The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund.
Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties.
We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.
We use the Jacobi-Trudi formula to execute "explicit" evaluation of determinants of Stirling numbers of both kinds. We also offer a Maple package accompanying the paper on the personal websites at the end of the second page.
In 2007 Lam and Pylyavskyy found a combinatorial formula for the dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are the dual basis of the stable Grothendieck polynomials with respect to the Hall inner product. In 2016 Galashin, Grinberg, and Liu introduced refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials by putting additional sequence of parameters in the combinatorial formula of Lam and Pylyavskyy. Grinberg conjectured a Jacobi--Trudi type formula for refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials. In this paper this conjecture is proved by using bijections of Lam and Pylyavskyy.
In their study of characters of minimal affinizations of representations of orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras, Chari and Greenstein conjectured that certain Jacobi-Trudi determinants satisfy an alternating sum formula. In this note, we prove their conjecture and slightly more. The proof relies on some symmetries of the ring of symmetric functions discovered by Koike and Terada. Using results of Hernandez, Mukhin-Young, and Naoi, this implies that the characters of minimal affinizations in types B, C, and D are given by a Jacobi-Trudi determinant.
We give an interpretation of the boson-fermion correspondence as a direct consequence of Jacobi-Trudi identity. This viewpoint enables us to construct from a generalized version of the Jacobi-Trudi identity the action of Clifford algebra on polynomial algebras that arrives as analogues of the algebra of symmetric functions. A generalized Giambelli identity is also proved to follow from that identity. As applications, we obtain explicit formulas for vertex operators corresponding to characters of the classical Lie algebras, shifted Schur functions, and generalized Schur symmetric functions asso…
We present new determinant expressions for regularized Schur multiple zeta values. These generalize the known Jacobi-Trudi formulae and can be used to quickly evaluate certain types of Schur multiple zeta values. Using these formulae we prove that every Schur multiple zeta value with alternating entries in 1 and 3 can be written as a polynomial in Riemann zeta values. Furthermore, we give conditions on the shape, which determine when such Schur multiple zetas are polynomials purely in odd or in even Riemann zeta values.
Let $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ be the Jacobi-Trudi matrix corresponding to the partition $λ$, so $\det\mathrm{JT}_λ$ is the Schur function $s_λ$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,\dots$. Set $x_1=\cdots=x_n=1$ and all other $x_i=0$. Then the entries of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ become polynomials in $n$ of the form ${n+j-1\choose j}$. We determine the Smith normal form over the ring $\mathbb{Q}[n]$ of this specialization of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$. The proof carries over to the specialization $x_i=q^{i-1}$ for $1\leq i\leq n$ and $x_i=0$ for $i>n$, where we set $q^n=y$ and work over the ring $\mathbb{Q}(q)[y]$.
Recently Galashin, Grinberg, and Liu introduced the refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are symmetric functions in $x=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ with additional parameters $t=(t_1,t_2,\dots)$. The refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are defined as a generating function for reverse plane partitions of a given shape. They interpolate between Schur functions and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy in 2007. Flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a more refined version of refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, where lower and…
In this paper, we work toward answering the following question: given a uniformly random algebra homomorphism from the ring of symmetric functions over the integers to a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, what is the probability that the Schur function $s_λ$ maps to zero? We show that this probability is always at least $1/q$ and is asymptotically $1/q$. Moreover, we give a complete classification of all shapes that can achieve probability $1/q$. In addition, we identify certain families of shapes where the corresponding Schur functions being sent to zero are independent events, and we look into the…
In the literature there are several determinant formulas for Schur functions: the Jacobi-Trudi formula, the dual Jacobi-Trudi formula, the Giambelli formula, the Lascoux-Pragacz formula, and the Hamel-Goulden formula, where the Hamel-Goulden formula implies the others. In this paper we use an identity proved by Bazin in 1851 to derive determinant identities involving Macdonald's 9th variation of Schur functions. As an application we prove a determinant identity for factorial Schur functions conjectured by Morales, Pak, and Panova. We also obtain a generalization of the Hamel-Goulden formula, w…
We prove Jacobi-Trudi-type determinantal formulas for skew dual Grothendieck polynomials which are $K$-theoretic deformations of Schur polynomials. We also prove a bialternant-type formula analogous to the classical definition of Schur polynomials.
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding fa…
The Jacobi--Trudi identity associates a symmetric function to any integer sequence. Let $Γ_{(t|X)}$ be the vertex operator defined by $Γ_{(t|X)} s_α=\sum_{n \in \mathbb{Z}} s_{(n,α)} [X] t^n$. We provide a combinatorial proof for the identity $Γ_{(t|X)} s_α= σ[tX] s_α\big[x-1/t\big] $ due to Thibon et al. We include an overview of all the combinatorial ideas behind this beautiful identity, including a combinatorial description for the expansion of $s_{(n,α)} [X] $ in the Schur basis, for any integer value of $n$.
The Jacobi-Trudi formulas imply that the minors of the banded Toeplitz matrices can be written as certain skew Schur polynomials. In 2012, Alexandersson expressed the corresponding skew partitions in terms of the indices of the struck-out rows and columns. In the present paper, we develop the same idea and obtain some new applications. First, we prove a slight generalization and modification of Alexandersson's formula. Then, we deduce corollaries about the cofactors and eigenvectors of banded Toeplitz matrices, and give new simple proofs to the corresponding formulas published by Trench in 198…
