Matlis duals of local cohomology modules are investigated with respect to many different topics (see section 0 - Introduction). One of these topics are complete intersections - see Corollary 1.1.4.
After motivating the question we prove various results about the set of associated primes of Matlis duals of top local cohomology modules. In some cases we can calculate this set, for the general situation we present a conjecture. An easy application of this theory is the well-known fact that Krull dimension can be expressed by the vanishing of local cohomology modules.
Let $J$ be an ideal of a noetherian local ring $R$. We show new results on the set of attached primes $\Att_R(\LCMo ^l_J(R))$ of a local cohomology module $\LCMo ^l_J(R)$. To prove our results we establish and use new relations between the set $\Att_R(\LCMo ^l_J(R))$ of attached primes of a local cohomology module and the set $\Ass_R(D(\LCMo ^l_J(R)))$ of associated primes of the Matlis dual of the same local cohomology module.
We use a result of Hellus about generalized local duality to describe some generalized Matlis duals for certain quasi-\F-modules. Furthermore, we apply this description to obtain examples for non-artinian local cohomology modules by the theory of \F-modules. In particular, we get a new view on Hartshorne's counterexample for a conjecture by Grothendieck about the finiteness of $Hom_R(R/I,H^i_I(R))$ for a noetherian local Ring $R$ and an ideal $I \subseteq R$.
In the first section of this paper we present generalizations of known results on the set of associated primes of Matlis duals of local cohomology modules; we prove these generalizations by using a new technique. In section 2 we compute the set of associated primes of the Matlis dual of $\LCMo ^{d-1}_J(R)$, where $R$ is a $d$-dimensional local ring and $J\subseteq R$ an ideal such that $\dim (R/J)=1$ and $\LCMo ^d_J(R)=0$.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian regular local ring containing a field of characteristic $p>0$ and $I$ a nonzero ideal of $R$. In this short note, we prove that if $\operatorname{H}^i_I(R)\neq 0$, then $ \operatorname{Supp}_R(D(\operatorname{H}^i_{I}(R)))=\operatorname{Spec}(R)$.
Generalizing the known results on graded rings and modules, we formulate and prove the equivariant version of the local duality on schemes with a group action. We also prove an equivariant analogue of Matlis duality.
In continuation of [1] we study associated primes of Matlis duals of local cohomology modules (MDLCM). We combine ideas from Helmut Zöschinger on coassociated primes of arbitrary modules with results from [1], [4], [5], [6] and obtain partial answers to questions which were left open in [1]. These partial answers give further support for conjecture $(*)$ from [1] on the set of associated primes of MDLCMs. In addition, and also inspired by ideas from Zöschinger, we prove some non-finiteness results of local cohomology.
We investigate Matlis duals of local cohomology modules and prove that, in general, their zeroth Bass number with respect to the zero ideal is not finite. We also prove that, somewhat surprisingly, if we apply local cohomology again (i. e. to the Matlis dual of the local cohomology module), we get (under certain hypotheses) either zero or $E$, an $R$-injective hull of the residue field of the local ring $R$.
For a Noetherian local ring $(R,{\mathfrak m})$ with $\mathfrak p\in \Spec(R)$ we denote $E_R(R/\mathfrak p)$ by the $R$-injective hull of $R/\mathfrak p$. We will show that it has an $\hat{R}^\mathfrak p$-module structure and there is an isomorphism $E_R(R/\mathfrak p)\cong E_{\hat{R}^\mathfrak p}(\hat{R}^\mathfrak p/\mathfrak p\hat{R}^\mathfrak p)$ where $\hat{R}^\mathfrak p$ stands for the $\mathfrak p$-adic completion of $R$. Moreover for a complete Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ the module $D(E_R(R/\mathfrak p))$ is isomorphic to $\hat{R}_\mathfrak{p}$ provided that $\dim(R/\mathfrak p)=1$ and $…
Let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal of a local ring $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ with $c = \mathrm{cd}(\mathfrak{a},R)$ the cohomological dimension of $\mathfrak{a}$ in $R$. In the case that $c=\dim R$, we first give a bound for depth~$D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R))$, where $c>2$ and $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is complete. Later, $H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R) \otimes_R H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R)$, $D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R)) \otimes_R D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R))$ and $H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R) \otimes_R D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R))$ are examined. In the case $c=\dim R-1$, the set Att$_R H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R)$ is considered.
We introduce and study "quasidualizing" modules. An artinian R-module T is quasidualizing if the homothety map \hat R\rightarrow Hom(T,T) is an isomorphism and Ext_R^i(T,T)=0 for each integer i>0. Quasidualizing modules are associated to semidualizing modules via Matlis duality. We investigate the associations via Matlis duality between subclasses of the Auslander class and Bass class and subclasses of derived T-reflexive modules.
The number of equations needed to cut out a variety given by an ideal is called the arithmetic rank (of the ideal). It was shown in [8] that the notion of arithmetic rank is strongly related to the concept of regular sequences on the Matlis duals of certain local cohomology modules and thus is related to the set of associated primes of such Matlis duals. While in [8] the general situation with no restrictions on arithmetic rank and cohomological dimension was investigated, this work concentrates on the case ``cohomological dimension of the given ideal is (at most) one'' and also on the interpl…
For a finite module $M$ over a local, equicharacteristic ring $(R,m)$, we show that the well-known formula $\cohdim(m,M)=\dim M$ becomes trivial if ones uses Matlis duals of local cohomology modules together with spectral sequences. We also prove a new, ring-theoretic vanishing criterion for local cohomology modules.
Let I be an ideal of a Complete Cohen-Macaulay local ring R of dimension n. We wil show that the natural homomorphism Rto HomR(HcI(KR), HcI(KR)) is an isomorphism provided that I is a cohomologically compltete intersection ideal of grade c where KR (resp. HiI(.)) denote the canonical module (resp. i-th local cohomology with respect to the ideal I) of R. The same result is true for the Matlis dual of HcI(KR).
Let R be a local complete ring. For an R-module M the canonical ring map R\to End_R(M) is in general neither injective nor surjective; we show that it is bijective for every local cohomology module M := H^h_I(R) if H^l_I(R) = 0 for every l\neq h(:= height(I)) (I an ideal of R); furthermore the same holds for the Matlis dual of such a module. As an application we prove new criteria for an ideal to be a set-theoretic complete intersection.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1503.05523 and arXiv:1605.03934. We extend the classical Harrison-Matlis module category equivalences to a triangulated equivalence between the derived categories of the abelian categories of torsion modules and contramodules over a Matlis domain. This generalizes to the case of any commutative ring $R$ with a fixed multiplicative system $S$ such that the $R$-module $S^{-1}R$ has projective dimension $1$. The latter equivalence connects complexes of $R$-modules with $S$-torsion and $S$-contramodule cohomology modules. It takes a nicer form of an equivalence betw…
We provide a formula (see Theorem 1.5) for the Matlis dual of the injective hull of $R/\mathfrak{p}$ where $\mathfrak p$ is a one dimensional prime ideal in a local complete Gorenstein domain $(R,\mathfrak{m})$. This is related to results of Enochs and Xu (see [4] and [3]). We prove a certain 'dual' version of the Hartshorne-Lichtenbaum vanishing (see Theorem 2.2). There is a generalization of local duality to cohomologically complete intersection ideals $I$ in the sense that for $I=\mathfrak{m}$ we get back the classical Local Duality Theorem. We determine the exact class of modules to which …
Let $I$ be an ideal of a local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$ with $d = \dim R.$ For the local cohomology module $H^i_I(R)$ it is a well-known fact that it vanishes for $i > d$ and is an Artinian $R$-module for $i = d.$ In the case that the Hartshorne-Lichtenbaum Vanishing Theorem fails, that is $H^d_I(R) \not= 0,$ we explore its fine structure. In particular, we investigate its endomorphism ring and related connectedness properties. In the case $R$ is complete we prove - as a technical tool - that $H^d_I(R) \simeq H^d_{\mathfrak m}(R/J)$ for a certain ideal $J \subset R.$ Thus, properties of $H^d_I(R…
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a relative Cohen-Macaulay local ring with respect to an ideal $\fa$ of $R$ and set $c:=\h\fa$. In this paper, we investigate some properties of the Matlis dual $\H_{\fa}^c(R)^{\vee}$ of the $R$-module $\H_{\fa}^c(R)$ and we show that such modules treat like canonical modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Also, we provide some duality and equivalence results with respect to the module $\H_{\fa}^c(R)^{\vee}$ and so these results lead to achieve generalizations of some known results, such as the Local Duality Theorem, which have been provided over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring w…
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a local ring and $(-)^{\vee}$ denote the Matlis duality functor. We investigate the relationship between Foxby equivalence and local duality through generalized local cohomology modules. Assume that $R$ possesses a normalized dualizing complex $D$ and $X$ and $Y$ are two homologically bounded complexes of $R$-modules with finitely generated homology modules. We present several duality results for $\fm$-section complex ${\bf R}Γ_{\fm}({\bf R}\Hom_R(X,Y))$. In particular, if G-dimension of $X$ and injective dimension of $Y$ are finite, then we show that $${\bf R}Γ_{\fm}({\bf R}\…
Let $A$ be a complete local ring with a coefficient field $k$ of characteristic zero, and let $Y$ be its spectrum. The de Rham homology and cohomology of $Y$ have been defined by R. Hartshorne using a choice of surjection $R \rightarrow A$ where $R$ is a complete regular local $k$-algebra: the resulting objects are independent of the chosen surjection. We prove that the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequences abutting to the de Rham homology and cohomology of $Y$, beginning with their $E_2$-terms, are independent of the chosen surjection (up to a degree shift in the homology case) and consist of fini…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m},k)$ denote a local ring. For $I$ and $J$ ideals of $R$, for all integer $i$, let $H^i_{I,J}(-)$ denote the $i$-th local cohomology functor with respect to $(I,J)$. Here we give a generalized version of Local Duality Theorem for local cohomology defined by a pair of ideals. Also, for $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module, we study the behavior of the endomorphism rings $H^t_{I,J}(M)$ and $D(H^t_{I,J}(M))$ where $t$ is the smallest integer such that the local cohomology with respect to a pair of ideals is non-zero and $D(-):= {\rm Hom}_R(-,E_R(k))$ is the Matlis dual functo…
We introduce a local homology theory for linearly compact modules which is in some sense dual to the local cohomology theory of A. Grothendieck. Some basic properties such as the noetherianness, the vanishing and non-vanishing of local homology modules of linearly compact modules are proved. A duality theory between local homology and local cohomology modules of linearly compact modules is developed by using Matlis duality and Macdonald duality. As consequences of the duality theorem we obtain some generalizations of well-known results in the theory of local cohomology for semi-discrete linear…
We compute the GL-equivariant description of the local cohomology modules with support in the ideal of maximal minors of a generic matrix, as well as of those with support in the ideal of 2n x 2n Pfaffians of a (2n+1)x(2n+1) generic skew-symmetric matrix. As an application, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulay modules of covariants for the action of the special linear group SL(G) on G^m. The main tool we develop is a method for computing certain Ext modules based on the geometric technique for computing syzygies and on Matlis duality.
Exploiting the interior-closure duality developed by Epstein and R.G., we show that for the class of Matlis dualizable modules $\mathcal{M}$ over a Noetherian local ring, when cl is a Nakayama closure and i its dual interior, there is a duality between cl-reductions and i-expansions that leads to a duality between the cl-core of modules in $\mathcal{M}$ and the i-hull of modules in $\mathcal{M}^\vee$. We further show that many algebra and module closures and interiors are Nakayama and describe a method to compute the interior of ideals using closures and colons. We use our methods to give a un…
We consider the (graded) Matlis dual $\DD(M)$ of a graded $\D$-module $M$ over the polynomial ring $R = k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ ($k$ is a field of characteristic zero), and show that it can be given a structure of $\D$-module in such a way that, whenever $\dim_kH^i_{dR}(M)$ is finite, then $H^i_{dR}(M)$ is $k$-dual to $H^{n-i}_{dR}(\DD(M))$. As a consequence, we show that if $M$ is a graded $\D$-module such that $H^n_{dR}(M)$ is a finite-dimensional $k$-space, then $\dim_k(H^n_{dR}(M))$ is the maximal integer $s$ for which there exists a surjective $\D$-linear homomorphism $M \rightarrow E^s$, wh…
We prove a duality theorem for graded algebras over a field that implies several known duality results : graded local duality, versions of Serre duality for local cohomology and of Suzuki duality for generalized local cohomology, and Herzog-Rahimi bigraded duality.
Let $Δ$ be a triangulated homology ball whose boundary complex is $\partialΔ$. A result of Hochster asserts that the canonical module of the Stanley--Reisner ring of $Δ$, $\mathbb F[Δ]$, is isomorphic to the Stanley--Reisner module of the pair $(Δ, \partialΔ)$, $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$. This result implies that an Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ,\partial Δ]$ is (up to a shift in grading) isomorphic to the Matlis dual of the corresponding Artinian reduction of $\mathbb F[Δ]$. We establish a generalization of this duality to all triangulations of connected orientable homology manifolds with …
In this paper we study local cohomology of finitely generated bigraded modules over a standard bigraded ring with respect to the irrelevant bigraded ideals and establish a duality theorem. Several applications are considered.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective Calabi-Yau variety and $L$ a Koszul line bundle on $X$. We show that for Betti numbers of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over the homogeneous coordinate ring $A$ of $X$ there are formulas similar to the formulas for cohomology number. This similarity is realized via the box-product resolution of the diagonal $Δ_X \subset X \times X$.
Similar to the modular vector fields in Poisson geometry, modular derivations are defined for smooth Poisson algebras with trivial canonical bundle. By twisting Poisson module with the modular derivation, the Poisson cochain complex with values in any Poisson module is proved to be isomorphic to the Poisson chain complex with values in the corresponding twisted Poisson module. Then a version of twisted Poincaré duality is proved between the Poisson homologies and cohomologies. Furthermore, a notion of pseudo-unimodular Poisson structure is defined. It is proved that the Poisson cohomology as a…
We prove a sheaf-theoretic derived-category generalization of Greenlees-May duality (a far-reaching generalization of Grothendieck's local duality theorem): for a quasi-compact separated scheme X and a "proregular" subscheme Z---for example, any separated noetherian scheme and any closed subscheme---there is a sort of sheafified adjointness between local cohomology supported in Z and left-derived completion along Z. In particular, the i-th left-derived completion functor is the "local homology" sheaf $Ext^i(\RΓ_ZØ_X, -)$. Sheafified generalizations of a number of duality theorems scattered abo…
The paper describes a duality phenomenon for cohomology theories with the character of Gorenstein rings. For a connective cohomology theory with the p-local integers in degree 0, and coefficient ring R_* Gorenstein of shift 0, this states that for X with R_*(X) torsion, we have R^*(X)=Σ^a Hom( R_*(X), Z/p^{\infty}). A corresponding statement for modules over a commutative Gorenstein ring spectrum is also proved. [Minor typographical and bibliographic changes to the last version.]
We give a rigorous mathematical proof for the validity of the toric sheaf cohomology algorithm conjectured in the recent paper by R. Blumenhagen, B. Jurke, T. Rahn, and H. Roschy (arXiv:1003.5217). We actually prove not only the original algorithm but also a speed-up version of it. Our proof is independent from (in fact appeared earlier on the arXiv than) the proof by H. Roschy and T. Rahn (arXiv:1006.2392), and has several advantages such as being shorter and cleaner and can also settle the additional conjecture on "Serre duality for Betti numbers" which was raised but unresolved in arXiv:100…
