Two-dimensional ($2$D) semi-Dirac systems, such as $2$D black phosphorus and arsenene, can exhibit a rich topological phase transition between insulating, semi-Dirac, and band inversion phases when subjected to an external modulation. How these phase transitions manifest within the quantum transport and shot noise signatures remain an open question thus far. Here, we show that the Fano factor converges to the universal $F\approx0.179$ at the semi-Dirac phase, and transits between the sub-Poissonian ($F\approx1/3$) and the Poissonian shot noise ($F\approx1$) limit at the band inversion and the insulating phase, respectively. Furthermore, the conductance of $2$D semi-Dirac system converges to the contrasting limit of $G/G_0 \rightarrow 1/d$ and $G/G_0 \rightarrow0$ at the band inversion and the insulating phases, respectively. The quantum tunneling spectra exhibits a peculiar coexistence of massless and massive Dirac quasiparticles in the band inversion regime, thus providing a versatile sandbox to study the tunneling behavior of various Dirac quasiparticles. These findings reveal the rich interplay between band topology and quantum transport signatures, which may serve as smoking gun signatures for the experimental studies of semi-Dirac systems near topological phase transition.
Random fluctuations of the shot-noise power in disordered graphene nanoribbons are studied. In particular, we calculate the distribution of the shot noise of nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edge terminations. We show that the shot noise statistics is different for each type of these two graphene structures, which is a consequence of presence of different electron localizations: while in zigzag nanoribbons electronic edge states are Anderson localized, in armchair nanoribbons edge states are absent, but electrons are anomalously localized. Our analytical results are verified by tight bindi…
We calculate conductance and noise for quantum transport at the nodal point for arbitrarily tilted and anisotropic Dirac or Weyl cones. Tilted and anisotropic dispersions are generic in absence of certain discrete symmetries, such as particle-hole and lattice point group symmetries. Whereas anisotropy affects the conductance g, but leaves the Fano factor F (the ratio of shot noise power and current) unchanged, a tilt affects both g and F. Since F is a universal number in many other situations, this finding is remarkable. We apply our general considerations to specific lattice models of straine…
We demonstrate theoretically that the characteristic feature of a 2D system undergoing $N$ consequent Lifshitz topological transitions is the occurrence of spikes of entropy per particle $s$ of a magnitude $\pm \ln 2/(J-1/2)$ with $2 \leq J \leq N$ at low temperatures. We derive a general expression for $s$ as a function of chemical potential, temperature and gap magnitude for the gapped Dirac materials. Inside the smallest gap, the dependence of $s$ on the chemical potential exhibits a dip-and-peak structure in the temperature vicinity of the Dirac point. The spikes of the entropy per particl…
We report simultaneous measurement of shot noise and dc transport in a quantum point contact as a function of source-drain bias, gate voltage, and in-plane magnetic field. Shot noise at zero field exhibits an asymmetry related to the 0.7 structure in conductance. The asymmetry in noise evolves smoothly into the symmetric signature of spin-resolved electron transmission at high field. Comparison to a phenomenological model with density-dependent level splitting yields good quantitative agreement.
We consider the optical and transport properties in a model two-dimensional Hamiltonian which describes the merging of two Dirac points. At low energy, in the presence of an energy gap parameter $Δ$, there are two distinct Dirac points with linear dispersion, these are connected by a saddle point at higher energy. As $Δ$ goes to zero, the two Dirac points merge and the resulting dispersion exhibits semi-Dirac behaviour which is quadratic in the $x$-direction ("nonrelativistic") and linear the $y$-direction ("relativistic").In the clean limit for each direction ($x,y$) the contribution of the i…
We consider theoretically as a function of temperature the plasmon mode arising in three-dimensional Dirac liquids, i.e., systems with linear chiral relativistic single-particle dispersion, within the random phase approximation. We find that whereas no plasmon mode exists in the intrinsic (undoped) system at zero temperature, there is a well-defined finite-temperature plasmon with superlinear temperature dependence, rendering the plasmon dispersion widely tunable with temperature. The plasmon dispersion contains a logarithmic correction due to the ultraviolet-logarithmic renormalization of the…
We study the persistent current in a one dimensional Dirac ring and show that the change of spin current with respect to an applied perpendicular electric field can be used to identify the topological phases. We further study the effect of Rashba spin orbit coupling and show that the Aharonov-Casher phase appearing due to Rashba spin orbit coupling vanishes in topologically nontrivial regime and thus can identify the topological phases. This Aharonov-Casher phase causes a finite spin-valley current in presence of valley mixing perturbation and is thus useful to detect the topological phases ev…
The spin-momentum locking of topological states offers an ideal platform to explore novel magneto-electric effects. These intimately depend on the ability to manipulate the spin texture in a controlled way. Here, we combine scanning tunneling microscopy with single atoms deposition to map the evolution of topological states under the influence of different magnetic perturbations. We obtain signatures of Dirac fermion-mediated magnetic order for extremely dilute adatoms concentrations. This striking observation is found to critically depend on the single adatoms magnetic anisotropy and the posi…
We calculate the mode-dependent transmission probability of massless Dirac fermions through an ideal strip of graphene (length L, width W, no impurities or defects), to obtain the conductance and shot noise as a function of Fermi energy. We find that the minimum conductivity of order e^2/h at the Dirac point (when the electron and hole excitations are degenerate) is associated with a maximum of the Fano factor (the ratio of noise power and mean current). For short and wide graphene strips the Fano factor at the Dirac point equals 1/3, three times smaller than for a Poisson process. This is the…
We investigate the effect of interactions on shot noise in $ν=2$ quantum Hall edges, where a repulsive coupling between co-propagating edge modes is expected to give rise to charge fractionalization. Using the method of non-equilibrium bosonization, we find that even asymptotically the edge distribution function depends in a sensitive way on the interaction strength between the edge modes. We compute shot noise and Fano factor from the asymptotic distribution function, and from comparison with a reference model of fractionalized excitations we find that the Fano factor can be close to the valu…
We have investigated shot noise in graphene field effect devices in the temperature range of 4.2--30 K at low frequency ($f$ = 600--850 MHz). We find that for our graphene samples with large width over length ratio $W/L$, the Fano factor $\mathfrak{F}$ reaches a maximum $\mathfrak{F} \sim$ 1/3 at the Dirac point and that it decreases strongly with increasing charge density. For smaller $W/L$, the Fano factor at Dirac point is significantly lower. Our results are in good agreement with the theory describing that transport at the Dirac point in clean graphene arises from evanescent electronic st…
We combine transport, magnetization, and torque magnetometry measurements to investigate the electronic structure of ZrTe5 and its evolution with temperature. At fields beyond the quantum limit, we observe a magnetization reversal from paramagnetic to diamagnetic response, which is characteristic of a Dirac semi-metal. We also observe a strong non-linearity in the magnetization that suggests the presence of additional low-lying carriers from other low-energy bands. Finally, we observe a striking sensitivity of the magnetic reversal to temperature that is not readily explained by simple band-st…
Polymorph of 8-Pmmn borophene exhibits anisotropic tilted Dirac cones. In this work, we explore the consequences of the tilted Dirac cones in magnetotransport properties of a periodically modulated borophene. We evaluate modulation induced diffusive conductivity by using linear response theory in low temperature regime. The application of weak modulation (electric/magnetic or both) gives rise to the magnetic field dependent non-zero oscillatory drift velocity which causes Weiss oscillation in the longitudinal conductivity at low magnetic field. The Weiss oscillation is studied in presence of a…
In this paper, we give a systematic theoretical study on the Landau levels (LLs) and magneto-optical conductivity Re$(σ_{αα})$ in a gapped Dirac semimetal model with mixed linear and parabolic dispersions under a magnetic field, which was recently proposed by Jiang \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf125}, 046403 (2020)] to explain the experimental magnetoinfrared spectroscopy in the three-dimensional ZrTe$_5$ crystal. We find that the strong magnetic field can drive the LLs become noninverted and thus the strong topological insulator phase in ZrTe$_5$ turns to be a trivial insulator. In the…
We study $N$ interacting massless Dirac fermions confined in a two-dimensional quantum dot. Physical realizations of this problem include a graphene monolayer and the surface state of a strong topological insulator. We consider both a magnetic confinement and an infinite mass confinement. The ground state energy is computed as a function of the effective interaction parameter $α$ from the Hartree-Fock approximation and, alternatively, by employing the Müller exchange functional. For N=2, we compare those approximations to exact diagonalization results. The Hartree-Fock energies are highly accu…
Electrical conductance measurements have limited scope in identifying Andreev edge states (AESs), which form the basis for realizing various topological excitations in quantum Hall (QH) - superconductor (SC) junctions. To unambiguously detect AESs, we measure shot noise along with electrical conductance in a graphene based QH-SC junction at integer filling nu=2. Remarkably, we find that the Fano factor of shot noise approaches half when the bias energy is less than the superconducting gap, whereas it is close to zero above the superconducting gap. This is striking, given that, at the same time…
Extended defects in graphene, such as linear edges, break the translational invariance and can also have an impact on the symmetries specific to massless Dirac-like quasiparticles in this material. The paper examines the consequences of a broken Dirac fermion parity in the framework of the effective boundary conditions varying from the Berry-Mondragon mass confinement to a zigzag edge. The parity breaking reflects the structural sublattice asymmetry of zigzag-type edges and is closely related to the previously predicted time-reversal symmetric edge states. We calculate the local and global den…
We investigate the entanglement entropy (EE) and charge fluctuations in models where the low energy physics is governed by massless Dirac fermions. We focus on the response to flux insertion which, for the EE, is widely assumed to be universal, \emph{i.e.}, independent of the microscopic details. We provide an analytical derivation of the EE and charge fluctuations for the seminal example of graphene, using the dimensional reduction of its tight-binding model to the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Our asymptotic expression for the EE matches the conformal field theory prediction. W…
We study quantum-mechanically the frequency-dependent current noise of a tunnel-junction coupled to a nanomechanical oscillator. The cases of both DC and AC voltage bias are considered, as are the effects of intrinsic oscillator damping. The dynamics of the oscillator can lead to large signatures in the shot noise, even if the oscillator-tunnel junction coupling is too weak to yield an appreciable signature in the average current. Moreover, the modification of the shot noise by the oscillator cannot be fully explained by a simple classical picture of a fluctuating conductance.
Many applications for topological insulators (TIs) as well as new phenomena require devices with reduced dimensions. While much progress has been made to realize thin films of TIs with low bulk carrier density, nanostructures have not yet been reported with similar properties, despite the fact that size confinement should help reduce contributions from bulk carriers. Here we demonstrate that Bi2Se3 nanoribbons, grown by a simple catalyst-free physical-vapour deposition, have inherently low bulk carrier densities, and can be further made bulk-free by size confinement, thus revealing the high mo…
A linear Josephson junction mediated by the surface states of a time-reversal-invariant Weyl or Dirac semimetal localizes Majorana flat bands protected by the time-reversal symmetry. We show that as a result, the Josephson current exhibits a discontinuous jump at $π$ phase difference which can serve as an experimental signature of the Majorana bands. The magnitude of the jump scales proportionally to the junction width and the momentum space distance between the Weyl nodes. It also exhibits a characteristic dependence on the junction orientation. We demonstrate that the jump is robust against …
We measured the shot noise in fully epitaxial Fe/MgAl2OX/Fe-based magnetic tunneling junctions (MTJs). While the Fano factor to characterize the shot noise is very close to unity in the antiparallel configuration, it is reduced to 0.98 in the parallel configuration. This observation shows the sub-Poissonian process of electron tunneling in the parallel configuration, indicating the coherent tunneling through the spinel-based tunneling barrier of the MTJ.
We calculate the shot noise generated by evanescent modes in graphene for several experimental setups. For two impurity-free graphene strips kept at the Dirac point by gate potentials, separated by a long highly doped region, we find that the Fano factor takes the universal value F = 1/4. For a large superlattice consisting of many strips gated to the Dirac point interspersed among doped regions, we find F = 1/(8 ln 2). These results differ from the value F = 1/3 predicted for a disordered metal, providing an unambiguous experimental signature of evanescent mode transport in graphene.
Lifshitz transition is a kind of topological phase transition in which the Fermi surface is reconstructed. It can occur in the two-dimensional (2D) tilted Dirac materials when the energy bands change between the type-I phase ($0<t<1$) and the type-II phase ($t>1$) through the type-III phase ($t=1$), where different tilts are parametrized by the values of $t$. In order to characterize the Lifshitz transition therein, we theoretically investigate the longitudinal optical conductivities (LOCs) in type-I, type-II, and type-III Dirac materials within linear response theory. In the undoped case, the…
The current response to an electromagnetic field in a Weyl or Dirac semimetal becomes nonlocal due to the chiral anomaly activated by an applied static magnetic field. The nonlocality develops under the conditions of the normal skin effect and is related to the valley charge imbalance generated by the joint effect of the electric field of the impinging wave and the static magnetic field. We elucidate the signatures of this nonlocality in the transmission of electromagnetic waves. The signatures include enhancement of the transmission amplitude and its specific dependence on the wave's frequenc…
We theoretically investigate the features of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two magnetic impurities, mediated by the interfacial bound states inside a domain wall (DW). The latter separates the two regions with oppositely signed inversion symmetry broken terms in graphene and Weyl semimetal. The DW is modelled by a smooth quantum well which hosts a number of discrete bound states including a pair of gapless, metallic zero-energy modes with opposite chiralities. We find clear signatures of these interfacial chiral bound states in spin response (RKKY exchange i…

Using polarized optical and magneto-optical spectroscopy, we have demonstrated universal aspects of electrodynamics associated with Dirac nodal-lines. We investigated anisotropic electrodynamics of NbAs$_2$ where the spin-orbit interaction triggers energy gaps along the nodal-lines, which manifest as sharp steps in the optical conductivity spectra. We show experimentally and theoretically that shifted 2D Dirac nodal-lines feature linear scaling $σ_1 (ω)\simω$, similar to 3D nodal-points. Massive Dirac nature of the nodal-lines are confirmed by magneto-optical data, which may also be indicative…

We have investigated electrical transport and shot noise in graphene field effect devices. In large width over length ratio $W/L$ graphene strips, we have measured shot noise at low frequency ($f$ = 600--850 MHz) in the temperature range of 4.2--30 K. We observe a minimum conductivity of $\frac{4e^{2}}{πh}$ and a finite and gate dependent Fano factor reaching the universal value of 1/3 at the Dirac point, i.e. where the density of states vanishes. These findings are in good agreement with the theory describing that transport at the Dirac point should occur via evanescent waves in perfect graph…
The field of topological materials science has recently been focussing on three-dimensional Dirac semimetals, which exhibit robust Dirac phases in the bulk. However, the absence of characteristic surface states in accidental Dirac semimetals (DSM) makes it difficult to experimentally verify claims about the topological nature using commonly used surface-sensitive techniques. The chiral magnetic effect (CME), which originates from the Weyl nodes, causes an $\textbf{E}\cdot\textbf{B}$-dependent chiral charge polarization, which manifests itself as negative magnetoresistance. We exploit the exten…
The inherent asymmetry of the electric transport in graphene is attributed to Klein tunneling across barriers defined by $\textit{pn}$-interfaces between positively and negatively charged regions. By combining conductance and shot noise experiments we determine the main characteristics of the tunneling barrier (height and slope) in a high-quality suspended sample with Au/Cr/Au contacts. We observe an asymmetric resistance $R_{\textrm{odd}}=100-70$ $Ω$ across the Dirac point of the suspended graphene at carrier density $|n_{\rm G}|=0.3-4 \cdot 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, while the Fano factor displays …
We theoretically investigate the emergence of non-hermitian physics at the heterojunction of a type-II Dirac semi-metal (DSM) and a dirty superconductor (DSC). The non-hermiticity is introduced in the DSM through the self-energy term incorporated via the dirtiness of the superconducting material. This causes the spectra of the effective Hamiltonian to become complex, which gives rise to the appearance of the exceptional points (EPs). This complex self energy, apart from having a frequency dependence, also acquires spatial dependence as well, which is unique and can provide interesting effects …
Transport properties of graphene - superconductor junction has been studied extensively to understand the interplay of the relativistic Dirac quasiparticles and superconductivity. Though shot noise measurements in graphene has been performed to realize many theoretical predictions, both at zero magnetic field as well as quantum Hall (QH) regime, its junction with superconductor remain unexplored. Here, we have carried out the shot noise measurements in an edge contacted bilayer graphene - Niobium superconductor junction at zero magnetic field as well as QH regime. At the Dirac point we have ob…

We study non-equilibrium noise in the tunnelling current between the edges of a quantum Hall liquid in the Pfaffian state, which is a strong candidate for the plateau at $ν=5/2$. To first non-vanishing order in perturbation theory (in the tunneling amplitude) we find that one can extract the value of the fractional charge of the tunnelling quasiparticles. We note however that no direct information about non-abelian statistics can be retrieved at this level. If we go to higher-order in the perturbative calculation of the non-equilibrium shot noise, we find effects due to non-Abelian statistics.…
The half filled Landau level is expected to be approximately particle-hole symmetric, which requires an extension of the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory of the compressible state observed at this filling. Recent work indicates that, when particle-hole symmetry is preserved, the composite Fermions experience a quantized $π$-Berry phase upon winding around the composite Fermi-surface, analogous to Dirac fermions at the surface of a 3D topological insulator. In contrast, the effective low energy theory of the composite fermion liquid originally proposed by HLR lacks particle-hole symmetry and has …
We investigate the shot noise of an impurity-free graphene flake as a function of the chemical potential. For large width to length ratios, this noise has been predicted and observed to exhibit universal characteristics at the Dirac point. Furthermore, a sharp decrease of the shot noise with increasing carrier density has been predicted. This decrease has also been observed in experiments, but with much smaller slope than predicted. We reconcile this discrepancy between theory and experiment by including the effects of the contacts to the graphene ribbon.
The interband optical response of a three-dimensional Dirac cone is linear in photon energy ($Ω$). Here, we study the evolution of the interband response within a model Hamiltonian which contains Dirac, Weyl and gapped semimetal phases. In the pure Dirac case, a single linear dependence is observed, while in the Weyl phase, we find two quasilinear regions with different slopes. These regions are also distinct from the large-$Ω$ dependence. As the boundary between the Weyl (WSM) and gapped phases is approached, the slope of the low-$Ω$ response increases, while the photon-energy range over whic…
In Dirac materials, the low energy excitations behave like ultra-relativistic massless particles with linear energy dispersion. A particularly intriguing phenomenon arises with the intrinsic charge transport behavior at the Dirac point where the charge density approaches zero. In graphene, a 2-D Dirac fermion system, it was predicted that charge transport near the Dirac point is carried by evanescent modes, resulting in unconventional pseudo-diffusive charge transport even in the absence of disorder. In the past decade, experimental observation of this phenomenon remained challenging due to th…
We develop a theory for optical Faraday rotation noise in two-dimensional Dirac materials. In contrast to spin noise in conventional semiconductors, we find that the Faraday rotation fluctuations are influenced not only by spins but also the valley degrees of freedom attributed to intervalley scattering processes. We illustrate our theory with two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides and discuss signatures of spin and valley noise in the Faraday noise power spectrum. We propose optical Faraday noise spectroscopy as a technique for probing both spin and valley relaxation dynamics in two…
We predict nonlinear optical polarization rotation in two dimensional massless Dirac systems including graphene and 8-$Pmmn$ borophene. When illuminated, a continuous wave optical field leads to a nonlinear steady state of photo-excited carriers in the medium. The photo-excited population inversion and the inter-band coherence gives rise to a finite transverse optical conductivity, $σ_{xy} (ω)$. This in turn leads to definitive signatures in associated Kerr and Faraday polarization rotation, which are measurable in a realistic experimental scenario.
One of the unique features of Dirac Fermions is pseudo-diffusive transport by evanescent modes at low Fermi energies when the disorder is low. At higher Fermi energies i.e. carrier densities, the electrical transport is diffusive in nature and the propagation occurs via plane-waves. In this study, we report the detection of such evanescent modes in the surface states of topological insulator through 1/f noise. While signatures of pseudo-diffusive transport have been seen experimentally in graphene, such behavior is yet to be observed explicitly in any other system with a Dirac dispersion. To p…
The electronic properties of graphene have been intensively investigated over the last decade, and signatures of the remarkable features of its linear Dirac spectrum have been displayed using transport and spectroscopy experiments. In contrast, the orbital magnetism of graphene, which is one of the most fundamental signature of the characteristic Berry phase of graphene's electronic wave functions, has not yet been measured in a single flake. In particular, the striking prediction of a divergent diamagnetic response at zero doping calls for an experimental test. Using a highly sensitive Giant …
We have studied electronic conductivity and shot noise of bilayer graphene (BLG) sheets at high bias voltages and low bath temperature $T_0=4.2$ K. As a function of bias, we find initially an increase of the differential conductivity, which we attribute to self-heating. At higher bias, the conductivity saturates and even decreases due to backscattering from optical phonons. The electron-phonon interactions are also responsible for the decay of the Fano factor at bias voltages $V>0.1$ V. The high bias electronic temperature has been calculated from shot noise measurements, and it goes up to $\s…
We report shot noise spectroscopy on a semiconductor quantum dot in a cotunneling regime. The DC conductance measurements show clear signatures of both elastic and inelastic cotunneling transport inside a Coulomb diamond. We observed Poissonian shot noise with the Fano factor $F\approx 1$ in the elastic cotunneling regime, and super-Poissonian Fano factor $1<F<3$ in the inelastic cotunneling regime. The differences in the value of the Fano factor between elastic and inelastic processes reveal the microscopic mechanisms involved in the cotunneling transport.
Graphene flakes placed on hexagonal boron nitride feature in the presence of a magnetic field a complex electronic structure due to a hexagonal moiré potential resulting from the van der Waals interaction with the substrate. The slight lattice mismatch gives rise to a periodic supercell potential. Zone folding is expected to create replica of the original Dirac cone and Hofstadter butterflies. Our large-scale tight binding simulation reveals an unexpected coexistence of a relativistic and non-relativistic Landau level structure. The presence of the zeroth Landau level and its associated butter…
We investigate the injection of degenerate Fermi-Dirac electrons into a multimode ballistic conductor under the space-charge limited regime. The nonequilibrium current fluctuations were found to be suppressed by both Coulomb and Fermi correlations. We show that the Fermi shot-noise suppression factor is limited below by the value 2kT/epsilon_F, where T is the temperature and epsilon_F the Fermi energy of the injected electrons. The Coulomb noise suppression factor may attain much lower values epsilon_F/2qU, because of its dependence on the applied bias U >> kT/q. The asymptotic behaviour of th…
A three-dimensional topological insulator features a two-dimensional surface state consisting of a single linearly-dispersive Dirac cone. Under broken time-reversal symmetry, the single Dirac cone is predicted to cause half-integer quantization of Hall conductance, which is a manifestation of the parity anomaly in quantum field theory. However, despite various observations of quantization phenomena, the half-integer quantization has been elusive because a pair of equivalent Dirac cones on two opposing surfaces are simultaneously measured in ordinary experiments. Here we demonstrate the half-in…
When subjected to electromagnetic radiation, the fluctuation of the electronic current across a quantum conductor increases. This additional noise, called photon-assisted shot noise, arises from the generation and subsequent partition of electron-hole pairs in the conductor. The physics of photon-assisted shot noise has been thoroughly investigated at microwave frequencies up to 20 GHz, and its robustness suggests that it could be extended to the Terahertz (THz) range. Here, we present measurements of the quantum shot noise generated in a graphene nanoribbon subjected to a THz radiation. Our r…
The statistics of tunneling current in a fractional quantum Hall sample with an antidot is studied in the chiral Luttinger liquid picture of edge states. A comparison between Fano factor and skewness is proposed in order to clearly distinguish the charge of the carriers in both the thermal and the shot limit. In addition, we address effects on current moments of non-universal exponents in single-quasiparticle propagators. Positive correlations, result of propagators behaviour, are obtained in the shot noise limit of the Fano factor, and possible experimental consequences are outlined.

We study the dynamical behavior of a non-Hermitian moire superlattice system, which consists of two-coupled SSH chains with staggered imaginary on-site potentials. There are two main spatial regions, in which systems are in unbroken symmetric phases with fully real spectrum, appearing periodically along the ladder. We show that the two quantum phases are dimerized and tetramerized, which determine the distinct dynamical behaviors. Dirac probability can oscillate periodically, increase quadratically and increase exponentially, which correspond to the unbroken phase, exceptional point and the br…
