We study a class of linear-quadratic mean-field games with incomplete information. For each agent, the state is given by a linear forward stochastic differential equation with common noise. Moreover, both the state and control variables can enter the diffusion coefficients of the state equation. We deduce the open-loop adapted decentralized strategies and feedback decentralized strategies by mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equation and Riccati equations, respectively. The well-posedness of the corresponding consistency condition system is obtained and the limiting state-average turns out to be the solution of a mean-field stochastic differential equation driven by common noise. We also verify the $\varepsilon$-Nash equilibrium property of the decentralized control strategies. Finally, a network security problem is studied to illustrate our results as an application.
We study the closed-loop solvability of a stochastic linear quadratic optimal control problem for systems governed by stochastic evolution equations. This solvability is established by means of solvability of the corresponding Riccati equation, which is implied by the uniform convexity of the quadratic cost functional. At last, conditions ensuring the uniform convexity of the cost functional are discussed.
An online policy learning problem of linear control systems is studied. In this problem, the control system is known and linear, and a sequence of quadratic cost functions is revealed to the controller in hindsight, and the controller updates its policy to achieve a sublinear regret, similar to online optimization. A modified online Riccati algorithm is introduced that under some boundedness assumption leads to logarithmic regret bound. In particular, the logarithmic regret for the scalar case is achieved without boundedness assumption. Our algorithm, while achieving a better regret bound, als…
We consider a general linear control system and a general quadratic cost, where the state evolves continuously in time and the control is sampled, i.e., is piecewise constant over a subdivision of the time interval. This is the framework of a linear-quadratic optimal sampled-data control problem. As a first result, we prove that, as the sampling periods tend to zero, the optimal sampled-data controls converge pointwise to the optimal permanent control. Then, we extend the classical Riccati theory to the sampled-data control framework, by developing two different approaches: the first one uses …
This paper studies a class of partial information linear-quadratic mean-field game problems. A general stochastic large-population system is considered, where the diffusion term of the dynamic of each agent can depend on the state and control. We study both the control constrained case and unconstrained case. In control constrained case, by using Hamiltonian approach and convex analysis, the explicit decentralized strategies can be obtained through projection operator. The corresponding Hamiltonian type consistency condition system is derived, which turns out to be a nonlinear mean-field forwa…
A linear-quadratic optimal control problem for a forward stochastic Volterra integral equation (FSVIE, for short) is considered. Under the usual convexity conditions, open-loop optimal control exists, which can be characterized by the optimality system, a coupled system of an FSVIE and a Type-II backward SVIE (BSVIE, for short). To obtain a causal state feedback representation for the open-loop optimal control, a path-dependent Riccati equation for an operator-valued function is introduced, via which the optimality system can be decoupled. In the process of decoupling, a Type-III BSVIE is intr…
As it is popular known, Riccati equation is the key basic tool for optimal control in the modern control theory. The solvability conditions of optimal control, stabilization conditions and controller design are all based on the Riccati equation. However, these results highly depends on a strictly assumption that the Riccati equation is regular. If the Riccati equation is irregular, the controller could not be derived from the equilibrium condition. This paper is concerned with the general stochastic linear quadratic (LQ) with irregular Riccati equation. Different from the classical control the…
In this paper, we investigate the solvability of matrix valued Backward stochastic Riccati equations with jumps (BSREJ), which is associated with a stochastic linear quadratic (SLQ) optimal control problem with random coefficients and driven by both Brownian motion and Poisson jumps. By dynamic programming principle, Doob-Meyer decomposition and inverse flow technique, the existence and uniqueness of the solution for the BSREJ is established. The difficulties addressed to this issue not only are brought from the high nonlinearity of the generator of the BSREJ like the case driven only by Brown…
We investigate a class of zero-sum linear-quadratic stochastic differential games on a finite time horizon governed by multiscale state equations. The multiscale nature of the problem can be leveraged to reformulate the associated generalised Riccati equation as a deterministic singular perturbation problem. In doing so, we show that, for small enough $ε$, the existence of solution to the associated generalised Riccati equation is guaranteed by the existence of a solution to a decoupled pair of differential and algebraic Riccati equations with a reduced order of dimensionality. Furthermore, we…
The paper is concerned with a zero-sum Stackelberg stochastic linear-quadratic (LQ, for short) differential game over finite horizons. Under a fairly weak condition, the Stackelberg equilibrium is explicitly obtained by first solving a forward stochastic LQ optimal control problem (SLQ problem, for short) and then a backward SLQ problem. Two Riccati equations are derived in constructing the Stackelberg equilibrium. An interesting finding is that the difference of these two Riccati equations coincides with the Riccati equation associated with the zero-sum Nash stochastic LQ differential game, w…
A linear quadratic optimal stochastic control problem with random coefficients and indefinite state/control weight costs is usually linked to an indefinite stochastic Riccati equation (SRE) which is a matrix-valued quadratic backward stochastic differential equation along with an algebraic constraint involving the unknown. Either the optimal control problem or the SRE is solvable only if the given data satisfy a certain structure condition that has yet to be precisely defined. In this paper, by introducing a notion of subsolution for the SRE, we derive several novel sufficient conditions for t…

It is a longstanding unsolved problem to characterize the optimal feedbacks for general SLQs (i.e., stochastic linear quadratic control problems) with random coefficients in infinite dimensions; while the same problem but in finite dimensions was just addressed in a recent work [36]. This paper is devoted to giving a solution to this problem under some assumptions which can be verified for several interesting concrete models. More precisely, under these assumptions, we establish the equivalence between the existence of optimal feedback operator for infinite dimensional SLQs and the solvability…
We study in this paper the linear quadratic optimal control (linear quadratic regulation, LQR for short) for discrete-time complex-valued linear systems, which have shown to have several potential applications in control theory. Firstly, an iterative algorithm was proposed to solve the discrete-time bimatrix Riccati equation associated with the LQR problem. It is shown that the proposed algorithm converges to the unique positive definite solution (bimatrix) to the bimatrix Riccati equation with appropriate initial conditions. With the help of this iterative algorithm, LQR problem for the antil…
Algebraic Riccati equations with indefinite quadratic terms play an important role in applications related to robust controller design. While there are many established approaches to solve these in case of small-scale dense coefficients, there is no approach available to compute solutions in the large-scale sparse setting. In this paper, we develop an iterative method to compute low-rank approximations of stabilizing solutions of large-scale sparse continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations with indefinite quadratic terms. We test the developed approach for dense examples in comparison to oth…

This paper is concerned with a linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem with fixed terminal states and integral quadratic constraints. A Riccati equation with infinite terminal value is introduced, which is uniquely solvable and whose solution can be approximated by the solution for a suitable unconstrained LQ problem with penalized terminal state. Using results from duality theory, the optimal control is explicitly derived by solving the Riccati equation together with an optimal parameter selection problem. It turns out that the optimal control is not only a feedback of the cu…
We study a linear quadratic optimal control problem with stochastic coefficients and a terminal state constraint, which may be in force merely on a set with positive, but not necessarily full probability. Under such a partial terminal constraint, the usual approach via a coupled system of a backward stochastic Riccati equation and a linear backward equation breaks down. As a remedy, we introduce a family of auxiliary problems parametrized by the supersolutions to this Riccati equation alone. The target functional of these problems dominates the original constrained one and allows for an explic…
This paper is concerned with linear quadratic optimal control problems for mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (MF-BSDEs, for short) with deterministic coefficients. The optimality system, which is a linear mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equation with constraint, is obtained by a variational method. By decoupling the optimality system, two coupled Riccati equations and an MF-BSDE are derived. It turns out that the coupled two Riccati equations are uniquely solvable. Then a complete and explicit representation is obtained for the optimal control.
In this paper we consider a class of conjugate discrete-time Riccati equations, arising originally from the linear quadratic regulation problem for discrete-time antilinear systems. Under mild and reasonable assumptions, the existence of the maximal solution to the conjugate discrete-time Riccati equation, in which the control weighting matrix is nonsingular and its constant term is Hermitian, will be inherited to a transformed discrete-time algebraic Riccati equation. Based on this inheritance property, an accelerated fixed-point iteration is proposed for finding the maximal solution via the …
This paper studies social optima and Nash games for mean field linear quadratic control systems, where subsystems are coupled via dynamics and individual costs. For the social control problem, we first obtain a set of forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDE) from variational analysis, and construct a feedback-type control by decoupling the FBSDE. By using solutions of two Riccati equations, we design a set of decentralized control laws, which is further proved to be asymptotically social optimal. Two equivalent conditions are given for uniform stabilization of the systems in …
We revisit and extend the Riccati theory, unifying continuous-time linear-quadratic optimal permanent and sampled-data control problems, in finite and infinite time horizons. In a nutshell, we prove that:-- when the time horizon T tends to $+\infty$, one passes from the Sampled-Data Difference Riccati Equation (SD-DRE) to the Sampled-Data Algebraic Riccati Equation (SD-ARE), and from the Permanent Differential Riccati Equation (P-DRE) to the Permanent Algebraic Riccati Equation (P-ARE);-- when the maximal step of the time partition $Δ$ tends to $0$, one passes from (SD-DRE) to (P-DRE), and fro…
In this study, we provide an interpretation of the dual differential Riccati equation of Linear-Quadratic (LQ) optimal control problems. Adopting a novel viewpoint, we show that LQ optimal control can be seen as a regression problem over the space of controlled trajectories, and that the latter has a very natural structure as a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). The dual Riccati equation then describes the evolution of the values of the LQ reproducing kernel when the initial time changes. This unveils new connections between control theory and kernel methods, a field widely used in machi…
We study a general linear quadratic mean field type control problem and connect it to mean field games of a similar type. The solution is given both in terms of a forward/backward system of stochastic differential equations and by a pair of Riccati equations. In certain cases, the solution to the mean field type control is also the equilibrium strategy for a class of mean field games. We use this fact to study an economic model of production of exhaustible resources. Keywords: mean field type control, mean field games, linear-quadratic, optimal control, riccati equations, exhaustible resource …
In this article we study the optimal control problem with quadratic functionals for a linear Volterra integro-differential equation in Hilbert spaces. With the finite history seen as an (additional) initial datum for the evolution, following the variational approach utilized in the study of the linear-quadratic problem for memoryless infinite dimensional systems, we attain a closed-loop form of the unique optimal control via certain operators that are shown to solve a coupled system of quadratic differential equations. This result provides a first extension to the partial differential equation…
This paper is concerned with two-person mean-field linear-quadratic non-zero sum stochastic differential games in an infinite horizon. Both open-loop and closed-loop Nash equilibria are introduced. Existence of an open-loop Nash equilibrium is characterized by the solvability of a system of mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equations in an infinite horizon and the convexity of the cost functionals, and the closed-loop representation of an open-loop Nash equilibrium is given through the solution to a system of two coupled non-symmetric algebraic Riccati equations. The existenc…
This paper is concerned with the closed-loop solvability of one kind of linear-quadratic Stackelberg stochastic differential game, where the coefficients are deterministic. The notion of the closed-loop solvability is introduced, which require to be independent of the initial state. The follower's problem is solved first, and the closed-loop optimal strategy is characterized by a Riccati equation, together with an adapted solution to a linear backward stochastic differential equation. Then the necessary conditions of the existence of the leader's nonanticipating closed-loop optimal strategy is…
One of the fundamental issues in Control Theory is to design feedback controls. It is well-known that, the purpose of introducing Riccati equations in the deterministic case is to provide the desired feedback controls for linear quadratic control problems. To date, the same problem in the stochastic setting is only partially well-understood. In this paper, we establish the equivalence between the existence of optimal feedback controls for the stochastic linear quadratic control problems with random coefficients and the solvability of the corresponding backward stochastic Riccati equations in a…
In this paper, we consider a linear quadratic stochastic two-person nonzero-sum differential game. Open-loop and closed-loop Nash equilibria are introduced. The existence of the former is characterized by the solvability of a system of forward-backward stochastic differential equations, and that of the latter is characterized by the solvability of a system of coupled symmetric Riccati differential equations. Sometimes, open-loop Nash equilibria admit a closed-loop representation, via the solution to a system of non-symmetric Riccati equations, which is different from the outcome of the closed-…
This paper is concerned with a stochastic linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem. The notions of open-loop and closed-loop solvabilities are introduced. A simple example shows that these two solvabilities are different. Closed-loop solvability is established by means of solvability of the corresponding Riccati equation, which is implied by the uniform convexity of the quadratic cost functional. Conditions ensuring the convexity of the cost functional are discussed, including the issue that how negative the control weighting matrix-valued function R(s) can be. Finiteness of th…
This paper is concerned with a linear-quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem for backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs, for short), where the coefficients of the backward control system and the weighting matrices in the cost functional are allowed to be random. By a variational method, the optimality system, which is a coupled linear forward-backward stochastic differential equation (FBSDE, for short), is derived, and by a Hilbert space method, the unique solvability of the optimality system is obtained. In order to construct the optimal control, a new stochastic Riccati…
Control problems with incomplete information and memory limitation appear in many practical situations. Although partially observable stochastic control (POSC) is a conventional theoretical framework that considers the optimal control problem with incomplete information, it cannot consider memory limitation. Furthermore, POSC cannot be solved in practice except in the special cases. In order to address these issues, we propose an alternative theoretical framework, memory-limited POSC (ML-POSC). ML-POSC directly considers memory limitation as well as incomplete information, and it can be solved…
We investigate the asymptotic properties of a finite-time horizon linear-quadratic optimal control problem driven by a multiscale stochastic process with multiplicative Brownian noise. We approach the problem by considering the associated differential Riccati equation and reformulating it as a classical and deterministic singular perturbation problem. Asymptotic properties of this deterministic problem can be gathered from the well-known Tikhonov Theorem. Consequently, we are able to propose two approximation methods to the value function of the stochastic optimal control problem. The first is…
We establish existence and uniqueness for infinite dimensional Riccati equations taking values in the Banach space L 1 ($μ$ $\otimes$ $μ$) for certain signed matrix measures $μ$ which are not necessarily finite. Such equations can be seen as the infinite dimensional analogue of matrix Riccati equations and they appear in the Linear-Quadratic control theory of stochastic Volterra equations.
In this paper, we consider the mixed optimal control of a linear stochastic system with a quadratic cost functional, with two controllers-one can choose only deterministic time functions, called the deterministic controller, while the other can choose adapted random processes, called the random controller. The optimal control is shown to exist under suitable assumptions. The optimal control is characterized via a system of fully coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FB-SDEs) of mean-field type. We solve the FBSDEs via solutions of two (but decoupled) Riccati equations, an…
The paper is concerned with two-person zero-sum mean-field linear-quadratic stochastic differential games over finite horizons. By a Hilbert space method, a necessary condition and a sufficient condition are derived for the existence of an open-loop saddle point. It is shown that under the sufficient condition, the associated two Riccati equations admit unique strongly regular solutions, in terms of which the open-loop saddle point can be represented as a linear feedback of the current state. When the game only satisfies the necessary condition, an approximate sequence is constructed by solvin…
Recently it has been found that for a stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem (LQ problem, for short) in a finite horizon, open-loop solvability is strictly weaker than closed-loop solvability which is equivalent to the regular solvability of the corresponding Riccati equation. Therefore, when an LQ problem is merely open-loop solvable not closed-loop solvable, which is possible, the usual Riccati equation approach will fail to produce a state feedback representation of open-loop optimal controls. The objective of this paper is to introduce and investigate the notion of weak closed…
A new fundamental solution semigroup for operator differential Riccati equations is developed. This fundamental solution semigroup is constructed via an auxiliary finite horizon optimal control problem whose value functional growth with respect to time horizon is determined by a particular solution of the operator differential Riccati equation of interest. By exploiting semiconvexity of this value functional, and the attendant max-plus linearity and semigroup properties of the associated dynamic programming evolution operator, a semigroup of max-plus integral operators is constructed in a dual…
In this paper, a leader-follower stochastic differential game is studied for a linear stochastic differential equation with a quadratic cost functional. The coefficients in the state equation and the weighting matrices in the cost functionals are all deterministic. Closed-loop strategies are introduced, which require to be independent of initial states; and such a nature makes it very useful and convenient in applications. The follower first solves a stochastic linear quadratic optimal control problem, and his optimal closed-loop strategy is characterized by a Riccati equation, together with a…
