In this paper, we prove the asymptotic stability of Couette flow in a strong uniform magnetic field for the Euler-MHD system, when the perturbations are in Gevrey-$\frac{1}{s}$, $(\frac12<s\leq 1)$ and of size smaller than the resistivity coefficient $μ$. More precisely, we prove (1) the $μ^{-\frac13}$-amplification of the perturbed vorticity, namely, the size of the vorticity grows from $\|ω_{\mathrm{in}}\|_{\mathcal{G}^{λ_{0}}}\lesssim μ$ to $\|ω_{\infty}\|_{\mathcal{G}^{λ'}}\lesssim μ^{\frac23}$; (2) the polynomial decay of the perturbed current density, namely, $\left\|j_{\neq}\right\|_{L^2}\lesssim \frac{c_0 }{\langle t\rangle^2 }\min\left\{μ^{-\frac13},\langle t \rangle\right\}$; (3) and the damping for the perturbed velocity and magnetic field, namely, \[ \left\|(u^1_{\neq},b^1_{\neq})\right\|_{L^2}\lesssim \frac{c_0μ}{\langle t\rangle }\min\left\{μ^{-\frac13},\langle t \rangle\right\}, \quad \left\|(u^2,b^2)\right\|_{L^2}\lesssim \frac{c_0μ}{\langle t\rangle^2 }\min\left\{μ^{-\frac13},\langle t \rangle\right\}. \] We also confirm that the strong uniform magnetic field stabilizes the Euler-MHD system near Couette flow.
This note is devoted to the linear stability of the Couette flow for the non-isentropic compressible Euler equations in a domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. Exploiting the several conservation laws originated from the special structure of the linear system, we obtain a Lyapunov type instability for the density, the temperature, the compressible part of the velocity field, and also obtain an inviscid damping for the incompressible part of the velocity field.
In this paper we reveal the existence of a large family of new, nontrivial and smooth traveling waves for the 2D Euler equation at an arbitrarily small distance from the Couette flow in $H^s$, with $s<3/2$, at the level of the vorticity. The speed of these waves is of order 1 with respect to this distance. This result strongly contrasts with the setting of very high regularity in Gevrey spaces (see arXiv:1306.5028), where the problem exhibits an inviscid damping mechanism that leads to relaxation of perturbations back to nearby shear flows. It also complements the fact that there not exist non…
In this note we revisit the proof of Bedrossian and Masmoudi [arXiv:1306.5028] about the inviscid damping of planar shear flows in the 2D Euler equations under the assumption of zero mean perturbation. We prove that a small perturbation to the 2D Euler Couette flow in $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$ strongly converge to zero, under the additional assumption that the average in $x$ is always zero. In general the mean is not a conserved quantity for the nonlinear dynamics, for this reason this is a particular case. Nevertheless our assumption allow the presence of echoes in the problem, which we c…
We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and reta…
In this paper, we investigate linear stability properties of the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations linearized around a shear flow given by a monotone profile, close to the Couette flow, with constant density, in the domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. We begin by directly investigating the Couette shear flow, where we characterize the linear growth of the compressible part of the fluid while proving time decay for the incompressible part (inviscid damping with slower rates). Then we extend the analysis to monotone shear flows near Couette, where we are able to give an upper bound, s…
We prove the asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the Couette flow for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, if the initial velocity is close to the Couette flow and the initial density is close to a positive constant in the Gevrey class 2, then 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations are globally well-posed and the velocity converges strongly to a shear flow close to the Couette flow, and the vorticity will be driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t\to \infty$. To our knowledge, t…
We prove the existence and stability of smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations near plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. Consequently, we also provide the zero viscosity limit of the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations to the steady Euler equations. First, in the absence of any external force, we prove that there exist smooth solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations which are stable under infinitesimal perturbations of plane Poiseuille-Couette flow. In particular, if the basic flow is the Couette flow, then we can prove that the flow is stable for any finite perturbation small e…
In this expository note we discuss our recent work [arXiv:1306.5028] on the nonlinear asymptotic stability of shear flows in the 2D Euler equations of ideal, incompressible flow. In that work it is proved that perturbations to the Couette flow which are small in a suitable regularity class converge strongly in $L^2$ to a shear flow which is close to the Couette flow. Enstrophy is mixed to small scales by an almost linear evolution and is generally lost in the weak limit as t -> +/- infinity. In this note we discuss the most important physical and mathematical aspects of the result and the key …

We study the stability of the Couette flow $(y,0,0)^T$ in the 3D incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for a conducting fluid on $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T} $ in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field $α(σ, 0, 1)$. We consider the inviscid, ideal conductor limit $\textbf{Re}^{-1}$, $\textbf{R}_m^{-1} \ll 1$ and prove that for strong and suitably oriented background fields the Couette flow is asymptotically stable to perturbations small in the Sobolev space $H^N$. More precisely, we show that if $α$ and $N$ are sufficiently large, $σ\in \mathbb{R} \setminu…
We develop commutator estimates in the framework of Besov-Morrey spaces, which are modeled on Besov spaces and the underlying norm is of Morrey space rather than the usual $L^{p}$ space. As direct applications of commutator estimates, we establish the local well-posedness and blow-up criterion of solutions in Besov-Morrey spaces for the incompressible Euler equations and ideal MHD system. Main analysis tools are the Littlewood-Paley decomposition and Bony's para-product formula.
We study systems interpolating between the 3D incompressible Euler and electron--MHD equations, given by \begin{equation*} \partial_t B + V \cdot \nabla B = B\cdot \nabla V, \qquad V = -\nabla\times (-Δ)^{-a} B, \qquad \nabla\cdot B = 0, \end{equation*} where $B$ is a time-dependent vector field in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Under the assumption that the initial data is axi-symmetric without swirl, we prove local well-posedness of Lipschitz continuous solutions and existence of traveling waves in the range $1/2<a<1$. These generalize the corresponding results for the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations and s…
We introduce an active vector system, which generalizes both the 3D Euler equations and the electron--magnetohydrodynamic equations (E--MHD). We may as well view the system as singularized systems for the 3D Euler equations, in which case the equations of (E--MHD) correspond to the order two more singular one than the 3D Euler equations. The generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation (gSQG) can be also embedded into a special case of our system when the unknown functions are constant in one coordinate direction. We investigate some basic properties of this system as well as the conservatio…
We study the inviscid damping of Couette flow with an exponentially stratified density. The optimal decay rates of the velocity field and the density are obtained for general perturbations with minimal regularity. For Boussinesq approximation model, the decay rates we get are consistent with the previous results in the literature. We also study the decay rates for the full Euler equations of stratified fluids, which were not studied before. For both models, the decay rates depend on the Richardson number in a very similar way. Besides, we also study the dispersive decay due to the exponential …
We prove asymptotic stability of shear flows close to the planar Couette flow in the 2D inviscid Euler equations on $\Torus \times \Real$. That is, given an initial perturbation of the Couette flow small in a suitable regularity class, specifically Gevrey space of class smaller than 2, the velocity converges strongly in L^2 to a shear flow which is also close to the Couette flow. The vorticity is asymptotically driven to small scales by a linear evolution and weakly converges as $t \rightarrow \pm\infty$. The strong convergence of the velocity field is sometimes referred to as inviscid damping…
In this paper, similar to the incompressible Euler equation, we prove the propagation of the Gevrey regularity of solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. We also obtain an uniform estimate of Gevery radius for the solution of MHD equation.
We prove asymptotic stability of shear flows in a neighborhood of the Couette flow for the 2D Euler equations in the domain $\T\times[0,1]$. More precisely we prove that if we start with a small and smooth perturbation (in a suitable Gevrey space) of the Couette flow, then the velocity field converges strongly to a nearby shear flow. The vorticity, which is initially assumed to be supported in the interior of the channel, will remain supported in the interior of the channel, will be driven to higher frequencies by the linear flow, and will converge weakly to $0$ as $t\to\infty$, modulo the she…
Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1<y<1}. For the Couette flow v_0=(y,0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation at v_0 decays in time. At the nonlinear level, such inviscid damping has not been proved. First, we show that in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal horizontal period. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow and for any horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behavior in such neighbor…
We study the Cauchy problem for a system of equations corresponding to a singular limit of radiative hydrodynamics, namely the 3D radiative compressible Euler system coupled to an electromagnetic field through the MHD approximation. Assuming the presence of damping together with suitable smallness hypotheses for the data, we prove that this problem admits a unique global smooth solution.
In this paper, we study the global existence of classical solutions to the three dimensional incompressible viscous magneto-hydrodynamical system without magnetic diffusion on periodic boxes, i.e., with periodic boundary conditions. We work in Eulerian coordinate and employ a time-weighted energy estimate to prove the global existence result, under the assumptions that the initial magnetic field is close enough to an equilibrium state and the initial data have some symmetries.
In this paper we use maximum principle in the far field region for the time dependent self-similar Euler equations to exclude discretely self-similar blow-up for the Euler equations of the incompressible fluid flows. Our decay conditions near spatial infinity of the blow-up profile are given explicitly in terms the coefficient in the equations. We also deduce triviality of the discretely self-similar solution to the magnetohydrodynamic system(MHD), under suitable decay conditions near spatial infinity than the previous one. Applying similar argument directly to the Euler equations, we obtain a…

In this work we study the long time, inviscid limit of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations near the periodic Couette flow, and in particular, we confirm at the nonlinear level the qualitative behavior predicted by Kelvin's 1887 linear analysis. At high Reynolds number Re, we prove that the solution behaves qualitatively like 2D Euler for times t \lesssim Re^(1/3), and in particular exhibits inviscid damping (e.g. the vorticity weakly approaches a shear flow). For times t \gtrsim Re^(1/3), which is sooner than the natural dissipative time scale O(Re), the viscosity becomes dominant and the streamwis…
Nested invariant tori foliating a vector field and its curl: toward MHD equilibria and steady Euler flows in toroidal domains without continuous Euclidean isometries
We prove by an explicit construction that solutions to incompressible 3D Euler equations defined in the periodic cube can be mapped bijectively to a new system of equations whose solutions are globally regular. We establish that the usual Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for finite-time singularity (or blowup) of a solution to the 3D Euler system is equivalent to a condition on the corresponding \emph{regular} solution of the new system. In the hypothetical case of Euler finite-time singularity, we provide an explicit formula for the blowup time in terms of the regular solution of the new system. Th…
In this paper, we are concerned with the energy and magnetic helicity conservation of weak solutions for both the electron and Hall magnetohydrodynamic equations. Various sufficient criteria to ensure the energy and magnetic helicity conservation in Onsager's critical spaces $\underline{B}^α_{p,VMO}$ and $B^α_{p,c(\mathbb{N})}$ in these systems are established. Moreover, for the E-MHD equations, we observe that the conservation criteria of energy and magnetic helicity to the E-MHD equations correspond to the helicity and energy to the ideal incompressible Euler equations, respectively.
We study the behavior of solutions to the incompressible $2d$ Euler equations near two canonical shear flows with critical points, the Kolmogorov and Poiseuille flows, with consequences for the associated Navier-Stokes problems. We exhibit a large family of new, non-trivial stationary states of analytic regularity, that are arbitrarily close to the Kolmogorov flow on the square torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. This situation contrasts strongly with the setting of some monotone shear flows, such as the Couette flow: in both cases the linearized problem exhibits an "inviscid damping" mechanism that leads t…
We consider the plasma-vacuum interface problem in a horizontally periodic slab impressed by a uniform non-horizontal magnetic field. The lower plasma region is governed by the incompressible inviscid and resistive MHD, the upper vacuum region is governed by the pre-Maxwell equations, and the effect of surface tension is taken into account on the free interface. The global well-posedness of the problem, supplemented with physical boundary conditions, around the equilibrium is established, and the solution is shown to decay to the equilibrium almost exponentially. Our results reveal the strong …
A numerical scheme is developed for systems of conservation laws on manifolds which arise in high speed aerodynamics and magneto-aerodynamics. The systems are presented in an arbitrary coordinate system on the manifold and involve source terms which account for the curvature of the domain. In order for a numerical method to accurately capture the behavior of the system it is solving, the equations must be discretized in a way that is not only consistent in value, but also models the appropriate character of the system. Such a discretization is presented in this work which preserves the tensori…
