Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold, consider a small deformation $ϕ: \mathcal{X} \to B$ of $X$, the dimensions of the cohomology groups of tangent sheaf $H^q(X_t,\mathcal{T}_{X_t})$ may vary under this deformation. This paper will study such phenomenons by studying the obstructions to deform a class in $H^q(X,\mathcal{T}_X)$ with the parameter $t$ and get the formula for the obstructions.
We consider a locally free sheaf $F$ of dimension 2 on $P^2$. A conic $q$ on $P^2$ is called a jumping conic if the restriction of $F$ to $q$ is not the generic one. We prove that the set of jumping conics is the maximal determinantal variety of a skew form. Some properties of this skew form are found.
This is a survey of the current state of the theory of $F$--(super)manifolds $(M,\circ)$, first defined in [HeMa] and further developed in [He], [Ma2], [Me1]. Here $\circ$ is an $\Cal{O}_M$--bilinear multiplication on the tangent sheaf $\Cal{T}_M$, satisfying an integrability condition. $F$--manifolds and compatible flat structures on them furnish a useful weakening of Dubrovin's Frobenius structure which naturally arises in the quantum $K$--theory, theory of extended moduli spaces, and unfolding spaces of singularities.
The main goal of this paper is to prove the polystability of the logarithmic tangent sheaf $\mathscr T_X(-D)$ of a log canonical pair $(X,D)$ whose canonical bundle $K_X+D$ is ample, generalizing in a significant way a theorem of Enoki. We apply this result and the techniques involved in its proof to get a version of this theorem for stable varieties (the higher dimensional analogue of Deligne-Mumford's stable curves) and to prove the polystability with respect to any polarization of the tangent sheaf of a singular Calabi-Yau variety.
Let $\mathfrak a \subset \mathscr O_X$ be a coherent ideal sheaf on a normal complex variety $X$, and let $c \ge 0$ be a real number. De Fernex and Hacon associated a multiplier ideal sheaf to the pair $(X, \mathfrak a^c)$ which coincides with the usual notion whenever the canonical divisor $K_X$ is $\mathbb Q$-Cartier. We investigate the properties of the jumping numbers associated to these multiplier ideals. We show that the set of jumping numbers of a pair is unbounded, countable and satisfies a certain periodicity property. We then prove that the jumping numbers form a discrete set of real…
We study holomorphic foliations of aribitrary codimension in smooth complete toric varieties. We show that split foliations are stable if some good behaviour of their singular set is provided. As an application of these results, we exhibit irreducible components of the space of foliations that arise as pullbacks of some special T-invariant divisors.
In this paper, we will outline computations of quantum sheaf cohomology for deformations of tangent bundles of toric varieties, for those deformations describable as deformations of toric Euler sequences. Quantum sheaf cohomology is a heterotic analogue of quantum cohomology, a quantum deformation of the classical product on sheaf cohomology groups, that computes nonperturbative corrections to analogues of (27*)^3 couplings in heterotic string computations. Previous computations have relied on either physics-based GLSM techniques or computation-intensive brute-force Cech cohomology techniques.…
Let $S$ be a smooth projective variety and $Δ$ a simple normal crossing $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor with coefficients in $(0,1]$. For any ample $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundle $L$ over $S$, we denote by $\mathscr{E}(L)$ the extension sheaf of the orbifold tangent sheaf $T_S(-\log(Δ))$ by the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}_S$ with the extension class $c_1(L)$. We show the following two results: (i) If $-(K_S+Δ)$ is ample and $(S, Δ)$ is K-semistable, then for any $λ\in \mathbb{Q}_{>0}$, the extension sheaf $\mathscr{E}({λc_1(-(K_S+Δ))})$ is slope semistable with respect to $-(K_S+Δ)$; (ii) If $K_S+Δ\equiv 0$, …
We show that the set of singular holomorphic foliations of the projective spaces with split tangent sheaf and with good singular set is open in the space of holomorphic foliations. As applications we present a generalization of a result by Camacho-Lins Neto about linear pull-back foliations, we give a criterium for the rigidity of $\mathcal L$-foliations of codimension $k \ge 2$ and prove a conjecture by Cerveau-Deserti about the rigidity of a codimension one $\mathcal L$-foliation of $\mathbb P^4$. These results allow us to exhibit some previously unknown irreducible components of the spaces …
In this paper we aim at the description of foliations having tangent sheaf $T\mathcal F$ with $c_1(T\mathcal F)=c_2(T\mathcal F)=0$ on non-uniruled projective manifolds. We prove that the universal covering of the ambient manifold splits as a product, and that the Zariski closure of a general leaf of $\mathcal F$ is an Abelian variety. It turns out that the analytic type of the Zariski closures of leaves may vary from leaf to leaf. We discuss how this variation is related to arithmetic properties of the tangent sheaf of the foliation.
We investigate the holonomy group of singular Kähler-Einstein metrics on klt varieties with numerically trivial canonical divisor. Finiteness of the number of connected components, a Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors, and a connection between irreducibility of holonomy representations and stability of the tangent sheaf are established. As a consequence, known decompositions for tangent sheaves of varieties with trivial canonical divisor are refined. In particular, we show that up to finite quasi-étale covers, varieties with strongly stable tangent sheaf are either Calabi-Yau or irreduc…
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold and $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle on $X$. Given a deformation $(\mathcal{X},\mathcal{E})$ of the pair $(X,E)$ over a small polydisk $B$ centered at the origin, we study the jumping phenomenon of the cohomology groups $\dim_{\mathbb{C}}H^q(\mathcal{X}_t,\mathcal{E}_t)$ near $t = 0$. Generalizing previous results of X. Ye for the tangent bundle $E = T_{\mathcal{X}_t}$ and exterior powers of the cotangent bundle $E = Ω^p_{\mathcal{X}_t}$, we show that there are precisely two cohomological obstructions to the stability of $\dim_{\mathbb{C}}H^q(\mathcal{X}…
Let the vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ be a deformation of the tangent bundle over the Grassmannian $G(k,n)$. We compute the ring structure of sheaf cohomology valued in exterior powers of $\mathcal{E}$, also known as the polymology. This is the first part of a project studying the quantum sheaf cohomology of Grassmannians with deformations of the tangent bundle, a generalization of ordinary quantum cohomology rings of Grassmannians. A companion physics paper [arXiv:1512.08586] describes physical aspects of the theory, including a conjecture for the quantum sheaf cohomology ring, and numerous exa…
For a singular variety X, an essential step to determine its smoothability and study its deformations is the understanding of the tangent sheaf and of the sheaf T^1_X:=ext^1(Omega_X,O_X). A variety is semi-smooth if its singularities are étale locally the product of a double crossing point (uv=0) or a pinch point (u^2-v^2w=0) with affine space; equivalently, if it can be obtained by gluing a smooth variety along a smooth divisor via an involution with smooth quotient. Our main result is the explicit computation of the tangent sheaf and the sheaf T^1_X for a semi-smooth variety X in terms of th…
For a class of monadic deformations of the tangent bundles over nef-Fano smooth projective toric varieties, we study the correlators using quantum sheaf cohomology. We prove a summation formula for the correlators, confirming a conjecture by McOrist and Melnikov in physics literature. This generalizes the Szenes-Vergne proof of Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture for hypersurfaces.
For a $G$-variety $X$ with an open orbit, we define its boundary $\partial X$ as the complement of the open orbit. The action sheaf $S_X$ is the subsheaf of the tangent sheaf made of vector fields tangent to $\partial X$. We prove, for a large family of smooth spherical varieties, the vanishing of the cohomology groups $H^i(X,S_X)$ for $i>0$, extending results of F. Bien and M. Brion. We apply these results to study the local rigidity of the smooth projective varieties with Picard number one classified in a previous paper of the first author.
Let X be the quasi-projective symplectic surface that is given by the total space of the invertible sheaf O(-2) over the projective line. Let Hilb X be the family of Hilbert schemes of points on X. We give and prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the Hilb X in terms of the standard Fock space description of the cohomology of the Hilb X. As a side result, we also deduce a formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of the Hilb X. The results found here are another step towards a complete description of the tangent bundle of the Hilber…
By using the classification of Fano 3-folds we prove: Let $X$ be Fano 3-fold. Assume that the tangent bundle $T_X$ of $X$ is not stable (i.e. semi-stable or unstable). Then $b_2\geq 2$ and a relative tangent sheaf $T_{X/Y}$ of a contraction $f:X\longrightarrow Y$ of an extremal face on $X$ is a destabilising subsheaf of $T_X$.
We study the positivity of exterior powers of the tangent sheaf on toric varieties in order to generalize results by Campana and Peternell about 3-folds with nef second exterior power of the tangent bundle. Using the theory of equivariant vector bundles and the toric MMP, we establish in the smooth case a criterion for the positivity of $Λ^m\mathcal T_X$ in terms of wall relations. As an application, we classify smooth toric varieties of arbitrary dimension $n\ge3$ with $Λ^2\mathcal T_X$ nef and those of dimension $n\ge 4$ with $Λ^3\mathcal T_X$ ample.
We use the theory of twisted resolutions and twisted complexes to give a proof of Kontsevich's claim that Yoneda product corresponds to cup product in a canonical isomorphism from the Ext groups of the product space with coefficients in the diagonal sheaf to the cohomology with coefficients in exterior powers of the tangent sheaf.
The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical theory of the half-twisted $(0,2)$ gauged linear sigma model and its correlation functions that agrees with and extends results from physics. The theory is associated to a smooth projective toric variety $X$ and a deformation $\sheaf E$ of its tangent bundle $T_X$. It gives a quantum deformation of the cohomology ring of the exterior algebra of $\sheaf E^*$. We prove that in the general case, the correlation functions are independent of `nonlinear' deformations. We derive quantum sheaf cohomology relations that correctly specialize to the …
We study the quantum sheaf cohomology of flag manifolds with deformations of the tangent bundle and use the ring structure to derive how the deformation transforms under the biholomorphic duality of flag manifolds. Realized as the OPE ring of A/2-twisted two-dimensional theories with (0,2) supersymmetry, quantum sheaf cohomology generalizes the notion of quantum cohomology. Complete descriptions of quantum sheaf cohomology have been obtained for abelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) and for nonabelian GLSMs describing Grassmannians. In this paper we continue to explore the quantum sheaf c…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler space with klt singularities and vanishing first Chern class. We prove the Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors on the smooth locus of $X$: any such tensor is parallel with respect to the singular Ricci-flat metrics. As a consequence, after a finite quasi-étale cover $X$ splits off a complex torus of the maximum possible dimension. We then proceed to decompose the tangent sheaf of $X$ according to its holonomy representation. In particular, we classify those $X$ which have strongly stable tangent sheaf: up to quasi-étale covers, these are either irreducible Cal…
A co-Higgs sheaf is a pair of a torsion-free coherent sheaf $\mathcal{E}$ and a global section of $\mathcal{E}nd(\mathcal{E})\otimes T_X$ with $T_X$ the tangent bundle. We construct $2$-nilpotent co-Higgs sheaves of rank two for some rational surfaces and of rank three for $\mathbb{P}^3$, using the Hartshorne-Serre correspondence. Then we investigate the non-existence, specially over projective spaces.
Let $X/k$ be a noetherian scheme over a field $k$ of characteristic 0, such that the residue field at its closed points are algebraic extensions of $k$. Let ${\mathfrak g}_{X/k}\subset T_{X/k}$ be an ${\mathcal O}_{X}$-submodule of the tangent sheaf which is closed under the Lie bracket. We construct a stratification of the subset of closed points in $X$ by locally closed subsets that are preserved by ${\mathfrak g}_{X/k}$, on which ${\mathfrak g}_{X/k}$ acts transitively.
In analogy with the complex analytic case, Mustaţă constructed (a family of) Bernstein-Sato polynomials for the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}_X$ and a hypersurface $(f=0)$ in $X$, where $X$ is a regular variety over an $F$-finite field of positive characteristic (see arxiv:0711.3794). He shows that the suitably interpreted zeros of his Bernstein-Sato polynomials correspond to the jumping numbers of the test ideal filtration $τ(X,f^t)$. In the present paper we generalize Mustaţă's construction replacing $\mathcal{O}_X$ by an arbitrary $F$-regular Cartier module $M$ on $X$ and show an analogous c…
The purpose of this paper is to translate positivity properties of the tangent bundle (and the anti-canonical bundle) of an algebraic manifold into existence and movability properties of rational curves and to investigate the impact on the global geometry of the manifold $X$. Among the results we prove are these: \quad If $X$ is a projective manifold, and ${\cal E} \subset T_X$ is an ample locally free sheaf with $n-2\ge rk {\cal E}\ge n$, then $X \simeq \EP_n$. \quad Let $X$ be a projective manifold. If $X$ is rationally connected, then there exists a free $T_X$-ample family of (rational) cur…
Let $X$ be a normal complex space such that the tangent sheaf $T_X$ is locally free and locally admits a basis consisting of pairwise commuting vector fields. Then $X$ is smooth.
Let f : Y -> X be a morphism of complex projective manifolds, and let F be a subsheaf of the tangent bundle which is closed under the Lie bracket, but not necessarily a foliation. This short paper contains an elementary and very geometric argument to show that all obstructions to deforming the morphism f along the sheaf F lie in the first cohomology group H^1(Y, F_Y) of the sheaf F_Y, which is the image of f^*(F) in f^*(T_X) under the pull-back of the inclusion map. Special cases of this result include the theory of deformation along a (possibly singular) foliation, logarithmic deformation the…
For a toric variety X_P determined by a rational polyhedral fan P in a lattice N, Payne shows that the equivariant Chow cohomology of X_P is the Sym(N)--algebra C^0(P) of integral piecewise polynomial functions on P. We use the Cartan-Eilenberg spectral sequence to analyze the associated reflexive sheaf on Proj(N), showing that the Chern classes depend on subtle geometry of P and giving criteria for the splitting of the sheaf as a sum of line bundles. For certain fans associated to the reflection arrangement A_n, we describe a connection between C^0(P) and logarithmic vector fields tangent to …
In this paper we study the tangent spaces of the smooth nested Hilbert scheme $ Hil{n,n-1}$ of points in the plane, and give a general formula for computing the Euler characteristic of a $\TT^2$-equivariant locally free sheaf on $\Hil{n,n-1}$. Applying our result to a particular sheaf, we conjecture that the result is a polynomial in the variables $q$ and $t$ with non-negative integer coefficients . We call this conjecturally positive polynomial as \textsl{the nested $q,t$-Cat alan series}, for it has many conjectural properties similar to that of the $q,t $-Catalan series.
We prove the Lipman-Zariski conjecture for complex surface singularities of genus one, and also for those of genus two whose link is not a rational homology sphere. As an application, we characterize complex $2$-tori as the only normal compact complex surfaces whose smooth locus has trivial tangent bundle. We also deduce that all complex-projective surfaces with locally free and generically nef tangent sheaf are smooth, and we classify them.
For a smooth subvariety $X\subset\Bbb P^N$, consider (analogously to projective normality) the vanishing condition $H^1(\Bbb P^N,\Cal I^2_X(k))=0$, $k\ge3$. This condition is shown to be satisfied for all sufficiently large embeddings of a given $X$, and for a Veronese embedding of $\Bbb P^n$. For $C\subset\Bbb P^{g-1}$, the canonical embedding of a non-hyperelliptic curve, this condition guarantees the vanishing of some obstruction groups to deformations of the cone. Recall that the tangents to deformations are dual to the cokernel of the Gaussian-Wahl map. \proclaim{Theorem} Suppose the Gaus…
Let Y be a compact reduced subspace of a complex manifold X, and let F be a subsheaf of the tangent bundle T_X which is closed under the Lie bracket. This paper discusses criteria to guarantee that infinitesimal deformations of the inclusion morphism Y -> X give rise to positive-dimensional deformation families, deforming the inclusion map "along the sheaf F". In case where X is complex-symplectic and F is the sheaf of Hamiltonian vector fields, this partially reproduces known results on unobstructedness of deformations of Lagrangian submanifolds. Written for the IMPANGA Lecture Notes series, …
Let $X$ be a normal compact Kähler space with klt singularities and torsion canonical bundle. We show that $X$ admits arbitrarily small deformations that are projective varieties if its locally trivial deformation space is smooth. We then prove that this unobstructedness assumption holds in at least three cases: if $X$ has toroidal singularities, if $X$ has finite quotient singularities, and if the second cohomology group of its tangent sheaf vanishes.
While the tangent space to an equisingular family of curves can be discribed by the sections of a twisted ideal sheaf, this is no longer true if we only prescribe the multiplicity which a singular point should have. However, it is still possible to compute the dimension of the tangent space with the aid of the equimulitplicity ideal. In this note we consider families L_m={(C,p) | mult_p(C)=m} with C in some linear system |L| on a smooth projective surface S and for a fixed positive integer m, and we compute the dimension of the tangent space to L_m at a point (C,p) depending on whether p is a …
We use the Thom-Whitney construction to show that infinitesimal deformations of a coherent sheaf F are controlled by the differential graded Lie algebra of global sections of an acyclic resolution of the sheaf End(E), where E is any locally free resolution of F. In particular, one recovers the well known fact that the tangent space to deformations of F is Ext^1(F,F), and obstructions are contained in Ext^2(F,F). The main tool is the identification of the deformation functor associated with the Thom-Whitney DGLA of a semicosimplicial DGLA whose cohomology is concentrated in nonnegative degrees …
We prove the Lipman-Zariski conjecture for complex surface singularities with $p_g - g - b \le 2$. Here $p_g$ is the geometric genus, $g$ is the sum of the genera of the exceptional curves and $b$ is the first Betti number of the dual graph. This improves on a previous result of the second author. As an application, we show that a compact complex surface with locally free tangent sheaf is smooth as soon as it admits two generically linearly independent twisted vector fields and its canonical sheaf has at most two global sections.
This paper is a sequel to math.AG/9803041. It consists of three parts. In the first part we give certain construction of vertex algebras which includes in particular the ones appearing in op. cit. In the second part we show how the cohomology ring $H^*(X)$ of a smooth complex variety $X$ could be restored from the correlation functions of the vertex algebra $RΓ(X;Ω^{ch}_X)$. In the third part, we prove first a useful general statement that the sheaf of loop algebras over the tangent sheaf $\Cal{T}_X$ acts naturally on $Ω^{ch}_X$ for every smooth $X$ (see §1). The Z-graded vertex algebra $H^*(X…
A construction of the tangent dg Lie algebra of a sheaf of operad algebras on a site is presented. The requirements on the site are very mild; the requirements on the algebra are more substantial. A few applications including the description of deformatins of a scheme and equivariant deformations are considered. The construction is based upon a model structure on the category of presheaves which should be of an independent interest.
Frobenius manifold structures on the spaces of abelian integrals were constructed by I. Krichever. We use D-modules, deformation theory, and homological algebra to give a coordinate-free description of these structures. It turns out that the tangent sheaf multiplication has a cohomological origin, while the Levi-Civita connection is related to 1-dimensional isomonodromic deformations.
If V is a bundle of Tate vector spaces over a base B, its determinantal gerbe has a class C_1(V) in the second cohomology group of the sheaf of invertible functions which can be seen as the Deligne cohomology H^3(B, Z(2)). An example of such a "Tate bundle" can be obtained from a finite rank vector bundle E on the product of B and a punctured formal disk. Our main result identifies the corresponding C_1(V) with the cohomological direct image of ch_2(E), the second Chern character of E. It can be seen as a "local" version of the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem for a family of curves. This the…
We apply the known results on the Galois module structure of the sheaf of polydifferentials in order to study the dimension of the tangent space of the deformation functor of curves with automorphisms. We are able to find the dimension for the case of weakly ramified covers and for the case of the action of a cyclic group of order $p^v$.
Let $X$ be a normal projective algebraic variety, $G$ its largest connected automorphism group, and $A(G)$ the Albanese variety of $G$. We determine the isogeny class of $A(G)$ in terms of the geometry of $X$. In characteristic 0, we show that the dimension of $A(G)$ is the rank of every maximal trivial direct summand of the tangent sheaf of $X$. Also, we obtain an optimal bound for the dimension of the largest anti-affine closed subgroup of $G$ (which is the smallest closed subgroup that maps onto $A(G)$).
