free Dirac electrons. We develop the methodology for the calculation of plasmon dispersions, using the framework of classical electrodynamics, with modified constituent equations due to Hall currents in the topological insulator, together with a Lindhard-type description for the two-dimensional charge distribution of free Dirac electrons. For a system…
We study a generic model of a Chern insulator supplemented by a Hubbard interaction in arbitrary even dimension $D$ and demonstrate that the model remains well-defined and nontrivial in the $D \to \infty$ limit. Dynamical mean-field theory is applicable and predicts a phase diagram with a continuum of topologically different phases separating a correlated Mott insulator from the trivial band insulator. We discuss various features, such as the elusive distinction between insulating and semi-metal states, which are unconventional already in the non-interacting case. Topological phases are charac…
The topological properties of fermions arise from their low-energy Dirac-like band dispersion and associated chiralities. Initially confined to points, extensions of the Dirac dispersion to lines and even loops have now been uncovered and semimetals hosting such features have been identified. However, experimental evidence for the enhanced correlation effects predicted to occur in these topological semimetals has been lacking. Here, we report a quantum oscillation study of the nodal loop semimetal ZrSiS in high magnetic fields that reveals significant enhancement in the effective mass of the q…
The low energy physics of both graphene and surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators is described by gapless Dirac fermions with linear dispersion. In this work, we predict the emergence of a "heavy" Dirac fermion in a graphene/topological insulator hetero-junction, where the linear term almost vanishes and the corresponding energy dispersion becomes highly non-linear. By combining {\it ab initio} calculations and an effective low-energy model, we show explicitly how strong hybridization between Dirac fermions in graphene and the surface states of topological insulators can r…
It is generally believed that the inter-edge coupling destroys the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect along with the gap opening at the Dirac points. Using first-principles calculations, we find that the quantized edge transport persists in the presence of inter-edge coupling in Ta intercalated epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001), being a QSH insulator with the non-trivial gap of 81 meV. In this case, the band is characterized by two perfect Dirac cones with different Fermi velocities, yet only one maintains the edge state feature. We attribute such an anomalous behavior to the orbital-dependent decay…
We present first principles calculations of the nontrivial surface states and their spin-textures in the topological crystalline insulator SnTe. The surface state dispersion on the [001] surface exhibits four Dirac-cones centered along the intersection of the mirror plane and the surface plane. We propose a simple model of two interacting coaxial Dirac cones to describe both the surface state dispersion and the associated spin-texture. While the out-of-the-plane spin polarization is zero due to the crystalline and time-reversal symmetries, the in-plane spin texture shows helicity with some dis…
Topological superconductors (TSCs) are of significant current interest because they offer promising platforms for finding Majorana fermions. Here we report a new superconductor synthesized by intercalating Cu into a naturally-formed topological insulator (TI) heterostructure consisting of Bi2Se3 TI units separated by nontopological PbSe units. For the first time in a TI-based superconductor, the specific-heat behavior of this material suggests the occurrence of unconventional superconductivity with gap nodes. The existence of gap nodes in a strongly spin-orbit coupled superconductor would give…
We show that a wide class of unconventional quantum criticality emerges when orbital currents cause quantum phase transitions from zero-gap semiconductors such as Dirac fermions to topological insulator (TI) or Chern insulator (CI). Changes in Fermi surface topology concomitant with (SU(2) or time reversal) symmetry breakings generate quantum critical lines (QCL) even beyond the quantum critical point. This QCL running at temperature $T=0$ separates two distinct topological phases. This is in contrast to the simple termination of the finite temperature critical line at the quantum critical poi…
