The work analyzed the positioning of IRS over the coverage region of micro cell to derive optimal placement location to support cell-edge Internet of Things (IoT) devices with a favorable signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR). Moreover, the work derived that the implementation of IRS significantly enhances energy efficiency notably reducing the transmit power of the micro cell base station.
The received signal strength (RSS) based technique is widely utilized for ubiquitous positioning due to its advantage of simple implementability. However, its accuracy is limited because the RSS values of adjacent locations can be very difficult to distinguish. Against this background, we propose the novel RSS-based positioning scheme enabled by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). By modifying the reflection coefficient of the RIS, the propagation channels are programmed in such a way that the differences between the RSS values of adjacent locations can be enlarged to improve the positio…
A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) consists of massive meta elements, which results in a reflection path between a base station (BS) and user equipment (UE). In wireless localization, this reflection path aids in positioning accuracy, especially when the line-of-sight (LOS) path is subject to severe blockage and fading. We develop a RIS-aided positioning framework to locate a UE in environments where the LOS path may or may not be available. We first estimate the RIS-aided channel parameters from the received signals at the UE. To reduce algorithmic complexity, we propose a linear comb…

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning systems. In this paper, we consider multiple mobile users (MUs) positioning problem in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-division duplex (TDD) mmWave systems aided by the RIS. We derive the expression for the space-time channel response vector (STCRV) as a novel type of fingerprint. The STCRV consists of the multipath channel characteristics, e.g., time delay and angle of arrival (AOA), which is related to the position of the MU. By using the STCRV as input, we propose a nove…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based communications have emerged as a new paradigm. In other words, DRM can release the intricate and resource-consuming channel estimation in the transmission process. Simulation results show t…

In this paper, we derive the uplink achievable rate expression of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, taking into account the phase noise at IRS and the quantization error at base stations (BSs). We show that the performance is limited only by the resolution of analog-digital converters (ADCs) at BSs when the number of IRS reflectors grows without bound. On the other hand, if BSs have ideal ADCs, the performance loss caused by IRS phase noise is a constant.
