The interaction of supernova ejecta with a surrounding circumstellar medium (CSM) generates a strong shock which can convert the ejecta kinetic energy into observable radiation. Given the diversity of potential CSM structures (arising from diverse mass loss processes such as late-stage stellar outbursts, binary interaction, and winds), the resulting transients can display a wide range of light curve morphologies. We provide a framework for classifying the transients arising from interaction with a spherical CSM shell. The light curves are decomposed into five consecutive phases, starting from the onset of interaction and extending through shock breakout and subsequent shock cooling. The relative prominence of each phase in the light curve is determined by two dimensionless quantities representing the CSM-to-ejecta mass ratio $η$, and a breakout parameter $ξ$. These two parameters define four light curve morphology classes, where each class is characterized by the location of shock breakout and the degree of deceleration as the shock sweeps up the CSM. We compile analytic scaling relations connecting the luminosity and duration of each light curve phase to the physical parameters. We then run a grid of radiation hydrodynamics simulations for a wide range of ejecta and CSM parameters to numerically explore the landscape of interaction light curves, and to calibrate and confirm the analytic scalings. We connect our theoretical framework to several case studies of observed transients, highlighting the relevance in explaining slow-rising and superluminous supernovae, fast blue optical transients, and double-peaked light curves.
Optical polarimetry is an effective way of probing the environment of supernova for dust. We acquired linear HST ACS/WFC polarimetry in bands $F475W$, $F606W$, and $F775W$ of the supernova (SN) 2014J in M82 at six epochs from $\sim$277 days to $\sim$1181 days after the $B$-band maximum. The polarization measured at day 277 shows conspicuous deviations from other epochs. These differences can be attributed to at least $\sim$ 10$^{-6} M_{\odot}$ of circumstellar dust located at a distance of $\sim5\times10^{17}$ cm from the SN. The scattering dust grains revealed by these observations seem to be…
We investigate predicted circumstellar properties of Type Ia supernova progenitor systems with non-degenerate helium star donors. It has been suggested that systems consisting of a carbon+oxygen white dwarf and a helium star can lead to Type Ia supernova explosions. Binary evolution calculations for the helium star donor channel predict that such a progenitor system is in either a stable helium-shell burning phase or a weak helium-shell flash phase at the time of the Type Ia supernova explosion. By taking the binary evolution models from our previous study, we show that a large fraction of the…
Observations of Type II supernovae imply that a large fraction of its progenitors experience enhanced mass loss years to decades before core collapse, creating a dense circumstellar medium (CSM). Assuming that the CSM is produced by a single mass eruption event, we analytically model the density profile of the resulting CSM. We find that a double power-law profile, where the inner (outer) power-law index has a characteristic value of -1.5 (-10 to -12), gives a good fit to the CSM profile obtained using radiation hydrodynamical simulations. With our profile the CSM is well described by just two…
Hydrogen-rich, core-collapse supernovae are typically divided into four classes: IIP, IIL, IIn, and IIb. In general, interaction with circumstellar material is only considered for Type IIn supernovae. However, recent hydrodynamic modeling of IIP and IIL supernovae requires circumstellar material to reproduce their early light curves. In this scenario, IIL supernovae experience large amounts of mass loss before exploding. We test this hypothesis on ASASSN-15oz, a Type IIL supernova. With extensive follow-up in the X- ray, UV, optical, IR, and radio we present our search for signs of interaction…
In this note, we present a detailed self-similar solution to the interaction of a uniformly expanding gas and a stationary ambient medium, with an application to supernovae interacting with preexisting circumstellar media (Type IIn SNe). We implement the generalized solution into the Modular Open Source Fitter for Transients (MOSFiT), an open-source Python package for fitting extragalactic transient light curves.

Massive stars are characterized by a significant loss of mass either via spherically symmetric stellar winds or pre-explosion pulses, or by aspherical forms of circumstellar matter (CSM) such as bipolar lobes or outflowing circumstellar equatorial disks. A significant fraction of most massive stars end their lives by a core collapse; supernovae (SNe) are always located inside circumstellar envelopes created by their progenitors. We study the dynamics and thermal effects of collision between expanding ejecta of SNe and CSM that may be formed during, for example, a sgB[e] star phase, a luminous …
We introduce the first synthetic light-curve model set of Type IIP supernovae exploded within circumstellar media in which the acceleration of the red supergiant winds is taken into account. Because wind acceleration makes the wind velocities near the progenitors low, the density of the immediate vicinity of the red supergiant supernova progenitors can be higher than that extrapolated by using a constant terminal wind velocity. Therefore, even if the mass-loss rate of the progenitor is relatively low, it can have a dense circumstellar medium at the immediate stellar vicinity and the early ligh…
We present photometric and spectroscopic data of SN 2018lab, a low luminosity type IIP supernova (LLSN) with a V-band peak luminosity of $-15.1\pm0.1$ mag. SN 2018lab was discovered by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc (DLT40) SNe survey only 0.73 days post-explosion, as determined by observations from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TESS observations of SN 2018lab yield a densely sampled, fast-rising, early time light curve likely powered by circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction. The blue-shifted, broadened flash feature in the earliest spectra ($<$2 days) of SN 2018lab provide…
Some supernova (SN) explosions show evidence for interaction with pre-existing non-spherically symmetric circumstellar medium (CSM) in their light curves, spectral line profiles, and polarization signatures. To better understand the connection with binary stars and to aid in the interpretation of observations, we perform two-dimensional axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations where an expanding spherical SN ejecta initialized with realistic density and velocity profiles collide with various aspherical CSM distributions. We consider CSM in the form of a circumstellar disk, colliding wind shells i…
The recent study of SN 2013fs flash spectrum suggests enormous for SN IIP explosion energy, far beyond possibilities of the neutrino mechanism. The issue of the explosion energy of SN 2013fs is revisited making use of effects of the early supernova interaction with the dense circumstellar shell. The velocity of the cold dense shell between reverse and forward shocks is inferred from the analysis of the broad \heii\,4686\,Å on day 2.4. This velocity alongside with other observables provide us with an alternative energy estimate of $\sim1.8\times10^{51}$\,erg for the preferred mass of $\sim10$\m…
In the last 20 years, modern wide-field surveys discovered a new class of peculiar transients, which lie in the luminosity gap between standard supernovae and classical novae. These transients are often called 'intermediate luminosity optical transients' or 'gap transients'. They are usually distinguished in subgroups based on their phenomenology, such as supernova impostors, intermediate luminosity red transients, and luminous red novae. In this review, we present a brief overview of their observational features and possible physical scenarios to date, in the attempt to understand their natur…
Using ultraviolet (UV) light curves we constrain the circumstellar environments of 1080 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) within $z<0.5$ from archival Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations. All SNe Ia are required to have pre- and post-explosion GALEX observations to ensure adequate subtraction of the host-galaxy flux. Using the late-time GALEX observations we look for the UV excess expected from any interaction between the SN ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM). Four SNe Ia are detected near maximum light and we compare the GALEX photometry to archival data, but we find none of our tar…
Type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP) often show relatively high continuum polarization ($\sim 1$\%) in the late phase. This polarization feature is generally believed to be due to an inner aspherical core revealed in the late phase, while this polarization feature can also be contributed by the effect of polarized-scattered echoes by circumstellar (CS) dust around the SN. In this paper, we propose a unique method to distinguish polarization from the SN ejecta and from the light echo. We quantitatively examine wavelength dependence of the polarization created by the scattered echoes for various geomet…
This paper describes the rapidly evolving and unusual supernova LSQ13ddu, discovered by the La Silla-QUEST survey. LSQ13ddu displayed a rapid rise of just 4.8$\pm$0.9 d to reach a peak brightness of $-$19.70$\pm$0.02 mag in the $\mathit{LSQgr}$ band. Early spectra of LSQ13ddu showed the presence of weak and narrow He I features arising from interaction with circumstellar material (CSM). These interaction signatures weakened quickly, with broad features consistent with those seen in stripped-envelope SNe becoming dominant around two weeks after maximum. The narrow He I velocities are consistent…
On the 'snow-plow' phase of supernovae interacting with dense circumstellar media
Observational signatures of the circumstellar material (CSM) around Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) provide a unique perspective on their progenitor systems. The pre-supernova evolution of the SN progenitors may naturally eject CSM in most of the popular scenarios of SN Ia explosions. In this study, we investigate the influence of dust scattering on the light curves and polarizations of SNe Ia. A Monte Carlo method is constructed to numerically solve the process of radiative transfer through the CSM. Three types of geometric distributions of the CSM are considered: spherical shell, axisymmetric di…
We perform a series of two-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the collision between supernova ejecta and circumstellar media (CSM). The hydrodynamic interaction of a fast flow and the surrounding media efficiently dissipates the kinetic energy of the fast flow and considered as a dominant energy source for a specific class of core-collapse supernovae. Despite some observational evidence for aspherical ejecta and/or CSM structure, multi-dimensional effects in the ejecta-CSM interaction are relatively unexplored. Our numerical simulations equipped with an adaptive mesh refinement …
We investigate broad-band emission from supernova ejecta powered by a relativistic wind from a central compact object. A recent two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation studying the dynamical evolution of supernova ejecta with a central energy source has revealed that outermost layers of the ejecta are accelerated to mildly relativistic velocities because of the breakout of a hot bubble driven by the energy injection. The outermost layers decelerate as they sweep a circumstellar medium surrounding the ejecta, leading to the formation of the forward and reverse shocks propagating in the circumst…
Double peaked light curves are observed for some Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic) including LSQ14efd, iPTF15dtg and SN 2020bvc. One possible explanation of the first peak would be shock-cooling emission from massive extended material around the progenitor, which is produced by mass eruption or rapid expansion of the outermost layers of the progenitor shortly before the supernova explosion. We investigate the effects of such circumstellar matter (CSM) on the multi-band optical light curves of SNe Ic using the radiation hydrodynamics code STELLA. Two different SNe Ic progenitor masses at the pre-SN s…
We report on the result of He abundance analysis of dense circumstellar clumps in the young supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. These clumps, which are called quasi-stationary flocculi (QSFs), are known from previous optical studies to be enriched in He along with N, but the degree of He overabundance relative to H has remained uncertain. For several QSFs with near-infrared spectroscopic data, we have analyzed their He I 1.083 $μ$m/Pa$γ$ ratios together with the ratios of [Fe II] lines by using the Raymond shock code. According to our analysis, He is overabundant relative to H by a factor of $\les…
It has been well established from a variety of observations that red supergiants (RSGs) loose a lot of mass in stellar wind. Dust formed in this emitted gas over a few decades before core-collapse can lead to substantial extinction and obscure the intrinsic luminosity of the progenitor RSG. This may lead to a difficulty in determining the range of progenitor masses that lead to the different classes of supernovae. Even the nearby, well studied supernovae with pre-explosion observations, such as SN 2013ej may suffer from this uncertainty in the progenitor mass. We explore here two different mas…
SN 2017eaw, the tenth supernova observed in NGC 6946, was a normal Type II-P supernova with an estimated 11 - 13 Msun supergiant progenitor. Here we present nebular phase spectra of SN 2017eaw at +545 and +900 days post-max, extending approximately 50 - 400 days past the epochs of previously published spectra. While the +545 day spectra is similar to spectra taken between days +400 and +493, the +900 day spectrum shows dramatic changes both in spectral features and emission line profiles. The Halpha emission is flat-topped and box-like with sharp blue and red profile velocities of ~ -8000 and …

The interaction of a SN ejecta with a pre-existing circumstellar material (CSM) is one of the most promising energy sources for a variety of optical transients. Recently, a semi-analytic method developed by Chatzopoulos et al. (2012, hereafter CWV12) has been commonly used to describe the optical light curve behaviors under such a scenario. We find that the expressions for many key results in CWV12 are too complicated for readers to make order of magnitude estimation or parameter dependency judgement. Based on the same physical picture, here we independently re-derive all the formulae and re-e…
In a supernova explosion, the ejecta interacting with the surrounding circumstellar medium (CSM) give rise to variety of radiation. Since CSM is created from the mass lost from the progenitor star, it carries footprints of the late time evolution of the star. This is one of the unique ways to get a handle on the nature of the progenitor star system. Here, I will focus mainly on the supernovae (SNe) exploding in dense environments, a.k.a. Type IIn SNe. Radio and X-ray emission from this class of SNe have revealed important modifications in their radiation properties, due to the presence of high…
Recent supernova searches revealed a number of fast-evolving luminous transients. We perform radiation hydrodynamic simulations of light curves of several models of supernova from super--asymptotic giant branch (super-AGB, SAGB) stars with low mass envelopes ($M_{\rm env}$ $\sim$ $0.05-1.25$ $M_{\odot}$). The differences in the light curves found among the models are used to link the observed events to the most appropriate models. In particular, we propose that KSN 2015K is an electron-capture supernova. We assume "optically" thick CSM around SAGB and the circumstellar interaction powers the p…
Type II supernovae (SNe) interacting with disklike circumstellar matter (CSM) have been suggested as an explanation of some unusual Type II SNe, e.g., the so-called "impossible" SN, iPTF14hls. There are some radiation hydrodynamics simulations for such SNe interacting with a CSM disk. However, such disk interaction models so far have not included the effect of the ionization and recombination processes in the SN ejecta, i.e., the fact that the photosphere of Type IIP SNe between $\sim 10$-$\sim 100$ days is regulated by the hydrogen recombination front. We calculate light curves for Type IIP S…
The dominant mechanism and time scales over which stripped-envelope supernovae (SNe) progenitor stars shed their hydrogen envelopes are uncertain. Observations of Type Ib and Ic SNe at late phases could reveal the optical signatures of interaction with distant circumstellar material (CSM) providing important clues on the origin of the necessary pre-SN mass loss. We report deep late-time optical spectroscopy of the Type Ib explosion SN 2004dk 4684 days (13 years) after discovery. Prominent intermediate-width H-alpha emission is detected, signaling that the SN blast wave has caught up with the h…
The nature of an emerging class of rapidly fading supernovae (RFSNe)--characterized by their short-lived light curve duration, but varying widely in peak brightness--remains puzzling. Whether the RFSNe arise from low-mass thermonuclear eruptions on white dwarfs or from the core collapse of massive stars is still a matter of dispute. We explore the possibility that the explosion of hydrogen-free massive stars could produce bright but rapidly fading transients if the effective pre-supernova radii are large and if little or no radioactive nickel is ejected. The source of radiation is then purely …
