Point defect tolerance in materials, which extends operational lifetime, is essential for societal sustainability, and the creation of a framework to design such properties is a grand challenge in the material sciences. Using three prototypical lead bromide perovskites in single crystal form and high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy, we reveal the unexpectedly pivotal role of the A-cation in mediating the influence of photoinduced defects. Organic A-cation hydrogen bonding facilitates chemical flexing of the lead-bromide bond that mitigates the self-doping effect of bromide vacancies. The contribution of partially ionic lead-bromide bonding to the electronic band edges, where the bonding becomes more ionic upon the formation of defects, mitigates re-hybridization of the electronic structure upon degradation. These findings reveal two new general design principles for defect tolerance in materials. Our findings uncover the foundations of defect tolerance in halide perovskites and have implications for defect calculations, all beam-based measurements of photophysical properties and perovskite solar cell technology.
Direct comparison between perovskite-structured hybrid organic-inorganic - methyl ammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) and all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3), allows identifying possible fundamental differences in their structural, thermal and electronic characteristics. Both materials possess a similar direct optical band-gap, but CsPbBr3 demonstrates a higher thermal stability than MAPbBr3. In order to compare device properties we fabricated solar cells, with similarly synthesized MAPbBr3 or CsPbBr3, over mesoporous titania scaffolds. Both cell types demonstrated comparable photovoltaic …
Hot carrier solar cells hold promise for exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit. Slow hot carrier cooling is one of the most intriguing properties of lead halide perovskites and distinguishes this class of materials from competing materials used in solar cells. Here we use the element selectivity of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy to uncover a previously hidden feature in the conduction band states, the σ-π energy separation, and find that it is strongly influenced by the strength of electronic coupling between the A-cation and bromide-lead sublattice. Our finding provides an alternative mec…
Using nanoprobe X-ray diffraction microscopy, we investigate the relationship between residual strains from crystal growth in CsPbBr$_3$ thin film crystals, their stability, and local bandgap. We find that out-of-plane compressive strain that arises from cooldown from crystallization is detrimental to material stability under X-ray irradiation. We also find that the optical photoluminescence red shifts as a result of the out-of-plane compressive strain. The sensitivity of bandgap to strain suggests possible applications such as stress-sensitive sensors. Mosaicity, the formation of small misori…

Computational and Experimental Investigation of Chiral and Achiral 2D Organic Lead Bromide Perovskites: Octahedral Distortions and Electronic and Optical Properties
The power conversion efficiency of photovoltaic devices based on semiconductor perovskites has reached ~20% after just several years of research efforts. With concomitant discoveries of other promising applications in lasers, light-emitting diodes and photodetectors, it is natural to anticipate what further excitements these exotic perovskites could bring about. Here we report on the observation of single photon emission from single CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized from a facile colloidal approach. Compared with traditional metal-chalcogenide NCs, these CsPbBr3 NCs exhibit nea…
We have observed short-lived optical birefringence in a CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$ single crystal induced by a powerful nearly single-cycle terahertz pulse. Apart from the instantaneous contribution that follows the profile of the squared pump electric field, the recorded anisotropy signal contains an exponential component decaying in $\sim$ 350 fs, underdamped oscillations at the frequency of $\sim$ 0.16 THz and an intermediate picosecond relaxation process with a Gaussian tail. We associate these three non-trivial features with, respectively, Kerr effect in the inorganic lattice, terahertz-induced…
We report a strongly temperature dependent luminescence Stokes shift in the electronic spectra of both hybrid and inorganic lead-bromide perovskite single crystals. This behavior stands in stark contrast to that exhibited by more conventional crystalline semiconductors. We correlate the electronic spectra with the anti-Stokes and Stokes Raman vibrational spectra. Dielectric solvation theories, originally developed for excited molecules dissolved in polar liquids, reproduce our experimental observations. Our approach, which invokes a classical Debye-like relaxation process, captures the dielect…
We report measurements of the heat capacity and cross-plane thermal conductivity of 2D (CxH2x+1NH3)2[MAPbBr3]n-1PbBr4 (MA = methylammonium) lead bromide perovskites (2D LHPs) at room temperature as a function of both the octahedral layer thickness (n = 1,2,3) and the organic spacer chain length (x=4,5,6,7,8) using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and frequency domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) respectively. We observe ultralow thermal conductivities (0.18-0.51 W/m K) for all 2D LHPs studied, but surprisingly minimal suppression of thermal conductivity with respect to bulk MAPbBr3 (0.5 W/m…
Perovskite nanocrystal light-emitting diodes (LEDs) employing architecture comprising a ZnO nanoparticles electron-transport layer and a conjugated polymer hole-transport layer have been fabricated. The obtained LEDs demonstrate a maximum external-quantum-efficiency of 6.04%, luminance of 12998 Cd/m2 and stable electroluminescence at 519 nm. Importantly, such high efficiency and brightness have been achieved by employing solution processed transport layers, formamidinium lead bromide nanocrystals (CH(NH2)2PbBr3 NCs) synthesized at room-temperature and in air without the use of a Schlenk line, …
We investigate the structural, electronic and optical properties of mixed bromide-iodide lead perovskite solar cell CH$_3$NH$_3$Pb(I$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_3$ by means of the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) within density functional theory (DFT). Optimizing the atomic positions and lattice parameters increasing the bromide content $x$ from 0.0 to 1.0, we fit the calculated lattice parameter and energy band gap to the linear and quadratic function of Br content, respectively, which are in good agreement with the experiment, respecting the Vegard's law. With the calculated exciton binding energy an…
Recently we proposed that defect tolerance in the hybrid perovskites is due to their characteristic low-frequency lattice phonon modes that decrease the non-adiabatic coupling and weaken the overlap between the free carrier and defect states [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)]. Kim and Walsh disagree with the interpretation and argue that there are flaws in our employed methodology. Herein we address their concerns and show that their conclusions are not valid due to misunderstandings of nonadiabatic transition.
Halide perovskites exhibit slow rates of non-radiative electron-hole recombination upon illumination. Chu et al. [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)] use the results of first-principles simulations to argue that this arises from the nature of the crystal vibrations and leads to a breakdown of Shockley-Read-Hall theory. We highlight flaws in their methodology and analysis of carrier capture by point defects in crystalline semiconductors.
Predicting the stability of the perovskite structure remains a longstanding challenge for the discovery of new functional materials for many applications including photovoltaics and electrocatalysts. We developed an accurate, physically interpretable, and one-dimensional tolerance factor, τ, that correctly predicts 92% of compounds as perovskite or nonperovskite for an experimental dataset of 576 $ABX_3$ materials ($\textit{X} =$ $O^{2-}$, $F^-$, $Cl^-$, $Br^-$, $I^-$) using a novel data analytics approach based on SISSO (sure independence screening and sparsifying operator). τ is shown to gen…
The surprising recent observation of highly emissive triplet-states in lead halide perovskites accounts for their orders-of-magnitude brighter optical signals and high quantum efficiencies compared to other semiconductors. This makes them attractive for future optoelectronic applications, especially in bright low-threshold nano-lasers. Whilst non-resonantly pumped lasing from all-inorganic lead-halide perovskites is now well-established as an attractive pathway to scalable low-power laser sources for nano-optoelectronics, here we showcase a resonant optical pumping scheme on a fast triplet-sta…
Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites containing a mixture of iodide and bromide anions consistently perform better in donor-acceptor heterojunction solar cells than the standard methylammonium lead triiodide material. This observation is counterintuitive, as it is generally expected for photovoltaic materials that heterogeneities and compositional disorder cause reduced carrier diffusion length and conversion efficiency. Here, we combine ultrafast photoinduced electroabsorption and broadband fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy measurements to scrutinize the carrier dynamics in mixed-c…
Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are nowadays one of the most studied semiconductors due to their exceptional performance as active layers in solar cells. Although MHPs are excellent solid-state semiconductors, they are also ionic compounds, where ion migration plays a decisive role in their formation, their photovoltaic performance and their long-term stability. Given the above-mentioned complexity, molecular dynamics simulations based on classical force fields are especially suited to study MHP properties, such as lattice dynamics and ion migration. In particular, the possibility to model mix…
In this study, the optoelectronic properties of a monolithically integrated series-connected tandem solar cell are simulated. Following the large success of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, which have recently demonstrated large efficiencies with low production costs, we examine the possibility of using the same perovskites as absorbers in a tandem solar cell. The cell consists in a methylammonium mixed bromide-iodide lead perovskite, CH3NH3PbI3(1-x)Br3x (0 < x < 1), top sub-cell and a single-crystalline silicon bottom sub-cell. A Si-based tunnel junction connects the two sub-cells. Numer…
With the rapid evolution of lead halide perovskite solar cells, there are considerable evidences that the mobile ions strongly impact their properties. However, except the activation energy, the other properties of ionic migration are mostly explored with first principle calculations. Here we investigate the migration of halide ion (vacancy) in lead bromide perovskite single crystalline microplates. In contrast to conventional studies with external bias voltages, we introduce built-in potentials into the microplates via low-energy electron beams and study the corresponding ionic migrations. By…
Owing to the increasing popularity of lead-based hybrid perovskites for photovoltaic (PV) applications, it is crucial to understand their defect physics and its influence on their optoelectronic properties. In this work, we simulate various point defects in pseudo-cubic structures of mixed iodide-bromide and bromide-chloride methylammonium lead perovskites with the general formula MAPbI_{3-y}Br_{y} or MAPbBr_{3-y}Cl_{y} (where y is between 0 and 3), and use first principles based density functional theory computations to study their relative formation energies and charge transition levels. We …
Much recent attention has been devoted towards unravelling the microscopic optoelectronic properties of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOP). Here we investigate by coherent inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy and Brillouin light scattering, low frequency acoustic phonons in four different hybrid perovskite single crystals: MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$ and $α$-FAPbI$_3$ (MA: methylammonium, FA: formamidinium). We report a complete set of elastic constants caracterized by a very soft shear modulus C$_{44}$. Further, a tendency towards an incipient ferroelastic transition is obs…
Electronic and stability properties of quasi-2D alkylammonium perovskites are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and validated experimentally on selected classes of compounds. Our analysis is focused on perovskite structures of formula (A)$_2$(A$'$)$_{n-1}$Pb$_n$X$_{3n+1}$, with large cations A = butyl-, pentyl-, hexylammonium (BA, PA, HXA), small cations A$'$ = methylammonium, formamidinium, ethylammonium, guanidinium (MA,FA,EA,GA) and halogens X = I, Br, Cl. The role of the halogen ions is outlined for the band structure, stability and defect formation energies. …
Single crystals of the systems Pr0.5(Ca1-xSrx)0.5MnO3, (Pr1-yYy)0.5(Ca1-xSrx)0.5MnO3, and Sm0.5Sr0.5MnO3 were grown to provide a series of samples with fixed ratio Mn(III)/Mn(IV)=1 having geometric tolerance factors that span the transition from localized to itinerant electronic behavior of the MnO3 array. A unique ferromagnetic phase appears at the critical tolerance factor tc= 0.975 that separates charge ordering and localized-electron behavior for t<tc from itinerant or molecular-orbital behavior for t>tc. This ferromagnetic phase, which has to be distinguished from the ferromagnetic metall…

Defects in halide perovskites play an essential role in determining the efficiency and stability of the resulting optoelectronic devices. Here, we present a systematic study of intrinsic point defects in six primary metal halide perovskites, MAPbI$_3$, MAPbBr$_3$, MAPbCl$_3$, FAPbI$_3$, CsPbI$_3$ and MASnI$_3$, using density functional theory calculations with the SCAN+rVV10 functional. We analyse the impact of changing anions and cations on the defect formation energies and the charge state transitions levels and identify the physical origins underlying the observed trends. Dominant defects i…
The wide band gap methylammonium lead bromide perovskite is promising for applications in tandem solar cells and light-emitting diodes. Despite its utility, there is only a limited understanding of its reproducibility and stability. Herein, the dependence of the properties, performance, and shelf storage of thin films and devices on minute changes to the precursor solution stoichiometry is examined in detail. Although photovoltaic cells based on these solution changes exhibit similar initial performance, the shelf-storage depends strongly on the precursor solution stoichiometry. While all devi…
Electronic properties and lattice vibrations are supposed to be strongly correlated in metal-halide perovskites, due to the "soft" fluctuating nature of their crystal lattice. Thus, unveiling electron-phonon coupling dynamics upon ultra-fast photoexcitation is necessary for understanding the optoelectronic behaviour of the semiconductor. Here, we use impulsive vibrational spectroscopy to reveal ground and excited state vibrational modes of methylammonium lead-bromide perovskite. We observe a coherent phonon at 106 cm-1 (13 meV), pertaining to the inorganic octahedral, which is peculiar of the …
Outstanding optoelectronic properties and a facile synthesis render halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) a promising material for nanostructure-based devices. However, the commercialization is hindered mainly by the lack of NC stability under ambient conditions and inefficient charge carrier injection. Here, we investigate solutions to both problems, employing methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr_3) NCs encapsulated in diblock copolymer core-shell micelles of tunable size. We confirm that the shell does not prohibit energy transfer, as FRET efficiencies between these NCs and 2D CsPbBr_3 nanopla…
Paper offers a low-cost and widely available substrate for electronics. It posses alternative characteristics to silicon, as it shows low density and high-flexibility, together with biodegradability. Solution processable materials, such as hybrid perovskites, also present light and flexible features, together with a huge tunability of the material composition with varying optical properties. In this study, we combine paper substrates with halide-mixed perovskites for the creation of low-cost and easy-to-fabricate perovskite-on-paper photodetectors with a broadband-tunable spectral response. Fr…
Halide perovskites are promising semiconductors for inexpensive, high-performance optoelectronics. Despite a remarkable defect tolerance compared to conventional semiconductors, perovskite thin films still show substantial microscale heterogeneity in key properties such as luminescence efficiency and device performance. This behavior has been attributed to spatial fluctuations in the population of sub-bandgap electronic states that act as trap-mediated non-radiative recombination sites. However, the origin of the variations, trap states and extent of the defect tolerance remains a topic of deb…
Using first-principles calculations, we show that CsBX$_3$ halides with B=Sn or Pb undergo octahedral rotation distortions, while for B=Ge and Si, they undergo a ferro-electric rhombohedral distortion accompanied by a rhombohedral stretching of the lattice. We show that these are mutually exclusive at their equilibrium volume although different distortions may occur as function of lattice expansion. The choice between the two distortion modes is in part governed by the Goldschmidt tolerance factor. However, another factor explaining the difference between Sn and Pb compared with Ge and Si is t…

The electronic structure evolution of deficient halide perovskites with a general formula $(A,A')_{1+x}M_{1-x}X_{3-x}$ was investigated using the density functional theory. The focus is placed on characterization of changes in the band gap, band alignment, effective mass, and optical properties of deficient perovskites at various concentrations of defects. We uncover unusual electronic properties of the defect corresponding to a $M\!-\!X$ vacancy filled with an $A'$ cation. This defect "repels" electrons and holes producing no trap states and, in moderate quantities ($x\le0.1$), does not hinde…
Symbolic regression (SR) is an emerging method for building analytical formulas to find models that best fit data sets. Here, SR was used to guide the design of new oxide perovskite catalysts with improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities. An unprecedentedly simple descriptor, μ/t, where μ and t are the octahedral and tolerance factors, respectively, was identified, which accelerated the discovery of a series of new oxide perovskite catalysts with improved OER activity. We successfully synthesized five new oxide perovskites and characterized their OER activities. Remarkably, four of …
The emergence of methyl-ammonium lead halide (MAPbX3) perovskites motivates the identification of unique properties giving rise to exceptional bulk transport properties, and identifying future materials with similar properties. Here, we propose that this "defect tolerance" emerges from fundamental electronic structure properties, including the orbital character of the conduction and valence band extrema, the effective masses, and the static dielectric constant. We use MaterialsProject.org searches and detailed electronic-structure calculations to demonstrate these properties in other materials…
The defect tolerance nature of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is reflected from its stupendous growth in photovoltaic performances. The presence of lattice defect can manipulate or even gives rise to some exceptional properties which otherwise would have remained unseen. One of such properties reported in this article is the experimental observation of defect mediated room temperature ferromagnetism in methylammonium lead halide perovskite for the very first time, ably supported by ab-initio calculations. Theoretical analysis predicts the ferromagnetism principally arises from the iodide …
The electronic structure and energetic stability of A$_2$BX$_6$ halide compounds with the cubic and tetragonal variants of the perovskite-derived K$_2$PtCl$_6$ prototype structure are investigated computationally within the frameworks of density-functional-theory (DFT) and hybrid (HSE06) functionals. The HSE06 calculations are undertaken for seven known A$_2$BX$_6$ compounds with A = K, Rb and Cs, and B = Sn, Pd, Pt, Te, and X = I. Trends in band gaps and energetic stability are identified, which are explored further employing DFT calculations over a larger range of chemistries, characterized …
