We show that the parabolic equation $u_t + (-Δ)^s u = q(x) |u|^{α-1} u$ posed in a time-space cylinder $(0,T) \times \mathbb{R}^N$ and coupled with zero initial condition and zero nonlocal Dirichlet condition in $(0,T) \times (\mathbb{R}^N \setminus Ω)$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain, has at least one nontrivial nonnegative finite energy solution provided $α\in (0,1)$ and the nonnegative bounded weight function $q$ is separated from zero on an open subset of $Ω$. This fact contrasts with the (super)linear case $α\geq 1$ in which the only bounded finite energy solution is identically zero.
This article concerns the fractional elliptic equations \begin{equation*}(-Δ)^{s}u+λV(x)u=f(u), \quad u\in H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{equation*}where $(-Δ)^{s}$ ($s\in (0\,,\,1)$) denotes the fractional Laplacian, $λ>0$ is a parameter, $V\in C(\mathbb{R}^N)$ and $V^{-1}(0)$ has nonempty interior. Under some mild assumptions, we establish the existence of nontrivial solutions. Moreover, the concentration of solutions is also explored on the set $V^{-1}(0)$ as $λ\to\infty$.
We establish several results related to existence, nonexistence or bifurcation of positive solutions for a Dirichlet boundary value problem with in a smooth bounded domain. The main feature of this paper consists in the presence of a singular nonlinearity, combined with a convection term. Our approach takes into account both the sign of the potential and the decay rate around the origin of the singular nonlinearity. The proofs are based on various techniques related to the maximum principle for elliptic equations.
We consider a class of stationary Schrödinger-Poisson systems with a general nonlinearity $f(u)$ and coercive sign-changing potential $V$ so that the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ is indefinite. Previous results in this framework required $f$ to be strictly $3$-superlinear, thus missing the paramount case of the Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson system, where $f(t)=|t|^{2}t$; in this paper we fill this gap, obtaining non-trivial solutions when $f$ is not necessarily $3$-superlinear.
In this paper we consider a generalized Kirchhoff? equation in a bounded domain under the effect of a sublinear nonlinearity. Under suitable assumptions on the data of the problem we show that, with a simple change of variable, the equation can be reduced to a classical semilinear equation and then studied with standard tools.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N\geq1$) be a bounded and smooth domain and $a:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ be a sign-changing weight satisfying $\int_Ωa<0$. We prove the existence of a positive solution $u_{q}$ for the problem $(P_{a,q})$: $-Δu=a(x)u^{q}$ in $Ω$, $\frac{\partial u}{\partialν}=0$ on $\partialΩ$, if $q_{0}<q<1$, for some $q_{0}=q_{0}(a)>0$. In doing so, we improve the existence result previously established in [16]. In addition, we provide the asymptotic behavior of $u_{q}$ as $q\rightarrow1^{-}$. When $Ω$ is a ball and $a$ is radial, we give some explicit conditions on $q$ and $a$ e…
We report on some recent existence and uniqueness results for elliptic equations subject to Dirichlet boundary condition and involving a singular nonlinearity. We take into account the following types of problems: (i) singular problems with sublinear nonlinearity and two parameters; (ii) combined effects of asymptotically linear and singular nonlinearities in bifurcation problems; (iii) bifurcation for a class of singular elliptic problems with subquadratic convection term. In some concrete situations we also establish the asymptotic behaviour of the solution around the bifurcation point. Our …
This paper is devoted to study a class of nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equations: \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{s}u+V(x)u=f(x,u), \quad \text{in}\: \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $s\in (0,1)$, $\ N>2s$, $(-Δ)^{s}$ stands for the fractional Laplacian. First, by using a variational approach, we establish the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for the above equation with a general potential $V(x)$ which is allowed to be sign-changing and a sublinear nonlinearity $f(x,u)$. Next, by using variational methods and the Moser iteration technique, we prove the existence of infinitely man…
This paper deals with the existence of positive solution for the singular quasilinear Schrödinger equation $-Δu -Δ(u^{2})u=h(x) u^{-γ} + f(x,u)~\mbox{in} ~ Ω,$ where $γ> 1$, $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}, (N\geq 3)$ is a bounded smooth domain, $0<h\in L^{1}(Ω)$, $f$ is a measurable function that can change signal and can be sublinear or has critical growth. Inspired by Sun \cite{Y} we derive a compatible condition on the couple $(h(x),γ)$, which is optimal for the existence of $H_{0}^{1}$-solution for this problem.
We study the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for a family of fractional Kirchhoff equations with critical nonlinearity of the form \begin{equation*} M\left(\int_Ω|(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}u|^2dx\right)(-Δ)^α u= λf(x)|u|^{q-2}u+|u|^{2^*_α-2}u\;\; \text{in}\; Ω,\;u=0\;\textrm{in}\;\mathbb R^n\setminus Ω, \end{equation*} where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ is a smooth bounded domain, $ M(t)=a+\varepsilon t, \; a, \; \varepsilon>0,\; 0<α<1, \; 2α<n<4α$ and $ \; 1<q<2$. Here $2^*_α={2n}/{(n-2α)}$ is the fractional critical Sobolev exponent, $λ$ is a positive parameter and the coefficient $f(x)$ is…
We consider nonlinear second order elliptic problems of the type \[ -Δu=f(u) \text{ in } Ω, \qquad u=0 \text{ on } \partial Ω, \] where $Ω$ is an open $C^{1,1}$-domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$, under some general assumptions on the nonlinearity that include the case of a sublinear pure power $f(s)=|s|^{p-1}s$ with $0<p<1$ and of Allen-Cahn type $f(s)=λ(s-|s|^{p-1}s)$ with $p>1$ and $λ>λ_2(Ω)$ (the second Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian). We prove the existence of a least energy nodal (i.e. sign changing) solution, and of a nodal solution of mountain-pass type. We then give explicit e…
In this paper we consider a generalized fourth order nonlinear Kirchhoff equation in a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^{N}, N\geq2$ under Navier boundary conditions and with sublinear nonlinearity. We employ a change of variable which reduces the problem to a semilinear one. Then variational and topological tools are used in order to prove the existence of a solution.
We prove existence and multiplicity results for finite energy solutions to the nonlinear elliptic equation \[ -\triangle u+V\left( \left| x\right| \right) u=g\left( \left| x\right| ,u\right) \quad \textrm{in }Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{N},\ N\geq 3, \] where $Ω$ is a radial domain (bounded or unbounded) and $u$ satisfies $u=0$ on $\partial Ω$ if $Ω\neq \mathbb{R}^{N}$ and $u\rightarrow 0$ as $\left| x\right| \rightarrow \infty $ if $Ω$ is unbounded. The potential $V$ may be vanishing or unbounded at zero or at infinity and the nonlinearity $g$ may be superlinear or sublinear. If $g$ is sublinear, …
We consider the following problem $ -Δ_{p}u= h(x,u) \mbox{ in }Ω$, $u\in W^{1,p}_{0}(Ω)$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $1<p<N$, with a smooth boundary. In this paper we assume that $h(x,u)=a(x)f(u)+b(x)g(u)$ such that $f$ is regularly varying of index $p-1$ and superlinear at infinity. The function $g$ is a $p$-sublinear function at zero. The coefficients $a$ and $b$ belong to $L^{k}(Ω)$ for some $k>\frac{N}{p}$ and they are without sign condition. Firstly, we show a priori bound on solutions, then by using variational arguments, we prove the existence of at least two non…
Compactons are studied in the framework of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with the sublinear nonlinearity. Compactons represent localized bell-shaped waves of either polarity which propagate to the same direction as waves of the linear KdV equation. Their amplitude and width are inverse proportional to their speed. The energetic stability of compactons with respect to symmetric compact perturbations with the same support is proven analytically. Dynamics of compactons is studied numerically, including evolution of pulse-like disturbances and interactions of compactons of the same or oppos…
We prove new results on the existence of positive radial solutions of the elliptic equation $-Δu= λh(|x|,u)$ in an annular domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}, N\geq 2$. Existence of positive radial solutions are determined under the conditions that the nonlinearity function $h(t,u)$ is either superlinear or sublinear growth in $u$ or satisfies some upper and lower inequalities on $h$. Our discussion is based on a fixed point theorem due to a revised version of a fixed point theorem of Gustafson and Schmitt.
In the present paper, we deal with a new compact embedding theorem for a subspace of the new fractional Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. We also establish some useful inequalities which yields to apply the variational methods. Using these abstract results, we study the existence of infinitely many nontrivial solutions for a class of fractional Orlicz-Sobolev Schrödinger equations whose simplest prototype is $$(-\triangle)^{s}_{m}+V(x)m(u)u=f(x,u),\ x\in\mathbb{R}^{N},$$ where $s\in ]0,1[$, $N\geq2$, $(-\triangle)^{s}_{m}$ is fractional $M$-Laplace operator and the nonlinearity $f$ is sublinear as $|u| \…
We consider a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with power nonlinearity, either on a compact manifold without boundary, or on the whole space in the presence of harmonic confinement, in space dimension one and two. Up to introducing an extra superlinear damping to prevent finite time blow up, we show that the presence of a sublinear damping always leads to finite time extinction of the solution in 1D, and that the same phenomenon is present in the case of small mass initial data in 2D.
We prove homogenization for a class of nonconvex (possibly degenerate) viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations in stationary ergodic random environments in one space dimension. The results concern Hamiltonians of the form $G(p)+V(x,ω)$, where the nonlinearity $G$ is a minimum of two or more convex functions with the same absolute minimum, and the potential $V$ is a bounded stationary process satisfying an additional scaled hill and valley condition. This condition is trivially satisfied in the inviscid case, while it is equivalent to the original hill and valley condition of A. Yilmaz and O. Zeitoun…
