Deformation problems with cohomology constraints over a field of characteristic zero are controlled by L-infinity pairs. In this largely expository article we review this theory and focus on recent applications.
We introduce a notion of Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology associated to a semi-simplicial Lie algebra (SELA). For an algebraic scheme $X$ over $\C$, we construct a tangent SELA $\t_X$ and show that the Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology of $\t_X$ is related to infinitesimal deformations of $X$.
We show that the infinitesimal deformations of the Brill--Noether locus $W_d$ attached to a smooth non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the deformations of $C$. As an application, we prove that if a Jacobian $J$ deforms together with a minimal cohomology class out the Jacobian locus, then $J$ is hyperelliptic. In particular, this provides an evidence to a conjecture of Debarre on the classification of ppavs carrying a minimal cohomology class. Finally, we also study simultaneous deformations of Fano surfaces of lines and intermediate Jacobians.
In this paper, we compute the dimensions of the 1st and 2nd cohomology groups of all the pluricanonical bundles for Hirzebruch surfaces, and the dimensions of the 1st and 2nd cohomology groups of the second pluricanonical bundles for a blow-up of a projective plane along finite many distinct points. Both of them give examples showing that the higher cohomology of the pluricanonical bundle is not deformation invariant.
We reproduce the quantum cohomology of toric varieties (and of some hypersurfaces in projective spaces) as the cohomology of certain vertex algebras with differential. The deformation technique allows us to compute the cohomology of the chiral de Rham complex over the projective space.
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold, and let $π: \mathcal{X} \rightarrow B$ be a small deformation of $X$, the dimensions of the Bott-Chern cohomology groups $H_{\rm BC}^{p,q}(X(t))$ and Aeppli cohomology groups $H_{\rm A}^{p,q}(X(t))$ may vary under this deformation. In this paper, we will study the deformation obstructions of a $(p,q)$ class in the central fiber $X$. In particular, we obtain an explicit formula for the obstructions and apply this formula to the study of small deformations of the Iwasawa manifold.
The principle "ambient cohomology of a Kaehler manifold annihilates obstructions" has been known and exploited since pioneering work of Kodaira. This paper extends and unifies many known results in two contexts, abstract deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds and deformations of submanifolds within a given deformation of the ambient manifold.
We prove that under certain conditions, the quantum cohomology of a positively monotone compact symplectic manifold is a deformation of the symplectic cohomology of the complement of a simple crossings symplectic divisor. We also prove rigidity results for the skeleton of the divisor complement.
We prove that for every compact Kähler manifold $X$ there exists an $L$-infinity morphism, lifting the usual cup product in cohomology, from the Kodaira-Spencer differential graded Lie algebra to the suspension of the space of linear endomorphisms of the singular cohomology of $X$. As a consequence we get an algebraic proof of the principle ``obstructions to deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds annihilate ambient cohomology''.
Given a split $\mathbb{P}$-functor $F:\mathcal{D}^b(X) \to \mathcal{D}^b(Y)$ between smooth projective varieties, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the Hochschild cohomology of $X$, for it to become spherical on the total space of a deformation of $Y$, and explain how the spherical twist becomes the $\mathbb{P}$-twist on the special fibre. These results generalise the object case, that is when $X$ is a point, which was studied previously by Huybrechts and Thomas, and we show how they apply to the $\mathbb{P}$-functor associated to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 …
We compute Hochschild cohomology of projective hypersurfaces starting from the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex of the (restricted) structure sheaf. We are particularly interested in the second cohomology group and its relation with deformations. We show that a projective hypersurface is smooth if and only if the classical HKR decomposition holds for this group. In general, the first Hodge component describing scheme deformations has an interesting inner structure corresponding to the various ways in which first order deformations can be realized: deforming local multiplications, deforming restrict…
In this paper, we will outline computations of quantum sheaf cohomology for deformations of tangent bundles of toric varieties, for those deformations describable as deformations of toric Euler sequences. Quantum sheaf cohomology is a heterotic analogue of quantum cohomology, a quantum deformation of the classical product on sheaf cohomology groups, that computes nonperturbative corrections to analogues of (27*)^3 couplings in heterotic string computations. Previous computations have relied on either physics-based GLSM techniques or computation-intensive brute-force Cech cohomology techniques.…
We study the deformation-obstruction theory of Koszul cohomology groups of $g^r_d$'s on singular nodal curves. We compute the obstruction classes for Koszul cohomology classes on singular curves to deform to a smooth one. In the case the obstructions are nontrivial, we obtain some partial results for generic vanishing of Koszul cohomology groups.
We compare the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring of the weighted projective spaces $\IP(1,3,4,4)$ and $\IP(1,...,1,n)$ with the cohomology ring of their crepant resolutions. In both cases, we prove that the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring is isomorphic to the quantum corrected cohomology ring of the crepant resolution after suitable evaluation of the quantum parameters. For this, we prove a formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of the resolution of a transversal ${\rm A}_3$ singularity.
For an affine toric variety $\mathrm{Spec}(A)$, we give a convex geometric description of the Hodge decomposition of its Hochschild cohomology. Under certain assumptions we compute the dimensions of the Hodge summands $T^1_{(i)}(A)$, generalizing the existing results about the Andre-Quillen cohomology group $T^1_{(1)}(A)$. We prove that every Poisson structure on a possibly singular affine toric variety can be quantized in the sense of deformation quantization.
Let X be a hyperkahler manifold deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme of n points on a K3 surface. We compute the graded character formula of the generic Mumford-Tate group representation on the cohomology ring of X, and derive a generating series for deducing the number of canonical Hodge classes on X. The formula indicates the number of Hodge classes on X that remain Hodge under any deformation.
We give sufficient conditions for F-injectivity to deform. We show these conditions are met in two common geometrically interesting setting, namely when the special fiber has isolated CM-locus or is F-split.
We consider nilmanifolds with left-invariant complex structure and prove that small deformations of such structures are again left invariant if the Dolbeault-cohomology of the nilmanifold can be calculated using left-invariant forms. By a result of Console and Fino this is generically the case. Our main tool is an analog of Dolbeault-cohomology for Lie-algebras with complex structure.
In this paper, we establish a deformation theory for Dolbeault cohomology classes valued in holomorphic tensor bundles. We prove the extension equation which will play the role of Maurer-Cartan equation. Following the classical theory of Kodaira-Spencer-Kuranishi, we construct a canonical complete family of deformations by using the power series method. We also prove a simple relation between the existence of deformations and the varying of the dimensions of Dolbeault cohomology. The deformations of $(p,q)$-forms is shown to be unobstructed under some mild conditions. By analyzing Nakamura's e…
The cohomology groups of line bundles over complex tori (or abelian varieties) are classically studied invariants of these spaces. In this article, we compute the cohomology groups of line bundles over various holomorphic, non-commutative deformations of complex tori. Our analysis interpolates between two extreme cases. The first case is a calculation of the space of (cohomological) theta functions for line bundles over constant, commutative deformations. The second case is a calculation of the cohomologies of non-commutative deformations of degree-zero line bundles.
In the late '60s, B. Dwork studied a Frobenius structure compatible with the classical hypergeometric differential equation with parameters $\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2} ; 1 \right)$ by analyzing behavior of solutions of the differential equation under Frobenius transformation. Recently, P. Scholze conjectured the existence of $q$-de Rham cohomology groups for any $\mathbb{Z}$-scheme. In this paper, we give a Frobenius structure compatible with the $q$-hypergeometric differential equation with parameters $(q^{\frac12},q^{\frac12};q)$ by showing a $q$-analogue of some results of Dwork. This co…
In recent work with Bhatt and Morrow, we defined a new integral p-adic cohomology theory interpolating between etale and de Rham cohomology. An unexpected feature of this cohomology is that in coordinates, it can be computed by a q-deformation of the de Rham complex, which is thus canonical, at least in the derived category. In this short survey, we try to explain what we know about this phenomenon, and what can be conjectured to hold.
The cotangent cohomology groups T^1 and T^2 play an important role in deformation theory, the first as space of infinitesimal deformations, while the obstructions land in the second. Much work has been done to compute their dimension for rational surface singularities. For such singularities we give explicit dimension formulas for the groups T^i with i>2.
Schubert calculus has been in the intersection of several fast developing areas of mathematics for a long time. Originally invented as the description of the cohomology of homogeneous spaces it has to be redesigned when applied to other generalized cohomology theories such as the equivariant, the quantum cohomology, K-theory, and cobordism. All this cohomology theories are different deformations of the ordinary cohomology. In this note we show that there is in some sense the universal deformation of Schubert calculus which produces the above mentioned by specialization of the appropriate param…
We study the quantum sheaf cohomology of flag manifolds with deformations of the tangent bundle and use the ring structure to derive how the deformation transforms under the biholomorphic duality of flag manifolds. Realized as the OPE ring of A/2-twisted two-dimensional theories with (0,2) supersymmetry, quantum sheaf cohomology generalizes the notion of quantum cohomology. Complete descriptions of quantum sheaf cohomology have been obtained for abelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) and for nonabelian GLSMs describing Grassmannians. In this paper we continue to explore the quantum sheaf c…
For a pair (algebra, module) with equidimensional and isolated singularity we establish the existence of a versal henselian deformation. Obstruction theory in terms of an André-Quillen cohomology for pairs is a central ingredient in the Artin theory used. In particular we give a long exact sequence relating the algebra cohomology and the module cohomology with the cohomology of the pair and define a Kodaira-Spencer class for pairs. Cohen-Macaulay approximation induces maps between versal base spaces for pairs and cohomology conditions imply properties like smoothness, isomorphism and linear se…
We investigate deformations of free and linear free divisors. We introduce a complex similar to the de Rham complex whose cohomology calculates deformation spaces. This cohomology turns out to be zero for many linear free divisors and to be constructible in many cases
This paper introduces a two-parameter deformation of the cohomology of generalized flag varieties. One special case is the Belkale-Kumar deformation (used to study eigencones of Lie groups). Another picks out intersections of Schubert varieties that behave nicely under projections. Our construction yields a new proof that the Belkale-Kumar product is well-defined. This proof is shorter and more elementary than earlier proofs.
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold, consider a small deformation $ϕ: \mathcal{X} \to B$ of $X$, the dimensions of the cohomology groups of tangent sheaf $H^q(X_t,\mathcal{T}_{X_t})$ may vary under this deformation. This paper will study such phenomenons by studying the obstructions to deform a class in $H^q(X,\mathcal{T}_X)$ with the parameter $t$ and get the formula for the obstructions.
The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical theory of the half-twisted $(0,2)$ gauged linear sigma model and its correlation functions that agrees with and extends results from physics. The theory is associated to a smooth projective toric variety $X$ and a deformation $\sheaf E$ of its tangent bundle $T_X$. It gives a quantum deformation of the cohomology ring of the exterior algebra of $\sheaf E^*$. We prove that in the general case, the correlation functions are independent of `nonlinear' deformations. We derive quantum sheaf cohomology relations that correctly specialize to the …
