In this mostly expository article, we consider certain homological aspects of branching laws for representations of a group restricted to its subgroups in the context of $p$-adic groups. We follow our earlier paper, ICM 2018 proceedings, updating it with some more recent works. In particular, following Chan and Chan-Savin, see many of their papers listed in the bibliography, we have emphasized in this work that the restriction of a (generic) representation $π$ of a group $G$ to a closed subgroup $H$ (most of the paper is written in the context of GGP) turns out to be a projective representation on most Bernstein blocks of the category of smooth representations of $H$. Further, once $π|_H$ is a projective module in a particular Bernstein block, it has a simple structure.
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field. This paper studies homological properties of irreducible smooth representations restricted from $\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(F)$ to $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$. A main result shows that each Bernstein component of an irreducible smooth representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(F)$ restricted to $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ is indecomposable. We also classify all irreducible representations which are projective when restricting from $\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(F)$ to $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$. A main tool of our study is a notion of left and right derivatives, extending some previous work joint with Go…
The unitary principal series representations of $G=GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ induced from a character of the maximal parabolic subgroup $P=(GL(1,\mathbb{C})\times GL(n-1,\mathbb{C}))\ltimes\mathbb{C}^{n-1}$ attain the minimal Gelfand--Kirillov dimension among all infinite-dimensional unitary representations of $G$. We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of these representations to symmetric subgroups of $G$.
We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of minimal holomorphic representations to symmetric subgroups in the case where the restriction is discretely decomposable. For holomorphic pairs the minimal holomorphic representation decomposes into a direct sum of lowest weight representations which is made explicit. For non-holomorphic pairs the restriction is shown to be irreducible and identified with a known representation. We further study a conjecture by Kobayashi on the behaviour of associated varieties under restriction and confirm this conjecture in the setting of this paper.
In this paper we consider the unitary symmetric spaces of the form X=U(p,q)/U(1)U(p,q-1) and their discrete series representations. Inspired by the work of A.Venkatesh and Y.Sekellarides on L-groups of p-adic spherical spaces we formulate and prove natural relative branching laws for the restriction to smaller subgroups of the same type and corresponding unitary spaces. We think of this as steps to formulation and proving Gan Gross Prasad conjectures for unitary spaces. Using period integral and some results of T.Kobayashi we prove an analogue of thesis conjectures.
We give a complete description of the discrete spectra in the branching law $Π|_{G'}$ with respect to the pair $(G,G')=(O(p,q), O(p',q') \times O(p'',q''))$ for irreducible unitary representations $Π$ of $G$ that are "geometric quantization" of minimal elliptic coadjoint orbits. We also construct explicitly all holographic operators and prove a closed Parseval-type formula.
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedian local field of characteristic zero and $E/F$ a quadratic extension. The aim of the present article is to study the multiplicity of an irreducible admissible representation of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$ occurring in an irreducible admissible genuine representation of non-trivial two fold covering $\widetilde{\rm GL}_2(E)$ of ${\rm GL}_2(E)$.
In this paper we study branching laws for certain unitary representations. This is done on the smooth vectors via a version of the {\it period integrals}, studied in number theory, and also closely connected to the {\it symmetry-breaking operators}, introduced by T.~Kobayashi. We exhibit non-vanishing symmetry breaking operators for the restriction of a representation $Π$ in the discrete spectrum for real hyperboloids to representations of smaller orthogonal groups. In the last part we discuss some conjectures for the restriction of representations in Arthur packets containing the representati…
We say a representation V of a group G has stability if its multiplicities m^{G}_{V}(λ) is dependent only on some equivalence class of λfor a sufficiently large parameter λ. In this paper, we prove that the restriction of a holomorphic discrete series representation with respect to any holomorphic symmetric pairs has stability. As a corollary, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on multiplicity-freeness of the branching laws in this setting. This condition is same as the sufficient condition given by the theory of visible actions. We prove a general theorem before we show the stabilit…
Let g' and g be isomorphic to any two of the Lie algebras gl(infty), sl(infty), sp(infty), and so(infty). Let M be a simple tensor g-module. We introduce the notion of an embedding of g' into g of general tensor type and derive branching laws for triples g', g, and M, where the embedding of g' into g is of general tensor type. More precisely, since M is in general not semisimple as a g'-module, we determine the socle filtration of M over g'. Due to the description of embeddings of classical locally finite Lie algebras given by Dimitrov and Penkov, our results hold for all possible embeddings o…
Let $G/H$ be a reductive symmetric space over a $p$-adic field $F$, the algebraic groups $G$ and $H$ being assumed semisimple of relative rank $1$. One of the branching problems for the Steinberg representation $\St_G$ of $G$ is the determination of the dimension of the intertwining space ${\rm Hom}_H (\St_G ,π)$, for any irreducible representation $π$ of $H$. In this work we do not compute this dimension, but show how it is related to the dimensions of some other intertwining spaces ${\rm Hom}_{K_i} ({\tilde π} ,1)$, for a certain finite family $K_i$, $i=1,...,r$, of anisotropic subgroups of …
We consider the (projective) representations of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a symmetric tube domain $V\oplus iΩ$ that are obtained by analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series. For a representation corresponding to a discrete point in the Wallach set, we find the decomposition under restriction to the identity component of $GL(Ω)$. Using Riesz distributions, an explicit intertwining operator is constructed as an analytic continuation of an integral operator. The density for the Plancherel measure involves quotients of $Γ$-functions and the $c$-function for a symmet…
In this paper we study the branching law for the restriction from $SU(n,m)$ to $SO(n,m)$ of the minimal representation in the analytic continuation of the scalar holomorphic discrete series. We identify the the group decomposition with the spectral decomposition of the action of the Casimir operator on the subspace of $S(O(n) \times O(m))$-invariants. The Plancherel measure of the decomposition defines an $L^2$-space of functions, for which certain continuous dual Hahn polynomials furnish an orthonormal basis. It turns out that the measure has point masses precisely when $n-m>2$. Under these c…
For a connected, noncompact matrix simple Lie group $G$ so that a maximal compact subgroup $K$ has three dimensional simple ideal, in this note we analyze the admissibility of the restriction of irreducible square integrable representations for the ambient group when they are restricted to certain subgroups that contains the three dimensional ideal. In this setting we provide a formula for the multiplicity of the irreducible factors. Also, for general $G$ such that $G/K$ is an Hermitian $G$-manifold we give a necessary and sufficient condition so that a square integrable representations of the…
The restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a real reductive group $G$ to a reductive subgroup $H$ decomposes into a direct integral of irreducible unitary representations $τ$ of $H$ with multiplicities $m(π,τ)\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$. We show that on the smooth vectors of $π$, the direct integral is pointwise defined. This implies that $m(π,τ)$ is bounded above by the dimension of the space $\operatorname{Hom}_H(π^\infty|_H,τ^\infty)$ of intertwining operators between the smooth vectors, also called symmetry breaking operators, and provides a precise relation between t…
In this paper we consider the restriction of a unitary irreducible representation of type $A_{\mathfrak q}(λ)$ of $GL(4,{\mathbb R})$ to reductive subgroups $H$ which are the fixpoint sets of an involution. We obtain a formula for the restriction to the symplectic group and to $GL(2,{\mathbb C})$, and as an application we construct in the last section some representations in the cuspidal spectrum of the symplectic and the complex general linear group. In addition to working directly with the cohmologically induced module to obtain the branching law, we also introduce the useful concept of pseu…
This paper generalizes the GGP conjectures which were earlier formulated for tempered or more generally generic L-packets to Arthur packets, especially for the nongeneric L-packets arising from Arthur parameters. The paper introduces the key notion of a relevant pair of A-parameters which governs the branching laws for $GL_n$ and all classical groups over both local fields and global fields. It plays a role for all the branching problems studied in our earlier work including Bessel models and Fourier-Jacobi models.
We begin with recalling the correspond theorem of induced modules and global sections of vector bundles. After that, we give a generalization of this theorem. Finally, we apply the result to branching laws, and give some concrete examples.
If $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, $H$ is a symmetric subgroup, and $π$ is a discrete series representation of $G$, the authors give a condition on the pair $(G,H)$ which guarantees that the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ contains each irreducible representation of $H$ with finite multiplicity. In addition, if $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, and $H\subset G$ is a closed, reductive subgroup of Harish-Chandra class, the authors show that the multiplicity function in the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ is constant along `continuous para…
Let $G$ be a noncompact connected simple Lie group, and $(G,G^Γ)$ a Klein four symmetric pair. In this paper, the author shows a necessary condition for the discrete decomposability of unitarizable simple $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules for Klein for symmetric pairs. Precisely, if certain conditions hold for $(G,G^Γ)$, there does not exist any unitarizable simple $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-module that is discretely decomposable as a $(\mathfrak{g}^Γ,K^Γ)$-module. As an application, for $G=\mathrm{E}_{6(-14)}$, the author obtains a complete classification of Klein four symmetric pairs $(G,G^Γ)$ with $G^Γ$ n…
Representation theory of $p$-adic groups naturally comes in the study of automorphic forms and one way to understand representations of a group is by restricting to its nice subgroups. D. Prasad studied the restriction for pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), D_{F}^{\times})$ where $E/F$ is a quadratic equation and $D_{F}$ is the unique quaternion division algebra, and $D_{F}^{\times} \hookrightarrow {\rm GL}_{2}(E)$. Prasad proved a multiplicity one result and a `dichotomy' relating the restriction for the pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_…
We give branching formulas from $so(7,\mathbb{C})$ to $\mathfrak{g}_2$ for generalized Verma modules attached to $\mathfrak{g}_2$-compatible parabolic subalgebras of $so(7,\mathbb{C})$, and branching formulas from $\mathfrak{g}_2$ to $sl(3,\mathbb{C})$ for generalized Verma modules attached to $sl(3,\mathbb{C})$-compatible parabolic subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}_2$ respectively, under some assumptions on the parameters of generalized Verma modules.
We study branching laws for a classical group $G$ and a symmetric subgroup $H$. Our approach is through the {\it branching algebra}, the algebra of covariants for $H$ in the regular functions on the natural torus bundle over the flag manifold for $G$. We give concrete descriptions of (natural subalgebras of) the branching algebra using classical invariant theory. In this context, it turns out that the ten classes of classical symmetric pairs $(G,H)$ are associated in pairs, $(G,H)$ and $(H',G')$, and that the (partial) branching algebra for $(G,H)$ also describes a branching law from $H'$ to $…
In this paper, we consider the branching law of the Speh representation $\mathrm{Sp}(π,n+l)$ of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n+2l}$ with respect to the block diagonal subgroup $\mathrm{GL}_n\times\mathrm{GL}_{n+2l}$ for any irreducible generic representation $π$ of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over any $p$-adic field. We use the Shalika model of $\mathrm{Sp}(π,n)$ to construct certain zeta integrals, which were defined by Ginzburg and Kaplan independently, and study them. Finally, using these zeta integrals, we obtain a nonzero $\mathrm{GL}_n\times\mathrm{GL}_{n+2l}$-map from $\mathrm{Sp}(π,n+l)$ to $τ\boxtimesτ^\veeχ_π…
This is a second paper in a series devoted to the minimal unitary representation of O(p,q). By explicit methods from conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, we find the branching law corresponding to restricting the minimal unitary representation to natural symmetric subgroups. In the case of purely discrete spectrum we obtain the full spectrum and give an explicit Parseval-Plancherel formula, and in the general case we construct an infinite discrete spectrum.
Let $G'$ be a complex semisimple group, and let $G \subseteq G'$ be a semisimple subgroup. We show that the branching cone of the pair $(G, G')$, which (asymptotically) parametrizes all pairs $(W, V)$ of irreducible finite-dimensional $G$-representations $W$ which occur as subrepresentations of a finite-dimensional irreducible $G'$-representation $V$, can be identified with the pseudo-effective cone, $\overline{\mbox{Eff}}(Y)$, of some GIT quotient $Y$ of the flag variety of the group $G \times G'$. Moreover, we prove that the quotient $Y$ is a Mori dream space. As a consequence, the global Ok…
Given irreducible representations $Π$ and $π$ of the rank one special orthogonal groups $G=SO(n+1,1)$ and $G'=SO(n,1)$ with nonsingular integral infinitesimal character, we state in terms of $θ$-stable parameter necessary and sufficient conditions so that \[ \operatorname{Hom}_{G'}(Π|_{G'}, π)\not = \{0\}. \] In the special case that both $Π$ and $π$ are tempered, this implies the Gross--Prasad conjectures for tempered representations of $SO(n+1,1) \times SO(n,1)$ which are nontrivial on the center. We apply these results to construct nonzero periods and distinguished representations. If both …
This article is devoted to branching problems for holomorphic discrete series representations of a conformal group $G$ of a tube domain $T_Omega$ over a symmetric cone $Ω$. More precisely, we analyse restrictions of such representations to the conformal group $G'$ of a tube domain $T_{Ω'}$ holomorphically embedded in $T_Ω$. The goal of this work is the explicit construction of the symmetry breaking and holographic operators in this geometrical setting. To do so, a stratification space for a symmetric cone is introduced. This structure put the light on a new functional model, called the \emph{s…
Consider the restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of a Lie group $G$ to its subgroup $H$. Kirillov's revolutionary idea on the orbit method suggests that the multiplicity of an irreducible $H$-module $ν$ occurring in the restriction $π|_H$ could be read from the coadjoint action of $H$ on $O^G \cap pr^{-1}(O^H)$ provided $π$ and $ν$ are "geometric quantizations" of a $G$-coadjoint orbit $O^G$ and an $H$-coadjoint orbit $O^H$,respectively, where $pr: \sqrt{-1} g^{\ast} \to \sqrt{-1} h^{\ast}$ is the projection dual to the inclusion $h \subset g$ of Lie algebras. Such results…
We initiate a new study of differential operators with symmetries and combine this with the study of branching laws for Verma modules of reductive Lie algebras. By the criterion for discretely decomposable and multiplicity-free restrictions of generalized Verma modules [T. Kobayashi, http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00031-012-9180-y {Transf. Groups (2012)}], we are brought to natural settings of parabolic geometries for which there exist unique equivariant differential operators to submanifolds. Then we apply a new method (F-method) relying on the Fourier transform to find singular vectors in genera…
Let $G$ be a complex simple Lie group, and let $U \subseteq G$ be a maximal compact subgroup. Assume that $G$ admits a homogenous space $X=G/Q=U/K$ which is a compact Hermitian symmetric space. Let $\mathscr{L} \rightarrow X$ be the ample line bundle which generates the Picard group of $X$. In this paper we study the restrictions to $K$ of the family $(H^0(X, \mathscr{L}^k))_{k \in \N}$ of irreducible $G$-representations. We describe explicitly the moment polytopes for the moment maps $X \rightarrow \fk^*$ associated to positive integer multiples of the Kostant-Kirillov symplectic form on $X$,…
We consider branching laws for the restriction of some irreducible unitary representations $Π$ of $G=O(p,q)$ to its subgroup $H=O(p-1,q)$. In Kobayashi (arXiv:1907.07994), the irreducible subrepresentations of $O(p-1,q)$ in the restriction of the unitary $Π|_{O(p-1,q) }$ are determined. By considering the restriction of packets of irreducible representations we obtain another very simple branching law, which was conjectured in Orsted-Speh (arXiv:1907.07544).
Let $G=\operatorname{O}(1,n+1)$ with maximal compact subgroup $K$ and let $Π$ be a unitary irreducible representation of $G$ with non-trivial $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-cohomology. Then $Π$ occurs inside a principal series representation of $G$, induced from the $\operatorname{O}(n)$-representation $\bigwedge\nolimits^p(\mathbb{C}^n)$ and characters of a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$ at the limit of the complementary series. Considering the subgroup $G'=\operatorname{O}(1,n)$ of $G$ with maximal compact subgroup $K'$, we prove branching laws and explicit Plancherel formulas for the restrictions to…
In this paper, we obtain explicit branching laws for all irreducible unitary representations of $\Spin(N,1)$ restricted to a parabolic subgroup $P$. The restriction turns out to be a finite direct sum of irreducible unitary representations of $P$. We also verify Duflo's conjecture for the branching law of tempered representations of $\Spin(N,1)$ with respect to a parabolic subgroup $P$. That is to show: in the framework of the orbit method, the branching law of a tempered representation is determined by the behavior of the moment map from the corresponding coadjoint orbit. A few key tools used…
In this paper we study the Gan-Gross-Prasad problem for finite classical groups. Our results provide complete answers for unipotent representations, and we obtain the explicit branching laws for these representations. Moreover, for arbitrary representations, we give a formula to reduce the Gan-Gross-Prasad problem to the restriction problem of Deligne-Lusztig characters.
In this article, we generalize Duflo's conjecture to understand the branching laws of non-discrete series. We give a unified description on the geometric side about the restriction of an irreducible unitary representation $π$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n(k)$, $k=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, to the mirabolic subgroup, where $π$ is attached to a certain kind of coadjoint orbit.
We prove a local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture on predicting the branching law for the non-tempered representations of general linear groups in the case of non-Archimedean field. We also generalize to Bessel and Fourier-Jacobi models and study a possible generalization to Ext-branching laws.
We wish to understand how irreducible representations of a group G behave when restricted to a subgroup G' (the branching problem). Our primary concern is with representations of reductive Lie groups, which involve both algebraic and analytic approaches. We divide branching problems into three stages: (A) abstract features of the restriction; (B) branching laws (irreducible decompositions of the restriction); and (C) construction of symmetry breaking operators on geometric models. We could expect a simple and detailed study of branching problems in Stages B and C in the settings that are {\it{…
Part I. We prove a one-to-one correspondence between differential symmetry breaking operators for equivariant vector bundles over two homogeneous spaces and certain homomorphisms for representations of two Lie algebras, in connection with branching problems of the restriction of representations. We develop a new method (F-method) based on the algebraic Fourier transform for generalized Verma modules, which characterizes differential symmetry breaking operators by means of certain systems of partial differential equations. In contrast to the setting of real flag varieties, continuous symmetry b…
The analysis of branching problems for restriction of representations brings the concept of symmetry breaking transform and holographic transform. Symmetry breaking operators decrease the number of variables in geometric models, whereas holographic operators increase it. Various expansions in classical analysis can be interpreted as particular occurrences of these transforms. From this perspective, we investigate two remarkable families of differential operators: the Rankin-Cohen operators and the holomorphic Juhl conformally covariant operators. Then we establish for the corresponding symmetr…
Hidden symmetry of a G'-space X is defined by an extension of the G'-action on X to that of a group G containing G' as a subgroup. In this setting, we study the relationship between the three objects: (A) global analysis on X by using representations of G (hidden symmetry); (B) global analysis on X by using representations of G'; (C) branching laws of representations of G when restricted to the subgroup G'. We explain a trick which transfers results for finite-dimensional representations in the compact setting to those for infinite-dimensional representations in the noncompact setting when $X_…
Small representations of a group bring us to large symmetries in a representation space. Analysis on minimal representations utilises large symmetries in their geometric models, and serves as a driving force in creating new interesting problems that interact with other branches of mathematics. This article discusses the following three topics that arise from minimal representations of the indefinite orthogonal group: 1. construction of conservative quantities for ultra-hyperbolic equations, 2. quantative discrete branching laws, 3. deformation of the Fourier transform with emphasis on the prom…
