The dispersion law of plasmons running along thin wires with radius $a$ is known to be practically linear. We show that in a wire with a dielectric constant $κ$ much larger than that of its environment $κ_e$, such dispersion law crosses over to a dispersionless three-dimensional-like law when the plasmon wavelength becomes shorter than the length $(a/2) \sqrt{(κ/κ_e)\ln(κ/2κ_e)}$ at which the electric field lines of a point charge exit from the wire to the environment. This happens both in trivial semiconductor wires and wires of three-dimensional topological insulators.
We study the TE polarized electromagnetic surface wave propagating along the interface between materials with positive and negative magnetic permeability. Contrary to the TM polarized surface wave, the TE surface wave exhibits almost no radiation losses when scattered at semi-infinite dielectric interfaces.
We study topological surface-plasmon-polaritons at optical frequencies in diffraction gratings formed by bipartite corrugated metal-dielectric gratings. To do so we implement the theory as developed in Della Valle and Longhi to describe the amplitude of the field by an emergent Schrödinger-like equation. The tri-harmonic grating generates a bipartite Kronig-Penney model. Topologically protected localised modes are then predicted to occur at the edges of the grating and at defects formed by the combination of two mirror antisymmetric corrugations, whose bulk invariant is a step-wise varying Zak…
We consider the effect of periodic scalar and vector potentials generated by periodic deformations of the graphene crystal lattice, on the energy spectrum of electrons. The dependence of electron velocity near the Dirac point on the periodic perturbations of different types is discussed. We also investigated the effect of screening of the scalar potential by calculating the dielectric function as a function of the wave length of the periodic potential. This calculation shows that the periodic scalar field is strongly suppressed by the screening. Using the dependence of electron velocity on the…
The screening properties and collective excitations (plasmons) in AA-stacked bilayer graphene are studied within the random phase approximation (RPA). Whereas long lived plasmons in single layer graphene and in AB-stacked bilayer graphene can exist only in doped samples, we find that coherent plasmons can disperse in AA-stacked bilayer graphene {\it even in the absence of doping}. Moreover, we show that the characteristic low energy dispersion relation is unaffected by changes in the number of carriers, unless the chemical potential of the doped sample exceeds the inter-layer hopping energy. W…
In this comment we show that some equations and results of the paper titled "Dielectric screening and plasmons in AA-stacked bilayer graphene" are not correct. Furthermore, we present our results which seems to be more correct.
Zero-point fluctuations of surface plasmon modes near the interface between metal and nonlinear dielectric are shown to produce a thin layer of altered dielectric constant near the interface. This effect may be sufficiently large to produce multiple metastable states of the surface plasmon vacuum.
We have calculated the plasmon modes in graphene double layer structures at finite temperatures, taking into account the inhomogeneity of the dielectric background of the system. The effective dielectric function is obtained from the solution of the Poisson equation of three-layer dielectric medium with the graphene sheets located at the interfaces, separating the different materials. Due to the momentum dispersion of the effective dielectric function, the intra- and inter-layer bare Coulomb interactions in the graphene double layer system acquires an additional momentum dependence--an effect …
The kinetic approach is applied to calculate oscillations of a surface plasmon linewidth in a spheroidal metal nanoparticle embedded in any dielectric media. The principal attention is focused on the case, when the free electron path is much greater than the particle size. The linewidth of the plasmon resonance as a function of the particle radius, shape, dielectric constant of the surrounding medium, and the light frequency is studied in detail. It is found that the resonance plasmon linewidth oscillates with increasing both the particle size and the dielectric constant of surrounding medium.…
The local field approach and kinetic equation method is applied to calculate the surface plasmon radiative damping in a spheroidal metal nanoparticle embedded in any dielectric media. The radiative damping of the surface plasmon resonance as a function of the particle radius, shape, dielectric constant of the surrounding medium and the light frequency is studied in detail. It is found that the radiative damping grows quadratically with the particle radius and oscillates with altering both the particle size and the dielectric constant of a surrounding medium. Much attention is paid to the elect…
We analytically obtain the dispersion relations for transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) surface plasmon-polaritons in a nonlinear two-dimensional (2D) conducting material lying between two Kerr-type dielectric media. To this end, we use Maxwell's equations within the quasi-electrostatic, weakly dissipative regime. We show that the wavelength and propagation distance of surface plasmons decrease due to the nonlinearity of the surrounding dielectric. In contrast, the effect of the nonlinearity of the 2D material depends on the signs of the real and imaginary parts of the third-…
Highly confined "spoof" surface plasmon-like (SSP) modes are theoretically predicted to exist in a perforated metal film coated with a thin dielectric layer. Strong modes confinement results from the additional waveguiding by the layer. Spectral characteristics, field distribution, and lifetime of these SSPs are tunable by the holes' size and shape. SSPs exist both above and below the light line, offering two classes of applications: "perfect" far-field absorption and to efficient emission into guided modes. It is experimentally shown that these plasmon-like modes can turn thin, weakly-absorbi…
We report strong amplification of photo-magnetic spin precession in Co-doped YIG employing a surface plasmon excitation in a metal-dielectric magneto-plasmonic crystal. Plasmonic enhancement is accompanied by the localization of the excitation within the 300~nm-thick layer inside the transparent dielectric garnet. Experimental results are nicely reproduced by numerical simulations of the photo-magnetic excitation. Our findings demonstrate the magneto-plasmonic concept of subwavelength localization and amplification of the photo-magnetic excitation in dielectric YIG:Co and open up a path to all…
We use computational approaches to explore the role of a high-refractive-index dielectric TiO2 grating with deep subwavelength thickness on InSb as a tunable coupler for THz surface plasmons. We find a series of resonances as the grating couples a normally-incident THz wave to standing surface plasmon waves on both thin and thick InSb layers. In a marked contrast with previously-explored metallic gratings, we observe the emergence of a much stronger additional resonance. The mechanism of this giant plasmonic resonance is well interpreted by the dispersion of surface plasmon excited in the air\…
We theoretically investigate general existence conditions for broadband bulk large-wavevector (high-k) propagating waves (such as volume plasmon polaritons in hyperbolic metamaterials) in subwavelength periodic multilayer structures. Describing the elementary excitation in the unit cell of the structure by a generalized resonance pole of a reflection coefficient, and using Bloch's theorem, we derive analytical expressions for the band of large-wavevector propagating solutions. We apply our formalism to determine the high-k band existence in two important cases: the well-known metal-dielectric,…
We develop a consistent quantum description of surface plasmons interacting with quantum emitters and external electromagnetic field. Within the framework of macroscopic electrodynamics in dispersive and absorptive medium, we derive, in the Markov approximation, the canonical Hamiltonian, commutation relations, and coupling parameters for the plasmon modes in metal-dielectric structures of an arbitrary shape whose characteristic size is well below the diffraction limit. We then develop a new quantum approach bridging the macroscopic and canonical schemes which describes the interacting plasmon…
We investigate the plasmon dispersion relation and damping rate of collective excitations in a double-layer system consisting of bilayer graphene and GaAs quantum well, separated by a distance, at zero temperature with no interlayer tunneling. We use the random-phase-approximation dielectric function and take into account the nonhomogeneity of the dielectric background of the system. We show that the plasmon frequencies and damping rates depend considerably on interlayer correlation parameters, electron densities and dielectric constants of the contacting media.
We use coupled-mode theory to describe the scattering of a surface-plasmon polariton (SPP) from a square wave grating (Bragg grating) of finite extension written on the surface of either a metal-dielectric interface or a dielectric-dielectric interface covered with a patterned graphene sheet. We find analytical solutions for the reflectance and transmittance of SPP's when only two modes (forward- and back-scattered) are considered. We show that in both cases the reflectance spectrum presents stop-bands where the SPP is completely back-scattered, if the grating is not too shallow. In addition, …
It is shown that a graphene layer on top of a dielectric slab can dramatically influence the ability of this dielectric for radiative heat exchange. Effect of graphene is related to thermally excited plasmons. Frequency of these resonances lies in the terahertz region and can be tuned by varying the Fermi level through doping or gating. Heat transfer between two dielectrics covered with graphene can be larger than that between best known materials and even much larger at low temperatures. Moreover, high heat transfer can be significantly modulated by electrical means that opens up new possibil…
Passive optical elements can play key roles in photonic applications such as plasmonic integrated circuits. Here we experimentally demonstrate passive gap-plasmon focusing and routing in two-dimensions. This is accomplished using a high numerical-aperture metal-dielectric-metal lens incorporated into a planar-waveguide device. Fabrication via metal sputtering, oxide deposition, electron- and focused-ion- beam lithography, and argon ion-milling is reported on in detail. Diffraction-limited focusing is optically characterized by sampling out-coupled light with a microscope. The measured focal di…
Ultrafast all-optical control of spins with femtosecond laser pulses is one of the hot topics at the crossroads of photonics and magnetism with a direct impact on future magnetic recording. Unveiling light-assisted recording mechanisms for an increase of the bit density beyond the diffraction limit without excessive heating of the recording medium is an open challenge. Here we show that surface plasmon-polaritons in hybrid metal-dielectric structures can provide spatial confinement of the inverse Faraday effect, mediating the excitation of localized coherent spin precession with 0.41 THz frequ…
The paper deals with the theoretical investigation of intrasubband plasmons in an array of quantum wires, consisting of a finite number of quantum wires, arranged at an equal distance from each other and placed into an external magnetic field. Two types of quantum wire array are under consideration: an ordered array of quantum wires with equal electron densities in all quantum wires and weakly disordered array of quantum wires, which is characterized by the fact that the density of electrons of one defect quantum wire was different from that of other quantum wires. For the ordered array of qua…
Integrated photonic circuits are an integral part of all-optical and on-chip quantum information processing and quantum computer. Deterministically integrated single-photon sources in nanoplasmonic circuits lead to densely packed scalable quantum logic circuits operating beyond the diffraction limit. Here, we report the coupling efficiency of single-photon sources to the plasmonic waveguide, characteristic transmission spectrum, propagation length, decay length, and plasmonic Purcell factor. We simulated the transmission spectrum to find the appropriate wavelength for various width of the diel…
We introduce a method for calculating the dielectric function of nanostructures with an arbitrary band dispersion and Bloch wave functions. The linear response of a dissipative electronic system to an external electromagnetic field is calculated by a self-consistent-field approach within a Markovian master equation formalism (SCF-MMEF) coupled with full-wave electromagnetic equations. The SCF-MMEF accurately accounts for several concurrent scattering mechanisms. The method captures interband electron-hole-pair generation, as well as the interband and intraband electron scattering with phonons …
The drag of massless fermions in graphene double-layer structures is investigated in a wide rage of temperatures and inter-layer separations. We show that the inhomogeneity of the dielectric background in such graphene structures for experimentally relevant parameters results in a significant enhancement of the drag resistivity. At intermediate temperatures the dynamical screening via plasmon-mediated drag enhances the drag resistivity and results in an upturn in its behavior at large inter-layer separations. In a range of inter-layer separations, corresponding to the strong-to-weak crossover …
Phononless plasmon assisted thermally activated transport through a long disordered array of finite length quantum wires is investigated analytically. Generically strong electron plasmon interaction in quantum wires results in a qualitative change of the temperature dependence of thermally activated resistance in comparison to phonon assisted transport. At high temperatures, the thermally activated resistance is determined by the Luttinger liquid interaction parameter of the wires.
We develop a nonlocal-response generalization to the Green-function surface-integral method (GSIM), also known as the boundary-element method (BEM). This numerically light method can accurately describe the linear hydrodynamic nonlocal response of arbitrarily shaped plasmonic nanowires in arbitrary dielectric backgrounds. All previous general-purpose methods for nonlocal response are bulk methods. We also expand the possible geometries to which the usual local-response GSIM can be applied, by showing how to regularize singularities that occur in the surface integrals when the nanoparticles tou…
Metamaterials are known to exhibit a variety of electromagnetic properties non-existing in nature. We show that an all-dielectric (non-magnetic) system consisting of deep subwavelength, high permittivity resonant spheres possess effective negative magnetic permeability (dielectric permittivity being positive and small). Due to the symmetry of the electromagnetic wave equations in classical electrodynamics, localized "magnetic" plasmon resonances can be excited in a metasphere made of such metamaterial. This is theoretically demonstrated by the coupled-dipole approximation and numerically for r…
Electron-plasmon interaction in a thin cylindrical wire is described in terms of four-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory in which angular coordinate of the metal cylinder is considered to be one of the two compactified coordinates. In this model electron-electron, electron-plasmon and nonlinear optical plasmon-plasmon interactions are unified via introduction of effective superchiral charges and fields. Such an approach has important consequences for description of electromagnetic and transport properties of mesoscopic metallic wires and rings at low temperatures, such as recent observation of de…
The collective electronic excitations of arrays of Au chains on regularly stepped Si(553) and Si(775) surfaces were studied using electron loss spectroscopy with simultaneous high energy and momentum resolution (ELS-LEED) in combination with low energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED) and tunneling microscopy. Both surfaces contain a double chain of gold atoms per terrace. Although one-dimensional metallicity and plasmon dispersion is observed only along the wires, two-dimensional effects are important, since plasmon dispersion explicitly depends both on the structural motif of the wires and th…
We present numerical and analytical results for the optical and acoustic plasmon collective modes of coupled massless-Dirac two-dimensional electron systems. Our results apply to topological insulator (TI) thin films and to two graphene sheets separated by a thin dielectric barrier layer. We find that because of strong bulk dielectric screening TI acoustic modes are locked to the top of the particle-hole continuum and therefore probably unobservable.
We theoretically investigate surface plasmon polaritons propagating in the thin-film Weyl semimetals. We show how the properties of surface plasmon polaritons are affected by hybridization between plasmons localized at the two metal-dielectric interfaces. Generally, this hybridization results in new mixed plasmon modes, which are called short-range surface plasmons and long-range surface plasmons, respectively. We calculate dispersion curves of these mixed modes for three principle configurations of the axion vector describing axial anomaly in Weyl semimetals. We show that the partial lack of …
Optically active localized plasmon modes may be very abundant on a rough surface of a metal wire. Zero-point fluctuations of these modes are shown to produce local DC magnetization. Thus, the effect of these modes on the electron dephasing time is similar to the effect of magnetic impurities.
We consider scattering of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and light by individual high-refractive-index dielectric nanoparticles (NPs) located on a metal (gold) substrate and supporting electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectral range. Numerical calculations are carried out by making use of the discrete dipole approximation including the multipole decomposition procedure. Extinction and scattering cross section spectra of spheroid silicon NPs in visible and near-infrared are presented and discussed. The roles of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of electric and ma…
We study thermal transport in a one-dimensional quantum wire, connected to reservoirs. Despite of the absence of electron backscattering, interactions in the wire strongly influence thermal transport. Electrons propagate with unitary transmission through the wire and electric conductance is not affected. Energy, however, is carried by bosonic excitations (plasmons) which suffer from scattering even on scales much larger than the Fermi wavelength. If the electron density varies randomly, plasmons are localized and {\em charge-energy separation} occurs. We also discuss the effect of plasmon-plas…
We present an optical investigation of surface plasmon polaritons propagating along nanoscale Au-wires, lithographically defined on GaAs substrates. A two-axis confocal microscope was used to perform spatially and polarization resolved measurements in order to confirm the guiding of surface plasmon polaritons over lengths ranging from $5-20 μm$ along nanowires with a lateral dimension of only $\approx 100 nm$. Finite difference time domain simulations are used to corroborate our experimental observations and highlight the potential to couple proximal quantum dot emitters to propagating plasmon…
Placing quantum emitters close to a metallic nano-wire, an effective interaction can be achieved over distances large compared to the resonance wavelength due to the strong coupling between emitters and the surface plasmon modes of the wire. This leads to modified collective decay rates, as well as to Lamb and dipole-dipole shifts. In this paper we present a general method for calculating these level shifts which we subsequently apply to the case of a pair of atoms coupled to the guided modes of a nano-wire.
Photonic integrated circuits are an enabling technology in modern communications systems. The continually increasing demands for higher-speed and lower operating power devices have resulted in the continued impetus to shrink photonic components. In this work, we demonstrate a primitive nanophotonic integrated circuit element composed of a single silver nanowire and single-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) flake. We show that nanowire plasmons can excite MoS2 photoluminescence via direct plasmon-to-exciton conversion along the wire and plasmon-to-photon-to-exciton conversion at the MoS2-covered…
The formation of pulses of surface electromagnetic waves in a metal/dielectric interface is considered in the process of cooperative decay of excitons of quantum dots distributed near a metal surface in a dielectric layer. It is shown that the efficiency of exciton energy transfer to excited plasmons can be increased by selecting the dielectric material with specified values of the complex permittivity. It is found that in the mean field approximation the semiclassical model of formation of plasmon pulses in the system under study is reduced to the pendulum equation with the additional term of…
We study the dielectric properties of graphene in the presence of Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit interactions in their most general form, i.e., for arbitrary frequency, wave vector, doping, and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) parameters. The main result consists in the derivation of closed analytical expressions for the imaginary as well as for the real part of the polarization function. Several limiting cases, e.g., the case of purely Rashba or purely intrinsic SOC, and the case of equally large Rashba and intrinsic coupling parameters are discussed. In the static limit the asymptotic behavior of …
We demonstrate the coupling of a single nitrogen vacancy center in a nanodiamond to propagating plasmonic modes of mechanically etched silver nanowires. The mechanical etch is performed on single crystalline silver nanoplates by the tip of an atomic force microscope cantilever to produce wires with pre-designed lengths. We show that single plasmon propgation can be obtained in these wires, thus making these structures a platform for quantum information processing.
The current voltage (IV) characteristics for perpendicular transport through two sequentially coupled wires of finite length is calculated analytically. The transport within a Coulomb blockade step is assisted by plasmon resonances that appear as steps in the IV characteristics with positions and heights depending on inter- and intrawire interactions. In particular, due to the interwire interactions, the peak positions shift to lower voltages in comparison to the noninteracting wires which reflects the facilitation of current by interactions. The interwire interactions are also found to enhanc…
We develop a quantum-mechanical theory for Landau damping of surface plasmons in metal nanostructures larger that the characteristic length for nonlocal effects. We show that the electron surface scattering, which facilitates plasmon decay in small nanostructures, can be incorporated into the metal dielectric function on par with phonon and impurity scattering. The derived surface scattering rate is determined by the plasmon local field polarization relative to the metal-dielectric interface and is highly sensitive to the system geometry. We illustrate our model by providing analytical results…
We study theoretically the current-voltage characteristics, shot noise, and full counting statistics of a quantum wire double barrier structure. We model each wire segment by a spinless Luttinger liquid. Within the sequential tunneling approach, we describe the system's dynamics using a master equation. We show that at finite bias the non-equilibrium distribution of plasmons in the central wire segment leads to increased average current, enhanced shot noise, and full counting statistics corresponding to a super-Poissonian process. These effects are particularly pronounced in the strong interac…
We investigate the two-plasmon spontaneous decay of a quantum emitter near single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and graphene-coated wires (GCWs). We demonstrate efficient, enhanced generation of two-plasmon entangled states in SWCNTs due to the strong coupling between tunable guided plasmons and the quantum emitter. We predict two-plasmon emission rates more than twelve orders of magnitude higher than in free-space, with average lifetimes of a few dozens of nanoseconds. Given their low dimensionality, these systems could be more efficient for generating and detecting entangled plasmons in co…
