The recent study of SN 2013fs flash spectrum suggests enormous for SN IIP explosion energy, far beyond possibilities of the neutrino mechanism. The issue of the explosion energy of SN 2013fs is revisited making use of effects of the early supernova interaction with the dense circumstellar shell. The velocity of the cold dense shell between reverse and forward shocks is inferred from the analysis of the broad \heii\,4686\,Å on day 2.4. This velocity alongside with other observables provide us with an alternative energy estimate of $\sim1.8\times10^{51}$\,erg for the preferred mass of $\sim10$\msun. The inferred value is within the range of the neutrino driven explosion.
We present observations and analysis of SN 2020cxd, a Low luminous (LL), long-lived Type IIP SN. This object was a clear outlier in the magnitude-limited SN sample recently presented by the ZTF Bright Transient Survey. We demonstrate that SN 2020cxd is an additional member of the group of LL SNe, and discuss the rarity of LL SNe in the context of the ZTF survey, and how further studies of these faintest members of the CC SN family might help understand the underlying initial mass function for stars that explode.
We show how the dense shells of circumstellar gas immediately outside the red supergiants (RSGs) can affect the early optical light curves of Type II-P SNe taking the example of SN 2013ej. The peak in V, R and I bands, decline rate after peak and plateau length are found to be strongly influenced by the dense CSM formed due to enhanced mass loss during the oxygen and silicon burning stage of the progenitor. We find that the required explosion energy for the progenitors with CSM is reduced by almost a factor of 2.
The unusual Type IIP SN 2017gmr is revisited in order to pinpoint the origin of its anomalous features, including the peculiar light curve after about 100 days. The hydrodynamic modelling suggests the enormous explosion energy of about 10^52 erg. We find that the light curve with the prolonged plateau/tail transition can be reproduced either in the model with a high hydrogen abundance in the inner ejecta and a large amount of radioactive Ni-56, or in the model with an additional central energy source associated with the fallback/magnetar interaction in the propeller regime. The asymmetry of th…
Type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP), which represent the most common class of core-collapse (CC) SNe, show a rapid increase in continuum polarization just after entering the tail phase. This feature can be explained by a highly asymmetric helium core, which is exposed when the hydrogen envelope becomes transparent. Here we report the case of a SN IIP (SN~2017gmr) that shows an unusually early rise of the polarization, $\gtrsim 30$ days before the start of the tail phase. This implies that SN~2017gmr is an SN IIP that has very extended asphericity. The asymmetries are not confined to the helium core,…
While interaction with circumstellar material is known to play an important role in Type IIn supernovae (SNe), analyses of the more common SNe IIP and IIL have not traditionally included interaction as a significant power source. However, recent campaigns to observe SNe within days of explosion have revealed narrow emission lines of high-ionization species in the earliest spectra of luminous SNe II of all subclasses. These "flash ionization" features indicate the presence of a confined shell of material around the progenitor star. Here we present the first low-luminosity (LL) SN to show flash …
The majority of Type II-plateau supernovae (SNe IIP) have light curves that are not compatible with the explosions of stars in a vacuum; instead, the light curves require the progenitors to be embedded in circumstellar matter (CSM). We report on the successful fitting of the well-observed SN IIP 2021yja as a core-collapse explosion of a massive star with an initial mass of ~15 Msun and a pre-explosion radius of 631 Rsun. To explain the early-time behaviour of the broad-band light curves, the presence of 0.55 Msun CSM within ~2x10^14 cm is needed. Like many other SNe IIP, SN 2021yja exhibits an…
The early rise of Type IIP supernovae (SN IIP) provides important information for constraining the properties of their progenitors. This can in turn be compared to pre-explosion imaging constraints and stellar models to develop a more complete picture of how massive stars evolve and end their lives. Using the SuperNova Explosion Code (SNEC), we model the first 40 days of SNe IIP to better understand what constraints can be derived from their early light curves. We use two sets of red supergiant progenitor models with zero-age main sequence masses in the range between 9 Msol and 20 Msol. We fin…
Type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP) often show relatively high continuum polarization ($\sim 1$\%) in the late phase. This polarization feature is generally believed to be due to an inner aspherical core revealed in the late phase, while this polarization feature can also be contributed by the effect of polarized-scattered echoes by circumstellar (CS) dust around the SN. In this paper, we propose a unique method to distinguish polarization from the SN ejecta and from the light echo. We quantitatively examine wavelength dependence of the polarization created by the scattered echoes for various geomet…
We present six epochs of optical spectropolarimetry of the Type IIP supernova (SN) 2021yja ranging from $\sim$ 25 to 95 days after the explosion. An unusually high continuum linear polarization of $p \sim 0.9\%$ is measured during the early photospheric phase, followed by a steady decrease well before the onset of the nebular phase. This behavior has not been observed before in Type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP). The observed continuum polarization angle does not change significantly during the photospheric phase. We find a pronounced axis of symmetry in the global ejecta that is shared in common w…
SN 2009kf is an exceptionally bright Type IIP Supernova (SN IIP) discovered by the Pan-STARRS 1 survey. The $V$-band magnitude at the plateau phase is $M_{V} = -18.4$ mag, which is much brighter than typical SNe IIP. We propose that its unusual properties can be naturally explained, if we assume that there was an super-Eddington energy injection into the envelope in the last few years of the evolution before the SN explosion. Using a progenitor model with such an pre-SN energy injection, we can fit the observational data of SN 2009kf with the reasonable explosion energy of $E_{\mathrm{exp}} = …
We present the results the photometric observations of the Type IIP supernova SN 2012aw obtained for the time interval from 7 till 371 days after the explosion. Using the previously published values of the photospheric velocities we've computed the hydrodynamic model which simultaneously reproduced the photometry observations and velocity measurements. The model was calculated with the multi-energy group radiation hydrodynamics code STELLA. We found the parameters of the pre-supernova: radius $R = 500 R_\odot$, nickel mass $M(^{56}$Ni$)$ $\sim 0.06 M_\odot$, pre-supernova mass $25 M_\odot$, ma…
We introduce the first synthetic light-curve model set of Type IIP supernovae exploded within circumstellar media in which the acceleration of the red supergiant winds is taken into account. Because wind acceleration makes the wind velocities near the progenitors low, the density of the immediate vicinity of the red supergiant supernova progenitors can be higher than that extrapolated by using a constant terminal wind velocity. Therefore, even if the mass-loss rate of the progenitor is relatively low, it can have a dense circumstellar medium at the immediate stellar vicinity and the early ligh…
Type II-plateau supernovae (SNe IIP) are the most numerous subclass of core-collapse SNe originating from massive stars. In the framework of the neutrino-driven explosion mechanism, we study the SN outburst properties for a red supergiant progenitor model and compare the corresponding light curves with observations of the ordinary Type IIP SN 1999em. Three-dimensional (3D) simulations of (parametrically triggered) neutrino-driven explosions are performed with the (explicit, finite-volume, Eulerian, multifluid hydrodynamics) code PROMETHEUS, using a presupernova model of a 15 Msun star as initi…
The progenitors of Type IIP supernovae (SNe) are known to be red supergiants, but their properties are not well determined. We employ hydrodynamical modelling to investigate the explosion characteristics of eight Type IIP supernovae, and the properties of their progenitor stars. We create evolutionary models using the {\sc MESA} stellar evolution code, explode these models, and simulate the optical lightcurves using the {\sc STELLA} code. We fit the optical lightcurves, Fe II 5169Å velocity, and photospheric velocity, to the observational data. Recent research has suggested that the progenitor…
We present optical and near-infrared observations of a low-luminosity Type IIP supernova (SN) 2016bkv from the initial rising phase to the plateau phase. Our observations show that the end of the plateau is extended to $\gtrsim 140$ days since the explosion, indicating that this SN takes one of the longest time to finish the plateau phase. among Type IIP SNe (SNe IIP), including low-luminosity (LL) SNe IIP. The line velocities of various ions at the middle of the plateau phase are as low as 1,000--1,500 km s$^{-1}$, which is the lowest even among LL SNe IIP. These measurements imply that the e…
We investigate the properties of Type IIP supernovae that are dominantly powered by the rotational kinetic energy of the newly born neutron star. While the spin-down of a magnetar has previously been proposed as a viable energy source in the context of super-luminous supernovae, we show that a similar mechanism could produce both normal and peculiar Type IIP supernova light curves from red supergiant progenitors for a range of initial spin periods and equivalent dipole magnetic field strengths. Although the formation channel for such magnetars in a typical red supergiant progenitor is unknown,…
With the aim of improving our knowledge about the nature of the progenitors of low-luminosity Type II plateau supernovae (LL SNe IIP), we made radiation-hydrodynamical models of the well-sampled LL SNe IIP 2003Z, 2008bk and 2009md. For these three SNe we infer explosion energies of $0.16$-$0.18$ foe, radii at explosion of $1.8$-$3.5 \times 10^{13}$ cm, and ejected masses of $10$-$11.3$\Msun. The estimated progenitor mass on the main sequence is in the range $\sim 13.2$-$15.1$\Msun\, for SN 2003Z and $\sim 11.4$-$12.9$\Msun\, for SNe 2008bk and 2009md, in agreement with estimates from observati…
We present one year of optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type IIP SNe 2013K and 2013am. Both objects are affected by significant extinction, due to their location in dusty regions of their respective host galaxies, ESO 009-10 and NGC 3623 (M65). From the photospheric to nebular phases, these objects display spectra congruent with those of underluminous Type IIP SNe (i.e. the archetypal SNe 1997D or 2005cs), showing low photospheric velocities (~2 X 10**3 km/s at 50d) together with features arising from Ba II which are particularly prominent in faint SNe IIP. The peak…
Type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP) are the most common class of core-collapse SNe. They often show rapid increase of polarization degree in the late phase. This time evolution is generally believed to originate from the emergence of an inner aspherical core, while an effect of polarized-scattered echoes by circumstellar (CS) dust around the SN may also substantially contribute to this polarization feature. In this study, we examine the effects of the scatted echoes on the SN polarization through radiative transfer simulations for various geometry and amount of CS dust. It has been found that asymme…
We present multi-band ultraviolet and optical light curves, as well as visual-wavelength and near-infrared spectroscopy of the Type II linear (IIL) supernova (SN) 2013by. We show that SN 2013by and other SNe IIL in the literature, after their linear decline phase that start after maximum, have a sharp light curve decline similar to that seen in Type II plateau (IIP) supernovae. This light curve feature has rarely been observed in other SNe IIL due to their relative rarity and the intrinsic faintness of this particular phase of the light curve. We suggest that the presence of this drop could be…
We present optical photometry and spectroscopy from about a week after explosion to $\sim$272 d of an atypical Type IIP supernova, SN 2015ba, which exploded in the edge-on galaxy IC 1029. SN 2015ba is a luminous event with an absolute V-band magnitude of -17.1$\pm$0.2 mag at 50 d since explosion and has a long plateau lasting for $\sim$123 d. The distance to the SN is estimated to be 34.8$\pm$0.7 Mpc using the expanding photosphere and standard candle methods. High-velocity H-Balmer components constant with time are observed in the late-plateau phase spectra of SN 2015ba, which suggests a poss…
SN 2020cxd is a representative of the family of low-energy, underluminous Type IIP supernovae (SNe), whose observations and analysis were recently reported by Yang et al. (2021). Here we re-evaluate the observational data for the diagnostic SN properties by employing the hydrodynamic explosion model of a 9 MSun red supergiant progenitor with an iron core and a pre-collapse mass of 8.75 Msun. The explosion of the star was obtained by the neutrino-driven mechanism in a fully self-consistent simulation in three dimensions (3D). Multi-band light curves and photospheric velocities for the plateau p…

SN 2024abfl是一种低光度IIP型超新星,其低膨胀速度和早期喷流物质相互作用提供了关于前身体和喷流物质的新见解。
We present extensive ultraviolet (UV) and optical photometry, as well as dense optical spectroscopy for type II Plateau (IIP) supernova SN 2016X that exploded in the nearby ($\sim$ 15 Mpc) spiral galaxy UGC 08041. The observations span the period from 2 to 180 days after the explosion; in particular, the Swift UV data probably captured the signature of shock breakout associated with the explosion of SN 2016X. It shows very strong UV emission during the first week after explosion, with contribution of $\sim$ 20 -- 30% to the bolometric luminosity (versus $\lesssim$ 15% for normal SNe IIP). More…
We presented a detailed analysis of progenitor properties of type IIP supernova 2017eaw in NGC 6946, based on the pre-explosion images and early-time observations obtained immediately after the explosion. An unusually red star, with M$_{F814W}$ = $-$6.9 mag and m$_{F606W}$$-$ m$_{F814W}=$2.9$\pm$0.2 mag, can be identified at the SN position in the pre-discovery Hubble Space Telescope(HST) images taken in 2016. The observed spectral energy distribution of this star, covering the wavelength of 0.6-2.0$\ \mathrm{μm}$, matches that of an M4-type red supergiant (RSG) with a temperature of about 355…
We determine the oxygen density in the central zone of nine type IIP supernovae (SN~IIP) at the nebular stage using oxygen doublet [O I] 6300, 6364 Å. Combined with two available estimates these data indicate that oxygen densities on day 300 are distributed in rather narrow range $(2.3\pm1)\times10^9$ cm$^{-3}$. The result does not depend on the distance, extinction, or model assumptions. We demonstrate that the found density distribution suggests that the explosion energy of SN~IIP increases with the stellar mass.
Type II supernovae (SNe) interacting with disklike circumstellar matter (CSM) have been suggested as an explanation of some unusual Type II SNe, e.g., the so-called "impossible" SN, iPTF14hls. There are some radiation hydrodynamics simulations for such SNe interacting with a CSM disk. However, such disk interaction models so far have not included the effect of the ionization and recombination processes in the SN ejecta, i.e., the fact that the photosphere of Type IIP SNe between $\sim 10$-$\sim 100$ days is regulated by the hydrogen recombination front. We calculate light curves for Type IIP S…
Motivated by a recent discovery of Supernova 2010gx and numerical results of Fryer et al.(2010), we simulate light curves for several type I supernova models, enshrouded by dense circumstellar shells, or "super-wind", rich in carbon and oxygen and having no hydrogen. We demonstrate that the most luminous events like SN2010gx can be explained by those models at moderate explosion energies (2-3) foe if the total mass of SN ejecta and a shell is (3-5) Msun and the radius of the shell is ~10^{16} cm.
We present optical photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic observations of the Type II plateau supernova (SN) 2008in, which occurred in the outskirts of the nearly face-on spiral galaxy M 61. Photometric data in the X-rays, ultraviolet and near-infrared bands have been used to characterize this event. The SN field was imaged with the ROTSE-IIIb optical telescope about seven days before the explosion. This allowed us to constrain the epoch of the shock breakout to JD = 2454825.6. The duration of the plateau phase, as derived from the photometric monitoring, was ~ 98 days. The spectra of SN…
Observations of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) reveal a wealth of information about the dynamics of the supernova ejecta and its composition but very little direct information about the progenitor. Constraining properties of the progenitor and the explosion requires coupling the observations with a theoretical model of the explosion. Here, we begin with the CCSN simulations of Couch et al 2020 ApJ 890 127, which use a non-parametric treatment of the neutrino transport while also accounting for turbulence and convection. In this work we use the SuperNova Explosion Code to evolve the CCSN hydr…
Supernova 2012A was discovered on 7.39UT, January, 2012 in the nearby galaxy NGC 3239 at an unfiltered magnitude of 14.6 and classified spectroscopically as a Type IIP event. Here, we present the optical photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of the event during 14d to 130d post explosion.
I explore a phenomenon of the circumstellar H alpha and H beta absorption lines in the spectrum of luminous type IIL SN 2008fq taken on day 6.8 after the discovery. The absorpion is identified with the radiatively accelerated preshock wind up to ~800 km/s. The required initial luminosity is attributed to the earlier circumstellar interaction with the confined dense shell of ~0.08 Msun. The modelling of similar luminous type IIL SN 1998S based on the same approach results in the comparable shell mass of ~0.1 Msun. More than 1 dex larger mass of the confined dense shell of both SNe IIL compared …
We present densely-sampled ultraviolet/optical photometric and low-resolution optical spectroscopic observations of the type IIP supernova 2013ab in the nearby ($\sim$24 Mpc) galaxy NGC 5669, from 2 to 190d after explosion. Continuous photometric observations, with the cadence of typically a day to one week, were acquired with the 1-2m class telescopes in the LCOGT network, ARIES telescopes in India and various other telescopes around the globe. The light curve and spectra suggest that the SN is a normal type IIP event with a plateau duration of $ \sim80 $ days with mid plateau absolute visual…
I explore the origin of an asymmetry of the H$α$ emission from a circumstellar (CS) shell around type IIP supernova SN 2013fs in the spectrum taken 10.3\,h after the shock breakout. A spherical model of the H$α$ emission from the CS shell that takes into account a preshock gas acceleration by the supernova radiation permits us to successfully reproduce the \ha H$α$ profile. Principal factors responsible for the H$α$ asymmetry are the high velocity of the accelerated CS preshock gas ($\sim 3000$\,km s$^{-1}$) and a low H$α$ Sobolev optical depth in a combination with an occultation of the H$α$ …
A possibility is explored to account for the light curve and the low expansion velocity of the supernova SN~2011ht, a member of group of three objects showing signatures of both IIn and IIP supernovae. It is argued that the radiated energy and the expansion velocity are consistent with the low energy explosion ($\approx6\times10^{49}$ erg) and $\leq 2 M_{\odot}$ ejecta interacting with the circumstellar envelope of $6-8 M_{\odot}$ and the radius of $~2\times10^{14}$ cm. The test of this scenario is proposed.
It has been well established from a variety of observations that red supergiants (RSGs) loose a lot of mass in stellar wind. Dust formed in this emitted gas over a few decades before core-collapse can lead to substantial extinction and obscure the intrinsic luminosity of the progenitor RSG. This may lead to a difficulty in determining the range of progenitor masses that lead to the different classes of supernovae. Even the nearby, well studied supernovae with pre-explosion observations, such as SN 2013ej may suffer from this uncertainty in the progenitor mass. We explore here two different mas…

We present three epochs of early-time ultraviolet (UV) and optical HST/STIS spectroscopy of the young, nearby Type IIP supernova (SN) 2021yja. We complement the HST data with two earlier epochs of Swift UVOT spectroscopy. The HST and Swift UVOT spectra are consistent with those of other well-studied Type IIP supernovae (SNe). The UV spectra exhibit rapid cooling at early times, while less dramatic changes are seen in the optical. We also present Lick/KAIT optical photometry up to the late-time-tail phase, showing a very long plateau and shallow decline compared with other SNe IIP. Our modeling…
Extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations are presented for SN 2014cx, a type IIP supernova (SN) exploding in the nearby galaxy NGC 337. The observations are performed in optical and ultraviolet bands, covering from -20 to +400 days from the peak light. The stringent detection limit from prediscovery images suggests that this supernova was actually detected within about 1 day after explosion. Evolution of the very early-time light curve of SN 2014cx is similar to that predicted from a shock breakout and post-shock cooling decline before reaching the optical peak. Our photometric obs…

Massive stars undergo fundamental-mode and first-overtone radial pulsations with periods of 100-1000 days as Red Supergiants (RSGs). At large amplitudes, these pulsations substantially modify the outer envelope's density structure encountered by the outgoing shock wave from the eventual core collapse of these $M>9M_\odot$ stars. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), we model the effects of fundamental-mode and first-overtone pulsations in the RSG envelopes, and the resulting Type IIP supernovae (SNe) using MESA+STELLA. We find that, in the case of fundamental mode pulsa…
We present synthetic light curves of fallback-powered supernovae based on a neutrino-driven explosion of a 40 Msun zero-metallicity star with significant fallback accretion onto a black hole that was previously simulated by Chan et al. (2018) until shock breakout. Here, we investigate the light curve properties of the explosion after shock breakout for various fallback models. Without extra power from fallback accretion, the light curve is that of a Type IIP supernova with a plateau magnitude of around -14 mag and a plateau duration of 40 days. With extra power for the light curve from fallbac…
We use the results of a supernova light-curve population synthesis to predict the range of possible supernova light curves arising from a population of single-star progenitors that lead to type IIP supernovae. We calculate multiple models varying the initial mass, explosion energy, nickel mass and nickel mixing and then compare these to type IIP supernovae with detailed light curve data and pre-explosion imaging progenitor constraints. Where a good fit is obtained to observations, we are able to achieve initial progenitor and nickel mass estimates from the supernova lightcurve that are compara…
Context: The study of radio emission from core-collapse supernovae (SNe) probes the interaction of the ejecta with the circumstellar medium (CSM) and reveals details of the mass-loss history of the progenitor. Aims: We report observations of the type IIP supernova SN\,2016X during the plateau phase, at ages between 21 and 75 days, obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio observatory. Methods: We modelled the radio spectra as self-absorbed synchrotron emission, and we characterised the shockwave and the mass-loss rate of the progenitor. We also combined our results with pre…
We perform one-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of energetic supernova ejecta colliding with a massive circumstellar medium (CSM) aiming at explaining SN 2016aps, likely the brightest supernova observed to date. SN 2016aps was a superluminous Type-IIn SN, which released as much as $\gtrsim 5\times 10^{51}$ erg of thermal radiation. Our results suggest that the multi-band light curve of SN 2016aps is well explained by the collision of a $30\ M_\odot$ SN ejecta with the explosion energy of $10^{52}$ erg and a $\simeq 8\ M_\odot$ wind-like CSM with the outer radius of $10^{16}$ cm, …
