Let $A$ be a Noetherian domain and $R$ be a finitely generated $A$-algebra. We study several features regarding the generic freeness over $A$ of an $R$-module. For an ideal $I \subset R$, we show that the local cohomology modules ${\rm H}_I^i(R)$ are generically free over $A$ under certain settings where $R$ is a smooth $A$-algebra. By utilizing the theory of Gröbner bases over arbitrary Noetherian rings, we provide an effective method to make explicit the generic freeness over $A$ of a finitely generated $R$-module.
The main focus is the generic freeness of local cohomology modules in a graded setting. The present approach takes place in a quite nonrestrictive setting, by solely assuming that the ground coefficient ring is Noetherian. Under additional assumptions, such as when the latter is reduced or a domain, the outcome turns out to be stronger. One important application of these considerations is to the specialization of rational maps and of symmetric and Rees powers of a module.
Let $R$ be a finitely generated positively graded algebra over a Noetherian local ring $B$, and $\mathfrak{m} = [R]_+$ be the graded irrelevant ideal of $R$. We provide a local criterion characterizing the $B$-freeness of all the local cohomology modules $\text{H}_\mathfrak{m}^i(M)$ of a finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$. We show that fiber-full modules are exactly the ones that satisfy this criterion. When we change $B$ by an arbitrary Noetherian ring $A$, we study the fiber-full locus of a module in $\text{Spec}(A)$: we show that the fiber-full locus is always an open subset of $\text…
This note gives the complete projective classification of rational, cuspidal plane curves of degree at least 6, and having only weighted homogeneous singularities. It also sheds new light on some previous characterizations of free and nearly free curves in terms of Tjurina numbers. Finally, we suggest a stronger form of Terao's conjecture on the freeness of a line arrangement being determined by its combinatorics.
We prove Freudenburg's Freeness Conjecture: Let B be the polynomial ring in three variables over a field of characteristic zero, let D : B --> B be a nonzero locally nilpotent derivation, and let A = ker(D). Then B is a free A-module, and there exists a basis $(e_i)_{i \in \mathbb{N}}$ of B such that deg$_D(e_i) = i$ for all $i \in \mathbb{N}$.
Let $A\to B$ be a morphism of Artin local rings with the same embedding dimension. We prove that any $A$-flat $B$-module is $B$-flat. This freeness criterion was conjectured by de Smit in 1997 and improves Diamond's Theorem 2.1 from his 1997 paper "The Taylor-Wiles construction and multiplicity one". We also prove that if there is a nonzero $A$-flat $B$-module, then $A\to B$ is flat and is a relative complete intersection (i.e. $B/\mathfrak{m}_AB$ is a complete intersection). Then we explain how this result allows to simplify Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem: we do not need the so-called…
Let $F^n(-)$ be the Frobenius functor of Peskine and Szpiro. In this note, we show that the maximal Cohen-Macaulayness of $F^n(M)$ forces $M$ to be free, provided $M$ has a rank. We apply this result to obtain several Frobenius related criteria for the Gorensteinness of a local ring $R$, one of which improves a previous characterization due to Hanes and Huneke. We also establish a special class of finite length modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings, which are rigid against Frobenius.
We establish new results on (co)homology vanishing and Ext-Tor dualities, and derive a number of freeness criteria for finite modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings. In the main application, we settle the long-standing Auslander-Reiten conjecture for the class of Cohen-Macaulay Burch rings, among other results toward this and related problems, e.g., the Tachikawa and Huneke-Wiegand conjectures. We also derive results on further topics of interest such as Cohen-Macaulayness of tensor products and Tor-independence, and inspired by a paper of Huneke and Leuschke we obtain characterizations of wh…
Let $M$ be a module over a Noetherian local ring $A$. We study $M$-independent sequences of elements of $\mathfrak{m}_A$ in the sense of Lech and Hanes. The main tool is a new characterization of the $M$-independence of a sequence in terms of the associated Koszul complex. As applications, we give a result in linkage theory, a freeness criterion for $M$ in terms of the existence of a strongly $M$-independent sequence of length $edim(A)$, and another freeness criterion inspired from the patching method of Calegari and Geraghty for balanced modules in their 2018 paper.
In this paper, motivated by a work of Luk and Yau, and Huneke and Wiegand, we study various aspects of the cohomological rigidity property of tensor product of modules over commutative Noetherian rings. We determine conditions under which the vanishing of a single local cohomology module of a tensor product implies the vanishing of all the lower ones, and obtain new connections between the local cohomology modules of tensor products and the Tate homology. Our argument yields bounds for the depth of tensor products of modules, as well as criteria for freeness of modules over complete intersecti…
Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a Noetherian local ring $(R,\fm)$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. In this paper we introduce some criterions on Artinianness of formal local cohomology, in particular vanishing and finiteness of local cohomology modules. We find out the lower and upper bound for Artinianness of formal local cohomology
We introduce an idea for generalization of a local cohomology module, which we call a local cohomology module with respect to a pair of ideals (I,J), and study their various properties. Some vanishing and nonvanishing theorems are given for this generalized version of local cohomology. We also discuss its connection with the ordinary local cohomology.
We prove a duality theorem for graded algebras over a field that implies several known duality results : graded local duality, versions of Serre duality for local cohomology and of Suzuki duality for generalized local cohomology, and Herzog-Rahimi bigraded duality.
F. Diamond proved a numerical criterion for modules over local rings to be free modules over complete intersection rings. We formulate a refinement of these results using the notion of Wiles defect. A key step in the proof is a formula that expresses the Wiles defect of a module in terms of the Wiles defect of the underlying ring.
Let $A$ be a noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $A$, and $M$ an $A$--module. Some uniform theorems on the artinianness of certain local cohomology modules are proven in a general situation. They generalize and imply previous results about the artinianness of some special local cohomology modules in the graded case.
Let $R$ be a noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$ such that $\dim R/\fa=1$ and $M$ a finite $R$--module. We will study cofiniteness and some other properties of the local cohomology modules $\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M)$. For an arbitrary ideal $\fa$ and an $R$--module $M$ (not necessarily finite), we will characterize $\fa$--cofinite artinian local cohomology modules. Certain sets of coassociated primes of top local cohomology modules over local rings are characterized.
Let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal of local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module and $n\in\Bbb N$. It is shown that some results concerning cominimaxness of formal local cohomology modules.
We present various approaches to J. Herzog's theory of generalized local cohomology and explore its main aspects, e.g., (non-)vanishing results as well as a general local duality theorem which extends, to a much broader class of rings, previous results by Herzog-Zamani and Suzuki. As an application, we establish a prescribed upper bound for the projective dimension of a module satisfying suitable cohomological conditions, and we derive some freeness criteria and questions of Auslander-Reiten type. Along the way, we prove a new characterization of Cohen-Macaulay modules which truly relies on ge…
Let S be a toric algebra over a field K of characteristic 0 and let I be a monomial ideal of S. We show that the local cohomology modules H^i_I(S) are of finite length over the ring of differential operators D(S;K), generalizing the classical case of a polynomial algebra S. As an application, we compute the characteristic cycles of some local cohomology modules.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring that is a smooth $\mathbb Z$-algebra. For each ideal $I$ of $R$ and integer $k$, we prove that the local cohomology module $H^k_I(R)$ has finitely many associated prime ideals. This settles a crucial outstanding case of a conjecture of Lyubeznik asserting this finiteness for local cohomology modules of all regular rings.
The study of Frobenius actions on local cohomology modules over a local ring of prime characteristic has interesting connections with the theory of tight closure. This paper establishes new connections by developing the notion of relative Frobenius actions on local cohomology. As an application, we show that a ring has $F$-nilpotent singularities if and only if the tight closure of every parameter ideal is equal to its Frobenius closure.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. We introduce a theory of formal local cohomology for complexes of R-modules. As an application, we establish some relations between formal local cohomology, local homology, local cohomology and local Tate cohomology through some natural isomorphisms. We investigate vanishing of formal local cohomology modules. Also, we give a characterization of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.
Comparing vanishing of local cohomology in zero and positive characteristic, we give an example of a D-module on a Grassmann variety in positive characteristic with non-vanishing first cohomology group. This is a counterexample to D-affinity and the Beilinson-Bernstein equivalence for flag manifolds in positive characteristic.
Some criteria for graded local cohomology to commute with coarsening functors are proven, and an example is given where graded local cohomology does not commute with coarsening.
In this paper we consider the local cohomology of monomial ideals with respect to monomial prime ideals and show that all these local cohomology modules are tame.
We introduce a notion of generalized local cohomology modules with respect to a pair of ideals $(I,J)$ which is a generalization of the concept of local cohomology modules with respect to $(I,J).$ We show that generalized local cohomology modules $H^i_{I,J}(M,N)$ can be computed by the Čech cohomology modules. We also study the artinianness of generalized local cohomology modules $H^i_{I,J}(M,N).$
Through a study of torsion functors of local cohomology modules we improve some non-finiteness results on the top non-zero local cohomology modules with respect to an ideal.
We compute support of formal cohomology modules in a serial of non-trivial cases. Applications are given. For example, we compute injective dimension of certain local cohomology modules in terms of dimension of their's support.
We investigate Matlis duals of local cohomology modules and prove that, in general, their zeroth Bass number with respect to the zero ideal is not finite. We also prove that, somewhat surprisingly, if we apply local cohomology again (i. e. to the Matlis dual of the local cohomology module), we get (under certain hypotheses) either zero or $E$, an $R$-injective hull of the residue field of the local ring $R$.
Let $(R,m, κ)$ be a local ring. We give a characterization of $R$-modules $M$ whose local cohomology is finite length up to some index in terms of asymptotic vanishing of Koszul cohomology on parameter ideals up to the same index. In particular, we show that a quasi-unmixed module $M$ is asymptotically Cohen-Macaulay if and only if $M$ is Cohen-Macaulay on the punctured spectrum if and only if $\sup\{\ell(H^i(f_1, \ldots, f_d;M))\mid \sqrt{f_1, \ldots, f_d} = m \mbox{, } i< d\}<\infty$.
Yoshizawa investigated when local cohomology modules have an annihilator that does not depend on the choice of the defining ideal. In this paper we refine his results and investigate the relationship between annihilators of local cohomology modules and restricted flat dimensions.
Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a $d$-dimensional commutative Noetherian ring $R$. In this paper we give some information on some last non-zero local cohomology modules known as top local cohomology modules in particular, $H^{d-1}_{\fa}(R)$.
This paper discusses the connection between the local cohomology modules and the Serre classes of $R$-modules. Such connection provided a common language for expressing some results about the local cohomology $R$-modules, that has appeared in different papers.
Matlis duals of local cohomology modules are investigated with respect to many different topics (see section 0 - Introduction). One of these topics are complete intersections - see Corollary 1.1.4.
The Hilbert functions and the regularity of the graded components of local cohomology of a bigraded algebra are considered. Explicit bounds for these invariants are obtained for bigraded hypersurface rings.
In this paper, some results on vanishing and non-vanishing of generalized local cohomology modules are presented and some relations between those modules and, Ext and ordinary local cohomology modules are studied. Also, several cofiniteness propositions for generalized local cohomology modules are established which, among other things, provide an alternative answer to a question in [Y2].
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and let $R = K[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$. Let $I$ be an ideal in $R$. Let $A_n(K)$ be the $n^{th}$ Weyl algebra over $K$. By a result of Lyubeznik, the local cohomology modules $H^i_I(R)$ are holonomic $A_n(K)$-modules for each $i \geq 0$. In this paper we compute the Euler characteristic of De-Rahm cohomology of $H^{\htt P}_P(R)$ for certain classes of prime ideals $P$ in $R$.
For a finite module $M$ over a local, equicharacteristic ring $(R,m)$, we show that the well-known formula $\cohdim(m,M)=\dim M$ becomes trivial if ones uses Matlis duals of local cohomology modules together with spectral sequences. We also prove a new, ring-theoretic vanishing criterion for local cohomology modules.
Let $J$ be an ideal of a noetherian local ring $R$. We show new results on the set of attached primes $\Att_R(\LCMo ^l_J(R))$ of a local cohomology module $\LCMo ^l_J(R)$. To prove our results we establish and use new relations between the set $\Att_R(\LCMo ^l_J(R))$ of attached primes of a local cohomology module and the set $\Ass_R(D(\LCMo ^l_J(R)))$ of associated primes of the Matlis dual of the same local cohomology module.
This is an expanded version of a lecture on finiteness properties of local cohomology modules given at the 48th Algebra Symposium held at Nagoya University in August 2003.
Lyubeznik's conjecture, (\cite{Ly1}, Remark 3.7) asserts the finiteness of the set ssociated primes of local cohomology modules for regular rings. But, in the case of ramified regular local ring, it is open. Recently, in Theorem 1.2 of \cite{Nu1}, it is proved that in any Noetherian regular local ring $S$ and for a fixed ideal $J\subset S$, associated primes of local cohomology $H^i_J(S)$ for $i\geq 0$ is finite, if it does not contain $p$. In this paper, we use this result to construct examples of local cohomology modules for ramified regular local ring so that they have finitely many associa…
Some affirmative answers are given to Huneke's problems. The calculation of local cohomology modules with respect to an arbitrary pair of ideals $I,J$ can be reduced to calculation of local cohomology modules with respect to a pair of ideala whose first ideal is generated by any $k$-regular sequence in $I$.
We study a question raised by Eisenbud, Mustata, and Stillman regarding the injectivity of natural maps from Ext modules to local cohomology modules. We obtain some positive answers to this question which extend earlier results of Lyubeznik. In the process, we also prove a vanishing theorem for local cohomology modules which connects theorems previously known in the case of positive characteristic and in the case of monomial ideals.
After motivating the question we prove various results about the set of associated primes of Matlis duals of top local cohomology modules. In some cases we can calculate this set, for the general situation we present a conjecture. An easy application of this theory is the well-known fact that Krull dimension can be expressed by the vanishing of local cohomology modules.
We construct an example where a local cohomology module of a hypersurface has p-torsion elements for every prime integer p, and consequently has infinitely many associated prime ideals. We also answer a related question of Hochster.
In this paper, we prove some well-known results on local cohomology with respect to a pair of ideals in graded version, such as, Independence Theorem, Lichtenbaum-Harshorne Vanishing Theorem, Basic Finiteness and Vanishing Theorem, among others. Besides, we present a generalized version of Melkersson Theorem about Artinianess of modules and a result concerning Artinianess of local cohomology modules.
In this paper we present a condition on a local Cohen-Macaulay F-injective ring of positive characteristic $p > 2$ which implies that its top local cohomology module with support in the maximal ideal has finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules.
Lyubeznik conjectured that local cohomology modules of regular rings have finitely many associated primes. We examine this conjecture for polynomial rings over the integers, and record some equational identities that arise from studying special cases.
In this paper, we show that for an $F$-pure local ring $(R,\m)$, all local cohomology modules $H_{\m}^i(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules. This answers positively an open question raised by F.Enescu and M.Hochster. We also prove that if $(R,\m)$ is excellent and is $F$-pure on the punctured spectrum, then all local cohomology modules have finite length in the category of $R$-modules with Frobenius action. Finally, we show that the property that all $H_{\m}^(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules passes to localizations.
