This paper is concerned with the closed-loop solvability of one kind of linear-quadratic Stackelberg stochastic differential game, where the coefficients are deterministic. The notion of the closed-loop solvability is introduced, which require to be independent of the initial state. The follower's problem is solved first, and the closed-loop optimal strategy is characterized by a Riccati equation, together with an adapted solution to a linear backward stochastic differential equation. Then the necessary conditions of the existence of the leader's nonanticipating closed-loop optimal strategy is obtained via a system of cross-coupled Riccati equations. The sufficiency is open since the completion-of-square method is invalid.
The paper is concerned with a zero-sum Stackelberg stochastic linear-quadratic (LQ, for short) differential game over finite horizons. Under a fairly weak condition, the Stackelberg equilibrium is explicitly obtained by first solving a forward stochastic LQ optimal control problem (SLQ problem, for short) and then a backward SLQ problem. Two Riccati equations are derived in constructing the Stackelberg equilibrium. An interesting finding is that the difference of these two Riccati equations coincides with the Riccati equation associated with the zero-sum Nash stochastic LQ differential game, w…
This paper is concerned with a linear quadratic stochastic Stackelberg differential game with time delay. The model is general, in which the state delay and the control delay both appear in the state equation, moreover, they both enter into the diffusion term. By introducing two Pseudo-Riccati equations and a special matrix equation, the state feedback representation of the open-loop Stackelberg strategy is derived, under some assumptions. Finally, two examples are given to illustrate the applications of the theoretical results.
We consider a controlled linear-quadratic (LQ) large-population system with mixture of three types agents: major leader, minor leaders and minor followers. The Stackelberg-Nash-Cournot (SNC) approximate equilibrium is studied by a major-minor mean-field game (MFG) coupled with a leader-follower Stackelberg game. By variational method, the SNC approximate equilibrium strategy can be represented by some forward-backward-stochastic-differential-equations (FBSDEs) in the open-loop sense. And we pay great effort to give the feedback form of the open-loop strategy by some Riccati equations.
In this technical note, we consider the linear-quadratic time-inconsistent mean-field type leader-follower Stackelberg differential game with an adapted open-loop information structure. The objective functionals of the leader and the follower include conditional expectations of state and control (mean field) variables, and the cost parameters could be general nonexponential discounting depending on the initial time. As stated in the existing literature, these two general settings of the objective functionals induce time inconsistency in the optimal solutions. Given an arbitrary control of the …
This paper is concerned with the stochastic linear quadratic Stackelberg differential game with overlapping information, where the diffusion terms contain the control and state variables. Here the term "overlapping" means that there are common part between the follower's and the leader's information, while they have no inclusion relation. Optimal controls of the follower and the leader are obtained by the stochastic maximum principle, the direct calculation of the derivative of the cost functional and stochastic filtering. A new system of Riccati equations is introduced to represent the state …
This paper is concerned with a three-level stochastic linear-quadratic Stackelberg differential game with asymmetric information, in which three players participate credited as Player 1, Player 2 and Player 3. Player 3 acts as the leader of Player 2 and Player 1, Player 2 acts as the leader of Player 1 and Player 1 acts as the follower. The asymmetric information considered is: the information available to Player 1 is based on the sub-$σ$-algebra of the information available to Player 2, and the information available to Player 2 is based on the sub-$σ$-algebra of the information available to P…
This paper studies a class of dynamic Stackelberg games under open-loop information structure with constrained linear agent dynamics and quadratic utility functions. We show two important properties for this class of dynamic Stackelberg games. First, we prove that under mild conditions, the optimal control of individual agents at the solution of the Stackelberg game coincides with the solution to the team problem, where all agents cooperatively achieve the coordinator's objective. Second, we show that the the agent's control at each time step is non-increasing with respect to the coordinator's…
We discuss an open-loop backward Stackelberg differential game involving single leader and single follower. Unlike most Stackelberg game literature, the state to be controlled is characterized by a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) for which the terminal- instead initial-condition is specified as a priori; the decisions of leader consist of a static terminal-perturbation and a dynamic linear-quadratic control. In addition, the terminal control is subject to (convex-closed) pointwise and (affine) expectation constraints. Both constraints are arising from real applications such as…
A linear-quadratic partially observed Stackelberg stochastic differential game with multiple followers and its application to multi-agent formation control
This paper is concerned with a Stackelberg game of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs), where the coefficients of the backward system and the cost functionals are deterministic, and the control domain is convex. Necessary and sufficient conditions of the optimality for the follower and the leader are first given for the general problem, by the stochastic maximum principles of BSDEs and forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), respectively. Then a linear-quadratic (LQ) Stackelberg game of BSDEs is investigated under standard assumptions. The state feedback rep…
We study the closed-loop solvability of a stochastic linear quadratic optimal control problem for systems governed by stochastic evolution equations. This solvability is established by means of solvability of the corresponding Riccati equation, which is implied by the uniform convexity of the quadratic cost functional. At last, conditions ensuring the uniform convexity of the cost functional are discussed.
This paper considers linear-quadratic (LQ) stochastic leader-follower Stackelberg differential games for jump-diffusion systems with random coefficients. We first solve the LQ problem of the follower using the stochastic maximum principle and obtain the state-feedback representation of the open-loop optimal solution in terms of the integro-stochastic Riccati differential equation (ISRDE), where the state-feedback type control is shown to be optimal via the completion of squares method. Next, we establish the stochastic maximum principle for the indefinite LQ stochastic optimal control problem …
In this paper, we investigate a new model of a linear-quadratic mean-field stochastic Stackelberg differential game with one leader and two followers, in which the leader is allowed to stop her strategy at a random time. Our overarching goal is to find the Stackelberg solution of the leader and followers for such a model. By employing the backward induction method, the state equation is divided into two-stage equations. Moreover, by using the maximum principle and the verification theorem, the Stackelberg solution is obtained for such a model.

This paper obtains the maximum principle for both stochastic (global) open-loop and stochastic (global) closed-loop Stackelberg differential games. For the closed-loop case, we use the theory of controlled forward-backward stochastic differential equations to derive the maximum principle for the leader's optimal strategy. In the special case of the open-loop linear quadratic Stackelberg game, we consider the follower's Hamiltonian system as the leader's state equation, derive the related stochastic Riccati equation, and show the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the Riccati equation …
This paper is concerned with a linear-quadratic partially observed Stackelberg stochastic differential game with correlated state and observation noises, where the diffusion coefficient does not contain the control variable and the control set is not necessarily convex. Both the leader and the follower have their own observation equations, and the information filtration available to the leader is contained in that to the follower. By spike variational, state decomposition and backward separation techniques, necessary and sufficient conditions of the Stackelberg equilibrium points are derived. …
This paper is concerned with a Stackelberg stochastic differential game on a finite horizon in feedback information pattern. A system of parabolic partial differential equations is obtained at the level of Hamiltonian to give the verification theorem of the feedback Stackelberg equilibrium. As an example, a linear quadratic Stackelberg stochastic differential game is investigated. Riccati equations are introduced to express the feedback Stackelberg equilibrium, analytical and numerical solutions to these Riccati equations are discussed in some special cases.
In Stackelberg v/s Stackelberg games a collection of leaders compete in a Nash game constrained by the equilibrium conditions of another Nash game amongst the followers. The resulting equilibrium problems are plagued by the nonuniqueness of follower equilibria and nonconvexity of leader problems whereby the problem of providing sufficient conditions for existence of global or even local equilibria remains largely open. Indeed available existence statements are restrictive and model specific. In this paper, we present what is possibly the first general existence result for equilibria for this c…
This paper investigates the so-called asymptotic solvability problem in linear quadratic (LQ) mean field games. The model has asymptotic solvability if for all sufficiently large population sizes, the corresponding game has a set of feedback Nash strategies subject to a mild regularity requirement. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition and show that in this case the solution converges to a mean field limit. This is accomplished by developing a re-scaling method to derive a low dimensional ordinary differential equation (ODE) system, where a non-symmetric Riccati ODE has a central rol…
This paper studies asymptotic solvability of a linear quadratic (LQ) mean field social optimization problem with controlled diffusions and indefinite state and control weights. Starting with an $N$-agent model, we employ a rescaling approach to derive a low-dimensional Riccati ordinary differential equation (ODE) system, which characterizes a necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic solvability. The decentralized control obtained from the mean field limit ensures a bounded optimality loss in minimizing the social cost having magnitude $O(N)$, which implies an optimality loss of $O(1/N…
Recently it has been found that for a stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem (LQ problem, for short) in a finite horizon, open-loop solvability is strictly weaker than closed-loop solvability which is equivalent to the regular solvability of the corresponding Riccati equation. Therefore, when an LQ problem is merely open-loop solvable not closed-loop solvable, which is possible, the usual Riccati equation approach will fail to produce a state feedback representation of open-loop optimal controls. The objective of this paper is to introduce and investigate the notion of weak closed…
This paper is concerned with the stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem with Poisson jumps. The coefficients in the state equation and the weighting matrices in the cost functional are all deterministic but are allowed indefinite. The notion of closed-loop strategies is introduced, and the optimal closed-loop strategy is characterized by a Riccati integral-differential equation and a backward stochastic differential equation with Poisson jumps.
This paper is concerned with mean-field stochastic linear-quadratic (MF-SLQ, for short) optimal control problems with deterministic coefficients. The notion of weak closed-loop optimal strategy is introduced. It is shown that the open-loop solvability is equivalent to the existence of a weak closed-loop optimal strategy. Moreover, when open-loop optimal controls exist, there is at least one of them admitting a state feedback representation, which is the outcome of a weak closed-loop optimal strategy. Finally, an example is presented to illustrate the procedure for finding weak closed-loop opti…
This paper considers dynamic (multi-stage) signaling games involving an encoder and a decoder who have subjective models on the cost functions. We consider both Nash (simultaneous-move) and Stackelberg (leader-follower) equilibria of dynamic signaling games under quadratic criteria. For the multi-stage scalar cheap talk, we show that the final stage equilibrium is always quantized and under further conditions the equilibria for all time stages must be quantized. In contrast, the Stackelberg equilibria are always fully revealing. In the multi-stage signaling game where the transmission of a Gau…
This paper is concerned with a Stackelberg stochastic differential game with asymmetric noisy observation, with one follower and one leader. In our model, the follower cannot observe the state process directly, but could observe a noisy observation process, while the leader can completely observe the state process. Open-loop Stackelberg equilibrium is considered. The follower first solve an stochastic optimal control problem with partial observation, the maximum principle and verification theorem are obtained. Then the leader turns to solve an optimal control problem for a conditional mean-fie…
An optimal control problem is studied for a linear mean-field stochastic differential equation with a quadratic cost functional. The coefficients and the weighting matrices in the cost functional are all assumed to be deterministic. Closed-loop strategies are introduced, which require to be independent of initial states; and such a nature makes it very useful and convenient in applications. In this paper, the existence of an optimal closed-loop strategy for the system (also called the closed-loop solvability of the problem) is characterized by the existence of a regular solution to the coupled…
In this paper, we consider a linear quadratic (LQ) leader-follower stochastic differential game for regime switching diffusions with mean-field interactions. One of the salient features of this paper is that conditional mean-field terms are included in the state equation and cost functionals. Based on stochastic maximum principles (SMPs), the follower's problem and the leader's problem are solved sequentially and an open-loop Stackelberg equilibrium is obtained. Further, with the help of the so-called four-step scheme, the corresponding Hamiltonian systems for the two players are decoupled and…
In this paper, the known deterministic linear-quadratic Stackelberg game is revisited, whose open-loop Stackelberg solution actually possesses the nature of time inconsistency. To handle this time inconsistency, {a two-tier game framework is introduced, where the upper-tier game works according to Stackelberg's scenario with a leader and a follower, and two lower-tier intertemporal games give the follower's and leader's equilibrium response mappings that mimic the notion of time-consistent open-loop equilibrium control in existing literature. The resulting open-loop equilibrium solution of the…
This paper is concerned with two-person mean-field linear-quadratic non-zero sum stochastic differential games in an infinite horizon. Both open-loop and closed-loop Nash equilibria are introduced. Existence of an open-loop Nash equilibrium is characterized by the solvability of a system of mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equations in an infinite horizon and the convexity of the cost functionals, and the closed-loop representation of an open-loop Nash equilibrium is given through the solution to a system of two coupled non-symmetric algebraic Riccati equations. The existenc…
Mean field game theory has been developed largely following two routes. One of them, called the direct approach, starts by solving a large-scale game and next derives a set of limiting equations as the population size tends to infinity. The second route is to apply mean field approximations and formalize a fixed point problem by analyzing the best response of a representative player. This paper addresses the connection and difference of the two approaches in a linear quadratic (LQ) setting. We first introduce an asymptotic solvability notion for the direct approach, which means for all suffici…
We provide conditions ensuring that the KKT-type conditions characterizes the global optimality for quadratically constrained (possibly nonconvex) quadratic programming QCQP problems in Hilbert spaces. The key property is the convexity of a image-type set related to the functions appearing in the formulation of the problem. The proof of the main result relies on a generalized version of the (Jakubovich) S-Lemma in Hilbert spaces. As an application, we consider the class of QCQP problems with a special form of the quadratic terms of the constraints.
In this paper, a leader-follower stochastic differential game is studied for a linear stochastic differential equation with a quadratic cost functional. The coefficients in the state equation and the weighting matrices in the cost functionals are all deterministic. Closed-loop strategies are introduced, which require to be independent of initial states; and such a nature makes it very useful and convenient in applications. The follower first solves a stochastic linear quadratic optimal control problem, and his optimal closed-loop strategy is characterized by a Riccati equation, together with a…
This paper is concerned with a Stackelberg game of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with partial information, where the information of the follower is a sub-$σ$-algebra of that of the leader. Necessary and sufficient conditions of the optimality for the follower and the leader are first given for the general problem, by the partial information stochastic maximum principles of BSDEs and forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), respectively. Then a linear-quadratic (LQ) Stackelberg game of BSDEs with partial information is investigated. The state estimate fe…
This paper is concerned with a stochastic linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem. The notions of open-loop and closed-loop solvabilities are introduced. A simple example shows that these two solvabilities are different. Closed-loop solvability is established by means of solvability of the corresponding Riccati equation, which is implied by the uniform convexity of the quadratic cost functional. Conditions ensuring the convexity of the cost functional are discussed, including the issue that how negative the control weighting matrix-valued function R(s) can be. Finiteness of th…
This paper considers linear quadratic (LQ) mean field games with a major player and analyzes an asymptotic solvability problem. It starts with a large-scale system of coupled dynamic programming equations and applies a re-scaling technique introduced in Huang and Zhou (2018a, 2018b) to derive a set of Riccati equations in lower dimensions, the solvability of which determines the necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic solvability. We next derive the mean field limit of the strategies and the value functions. Finally, we show that the two decentralized strategies can be interpreted as…
