We show that the second harmonic generation (SHG) is enhanced in the chiral one-dimensional electron currents in a broad frequency range. The origin of the enhancement is two-fold: first, the linear dispersion of the current and the associated plasmonic mode as well as the quasi-linear dispersion of plasmon-polariton result in the lift of the phase matching condition. Moreover, the strong field localization leads to the further increase of the SHG in the structure. The results suggest that the chiral currents localized at the domain walls of magnetic topological insulators can be an efficient source of second harmonic signal in the terahertz frequency range.
In this article we consider the chiral Hall effect due to topologically protected kink states formed in topological insulators at boundaries between domains with differing topological invariants. Such systems include the surfaces of three dimensional topological insulators magnetically doped or in proximity with ferromagnets, as well as certain two dimensional topological insulators. We analyze the equilibrium charge current along the domain wall and show that it is equal to the sum of counter-propagating equilibrium currents flowing along external boundaries of the domains. In addition, we al…
We theoretically study the magnetoelectric coupling in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator state induced by interfacing a dynamic magnetization texture to a topological insulator. In particular, we propose that the quantum anomalous Hall insulator with a magnetic configuration of a domain wall, when contacted by electrical reservoirs, acts as a magnetoelectric piston. A moving domain wall pumps charge current between electrical leads in a closed circuit, while applying an electrical bias induces reciprocal domain-wall motion. This piston-like action is enabled by a finite reflection of charge c…
Recent magnetoconductance measurements performed on magnetic topological insulator candidates have revealed butterfly-shaped hysteresis. This hysteresis has been attributed to the formation of gapless chiral domain-wall bound states during a magnetic field sweep. We treat this phenomenon theoretically, providing a link between microscopic magnetization dynamics and butterfly hysteresis in magnetoconductance. Further, we illustrate how a spatially resolved conductance measurement can probe the most striking feature of the domain-wall bound states: their chirality. This work establishes a regime…
We study the transport on the domain wall (DW) in a magnetic topological insulator. The low-energy behaviors of the magnetic topological insulator are dominated by the chiral edge states (CESs). Here, we find that the spectrum and transport of the CESs at the DW are strongly dependent on the DW configuration. For a Bloch wall, two co-propagating CESs at the DW are doubly degenerate and the incoming electron is totally reflected. However, for a Néel wall, the two CESs are split and the transmission is determined by the interference between the CESs. Moreover, the effective Hamiltonian for the C…
We study the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves in a slab-type waveguide which walls consist of three-dimensional topological insulator (3D TI). The results show that a cutoff frequency with topological stability limits the spectrum that propagates along the waveguide and are in agreement with experimental observations. Our approach also provides a way to measure the penetration length of surface metallic states in 3D TI.
The unique conduction properties of condensed matter systems with topological order have recently inspired a quest for similar effects in classical wave phenomena. Acoustic topological insulators, in particular, hold the promise to revolutionize our ability to control sound, allowing for large isolation in the bulk and broadband one-way transport on their edges, with topological immunity against structural defects and disorder. So far these fascinating properties have been obtained relying on moving media, which inherently introduce noise and absorption losses, hindering the practical applicab…
Topological insulators (TIs) show rich phenomena and functions which can never be realized in ordinary insulators. Most of them come from the peculiar surface or edge states. Especially, the quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) without an external magnetic field is realized in the two-dimensional ferromagnet on a three-dimensional TI which supports the dissipationless edge current. Here we demonstrate theoretically that the domain wall of this ferromagnet, which carries edge current, is charged and can be controlled by the external electric field. The chirality and relative stability of the …
We report on the direct observation of spin wave and elastic wave emission from magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic thin films. Driven by alternating homogeneous magnetic fields the magnetic domain walls act as coherent magnetisation wave sources. Directional and low damped elastic waves below and above the ferromagnetic resonance are excited. The wave vector of the magnetoelastically induced acoustic shear waves is linearly tuned by varying the excitation frequency. Domain wall emitted magnetostatic surface spin waves occur at higher frequencies, which characteristics are confirmed by micr…
We investigate the magnetization dynamics that arise when a thin-film ferromagnet is deposited on a topological insulator (TI), focusing in particular on domain-wall motion via current and the possibility of a spin-wave torque acting on the magnetization. We show analytically that the coupling between the magnetic domain wall and the TI removes the degeneracy of the wall profile with respect to its chirality and topological charge. Moreover, we find that the threshold for Walker breakdown of domain wall motion is substantially increased and determined by the interaction with the TI, allowing f…
Generation of non-equilibrium spin-motive force at the surface of a topological insulator induced by current-driven domain wall motion in the magnetic substrate
Recently, the magnetic domain walls have been experimentally observed in antiferromagnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, where we find that the topological zero-line modes (ZLMs) appear along the domain walls. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that these ZLMs are layer-dependent in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ multilayers. For domain walls with out-of-plane ferromagnetism, we find that ZLMs are equally distributed in the odd-number layers. When domain walls possess in-plane magnetization, the ZLMs can also exist in even-number layers due to in-plane mirror-symmetry breaking. Moreover, the conducti…
The electronic orders in magnetic and dielectric materials form the domains with different signs of order parameters. The control of configuration and motion of the domain walls (DWs) enables gigantic, nonvolatile responses against minute external fields, forming the bases of contemporary electronics. As an extension of the DW function concept, we realize the one-dimensional quantized conduction on the magnetic DWs of a topological insulator (TI). The DW of a magnetic TI is predicted to host the chiral edge state (CES) of dissipation-less nature when each magnetic domain is in the quantum anom…
Recent developments in the relationship between bulk topology and surface crystal symmetry have led to the discovery of materials whose gapless surface states are protected by crystal symmetries. In fact, there exists only a very limited set of possible surface crystal symmetries, captured by the 17 "wallpaper groups." We show that a consideration of symmetry-allowed band degeneracies in the wallpaper groups can be used to understand previous topological crystalline insulators, as well as to predict new examples. In particular, the two wallpaper groups with multiple glide lines, $pgg$ and $p4g…
Antiferromagnetic topological insulators harbor topological in-gap surface states protected by an anti-unitary $S$ symmetry, which is broken by the inevitable presence of domain walls. Whether an antiferromagnetic topological insulator with domain walls is gapless and metallic on its topological surfaces remains to be elucidated. We show that a single non-statistical index characterizing the magnetic order of domain wall-decorated antiferromagnetic topological insulator, referred to as the Ising moment, determines the topological surface gap, which can be zero even when the $S$ symmetry is man…
We propose a realization of perfect valley filters based on the chiral domain-wall channels between a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a quantum valley Hall insulator. Uniquely, all these channels reside in the same valley and propagate unidirectionally, $100\%$ valley-polarizing passing-by carriers without backscattering. The valley index, the chirality, and the number of the channels are protected by topological charges, controllable by external fields, and detectable by circular dichroism.
We propose to realize a one-dimensional chiral topological superconducting state at the magnetic domain walls stripe of a magnetic topological insulator coupled with a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. The localized Majorana zero modes can be constructed in a reconfigurable manner through magnetic domain writing by magnetic force microscopy. This proposal could be further extended to the Majorana zero modes at domain walls on superconducting spin-helical Dirac surface states, and may be applicable to the two-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductor on FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_…
We theoretically investigate domain wall motion in an antiferromagnetic insulator layer caused by thermally generated spin currents in an adjacent spin-split superconductor layer. An uncompensated antiferromagnet interface enables the two crucial ingredients underlying the mechanism - spin splitting in the superconductor and absorption of spin currents by the antiferromagnet. Treating the superconductor using the quasiclassical theory and the antiferromagnet via Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert description, we find domain wall propagation along the thermal gradient with relatively large velocities $\si…
Topological insulators are a new class of materials which have gapped spectra in the bulk, but are accompanied by topologically protected gapless excitations at the surface (edge) of the system. These phenomena have a close relationship with symmetry and dimensionality of the system through quantum anomalies. We point out that such a surface state is a physical realization of the domain-wall/overlap fermion. From this point of view, we discuss its implications for experiments of topological insulators. We also discuss an unconventional overlap fermion, which is suggested by the "periodic table…

We present a theoretical investigation of electron states hosted by magnetic domain walls on the 3D topological insulator surface. The consideration includes the domain walls with distinct vectorial and spatial textures. The study is carried out on the basis of the Hamiltonian for quasi-relativistic fermions by using a continual approach and tight-binding calculations. We derive the spectral characteristics and spatial localization of the the one-dimensional low-energy states appearing at the domain walls. The antiphase domain walls are shown to generate the topologically protected chiral stat…
In 2D topological insulators (TIs) based on semiconductor quantum wells such as HgTe/CdTe or InAs/GaSb/AlSb, spin polarized edge states have been predicted with a massless Dirac like dispersion. In a hard wall treatment based on the 4 x 4 BHZ Hamiltonian and open boundary conditions (OBCs), the wave function is weakly confined near the edge, with which it makes no contact. In contrast, standard boundary conditions for the wave function and its derivative (SBCs) lead to strong confinement with a peak amplitude at the edge. Unfortunately, weak confinement exhibits unphysical behavior related to …
A phenomenological model for the interface between trivial and topological two-dimensional insulators possessing the same band gap is presented. The model depends on three measurable parameters, the energy gap $E_g$, the Fermi velocity of the metallic edge states $v_F$ and the thickness of the interface $Δ$ where the gap inversion occurs, and can be reduced to the Schrödinger equation for the modified Pöschl-Teller potential, which admits an analytical solution. It is demonstrated that the underlying physics is determined by the adimensional parameter $α=E_gΔ/2\hbar v_F$, whose integral part d…
We investigate theoretically properties of two-dimensional topological insulator constrictions both in the integer and fractional regimes. In the presence of a perpedicular magnetic field, the constriction functions as a spin filter with near-perfect efficiency and can be switched by electric fields only. Domain walls between different topological phases can be created in the constriction as an interface between tunneling, magnetic fields, charge density wave, or electron-electron interactions dominated regions. These domain walls host non-Abelian bound states with fractional charge and spin a…
A flat band in fermionic system is a dispersionless single-particle state with a diverging effective mass and nearly zero group velocity. These flat bands are expected to support exotic properties in the ground state, which might be important for a wide range of promising physical phenomena. For many applications it is highly desirable to have such states in Dirac materials, but so far they have been reported only in non-magnetic Dirac systems. In this work we propose a realization of topologically protected spin-polarized flat bands generated by domain walls in planar magnetic topological ins…
We study a system of Dirac electrons with finite density of charge carriers coupled to an external electromagnetic field in two spatial dimensions, with a domain wall (DW) mass term. The interface between a thin-film ferromagnet and a three-dimensional topological insulator provides a condensed-matter realization of this model, when an out-of-plane domain wall magnetization is coupled to the TI surface states. We show how, for films with very weak intrinsic in-plane anisotropies, the torque generated by the edge electronic current flowing along the DW competes with an effective in-plane anisot…
Magnetic domain walls function as a wave guide for low energy magnons. In this paper we develop the theory for the non-local transport of these bound magnons through a ferromagnetic insulator that are injected and detected electrically in adjacent normal metal leads by spin-flip scatting processes and the (inverse) spin-Hall effect. Our set-up requires a twofold degeneracy of the magnetic ground state, which we realize by an easy axis and hard axis anisotropy, in the ferromagnetic insulator. This is readily provided by a broad range of materials. The domain wall is a a topologically protected …
In a recent experiment, half-quantized longitudinal conductance plateaus (HQCPs) of height $\frac{e^2}{2h}$ have been observed in quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator/superconductor heterostructure transport measurements. It was predicted that these HQCPs are signatures of chiral Majorana edge states. The HQCPs are supposed to appear in the regimes where the Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ is quantized. However, experimentally, a pair of the HQCPs appear when the Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ is only 80% of the quantized value when dissipative channels appear in the bulk. The dissipative channels in t…
Slow-light waveguides can strongly enhance light-matter interaction, but suffer from narrow bandwidth, increased backscattering, and Anderson localization. Edge states in photonic topological insulators resist backscattering and localization, but typically cross the bandgap over a single Brillouin zone, meaning that slow group velocity implies narrow-band operation. Here we show theoretically that this can be circumvented via an edge termination that causes the edge state to wind many times around the Brillouin zone, making it both slow and broadband.
In this tutorial, we pedagogically review recent developments in the field of non-interacting fermionic phases of matter, focussing on the low energy description of higher-order topological insulators in terms of the Dirac equation. Our aim is to give a mostly self-contained treatment. After introducing the Dirac approximation of topological crystalline band structures, we use it to derive the anomalous end and corner states of first- and higher-order topological insulators in one and two spatial dimensions. In particular, we recast the classical derivation of domain wall bound states of the S…
We explore the emergence of spin-polarised flat-bands at head-to-head domain walls in a recently predicted class of antiferromagnetic topological insulators hosting planar magnetisation. We show, in the framework of quantum well physics, that by tuning the width of a domain wall one can control the functional form of the bound states appearing across it. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effect that the parity of the number of layers in a multilayer sample has on the electronic dispersion. In particular, the alignment of the magnetisation vectors on the terminating surfaces of odd layer samples …
We consider the influence of a spin accumulation in a normal metal on the magnetic statics and dynamics in an adjacent magnetic insulator. In particular, we focus on arbitary angles between the spin accumulation and the easy-axis of the magnetic insulator. Based on Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology supplemented with magnetoelectronic circuit theory, we find that the magnetic texture twists into a stable configuration that turns out to be described by a virtual, or image, domain wall configuration, i.e., a domain wall outside the ferromagnet. We show that even when the spin accumulation is …
The anomalous achromatic mirror operating in near-IR and visible frequency range was designed using an array of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) resonators. An incident wave interacting with MIM resonator experiences phase shift that is equal to the optical path travelled by the gap plasmon, excited by the wave. The phase gradient along the mirror surface is created through the difference in plasmons optical paths in resonators of different lengths. In the frequency region well below the plasma frequency of the metal, the phase gradient is a linear function of frequency, and thus the mirror operate…
The single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) can be a one-dimensional topological insulator, which is characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}$-topological invariant, winding number. Using the analytical expression for the winding number, we classify the topology for all possible chiralities of SWNTs in the absence and presence of a magnetic field, which belongs to the topological categories of BDI and AIII, respectively. We find that the majority of SWNTs are nontrivial topological insulators in the absence of a magnetic field. In addition, the topological phase transition takes place when the band gap is cl…
Advancing the development of spin-wave devices requires high-quality low-damping magnetic materials where magnon spin currents can propagate efficiently and interact effectively with local magnetic textures. We show that magnetic domain walls (DW) can modulate spin-wave transport in perpendicularly magnetized channels of Bi-doped yttrium-iron-garnet (BiYIG). Conversely, we demonstrate that the magnon spin current can drive DW motion in the BiYIG channel device by means of magnon spin-transfer torque. The DW can be reliably moved over 15 um distances at zero applied magnetic field by a magnon s…
Inducing magnetism onto a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) has been predicted to result in several novel quantum electromagnetic effects. This is a consequence of the highly strain-sensitive band topology of such symmetry-protected systems. We thus show that placing the TCI surface of SnTe in proximity to EuS, a ferromagnetic insulator, induces magnetism at the interface between SnTe and EuS and thus breaks time-reversal-symmetry in the TCI. Magnetotransport experiments on SnTe-EuS-SnTe trilayer devices reveal a hysteretic lowering of the resistance at the TCI surface that coincides wit…
Polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) loaded with different fractions of dispersed nano-graphene platelets (NGP) were studied by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy in the frequency range from 1 mHz to 1 MHz. Complex permittivity and dynamic ac conductivity as a function of frequency, temperature and composition were explored. The concentration-dependent insulator-to-conductor transition was traced through dependence of the dc conductivity and the onset of the dispersive ac ac conductivity. The temperature evolution of the dielectric spectra, below and above the fractional threshold exhibits different dyn…
We study the surface of a three-dimensional spin chiral $\mathrm{Z}_2$ topological insulator (class CII), demonstrating the possibility of its localization. This arises through an interplay of interaction and statistically-symmetric disorder, that confines the gapless fermionic degrees of freedom to a network of one-dimensional helical domain-walls that can be localized. We identify two distinct regimes of this gapless insulating phase, a `clogged' regime wherein the network localization is induced by its junctions between otherwise metallic helical domain-walls, and a `fully localized' regime…
Topological insulators are quantum materials that have an insulating bulk state and a topologically protected metallic surface state with spin and momentum helical locking and a Dirac-like band structure. Unique and fascinating electronic properties, such as the quantum spin Hall effect, quantum anomalous Hall effect, and topological magnetoelectric effect, as well as magnetic monopole images and Majorana fermions, have been observed in the topological insulator materials. With these unique properties, topological insulator materials have great potential applications in spintronics and quantum…
In a certain regime of low carrier densities and strong correlations, electrons can crystallize into a periodic arrangement of charge known as Wigner crystal. Such phases are particularly interesting in one dimension (1D) as they display a variety of charge and spin ground states which may be harnessed in quantum devices as high-fidelity transmitters of spin information. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the strong Coulomb interactions in Mott insulators and other flat band systems, may provide an attractive higher temperature platform for Wigner crystallization, but due to materials and…
