The higher-dimensional Thompson groups $nV$, for $n \geq 2$, were introduced by Brin in 2005. We provide new presentations for each of these infinite simple groups. The first is an infinite presentation, analogous to the Coxeter presentation for the finite symmetric group, with generating set equal to the set of transpositions in $nV$ and reflecting the self-similar structure of $n$-dimensional Cantor space. We then exploit this infinite presentation to produce further finite presentations that are considerably smaller than those previously known.
Guralnick, Kantor, Kassabov and Lubotzky (J. Eur. Math. Soc. 13.2, 2011, 391-458) [GKKL] give 3-generator 7-relator presentations of $A_n$ and $S_n$ with bit-length $O(\log n)$ for $n\geq5$. This is the best possible bit-length, since $Ω(\log n)$ bits are required to specify the integer $n$ in the input. However, the generators do not satisfy the relations. This paper considers the relevant arguments given in [GKKL], identifies where the errors occur, and shows how they can be fixed in order to recover this result. The presentations are available in Magma.

We study finitely generated nilpotent groups $G$ given by full rank finite presentations $\langle A \mid R\rangle$ in the variety $\mathcal{N}_c$ of nilpotent groups of class at most $c$, where $c \geq 2$. We prove that if the deficiency $|A| - |R| $ is at least $2$ then the group $G$ is virtually free nilpotent, it is quasi finitely axiomatizable (in particular, first-order rigid), and it is almost (up to finite factors) directly indecomposable. One of the main results of the paper is that the Diophantine problem in nilpotent groups given by full rank finite presentations $\langle A \mid R\ra…
We study metabelian groups $G$ given by full rank finite presentations $\langle A \mid R \rangle_{\mathcal{M}}$ in the variety $\mathcal{M}$ of metabelian groups. We prove that $G$ is a product of a free metabelian subgroup of rank $\max\{0, |A|-|R|\}$ and a virtually abelian normal subgroup, and that if $|R| \leq |A|-2$ then the Diophantine problem of $G$ is undecidable, while it is decidable if $|R|\geq |A|$. We further prove that if $|R| \leq |A|-1$ then in any direct decomposition of $G$ all, but one, factors are virtually abelian. Since finite presentations have full rank asymptotically a…
A presentation as well as a structural description of the automorphism group of a family of 3-generator finite $p$-groups is given, $p$ being an odd prime.
We provide the structure of the unit group of $\f_{p^k}(\SL(3,2))$, where $p\geq 11$ is a prime and $\SL(3,2)$ denotes the $3\times 3$ invertible matrices over $\f_2$.
The famous strongly binary Goldbach's conjecture asserts that every even number $2n \geq 8$ can always be expressible as the sum of two distinct odd prime numbers. We use a new approach to dealing with this conjecture. Specifically, we apply the element order prime graphs of alternating groups of degrees $2n$ and $2n-1$ to characterize this conjecture, and present its six group-theoretic versions; and further prove that this conjecture is true for $p+1$ and $p-1$ whenever $p \geq 11$ is a prime number.
In this paper, we determine the class of finite 2-arc-transitive bicirculants. We show that a connected $2$-arc-transitive bicirculant is one of the following graphs: $C_{2n}$ where $n\geqslant 2$, $\K_{2n}$ where $n\geqslant 2$, $\K_{n,n}$ where $n\geqslant 3$, $ \K_{n,n}-n\K_2$ where $n\geqslant 4$, $B(\PG(d-1,q))$ and $B'(\PG(d-1,q))$ where $d\geq 3$ and $q$ is a prime power, $ X_1(4,q)$ where $q\equiv 3\pmod{4}$ is a prime power, $\K_{q+1}^{2d}$ where $q$ is an odd prime power and $d\geq 2$ dividing $q-1$, $ AT_Q(1+q,2d)$ where $d\mid q-1$ and $d\nmid \frac{1}{2}(q-1)$, $ AT_D(1+q,2d)$ whe…
Suppose $4|n$, $n\geq 8$, $F=F_n=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n+\barζ_n)$, and there is one prime $\mathfrak{p}=\mathfrak{p}_n$ above $2$ in $F_n$. We study amalgam presentations for $\operatorname{PU_{2}}(\mathbb{Z}[ζ_n, 1/2])$ and $\operatorname{PSU_{2}}(\mathbb{Z}[ζ_n, 1/2])$ with the Clifford-cyclotomic group in quantum computing as a subgroup. These amalgams arise from an action of these groups on the Bruhat-Tits tree $Δ=Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}$ for $\operatorname{SL_{2}}(F_\mathfrak{p})$ constructed via the Hamilton quaternions. We explicitly compute the finite quotient graphs and the resulting amalgams for $8…
Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime number, let $n\geq 2$ be a natural number and let $\text{Heis}(p^n)$ denote the Heisenberg group modulo $p^n$. We study the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence $E(\text{Heis}(p^n))$ associated to $\text{Heis}(p^n)$ considered as a split extension, and show that, $E(\text{Heis}(p^n))$ collapses in the third page. Moreover, for a fixed $p$, the spectral sequences $E(\text{Heis}(p^n))$ are isomorphic from the second page on.
We give a criterion of the existence of a presentation with a single relation for the commutator subgroup $RC_{\mathscr{K}}'$ of a right-angled Coxeter group $RC_{\mathscr{K}}$. Namely, we prove that $RC_{\mathscr{K}}'$ is a one-relator group if and only if $\mathscr{K}$ is either a $p$-cycle with $p\geqslant4$ or has the form ($p$-cycle)$*Δ^q$ with $p\geqslant4$ and $g\geqslant0$, where $Δ^q$ is a $q$-simplex.
