We investigate the asymptotic properties of a finite-time horizon linear-quadratic optimal control problem driven by a multiscale stochastic process with multiplicative Brownian noise. We approach the problem by considering the associated differential Riccati equation and reformulating it as a classical and deterministic singular perturbation problem. Asymptotic properties of this deterministic problem can be gathered from the well-known Tikhonov Theorem. Consequently, we are able to propose two approximation methods to the value function of the stochastic optimal control problem. The first is by constructing an approximately optimal control process whilst the second is by finding the direct limit to the value function. Both approximation methods rely on the existence of a solution to a coupled differential-algebraic Riccati equation with certain stability properties - this is the main difficulty of the paper.
This paper studies uniform stabilization and social optimality for linear quadratic (LQ) mean field control problems with multiplicative noise, where agents are coupled via dynamics and individual costs. The state and control weights in cost functionals are not limited to be positive semi-definite. This leads to an indefinite LQ mean field control problem, which may still be well-posed due to deep nature of multiplicative noise. We first obtain a set of forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) from variational analysis, and construct a feedback control by decoupling the FBSD…
We investigate a class of zero-sum linear-quadratic stochastic differential games on a finite time horizon governed by multiscale state equations. The multiscale nature of the problem can be leveraged to reformulate the associated generalised Riccati equation as a deterministic singular perturbation problem. In doing so, we show that, for small enough $ε$, the existence of solution to the associated generalised Riccati equation is guaranteed by the existence of a solution to a decoupled pair of differential and algebraic Riccati equations with a reduced order of dimensionality. Furthermore, we…
This paper presents a novel model-free and fully data-driven policy iteration scheme for quadratic regulation of linear dynamics with state- and input-multiplicative noise. The implementation is similar to the least-squares temporal difference scheme for Markov decision processes, estimating Q-functions by solving a least-squares problem with instrumental variables. The scheme is compared with a model-based system identification scheme and natural policy gradient through numerical experiments.
We present a linear--quadratic Stackelberg game with a large number of followers and we also derive the mean field limit of infinitely many followers. The relation between optimization and mean-field limit is studied and conditions for consistency are established. Finally, we propose a numerical method based on the derived models and present numerical results.
In this paper, the reinforcement learning (RL)-based optimal control problem is studied for multiplicative-noise systems, where input delay is involved and partial system dynamics is unknown. To solve a variant of Riccati-ZXL equations, which is a counterpart of standard Riccati equation and determines the optimal controller, we first develop a necessary and sufficient stabilizing condition in form of several Lyapunov-type equations, a parallelism of the classical Lyapunov theory. Based on the condition, we provide an offline and convergent algorithm for the variant of Riccati-ZXL equations. A…
In this paper, the optimal local and remote linear quadratic (LQ) control problem is studied for a networked control system (NCS) which consists of multiple subsystems and each of which is described by a general multiplicative noise stochastic system with one local controller and one remote controller. Due to the unreliable uplink channels, the remote controller can only access unreliable state information of all subsystems, while the downlink channels from the remote controller to the local controllers are perfect. The difficulties of the LQ control problem for such a system arise from the di…

We propose a policy iteration algorithm for solving the multiplicative noise linear quadratic output feedback design problem. The algorithm solves a set of coupled Riccati equations for estimation and control arising from a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) under a class of linear dynamic control policies. We show in numerical experiments far faster convergence than a value iteration algorithm, formerly the only known algorithm for solving this class of problem. The results suggest promising future research directions for policy optimization algorithms in more general POMDPs…
In this paper we study model reduction of linear and bilinear quadratic stochastic control problems with parameter uncertainties. Specifically, we consider slow-fast systems with unknown diffusion coefficient and study the convergence of the slow process in the limit of infinite scale separation. The aim of our work is two-fold: Firstly, we want to propose a general framework for averaging and homogenisation of multiscale systems with parametric uncertainties in the drift or in the diffusion coefficient. Secondly, we want to use this framework to quantify the uncertainty in the reduced system …
In this paper we study the finite-horizon optimal covariance steering problem for a continuous-time linear stochastic system subject to both additive and multiplicative noise. The noise can be continuous or it may contain jumps. Additive noise does not depend on the state or the control, whereas multiplicative noise has a magnitude proportional to the current state. The cost is assumed to be quadratic in both the state and the control. First, the controllability of the state covariance is established under mild assumptions. Then, the optimal control for steering the covariance is provided. Las…
Despite decades of research and recent progress in adaptive control and reinforcement learning, there remains a fundamental lack of understanding in designing controllers that provide robustness to inherent non-asymptotic uncertainties arising from models estimated with finite, noisy data. We propose a robust adaptive control algorithm that explicitly incorporates such non-asymptotic uncertainties into the control design. The algorithm has three components: (1) a least-squares nominal model estimator; (2) a bootstrap resampling method that quantifies non-asymptotic variance of the nominal mode…
