In this paper we study the regular semigroups weakly generated by a single element x, that is, with no proper regular subsemigroup containing x. We show there exists a regular semigroup $F_1$ weakly generated by x such that all other regular semigroups weakly generated by x are homomorphic images of $F_1$. We define $F_1$ using a presentation where both sets of generators and relations are infinite. Nevertheless, the word problem for this presentation is decidable. We describe a canonical form for the congruence classes given by this presentation, and explain how to obtain it. We end the paper studying the structure of $F_1$. In particular, we show that the `free regular semigroup $FI_2$ weakly generated by two idempotents "is isomorphic to a regular subsemigroup of $F_1$ weakly generated by {xx',x'x}.
A weakly U abundant is a class of semigroups characterized using some generalized Green' relations. In this paper we discuss the variants of weakly U - abundant semigroups and it is shown that the idempotent variants of these semigroups are again weakly U abundant. Further we also discuss the natural partial order on variants of a weakly U abundant semigroup.
A semigroup $S$ is called a weakly exponential semigroup if, for every couple $(a,b)\in S\times S$ and every positive integer $n$, there is a non-negative integer $m$ such that $(ab)^{n+m}=a^nb^n(ab)^m=(ab)^ma^nb^n$. A semigroup $S$ is called a $Δ$-semigroup if the lattice of all congruences of $S$ is a chain with respect to inclusion. The weakly exponential $Δ$-semigroups were described in [5]: A. Nagy, Weakly exponential $Δ$-semigroups, Semigroup Forum, 40(1990), 297-313. Although the existence of two types of them (T2R and T2L semigroups) is an open question, Theorem 3.11 of [5] gives neces…
A regular semigroup is weakly generated by a set X if it has no proper regular subsemigroups containing X. In this paper, we study the regular semigroups weakly generated by idempotents. We show there exists a regular semigroup FI(X) weakly generated by |X| idempotents such that all other regular semigroups weakly generated by |X| idempotents are homomorphic images of FI(X). The semigroup FI(X) is defined by a presentation $\langle G(X),ρ_e\cupρ_s\rangle$ and its structure is studied. Although each of the sets $G(X)$, $ρ_e$, and $ρ_s$ is infinite for $|X|\geq 2$, we show that the word problem …
We study varieties of semigroups related to completely 0-simple semigroup. We present here an algorithmic descriptions of these varieties interms of "forbidden" semigroups.
In this paper, we have introduced the notion of (1,2)-ideal in an LA-semigroup and shown that (1,2)-ideal and two-sided ideal coincide in an intra-regular LA-semigroup. We have characterized an intra-regular LA-semigroup by using the properties of left and right ideals. Some natural examples of LA-semigroups have been given. Further we have investigated some useful conditions for an LA-semigroup to become an intra-regular LA-semigroup and given the counter examples to illustrate the converse inclusions. All the ideals (left, right, two-sided, interior, quasi, bi- generalized bi- and (1,2)) of …
Following G.Szasz [2] a subsemigroup I of semigroup S is called an interior ideal if SIS \subset I. In this paper we explore the classes of regular semigroup and its different subclasses by their interior ideals. Furthermore, we introduce the strongly prime, prime, semiprime, strongly irreducible, and irreducible interior ideals of semigroups and also characterize those semigroups for which each interior ideal is strongly prime. Some important interplay between the classes of all interior ideals and other ideals are given here. In addition to this, we present different characterizations of sem…
This survey aims to give an overview of several substantial developments of the last 50 years in the structure theory of regular semigroups and to shed light on their impact on other parts of semigroup theory.
In this paper we characterize left(right) ideals, bi-ideals and quasi-ideals of an ordered semigroup by an index $m$ and give some important interplays between these ideals. The concept of m-regularity of an ordered semigroups has been introduced. Moreover m-regular ordered semigroups are characterized by their m-quasi-ideals and the fact that for any m-regular ordered semigroups $A$, the set $Q_{A}$ of all m-quasi-ideals of $A$, with multiplication defined by: $Q_{1}\circ Q_{2}=(Q_{1}Q_{2}]$, for all $Q_{1},Q_{2}\in Q_{A}$, is a m-regular semigroup is obtained here.
Let ${\cal M}(S; Λ; P)$ denote a Rees $I\times Λ$ matrix semigroup without zero over a semigroup $S$, where $I$ is a singleton. If $θ_S$ denotes the kernel of the right regular representation of a semigroup $S$, then a triple $A, B, C$ of semigroups is said to be right regular, if there are mappings $A\stackrel{P}{\longleftarrow}B$ and $B\stackrel{P'}{\longrightarrow}C$ such that ${\cal M}(A; B; P)/θ_{{\cal M}(A; B; P)}\cong {\cal M}(C; B; P')$. In this paper we examine right regular triples of semigroups.
There are two major structure theorems for an arbitrary regular semigroup using categories, both due to Nambooripad. The first construction using inductive groupoids departs from the biordered set structure of a given regular semigroup. This approach belongs to the realm of the celebrated Ehresmann--Schein--Nambooripad Theorem and its subsequent generalisations. The second construction is a generalisation of Grillet's work on cross-connected partially ordered sets, arising from the principal ideals of the given semigroup. In this article, we establish a direct equivalence between these two see…
We consider an application to the discrete log problem using completely regular semigroups which may provide a more secure symmetric cryptosystem than the classic system based on groups. In particular we describe a scheme that would appear to offer protection to a standard trial multiplication attack.
This paper enriches the list of properties of the congruence sequences starting from the universal relation and successively performing the operations of lower $t$ and lower $k$. Three classes of completely regular semigroups, namely semigroups for which $\kerσ$ is a cryptogroup, semigroups for which $\kerν$ is a cryptogroup and semigroups for which $κ$ is over rectangular bands, are studied. $((ω_t)_k)_t$, $((\mathcal{D}_t)_k)_t$ and $((ω_k)_t)_k$ are found to be the least congruences on $S$ such that the quotient semigroups are semigroups for which $\kerσ$ is a cryptogroup, $\kerν$ is a cryp…
This paper is a contribution to the theory of finite semigroups and their classification in pseudovarieties, which is motivated by its connections with computer science. The question addressed is what role can play the consideration of an order compatible with the semigroup operation. In the case of unions of groups, so-called completely regular semigroups, the problem of which new pseudovarieties appear in the ordered context is solved. As applications, it is shown that the lattice of pseudovarieties of ordered completely regular semigroups is modular and that taking the intersection with the…
We prove the following results: (1) Every group is a maximal subgroup of some free idempotent generated semigroup. (2) Every finitely presented group is a maximal subgroup of some free idempotent generated semigroup arising from a finite semigroup. (3) Every group is a maximal subgroup of some free regular idempotent generated semigroup. (4) Every finite group is a maximal subgroup of some free regular idempotent generated semigroup arising from a finite regular semigroup.
It is proved that, given a (von Neumann) regular semigroup with finitely many left and right ideals, if every maximal subgroup is presentable by a finite complete rewriting system, then so is the semigroup. To achieve this, the following two results are proved: the property of being defined by a finite complete rewriting system is preserved when taking an ideal extension by a semigroup defined by a finite complete rewriting system; a completely 0-simple semigroup with finitely many left and right ideals admits a presentation by a finite complete rewriting system provided all of its maximal sub…
Let $a$ be a non-invertible transformation of a finite set and let $G$ be a group of permutations on that same set. Then $\genset{G, a}\setminus G$ is a subsemigroup, consisting of all non-invertible transformations, in the semigroup generated by $G$ and $a$. Likewise, the conjugates $a^g=g^{-1}ag$ of $a$ by elements $g\in G$ generate a semigroup denoted $\genset{a^g | g\in G}$. We classify the finite permutation groups $G$ on a finite set $X$ such that the semigroups $\genset{G,a}$, $\genset{G, a}\setminus G$, and $\genset{a^g | g\in G}$ are regular for all transformations of $X$. We also cla…
Let $T(X)$ (resp. L(V)) be the semigroup of all transformations (resp. linear transformations) of a set $X$ (resp. vector space $V$). For a subset $Y$ of $X$ and a subsemigroup $\mathbb{S}(Y)$ of $T(Y)$, consider the subsemigroup $T_{\mathbb{S}(Y)}(X) = \{f\in T(X)\colon f_{\upharpoonright_Y} \in \mathbb{S}(Y)\}$ of $T(X)$, where $f_{\upharpoonright_Y}\in T(Y)$ agrees with $f$ on $Y$. We give a new characterization for $T_{\mathbb{S}(Y)}(X)$ to be a regular semigroup [inverse semigroup]. For a subspace $W$ of $V$ and a subsemigroup $\mathbb{S}(W)$ of $L(W)$, we define an analogous subsemigroup…
Let $T(X)$ be the full transformation semigroup on a set $X$, and let $L(V)$ be the semigroup under composition of all linear transformations on a vector space $V$ over a field. For a subset $Y$ of $X$ and a subspace $W$ of $V$, consider the semigroups $\overline{T}(X, Y) = \{f\in T(X)\colon Yf \subseteq Y\}$ and $\overline{L}(V, W) = \{f\in L(V)\colon Wf \subseteq W\}$ under composition. We describe unit-regular elements in $\overline{T}(X, Y)$ and $\overline{L}(V, W)$. Using these, we determine when $\overline{T}(X, Y)$ and $\overline{L}(V, W)$ are unit-regular. We prove that $f\in L(V)$ is …
In this paper we focus on Rees $I\times Λ$ matrix semigroups without zero over a semigroup $S$ with $Λ\times I$ sandwich matrix $P$, where $I$ is a singleton, $Λ$ is the factor semigroup of $S$ modulo the kernel $θ_S$ of the right regular representation of $S$, and $P$ is a choice function on the collection of all $θ_S$-classes of $S$. We describe the kernel of the right regular representation of this type of Rees matrix semigroups, and prove embedding theorems on them. Motivated by one of embedding theorems, we show how right commutative right cancellative semigroups can be constructed. We de…
Let $X$ be a set and $\mathcal{T}_X$ be the full transformation semigroup on $X$. For a partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $X$, we consider semigroups $T(X, \mathcal{P}) = \{f\in \mathcal{T}_X| (\forall X_i\in \mathcal{P}) (\exists X_j \in \mathcal{P})\;X_i f \subseteq X_j\}$, $Σ(X, \mathcal{P}) = \{f\in T(X, \mathcal{P})|(\forall X_i \in \mathcal{P})\; Xf \cap X_i \neq \emptyset\}$, and $Γ(X, \mathcal{P}) = \{f\in \mathcal{T}_X|(\forall X_i\in \mathcal{P})(\exists X_j\in \mathcal{P})\; X_i f = X_j\}$. We characterize unit-regular elements of both $T(X, \mathcal{P})$ and $Σ(X, \mathcal{P})$ for finite…
Let $X$ be a nonempty set and $\mathcal{P}=\{X_i\colon i\in I\}$ be a partition of $X$. Denote by $T(X, \mathcal{P})$ the semigroup of all transformations of $X$ that preserve $\mathcal{P}$. In this paper, we study the semigroup $\mathcal{B}(X,\mathcal{P})$ of all transformations $f\in T(X, \mathcal{P})$ such that $χ^{(f)}\in {\rm Sym}(I)$, where ${\rm Sym}(I)$ is the symmetric group on $I$ and $χ^{(f)}\colon I \to I$ is the character (map) of $f$ defined by $iχ^{(f)}=j$ whenever $X_if\subseteq X_j$. We describe unit-regular elements in $\mathcal{B}(X,\mathcal{P})$, and determine when $\mathca…
A regular ordered semigroup $S$ is called right inverse if every principal left ideal of $S$ is generated by an $\mathcal{R}$-unique ordered idempotent. Here we explore the theory of right inverse ordered semigroups. We show that a regular ordered semigroup is right inverse if and only if any two right inverses of an element $a\in S$ are $\mathcal{R}$-related. Furthermore, different characterizations of right Clifford, right group-like, group like ordered semigroups are done by right inverse ordered semigroups. Thus a foundation of right inverse semigroups has been developed.
Let $S$ be a semigroup. The elements $a,b\in S$ are called primarily conjugate if $a=xy$ and $b=yx$ for certain $x,y\in S$. The relation of conjugacy is defined as the transitive closure of the relation of primary conjugacy. In the case when $S$ is a monoid, denote by $G$ the group of units of $S$. Then the relation of $G$-conjugacy is defined by $a\sim_G b \iff a=g^{-1}bg$ for certain $g\in G$. We establish the structure of conjugacy classes for regular epigroups (i.e. semigroups such that some power of each element lies in a subgroup). As a corollary we obtain a criterion of conjugacy in ter…
A semigroup $S$ is called an equational domain if any finite union of algebraic sets over $S$ is algebraic. We prove if a completely regular semigroup $S$ is an equational domain then $S$ is completely simple.
Motivated by the question of which completely regular semigroups have context-free word problem, we show that for certain classes of languages $\mathfrak{C}$(including context-free), every completely regular semigroup that is a union of finitely many finitely generated groups with word problem in $\mathfrak{C}$ also has word problem in $\mathfrak{C}$. We give an example to show that not all completely regular semigroups with context-free word problem can be so constructed.
In this paper we present a new embedding of a semigroup into a semiband (idempotent-generated semigroup) of depth 4 (every element is the product of 4 idempotents) using a semidirect product construction. Our embedding does not assume that S is a monoid (although it assumes a weaker condition), and works also for (non-monoid) regular semigroups. In fact, this semidirect product is particularly useful for regular semigroups since we can defined another embedding for these semigroups into a smaller semiband of depth 2. We shall then compare our construction with other known embeddings, and we sh…
We exhibit a simple condition under which a finite involutary semigroup whose semigroup reduct is inherently nonfinitely based is also inherently nonfinitely based as a unary semigroup. As applications, we get already known as well as new examples of inherently nonfinitely based involutory semigroups. We also show that for finite regular semigroups, our condition is not only sufficient but also necessary for the property of being inherently nonfinitely based to persist. This leads to an algorithmic description of regular inherently nonfinitely based involutory semigroups.
In 1978, Munn proved that a bounded complex representation of an inverse semigroup is semiunitary and completely reducible. We consider the converse question in the finite case. We provide some sufficient conditions from a finite regular semigroup to a finite inverse semigroup.
The category of all idempotent generated semigroups with a prescribed structure $\mathcal{E}$ of their idempotents $E$ (called the biordered set) has an initial object called the free idempotent generated semigroup over $\mathcal{E}$, defined by a presentation over alphabet $E$, and denoted by $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$. Recently, much effort has been put into investigating the structure of semigroups of the form $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$, especially regarding their maximal subgroups. In this paper we take these investigations in a new direction by considering the word problem for $\mathsf{IG…
Let $S$ be an algebraic semigroup (not necessarily linear) defined over a field $F$. We show that there exists a positive integer $n$ such that $x^n$ belongs to a subgroup of $S(F)$ for any $x \in S(F)$. In particular, the semigroup $S(F)$ is strongly π-regular.
Two semigroups are lattice isomorphic if the lattices of their subsemigroups are isomorphic, and a class of semigroups is lattice closed if it contains every semigroup which is lattice isomorphic to some semigroup from that class. An orthodox semigroup is a regular semigroup whose idempotents form a subsemigroup. We prove that the class of all orthodox semigroups in which every nonidempotent element has infinite order is lattice closed.
The set of idempotents of any semigroup carries the structure of a biordered set, which contains a great deal of information concerning the idempotent generated subsemigroup of the semigroup in question. This leads to the construction of a free idempotent generated semigroup $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$ - the `free-est' semigroup with a given biordered set $\mathcal{E}$ of idempotents. We show that when $\mathcal{E}$ is finite, the word problem for $\mathsf{IG}(\mathcal{E})$ is equivalent to a family of constraint satisfaction problems involving rational subsets of direct products of pairs of ma…
For each group G which decomposes into a finitary direct product of free groups of finite rank we construct a regular band B such that the free idempotent generated semigroup over B contains a maximal subgroup isomorphic to G. In particular, there exists a (regular) band B_0 with the property that any idempotent generated semigroup whose biordered set is isomorphic to that of B_0 must have all its subgroups abelian.
Let $X$ be a nonempty set and let $T(X)$ be the full transformation semigroup on $X$. The main objective of this paper is to study the subsemigroup $\overlineΩ(X, Y)$ of $T(X)$ defined by \[\overlineΩ(X, Y) = \{f\in T(X)\colon Yf = Y\},\] where $Y$ is a fixed nonempty subset of $X$. We describe regular elements in $\overlineΩ(X, Y)$ and show that $\overlineΩ(X, Y)$ is regular if and only if $Y$ is finite. We characterize unit-regular elements in $\overlineΩ(X, Y)$ and prove that $\overlineΩ(X, Y)$ is unit-regular if and only if $X$ is finite. We characterize Green's relations on $\overlineΩ(X,…
Given a regular language L, we effectively construct a unary semigroup that recognizes the topological closure of L in the free unary semigroup relative to the variety of unary semigroups generated by the pseudovariety R of all finite R-trivial semigroups. In particular, we obtain a new effective solution of the separation problem of regular languages by R-languages.
The paper begins by exploring the various definitions of norms on semigroups and then presents a new definition of a normed semigroup. The properties of normed semigroups in the new sense are investigated. The new definition of the norm is used to establish a general result on topological regular semigroups which is then used to prove the surprising result that the semigroup M_n(K) is not a topological regular semigroup.
We are interested in properties, especially injectivity (in the sense of category theory), of the ternary rings of operators generated by certain subsets of an inverse semigroup via the regular representation. We determine all subsets of the extended bicyclic semigroup which are closed under the triple product $xy^*z$ (called semiheaps) and show that the weakly closed ternary rings of operators generated by them (W*-TROs) are injective operator spaces.
We study the semigroup extension $\mathscr{I}_λ^n(S)$ of a semigroup $S$ by symmetric inverse semigroups of a bounded finite rank. We describe idempotents and regular elements of the semigroups $\mathscr{I}_λ^n(S)$ and $\overline{\mathscr{I}_λ^n}(S)$ show that the semigroup $\mathscr{I}_λ^n(S)$ ($\overline{\mathscr{I}_λ^n}(S)$) is regular, orthodox, inverse or stable if and only if so is $S$. Green's relations are described on the semigroup $\mathscr{I}_λ^n(S)$ for an arbitrary monoid $S$. We introduce the conception of a semigroup with strongly tight ideal series, and proved that for any infi…
We study the complexity classes P and NP through a semigroup fP ("polynomial-time functions"), consisting of all polynomially balanced polynomial-time computable partial functions. Then P is not equal to NP iff fP is a non-regular semigroup. The one-way functions considered here are based on worst-case complexity (they are not cryptographic); they are the non-regular elements of fP. We prove various properties of fP, e.g., that it is finitely generated. We define reductions with respect to which certain universal one-way functions are fP-complete.
In this note we first consider a ternary matrix group related to the von Neumann regular semigroups and to the Artin braid group (in an algebraic way). The product of a special kind of ternary matrices (idempotent and of finite order) reproduces the regular semigroups and braid groups with their binary multiplication of components. We then generalize the construction to the higher arity case, which allows us to obtain some higher degree versions (in our sense) of the regular semigroups and braid groups. The latter are connected with the generalized polyadic braid equation and $R$-matrix introd…
The idempotent problem of a finitely generated inverse semigroup is the formal language of all words over the generators representing idempotent elements. This note proves that a finitely generated inverse semigroup with regular idempotent problem is necessarily finite. This answers a question of Gilbert and Noonan Heale, and establishes a generalisation to inverse semigroups of Anisimov's Theorem for groups.
