We study the boundary stabilization of one-dimensional cross-diffusion systems in a moving domain. We show first exponential stabilization and then finite-time stabilization in arbitrary small-time of the linearized system around uniform equilibria, provided the system has an entropic structure with a symmetric mobility matrix. One example of such systems are the equations describing a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process. This stabilization is achieved with respect to both the volume fractions and the thickness of the domain. The feedback control is derived using the backstepping technique, adapted to the context of a time-dependent domain. In particular, the norm of the backward backstepping transform is carefully estimated with respect to time.
In this work we study the controllability and stabilization of the linearized Benjamin equation which models the unidirectional propagation of long waves in a two-fluid system where the lower fluid with greater density is infinitely deep and the interface is subject to capillarity. We show that the linearized Benjamin equation with periodic boundary conditions is exactly controllable and exponentially stabilizable with any given decay rate in $H_{p}^{s}(\mathbb{T})$ with $s\geq0$.
In this paper, we solve the problem of exponential stabilization for a class of cascade ODE-PDE system governed by a linear ordinary differential equation and a 1-d linearized Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) posed on a bounded interval. The control for the entire system acts on the left boundary with Dirichlet condition of the KdV equation whereas the KdV acts in the linear ODE by a Dirichlet connection. We use the socalled backstepping design in infinite dimension to convert the system under consideration into an exponentially stable cascade ODE-PDE system. Then, we use the invertibility of s…
We consider the one dimensional Schrödinger equation with a bilinear control and prove the rapid stabilization of the linearized equation around the ground state. The feedback law ensuring the rapid stabilization is obtained using a transformation mapping the solution to the linearized equation on the solution to an exponentially stable target linear equation. A suitable condition is imposed on the transformation in order to cancel the non-local terms arising in the kernel system. This conditions also insures the uniqueness of the transformation. The continuity and invertibility of the transfo…
In this work, we use the classical moment method to find a practical and simple criterion to determine if a family of linearized Dispersive equations on a periodic domain is exactly controllable and exponentially stabilizable with any given decay rate in $H^{s}_{p}(\mathbb{T})$ with $s\in \mathbb{R}$. We apply these results to prove that the linearized Smith equation, the linearized dispersion-generalized Benjamin-Ono equation, the linearized fourth-order Schrödinger equation, and the Higher-order Schrödinger equations are exactly controllable and exponentially stabilizable with any given deca…
In this paper, we consider the stabilization of wave equations with moving boundary. First, we show the solution behaviour of wave equation with Neumann boundary conditions, that is, the energy of wave equation with mixed boundary conditions may decrease, increase or conserve depending on the different range of parameter. Second, we prove the wellposedness and stabilization for the wave equation with time delay and moving boundary.
Fredholm-type backstepping transformation, introduced by Coron and Lü, has become a powerful tool for rapid stabilization with fast development over the last decade. Its strength lies in its systematic approach, allowing to deduce rapid stabilization from approximate controllability. But limitations with the current approach exist for operators of the form $|D_x|^α$ for $α\in (1,3/2]$. We present here a new compactness/duality method which hinges on Fredholm's alternative to overcome the $α=3/2$ threshold. More precisely, the compactness/duality method allows to prove the existence of a Riesz …
This paper is the first part of a work which consists in proving the stabilization to zero of a fluid-solid system, in dimension 2 and 3. The considered system couples a deformable solid and a viscous incompressible fluid which satisfies the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. By deforming itself, the solid can interact with the environing fluid and then move itself. The control function represents nothing else than the deformation of the solid in its own frame of reference. We there prove that the velocities of the linearized system are stabilizable to zero with an arbitrary exponential d…
In this article we study the so-called water tank system. In this system, the behavior of water contained in a 1-D tank is modelled by Saint-Venant equations, with a scalar distributed control. It is well-known that the linearized systems around uniform steady-states are not controllable, the uncontrollable part being of infinite dimension. Here we will focus on the linearized systems around non-uniform steady states, corresponding to a constant acceleration of the tank. We prove that these systems are controllable in Sobolev spaces, using the moments method and perturbative spectral estimates…
This work represents a first contribution on the problem of boundary stabilization for the phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type, which models the phase separation in a binary mixture. The feedback controller we design here is with actuation only on the temperature flow of the system, on one part of the boundary only. Moreover, it is of proportional type, given in an explicit form, expressed only in terms of the eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator, being easy to manipulate from the computational point of view. Furthermore, it ensures that the closed loop nonlinear system exponentially re…
Initial-boundary value problems for the 2D Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation posed on bounded rectangles and on a strip are considered. Spectral properties of a linearized operator and critical sizes of domains are studied. Exponential decay of regular solutions for the original nonlinear problems is proved.
In this paper, we prove the output feedback stabilization for the linearized Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation posed on a finite domain in the case the full state of the system cannot be measured. We assume that there is a sensor at the left end point of the domain capable of measuring the first and second order boundary traces of the solution. This allows us to design a suitable observer system whose states can be used for constructing boundary feedbacks acting at the right endpoint so that both the observer and the original plant become exponentially stable. Stabilization of the original syst…
We consider the stabilizability of a fluid-structure interaction system where the fluid is viscous and compressible and the structure is a rigid ball. The feedback control of the system acts on the ball and corresponds to a force that would be produced by a spring and a damper connecting the center of the ball to a fixed point $h_1$. We prove the global-in-time existence of strong solutions for the corresponding system under a smallness condition on the initial velocities and on the distance between the initial position of the center of the ball and $h_1$. Then, we show with our feedback law, …
We consider the Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain with a smooth boundary. Given a sufficiently regular time-dependent global solution, we construct a finite-dimensional feedback control that is supported by a given open set and stabilizes the linearized equation. The proof of this fact is based on a truncated observability inequality, the regularizing property for the linearized equation, and some standard techniques of the optimal control theory. We then show that the control constructed for the linear problem stabilizes locally also the full Navier-Stokes system.
We consider the strong stabilization of small amplitude gravity water waves in a two dimensional rectangular domain. The control acts on one lateral boundary, by imposing the horizontal acceleration of the water along that boundary, as a multiple of a scalar input function $u$, times a given function $h$ of the height along the active boundary. The state $z$ of the system consists of two functions: the water level $ζ$ along the top boundary, and its time derivative $\dotζ$. We prove that for suitable functions $h$, there exists a bounded feedback functional $F$ such that the feedback $u=Fz$ re…
We study the exponential stabilization problem for a nonlinear Korteweg-de Vries equa- tion on bounded interval in cases where the linearized control system is not controllable. The system has Dirichlet boundary conditions at the end-points of the interval, a Neumann nonhomogeneous boundary condition at the right end-point which is the control. We build a class of time-varying feedback laws for which the solutions of the closed-loop systems with small initial data decay exponentially to 0. We present also results on the well-posedness of the closed-loop systems for general time-varying feedbac…
We consider the finite-time stabilization of homogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with one side controls and with nonlinear boundary condition at the other side. We present time-independent feedbacks leading to the finite-time stabilization in any time larger than the optimal time for the null controllability of the linearized system if the initial condition is sufficiently small. One of the key technical points is to establish the local well-posedness of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear, non-local boundary conditions.
It was proved by Linares and Ortega that the linearized Benjamin-Ono equation posed on a periodic domain T with a distributed control supported on an arbitrary subdomain is exactly controllable and exponentially stabilizable. The aim of this paper is to extend those results to the full Benjamin-Ono equation. A feedback law in the form of a localized damping is incorporated in the equation. A smoothing effect established with the aid of a propagation of regularity property is used to prove the semi-global stabilization in L^2(T) of weak solutions obtained by the method of vanishing viscosity. T…
In this second part we prove that the full nonlinear fluid-solid system introduced in Part I is stabilizable by deformations of the solid that have to satisfy nonlinear constraints. Some of these constraints are physical and guarantee the self-propelled nature of the solid. The proof is based on the boundary feedback stabilization of the linearized system. From this boundary feedback operator we construct a deformation of the solid which satisfies the aforementioned constraints and which stabilizes the nonlinear system. The proof is made by a fixed point method.
This paper studies the global feedback stabilization problem of a system with two pistons and the area between them containing a viscous compressible fluid (gas) modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations. The control input is the force applied on the left piston (boundary input) and the overall system consists of two nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and four nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations. Global feedback stabilizers are designed for the overall system by means of the Control Lyapunov Functional methodology. The closed-loop system exhibits global asymptotic stability with an ex…
The Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson (JMGT)\cite{christov_heat_2005,jordan_nonlinear_2008,straughan_heat_2014} equation is a benchmark model describing propagation of nonlinear acoustic waves in heterogeneous fluids at rest. This is a third-order (in time) dynamics which accounts for a finite speed of propagation of heat signals (see \cite{coulouvrat_equations_1992,crighton_model_1979,jordan_nonlinear_2008,jordan_second-sound_2014,kaltenbacher_jordan-moore-gibson-thompson_2019}). In this paper, we study a boundary stabilization of linearized version (also known as MGT-equation) in the {\it critica…

In this paper local exact controllability to the trajectories for the one-dimensional monodomain equations with the FitzHugh-Nagumo and Rogers-McCulloch ionic models using distributed controls with a moving support is investigated. In a first step a new Carleman inequality for the adjoint of the linearized monodomain equations, under assumptions on the movement of the control region, is presented. It leads to null controllability at any positive time. Subsequently, a local result concerning the exact controllability to the trajectories for the nonlinear monodomain equations is deduced.
We develop reinforcement learning (RL) boundary controllers to mitigate stop-and-go traffic congestion on a freeway segment. The traffic dynamics of the freeway segment are governed by a macroscopic Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) model, consisting of $2\times 2$ quasi-linear partial differential equations (PDEs) for traffic density and velocity. Boundary stabilization of the linearized ARZ PDE model has been solved by PDE backstepping, guaranteeing spatial $L^2$ norm regulation of the traffic state to uniform density and velocity and ensuring that traffic oscillations are suppressed. Collocated Proport…
The present paper provides a solution in the affirmative to a recognized open problem in the theory of uniform stabilization of 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the vicinity of an unstable equilibrium solution, by means of a `minimal' and `least' invasive feedback strategy which consists of a control pair $\{ v,u \}$ \cite{LT2:2015}. Here $v$ is a tangential boundary feedback control, acting on an arbitrary small part $\widetildeΓ$ of the boundary $Γ$; while $u$ is a localized, interior feedback control, acting tangentially on an arbitrarily small subset $ω$ of the interior supported b…
In this paper, we prove the local-controllability to positive constant trajectories of a nonlinear system of two coupled ODE equations, posed in the one-dimensional spatial setting, with nonlocal spatial nonlinearites, and using only one localized control with a moving support. The model we deal with is derived from the well-known nonlinear reaction-diffusion Gray-Scott model when the diffusion coefficient of the first chemical species $d_u$ tends to $0$ and the diffusion coefficient of the second chemical species ${d_v}$ tends to $+ \infty$. The strategy of the proof consists in two main step…
We study well-posedness, stabilization and control problems involving freely vibrating beams that may undergo motions of large magnitude -- i.e. large displacements of the reference line and large rotations of the cross sections. Such beams, shearable and very flexible, are often called geometrically exact beams and are especially needed in modern highly flexible light-weight structures, where one cannot neglect these large motions. We view these beams from two perspectives. The first perspective is one in which the beam is described in terms of the position of its reference line and the orien…
