Given a monotone Lagrangian $L$ in a compact symplectic manifold $X$, we construct a commutative diagram relating the closed-open string map $\mathcal{CO}_λ\colon \operatorname{QH}^*(X) \to \operatorname{HH}^*(\mathcal{F} (X)_λ)$ to a variant of the length-zero closed-open map on $L$ incorporating $\mathbf{k}[\operatorname{H}_1(L; \mathbb{Z})]$ coefficients, denoted $\mathcal{CO}^0_\mathbf{L}$. The former is categorically important but very difficult to compute, whilst the latter is geometrically natural and amenable to calculation. We further show that, after a suitable completion, injectivity of $\mathcal{CO}^0_\mathbf{L}$ implies injectivity of $\mathcal{CO}_λ$. Via Sheridan's version of Abouzaid's generation criterion, this gives a powerful tool for proving split-generation of the Fukaya category. We illustrate this by showing that the real part of a monotone toric manifold (of minimal Chern number at least 2) split-generates the Fukaya category in characteristic 2. We also give a short new proof (modulo foundational assumptions in the non-monotone case) that the Fukaya category of an arbitrary compact toric manifold is split-generated by toric fibres.
We study Lagrangian correspondences between Liouville manifolds and construct functors between wrapped Fukaya categories. The study naturally brings up the question on comparing two versions of wrapped Fukaya categories of the product manifold, which we prove quasi-isomorphism on the level of wrapped Floer cohomology. To prove representability of these functors constructed from Lagrangian correspondences, we introduce the geometric compositions of Lagrangian correspondences under wrapping, as new classes of objects in the wrapped Fukaya category, which we prove to represent the functors by est…
We outline an interpretation of Heegaard-Floer homology of 3-manifolds (closed or with boundary) in terms of the symplectic topology of symmetric products of Riemann surfaces, as suggested by recent work of Tim Perutz and Yanki Lekili. In particular we discuss the connection between the Fukaya category of the symmetric product and the bordered algebra introduced by Robert Lipshitz, Peter Ozsvath and Dylan Thurston, and recast bordered Heegaard-Floer homology in this language.
The main goal of this paper is to discuss a symplectic interpretation of Lipshitz, Ozsvath and Thurston's bordered Heegaard-Floer homology in terms of Fukaya categories of symmetric products and Lagrangian correspondences. More specifically, we give a description of the algebra A(F) which appears in the work of Lipshitz, Ozsvath and Thurston in terms of (partially wrapped) Floer homology for product Lagrangians in the symmetric product, and outline how bordered Heegaard-Floer homology itself can conjecturally be understood in this language.
Floer cohomology groups are usually defined over a field of formal functions (a Novikov field). Under certain assumptions, one can equip them with connections, which means operations of differentiation with respect to the Novikov variable. This allows one to write differential equations for Floer cohomology classes. Here, we apply that idea to symplectic cohomology groups associated to Lefschetz fibrations, and obtain a relation with enumerative geometry.
We construct partial category-valued field theories in (2+1)-dimensions using Lagrangian Floer theory in moduli spaces of central-curvature unitary connections with fixed determinant of rank r and degree d where r,d are coprime positive integers. These theories associate to a closed, connected, oriented surface the Fukaya category of the moduli space, and to a connected bordism between two surfaces a functor between the Fukaya categories. We obtain the latter by combining Cerf theory with holomorphic quilt invariants.
We construct finite group actions on Lagrangian Floer theory when symplectic manifolds have finite group actions and Lagrangian submanifolds have induced group actions. We first define finite group actions on Novikov-Morse theory. We introduce the notion of a {\em spin profile} as an obstruction class of extending the group action on Lagrangian submanifold to the one on its spin structure, which is a group cohomology class in $H^2(G;\Z/2)$. For a class of Lagrangian submanifolds which have the same spin profiles, we define a finite group action on their Fukaya category. In consequence, we obta…
We study wrapped Floer theory on product Liouville manifolds and prove that the wrapped Fukaya categories defined with respect to two different kinds of natural Hamiltonians and almost complex structures are equivalent. The implication is we can do quilted version of wrapped Floer theory, based on which we then construct functors between wrapped Fukaya categories of Liouville manifolds from certain classes of Lagrangian correspondences, by enlarging the wrapped Fukaya categories appropriately, allowing exact cylindrical Lagrangian immersions. For applications, we present a general Künneth form…
There is a classical relationship in algebraic geometry between a hyperelliptic curve and an associated pencil of quadric hypersurfaces. We investigate symplectic aspects of this relationship, with a view to applications in low-dimensional topology. We construct a derived equivalence between the Fukaya category of a curve and the nilpotent summand of the Fukaya category of the associated complete intersection of two quadrics. This essentially determines the instanton Floer homology of a 3-manifold fibred by genus two curves.
We consider Hamiltonian Floer cohomology groups associated to a Lefschetz fibration, and the structure of operations on them. As an application, we will (under an important additional assumption) equip those groups with connections, which differentiate with respect to the Novikov variable.
This paper is a companion to the authors' forthcoming work extending Heegaard Floer theory from closed 3-manifolds to compact 3-manifolds with two boundary components via quilted Floer cohomology. We describe the first interesting case of this theory: the invariants of 3-manifolds bounding S^2 union T^2, regarded as modules over the Fukaya category of the punctured 2-torus. We extract a short proof of exactness of the Dehn surgery triangle in Heegaard Floer homology. We show that A-infinity structures on the graded algebra A formed by the cohomology of two basic objects in the Fukaya category …
We consider the Fukaya category associated to a basis of vanishing cycles in a Lefschetz fibration. We show that each element of the Floer cohomology of the monodromy around infinity gives rise to a natural transformation from the Serre functor to the identity functor. This complements previously known constructions, in a way which fits in well with homological mirror symmetry.
Categorical symplectic geometry is the study of a rich collection of invariants of symplectic manifolds, including the Fukaya $A_\infty$-category, Floer cohomology, and symplectic cohomology. Beginning with work of Wehrheim and Woodward in the late 2000s, several authors have developed techniques for functorial manipulation of these invariants. We survey these functorial structures, including Wehrheim-Woodward's quilted Floer cohomology and functors associated to Lagrangian correspondences, Fukaya's alternate approach to defining functors between Fukaya $A_\infty$-categories, and the second au…
This paper constructs and studies the Rabinowitz (wrapped) Fukaya category, a categorical invariant of exact cylindrical Lagrangians in a Liouville manifold whose cohomological morphisms, ``Rabinowitz wrapped Floer homology groups" measure the failure of wrapped Floer cohomology to satisfy Poincare duality (and in particular vanish for any pair with at least one compact Lagrangian). Our main result, answering a conjecture of Abouzaid, relates the Rabinowitz and usual wrapped Fukaya category by way of a general construction introduced by Efimov, the categorical formal punctured neighborhood of …
In all known explicit computations on Weinstein manifolds, the self-wrapped Floer homology of non-compact exact Lagrangian is always either infinite-dimensional or zero. We show that a global variant of this observed phenomenon holds in broad generality: the wrapped Fukaya category of any positive-dimensional Weinstein (or non-degenerate Liouville) manifold is always either non-proper or zero, as is any quotient thereof. Moreover any non-compact connected exact Lagrangian is always either a "(both left and right) non-proper object" or zero in such a wrapped Fukaya category, as is any idempoten…
We build the wrapped Fukaya category W(E) for any monotone symplectic manifold, convex at infinity. We define the open-closed and closed open-string maps. We study their algebraic properties and prove that the string maps are compatible with the eigenvalue splitting of W(E). We extend Abouzaid's generation criterion from the exact to the monotone setting. We construct an acceleration functor from the compact Fukaya category which on Hochschild (co)homology commutes with the string maps and the canonical map from quantum cohomology QH(E) to symplectic cohomology SH(E). We define the QH(E)- and …
Ideas of Fukaya and Kontsevich-Soibelman suggest that one can use Strominger-Yau-Zaslow's geometric approach to mirror symmetry as a torus duality to construct the mirror of a symplectic manifold equipped with a Lagrangian torus fibration as a moduli space of simple objects of the Fukaya category supported on the fibres. In the absence of singular fibres, the construction of the mirror is explained in this framework, and, given a Lagrangian submanifold, a (twisted) coherent sheaf on the mirror is constructed.
Inspired by Segal-Stolz-Teichner project for geometric construction of elliptic (tmf) cohomology, and ideas of Floer theory and of Hopkins-Lurie on extended TFT's, we geometrically construct some $Ring$-valued representable cofunctors on the homotopy category of topological spaces. Using a classical computation in Gromov-Witten theory due to Seidel we show that for one version of these cofunctors $π_{2}$ of the representing space is non trivial, provided a certain categorical extension of Kontsevich conjecture holds for the symplectic manifold $ \mathbb{CP} ^{n}$, for some some $n \geq 1$. Thi…
This article introduces and provides the mathematical foundation of the open string Floer theory of Landau-Ginzburg model viaWitten equation. We introduce the concept of regular tame exact Landau-Ginzburg system on a noncompact Kaehler manifold, and define the notion of Landau-Ginzburg branes, as the objects of the Fukaya category. The study on Witten equation in our context provides the construction of the Fukaya category of Landau-Ginzburg model which was conjectured to be existed in Gaiotto-Moore-Witten's work [22] and Kapranov-Kontsevich-Soibelman's work [30]. This is the first paper in th…
We investigate the small area limit of the gauged Lagrangian Floer cohomology of Frauenfelder. The resulting cohomology theory, which we call quasimap Floer cohomology, is an obstruction to displaceability of Lagrangians in the symplectic quotient. We use the theory to reproduce the results of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono and Cho-Oh on non-displaceability of moment fibers of not-necessarily-Fano toric varieties and extend their results to toric orbifolds, without virtual fundamental chains. Finally we describe a conjectural relationship to Floer cohomology in the quotient.
We introduce an $A_\infty$ map from the cubical chain complex of the based loop space of Lagrangian submanifolds with Legendrian boundary in a Liouville Manifold $C_{*}(Ω_{L} \mathcal{L}\mathit{ag})$ to wrapped Floer cohomology of Lagrangian submanifold $\mathcal{CW}^{-*}(L,L)$. In the case of a cotangent bundle and a Lagrangian co-fiber, the composition of our map with a previously constructed map from $\mathcal{CW}^*(L,L) \to C_{*}(Ω_q Q) $ shows that this map is split surjective.
We prove that every spherical object in the derived Fukaya category of a closed surface of genus at least two whose Chern character represents a non-zero Hochschild homology class is quasi-isomorphic to a simple closed curve equipped with a rank one local system. (The homological hypothesis is necessary.) This largely answers a question of Haiden, Katzarkov and Kontsevich. It follows that there is a natural surjection from the autoequivalence group of the Fukaya category to the mapping class group. The proofs appeal to and illustrate numerous recent developments: quiver algebra models for wrap…
We study symplectic invariants of the open symplectic manifolds $X_Γ$ obtained by plumbing cotangent bundles of 2-spheres according to a plumbing tree $Γ$. For any tree $Γ$, we calculate (DG-)algebra models of the Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X_Γ)$ of closed exact Lagrangians in $X_Γ$ and the wrapped Fukaya category $\mathcal{W}(X_Γ)$. When $Γ$ is a Dynkin tree of type $A_n$ or $D_n$ (and conjecturally also for $E_6,E_7,E_8$), we prove that these models for the Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X_Γ)$ and $\mathcal{W}(X_Γ)$ are related by (derived) Koszul duality. As an application, we give explicit…
We introduce a class of Liouville manifolds with boundary which we call Liouville sectors. We define the wrapped Fukaya category, symplectic cohomology, and the open-closed map for Liouville sectors, and we show that these invariants are covariantly functorial with respect to inclusions of Liouville sectors. From this foundational setup, a local-to-global principle for Abouzaid's generation criterion follows.
A symplectic manifold gives rise to a triangulated A-infinity category, the derived Fukaya category, which encodes information on Lagrangian submanifolds and dynamics as probed by Floer cohomology. This survey aims to give some insight into what the Fukaya category is, where it comes from and what symplectic topologists want to do with it.
Let $(M,ω_M)$ be a monotone or negatively monotone symplectic manifold, or a Weinstein manifold. One can construct an "action" of $H^1(M,\mathbb{G}_m)$ on the Fukaya category (wrapped Fukaya category in the exact case) that reflects the action of $Symp^0(M,ω_M)$ on the set of Lagrangian branes. A priori this action is only analytic. The purpose of this work is to show the algebraicity of this action under some assumptions. We use this to prove a tameness result for the sheaf of Lagrangian Floer homology groups obtained by moving one of the Lagrangians via global symplectic isotopies. We also s…
We show that blow-ups or reverse flips (in the sense of the minimal model program) of rational symplectic manifolds with point centers create Floer-non-trivial Lagrangian tori. As applications, we demonstrate the existence of Hamiltonian non-displaceable Lagrangian tori in, for example, small symplectic blow-ups of compact symplectic manifolds and moduli spaces of polygons. These results are part of a conjectural description of generators for the Fukaya category of a compact symplectic manifold with a singularity-free running of the minimal model program.
Given a compact Lagrangian submanifold $L$ of a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, Fukaya, Oh, Ohta and Ono construct a filtered $A_\infty$-algebra $\mathcal{F}(L)$, on the cohomology of $L$, which we call the Fukaya algebra of $L$. In this paper we describe the Fukaya algebra of a product of two Lagrangians submanifolds $L_1\times L_2$. Namely, we show that $\mathcal{F}(L_1\times L_2)$ is quasi-isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}(L_1)\otimes_\infty \mathcal{F}(L_2)$, where $\otimes_\infty$ is the tensor product of filtered $A_\infty$-algebras defined in arXiv:1404.7184. As a corollary of this quasi-isomorph…
For a stopped Liouville manifold arising from a Liouville sector, we construct a symplectic analogue of the formal neighborhood of the stop on the level of Fukaya categories. This geometric construction is performed via Floer-theoretic methods by allowing wrappings in the negative direction. On the other hand, inspired by homological mirror symmetry for pairs, where the mirror is the formal neighborhood of a divisor in an ambient projective variety, there is a different approach by taking a `categorical formal completion' introduced by Efimov. Our main results establishes equivalence of these …
We introduce the wrapped Donaldson-Fukaya category of a (generalized) semi-toric SYZ fibration with Lagrangian section satisfying a tameness condition at infinity. Examples include the Gross fibration on the complement of an anti-canonical divisor in a toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We compute the wrapped Floer cohomology of a Lagrangian section and find that it is the algebra of functions on the Hori-Vafa mirror. The latter result is the key step in proving homological mirror symmetry for this case. The techniques developed here allow the construction in general of the wrapped Fukaya category on an…
We prove that a pairing between the Fukaya category and the oo-category of Lagrangian cobordisms respects mapping cones. This is another step toward constructing a lift of Fukaya categories to the level of spectra (in the sense of stable homotopy theory). As corollaries, we show that the map in our previous work from cobordism groups to Floer cohomology lifts to the level of spectra, and one also recovers some results of Biran and Cornea for what we call "vertically collared" cobordisms.
Consider the wrapped Fukaya category W of a collection of exact Lagrangians in a Liouville manifold. Under a non-degeneracy condition implying the existence of enough Lagrangians, we show that natural geometric maps from the Hochschild homology of W to symplectic cohomology and from symplectic cohomology to the Hochschild cohomology of W are isomorphisms, in a manner compatible with ring and module structures. This is a consequence of a more general duality for the wrapped Fukaya category, which should be thought of as a non-compact version of a Calabi-Yau structure. The new ingredients are: (…
Given a collection of exact Lagrangians in a Liouville manifold, we construct a map from the Hochschild homology of the Fukaya category that they generate to symplectic cohomology. Whenever the identity in symplectic cohomology lies in the image of this map, we conclude that every Lagrangian lies in the idempotent closure of the chosen collection. The main new ingredients are (1) the construction of operations controlled by discs with two outputs on the Fukaya category, and (2) the Cardy relation.
Family Floer theory yields a functor from the Fukaya category of a symplectic manifold admitting a Lagrangian torus fibration to a (twisted) category of perfect complexes on the mirror rigid analytic space. This functor is shown to be faithful by a degeneration argument involving moduli spaces of annuli.
This is an informal (and mostly conjectural) discussion of some aspects of Fukaya categories. We start by looking at exact symplectic manifolds which are obtained from a closed Calabi-Yau by removing a hyperplane section. We look at the possible geometric significance of Hochschild cohomology in this situation, and how one can try to get from the Fukaya category of the exact manifold to that of the closed Calabi-Yau. Also included is a brief discussion of the role of Lefschetz pencils, and a bit of general deformation theory. To appear in the Proceedings of the Beijing ICM.
Floer theory for Lagrangian cobordisms was developed by Biran and Cornea to study the triangulated structure of the derived Fukaya category of monotone symplectic manifolds. This paper explains how to use the language of stops to study Lagrangian cobordisms in Liouville manifolds and the associated exact triangles in the derived wrapped Fukaya category. Furthermore, we compute the cobordism groups of non-compact Riemann surfaces of finite type.
Let A be a dg algebra over F_2 and let M be a dg A-bimodule. We show that under certain technical hypotheses on A, a noncommutative analog of the Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence starts at the Hochschild homology of the derived tensor product of M with itself and converges to the Hochschild homology of M. We apply this result to bordered Heegaard Floer theory, giving spectral sequences associated to Heegaard Floer homology groups of certain branched and unbranched double covers.
Given an exact relatively Pin Lagrangian embedding Q in a symplectic manifold M, we construct an A-infinity restriction functor from the wrapped Fukaya category of M to the category of modules on the differential graded algebra of chains over the based loop space of Q. If M is the cotangent bundle of Q, this functor induces an A-infinity equivalence between the wrapped Floer cohomology of a cotangent fibre and the chains over the based loop space of Q, extending a result proved by Abbondandolo and Schwarz at the level of homology.
We prove that the algebra of singular cochains on a smooth manifold, equipped with the cup product, is equivalent to the A-infinity structure on the Lagrangian Floer cochain group associated to the zero section in the cotangent bundle. More generally, given a pair of smooth manifolds of the same dimension with embeddings of a submanifold B with isomorphic normal bundles, we construct a differential graded category from the singular cochains of these spaces, and prove that it is equivalent to the A-infinity category obtained by considering exact Lagrangian embeddings intersecting cleanly along …
Fixing a weakly unobstructed Lagrangian torus in a symplectic manifold X, we define a holomorphic function W known as the Floer potential. We construct a canonical A-infinity functor from the Fukaya category of X to the category of matrix factorizations of W. It provides a unified way to construct matrix factorizations from Lagrangian Floer theory. The technique is applied to toric Fano manifolds to transform Lagrangian branes to matrix factorizations. Using the method, we also obtain an explicit expression of the matrix factorization mirror to the real locus of the complex projective space.
