We consider the strong stabilization of small amplitude gravity water waves in a two dimensional rectangular domain. The control acts on one lateral boundary, by imposing the horizontal acceleration of the water along that boundary, as a multiple of a scalar input function $u$, times a given function $h$ of the height along the active boundary. The state $z$ of the system consists of two functions: the water level $ζ$ along the top boundary, and its time derivative $\dotζ$. We prove that for suitable functions $h$, there exists a bounded feedback functional $F$ such that the feedback $u=Fz$ renders the closed-loop system strongly stable. Moreover, for initial states in the domain of the semigroup generator, the norm of the solution decays like $(1+t)^{-\frac{1}{6}}$. Our approach uses a detailed analysis of the partial Dirichlet to Neumann and Neumann to Neumann operators associated to certain edges of the rectangular domain, as well as recent abstract non-uniform stabilization results by Chill, Paunonen, Seifert, Stahn and Tomilov (2019).
In this work, we obtain decay bounds for a class of ID dispersive equations that includes the linearized water wave. These decay bounds display a surprising growth factor, which we show is sharp, The proofs rely on careful analysis of certain oscillatory integral operators. In addition, these results have applications to the linearized water wave operator for low regularity data.
We consider the linearized 2D inviscid shallow water equations in a rectangle. A set of boundary conditions is proposed which make these equations well-posed. Several different cases occur depending on the relative values of the reference velocities $(u_0,v_0)$ and reference height $ϕ_0$ (sub- or super-critical flow at each part of the boundary).
We prove a dispersive estimate for the solutions of the linearized Water-Waves equations in dimension 1 in presence of a flat bottom. We prove a decay with respect to time t of order 1/3 for solutions with initial data in weighted Sobolev spaces. We also give variants to this result with different decays for a more convenient use of the dispersive estimate. We then give an existence result for the full Water-Waves equations in weighted spaces for practical uses of the proven dispersive estimates.
We derive a $L^1_x (\mathbb R^d)-L^{\infty}_x ( \mathbb R^d)$ decay estimate of order $\mathcal O \left( t^{-d/2}\right)$ for the linear propagators $$\exp \left( {\pm it \sqrt{ |D|\left(1+ β|D|^2\right) \tanh |D | } }\right), \qquad β\in \{0, 1\}. \quad D = -i\nabla,$$ with a loss of $3d/4$ or $d/4$-derivatives in the case $β=0$ or $β=1$, respectively. These linear propagators are known to be associated with the linearized water wave equations, where the parameter $β$ measures surface tension effects. As an application we prove low regularity well-posedness for a Whitham-Boussinesq type syste…
In this article we study the so-called water tank system. In this system, the behavior of water contained in a 1-D tank is modelled by Saint-Venant equations, with a scalar distributed control. It is well-known that the linearized systems around uniform steady-states are not controllable, the uncontrollable part being of infinite dimension. Here we will focus on the linearized systems around non-uniform steady states, corresponding to a constant acceleration of the tank. We prove that these systems are controllable in Sobolev spaces, using the moments method and perturbative spectral estimates…
This paper is concerned with the eigenvalues and linear inviscid damping of the 2D capillary gravity water waves of finite depth $x_2\in(-h,0)$ linearized at a monotone shear flow $U(x_2)$. Unlike the linearized Euler equation in a fixed channel where eigenvalues exist only in low horizontal wave number $k$, we first prove the linearized capillary gravity wave has two branches of eigenvalues $-ikc^\pm(k)$, where the wave speeds $c^\pm(k)=O(\sqrt{|k|})$ for $|k|\gg1$ have the same asymptotics as the those of the linear irrotational capillary gravity waves. Under the additional assumption of $U"…
Fredholm-type backstepping transformation, introduced by Coron and Lü, has become a powerful tool for rapid stabilization with fast development over the last decade. Its strength lies in its systematic approach, allowing to deduce rapid stabilization from approximate controllability. But limitations with the current approach exist for operators of the form $|D_x|^α$ for $α\in (1,3/2]$. We present here a new compactness/duality method which hinges on Fredholm's alternative to overcome the $α=3/2$ threshold. More precisely, the compactness/duality method allows to prove the existence of a Riesz …
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of small-amplitude gravity water waves in a rectangular domain where the water depth is much smaller than the horizontal scale. The control acts on one lateral boundary, by imposing the horizontal acceleration of the water along that boundary, as a scalar input function u. The state z of the system consists of two functions: the water level $ζ$ along the top boundary, and its time derivative $\partial$$ζ$ $\partial$t. We prove that the solution of the water waves system converges to the solution of the one dimensional wave equation with Neumann boundary con…
In this paper we investigate the dispersive properties of the solutions of the two dimensional water-waves system. First we prove Strichartz type estimates with loss of derivatives at the same low level of regularity we were able to construct the solutions in [2]. On the other hand, for smoother initial data, we prove that the solutions enjoy the optimal Strichartz estimates (i.e, without loss of regularity compared to the system linearized at (? = 0, ? = 0)).
We consider the capillary-gravity water-waves problem of finite depth with a flat bottom of one or two horizontal dimensions. We derive the modulation equations of leading and next-to-leading order in the hyperbolic scaling for three weakly amplitude-modulated plane-wave solutions of the linearized problem in the absence of quadratic and cubic resonances. We fully justify the derived system of macroscopic equations in the case of pure gravity waves, i.e. in the case of zero surface tension, employing the stability of the water-waves problem on the time-scale $O(1/\ep)$ obtained by Alvarez-Sama…
Water waves are well-known to be dispersive at the linearization level. Considering the fully nonlinear systems, we prove for reasonably smooth solutions the optimal Strichartz estimates for pure gravity waves and the semi-classical Strichartz estimates for gravity-capillary waves; for both 2D and 3D waves. Here, by optimal we mean the gains of regularity (over the Sobolev embedding from Sobolev spaces to Hölder spaces) obtained for the linearized systems. Our proofs combine the paradifferential reductions of Alazard-Burq-Zuily with a dispersive estimate using a localized wave package type par…
We show that periodic traveling waves with sufficiently small amplitudes of the Whitham equation, which incorporates the dispersion relation of surface water waves and the nonlinearity of the shallow water equations, are spectrally unstable to long wavelengths perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value, bearing out the Benjamin-Feir instability of Stokes waves; they are spectrally stable to square integrable perturbations otherwise. The proof involves a spectral perturbation of the associated linearized operator with respect to the Floquet exponent and the small amplitude…
We consider a control system describing the interaction of water waves with a partially immersed rigid body constraint to move only in the vertical direction. The fluid is modeled by the shallow water equations. The control signal is a vertical force acting on the floating body. We first derive the full governing equations of the fluid-body system in a water tank and reformulate them as an initial boundary value problem of a first-order evolution system. We then linearize the equations around the equilibrium state and we study its well-posedness. Finally we focus on the reachability and stabil…
The system of equations for water waves, when linearized about equilibrium of a fluid body with a varying bottom boundary, is described by a spectral problem for the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator of the unperturbed free surface. This spectral problem is fundamental in questions of stability, as well as to the perturbation theory of evolution of the free surface in such settings. In addition, the Dirichlet -- Neumann operator is self-adjoint when given an appropriate definition and domain, and it is a novel but very natural spectral problem for a nonlocal operator. In the case in which the bott…
We prove an asymptotic stability result for the water wave equations linearized around small solitary waves. The equations we consider govern irrotational flow of a fluid with constant density bounded below by a rigid horizontal bottom and above by a free surface under the influence of gravity neglecting surface tension. For sufficiently small amplitude waves, with waveform well-approximated by the well-known sech-squared shape of the KdV soliton, solutions of the linearized equations decay at an exponential rate in an energy norm with exponential weight translated with the wave profile. This …
We consider the stability of periodic gravity free-surface water waves traveling downstream at a constant speed over a shear flow of finite depth. In case the free surface is flat, a sharp criterion of linear instability is established for a general class of shear flows with inflection points and the maximal unstable wave number is found. Comparison to the rigid-wall setting testifies that free surface has a destabilizing effect. For a class of unstable shear flows, the bifurcation of nontrivial periodic traveling waves of small-amplitude is demonstrated at any wave number. We show the linear …
Small-amplitude, traveling, space periodic solutions -- called Stokes waves -- of the 2 dimensional gravity water waves equations in deep water are linearly unstable with respect to long-wave perturbations, as predicted by Benjamin and Feir in 1967. We completely describe the behavior of the four eigenvalues close to zero of the linearized equations at the Stokes wave, as the Floquet exponent is turned on. We prove in particular the conjecture that a pair of non-purely imaginary eigenvalues depicts a closed figure eight, parameterized by the Floquet exponent, in full agreement with numerical s…
In order to investigate corrections to the common KdV approximation for surface water waves in a canal, we derive modulation equations for the evolution of long wavelength initial data. We work in Lagrangian coordinates. The equations which govern corrections to the KdV approximation consist of linearized and inhomogeneous KdV equations plus an inhomogeneous wave equation. These equations are explicitly solvable and we prove estimates showing that they do indeed give a significantly better approximation than the KdV equation alone.
We prove the existence and the linear stability of Cantor families of small amplitude time quasi-periodic standing water wave solutions - namely periodic and even in the space variable x - of a bi-dimensional ocean with finite depth under the action of pure gravity. Such a result holds for all the values of the depth parameter in a Borel set of asymptotically full measure. This is a small divisor problem. The main difficulties are the quasi-linear nature of the gravity water waves equations and the fact that the linear frequencies grow just in a sublinear way at infinity. We overcome these pro…
In this work, we consider the mathematical theory of wind generated water waves. This entails determining the stability properties of the family of laminar flow solutions to the two-phase interface Euler equation. We present a rigorous derivation of the linearized evolution equations about an arbitrary steady solution, and, using this, we give a complete proof of the instability criterion of Miles. Our analysis is valid even in the presence of surface tension and a vortex sheet (discontinuity in the tangential velocity across the air--sea interface). We are thus able to give a unified equation…
We show existence and uniqueness for a linearized water wave problem in a two dimensional domain $G$ with corner, formed by two semi-axis $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ which intersect under an angle $α\in (0,π]$. The existence and uniqueness of the solution is proved by considering an auxiliary mixed problem with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The latter guarantees the existence of the Dirichlet to Neumann map. The water wave boundary value problem is then shown to be equivalent to an equation like $v_{tt}+gΛv=P$ with initial conditions, where $t$ stands for time, $g$ is the gravitational consta…
We consider doubly-periodic travelling waves at the surface of an infinitely deep perfect fluid, only subjected to gravity $g$ and resulting from the nonlinear interaction of two simply periodic travelling waves making an angle $2θ$ between them. \newline Denoting by $μ=gL/c^{2}$ the dimensionless bifurcation parameter ($L$ is the wave length along the direction of the travelling wave and $c$ is the velocity of the wave), bifurcation occurs for $μ=\cos θ$. For non-resonant cases, we first give a large family of formal three-dimensional gravity travelling waves, in the form of an expansion in p…
We study free surface water waves in a 2-D symmetric triangular channel with sides that have a 45o slope. We develop models for small amplitude nonlinear waves, extending earlier studies that have considered the linearized problem. We see that a combination of heuristic small amplitude expansions lead to a relatively simple system that we then use to study interactions of low frequency modes. The formalism relies on an explicit construction of the normal modes of the linear problem and a new way to represent the free surface. We argue that the construction can be applied to more general geomet…
We consider the linearized instability of 2D irrotational solitary water waves. The maxima of energy and the travel speed of solitary waves are not obtained at the highest wave, which has a 120 degree angle at the crest. Under the assumption of non-existence of secondary bifurcation which is confirmed numerically, we prove linear instability of solitary waves which are higher than the wave of maximal energy and lower than the wave of maximal travel speed. It is also shown that there exist unstable solitary waves approaching the highest wave. The unstable waves are of large amplitude and theref…

In the vast literature on tsunami research, few articles have been devoted to energy issues. A theoretical investigation on the energy of waves generated by bottom motion is performed here. We start with the full incompressible Euler equations in the presence of a free surface and derive both dispersive and non-dispersive shallow-water equations with an energy equation. It is shown that dispersive effects only appear at higher order in the energy budget. Then we solve the Cauchy-Poisson problem of tsunami generation for the linearized water wave equations. Exchanges between potential and kinet…
