We provide a detailed analysis of the shock formation process for the non-isentropic 2d Euler equations in azimuthal symmetry. We prove that from an open set of smooth and generic initial data, solutions of Euler form a first singularity or gradient blow-up or shock. This first singularity is termed a Hölder $C^{\frac{1}{3}}$ pre-shock, and our analysis provides the first detailed description of this cusp solution. The novelty of this work relative to [Buckmaster-Drivas-Shkoller-Vicol, 2022] is that we herein consider a much larger class of initial data, allow for a non-constant initial entropy, allow for a non-trivial sub-dominant Riemann variable, and introduce a host of new identities to avoid apparent derivative loss due to entropy gradients. The method of proof is also new and robust, exploring the transversality of the three different characteristic families to transform space derivatives into time derivatives. Our main result provides a fractional series expansion of the Euler solution about the pre-shock, whose coefficients are computed from the initial data.
We prove shock formation for 3D Euler-Poisson system for electron fluid plasma. The shock solution we construct is of large initial data, also compactly supported during the lifespan. In addition, the blowup time and location can be computed explicitly.
We study the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We exhibit a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time 1/3-Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. Our proof, following the 3D shock formation result of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol, is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation m…
In this paper we construct unstable shocks in the context of 2D isentropic compressible Euler in azimuthal symmetry. More specifically, we construct initial data that when viewed in self-similar coordinates, converges asymptotically to the unstable $C^{\frac15}$ self-similar solution to the Burgers' equation. Moreover, we show the behavior is stable in $C^8$ modulo a two dimensional linear subspace. Under the azimuthal symmetry assumption, one cannot impose additional symmetry assumptions in order to isolate the corresponding manifold of initial data leading to stability: rather, we rely on mo…
This paper concerns with the existence of transonic shocks for steady Euler flows in a 3-D axisymmetric cylindrical nozzle, which are governed by the Euler equations with the slip boundary condition on the wall of the nozzle and a receiver pressure at the exit. Mathematically, it can be formulated as a free boundary problem with the shock front being the free boundary to be determined. In dealing with the free boundary problem, one of the key points is determining the position of the shock front. To this end, a free boundary problem for the linearized Euler system will be proposed, whose solut…
The relativistic full Euler equations for a Chaplygin gas are studied. The Riemann problem is solved constructively. There are two kinds of Riemann solutions, in which one consists of three contact discontinuities and the other involves a delta shock wave on which both state variables the rest mass density and the proper energy density simultaneously contain the Dirac delta functions. It is quite different from the previous ones on which only one state variable contains the Dirac delta function. The formation mechanism, generalized Rankine-Hugoniot relation and entropy condition are clarified …
We consider the 3D isentropic compressible Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We provide a constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial datum of finite energy, with no vacuum regions, with nontrivial vorticity present at the shock, and under no symmetry assumptions. We prove that for an open set of Sobolev-class initial data which are a small $L^ \infty $ perturbation of a constant state, there exist smooth solutions to the Euler equations which form a generic stable shock in finite time. The blow up time and location can be explicitly computed, and solutions at the blow up t…
In this paper, we show the shock formation to the compressible Euler equations with time-dependent damping $\frac{a\p u}{(1+t)^{\lam}}$ in three spatial dimensions without any symmetry conditions. It's well-known that for $\lam>1$, the damping is too weak to prevent the shock formation for suitably large data. However, the classical results only showed the finite existence of the solution. Follow the work by D.Christodoulou in\cite{christodoulou2007}, starting from the initial isentropic and irrotational short pulse data, we show the formation of shock is characterized by the collapse of the c…
This paper concerns the existence of transonic shocks for steady exothermically reacting Euler flows in an almost flat nozzle with the small rate of the exothermic reaction. One of the key points is to quantitatively determine the position of the shock front in the nozzle. We focus on the contributions of the perturbation of the flat nozzle and the exothermic reaction in determining the position of the shock front by comparing the orders of $σ$ and $κ$, where $σ$ represents the scale of the perturbation of the flat nozzle and $κ$ the rate of the exothermic reaction. To this end, a free boundar…
The question of (non-)uniqueness of one-dimensional self-similar solutions to the Riemann problem for hyperbolic systems of gas dynamics in sets of multi-dimensional admissible weak solutions was addressed in recent years in several papers culminating in [17] with the proof that the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler system with a power law pressure is ill-posed if the one-dimensional self-similar solution contains a shock. Natural question then arises whether the same holds also for a more involved system of equations, the full Euler system. After the first step in this direction was ma…
In this paper, we show the shock formation of the solutions to the 3-dimensional (3D) compressible isentropic and irrotational Euler equations with damping for the initial short pulse data which was first introduced by D.Christodoulou\cite{christodoulou2007}. Due to the damping effect, the largeness of the initial data is necessary for the shock formation and we will work on the class of large data (in energy sense). Similar to the undamped case, the formation of shock is characterized by the collapse of the characteristic hypersurfaces and the vanishing of the inverse foliation density functi…
This paper concerns the existence of transonic shock solutions to the 2-D steady compressible Euler system in an almost flat finite nozzle ( in the sense that it is a generic small perturbation of a flat one ), under physical boundary conditions proposed by Courant-Friedrichs in \cite{CourantFriedrichs1948}, in which the receiver pressure is prescribed at the exit of the nozzle. In the resulting free boundary problem, the location of the shock-front is one of the most desirable information one would like to determine. However, the location of the normal shock-front in a flat nozzle can be anyw…
We consider the Riemann problem composed of two shocks for the 1D Euler system. We show that the Riemann solution with two shocks is stable and unique in the class of weak inviscid limits of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data with bounded energy. This work extends to the case of two shocks a previous result of the authors in the case of a single shock. It is based on the method of weighted relative entropy with shifts known as $a$-contraction theory. A major difficulty due to the method is that very little control is available on the shifts. A modification of the constr…
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of transonic shocks for 2-D steady isothermal Euler flows in a horizontal flat nozzle under vertical gravity. In particular, we focus on the contribution of the vertical gravity in determining the position of the shock front. For steady horizontal flows, the existence of normal shocks with the position of the shock front being arbitrary in the nozzle can be easily established. This paper will try to determine the position of the shock front as the state of the flow at the entrance of the nozzle and the pressure at the exit are slightly perturbe…
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
In this paper, the Riemann problem for the pressureless Euler equations with a discontinuous source term is considered. The delta shock wave solution is obtained by combining the generalized Rankine-Hugoniot conditions together with the method of characteristics for different situations, which reflects the impact of the source term on the delta shock front. Moreover, during the construction process of the Riemann solution, some interesting phenomena are also observed, such as the disappearance of the delta shock wave and the occurrence of the vacuum state, etc.
We establish the existence, stability, and asymptotic behavior of transonic flows with a transonic shock past a curved wedge for the steady full Euler equations in an important physical regime, which form a nonlinear system of mixed-composite hyperbolic-elliptic type. To achieve this, we first employ the coordinate transformation of Euler-Lagrange type and then exploit one of the new equations to identify a potential function in Lagrangian coordinates. By capturing the conservation properties of the Euler system, we derive a single second-order nonlinear elliptic equation for the potential fun…
A fundamental question in fluid dynamics concerns the formation of discontinuous shock waves from smooth initial data. We prove that from smooth initial data, smooth solutions to the 2d Euler equations in azimuthal symmetry form a first singularity, the so-called $C^{\frac{1}{3}} $ pre-shock. The solution in the vicinity of this pre-shock is shown to have a fractional series expansion with coefficients computed from the data. Using this precise description of the pre-shock, we prove that a discontinuous shock instantaneously develops after the pre-shock. This regular shock solution is shown to…
The behaviour of the solutions to the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler equations when the pressure vanishes is analysed. It is shown that any solution composed of a 1-shock wave and a 2-rarefaction wave tends to a two-shock wave when the pressure gets smaller than a fixed value determined by the Riemann data; by contrast, any solution composed of a 1-rarefaction wave and a 2-shock wave tends to a two-rarefaction wave. The two situations are illustrated with numerical tests.
In this paper, we study the limits of Riemann solutions to the inhomogeneous Euler equations of one-dimensional compressible fluid flow as the adiabatic exponent $γ$ tends to one. Different from the homogeneous equations, the Riemann solutions of the inhomogeneous system are non self-similar. It is rigorously shown that, as $γ$ tends to one, any two-shock Riemann solution tends to a delta shock solution of the pressureless Euler system with a source term, and the intermediate density between the two shocks tends to a weighted $δ$-mesaure which forms the delta shock; while any two-rarefaction-w…
We establish the stability of 3-D axisymmetric transonic shock solutions of the steady full Euler system in divergent nozzles under small perturbations of an incoming radial supersonic flow and a constant pressure at the exit of the nozzles. To study 3-D axisymmetric transonic shock solutions of the full Euler system, we use a stream function formulation of the full Euler system for a 3-D axisymmetric flow. We resolve the singularity issue arising in stream function formulations of the full Euler system for a 3-D axisymmetric flow. We develop a new scheme to determine a shock location of a tra…
We consider self-similar solutions to the full compressible Euler system for an ideal gas in two and three space dimensions. The system admits a 2-parameter family of similarity solutions depending on parameters $λ$ and $κ$. Requiring locally finite amounts of mass, momentum, and energy imply certain constraints on $λ$ and $κ$. Further constraints are imposed for particular types of flows. E.g., Guderley's pioneering construction of an unbounded converging shock wave invading a quiescent fluid, requires $κ=0$ and $λ>1$. In this work we analyze the regime $0<λ<1$, which does not appear to have …
We analyze the shock formation process for the 3d non-isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law, in which sounds waves interact with entropy waves to produce vorticity. Building on our theory for isentropic flows in [3,4], we give a constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial data. Specifically, we prove that there exist smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Euler equations which form a generic stable shock with explicitly computable blowup time, location, and direction. This is achieved by establishing the asymptotic stability of a generic shock profile in modulated sel…

We study the Riemann problem for the multidimensional compressible isentropic Euler equations. Using the framework developed by Chiodaroli, De Lellis, Kreml and based on the techniques of De Lellis and Székelyhidi, we extend our previous results and prove that whenever the initial Riemann data give rise to a self-similar solution consisting of one admissible shock and one rarefaction wave and are not too far from lying on a simple shock wave, the problem admits also infinitely many admissible weak solutions.
Radial similarity flow offers a rare instance where concrete inviscid, multi-dimensional, compressible flows can be studied in detail. In particular, there are flows of this type that exhibit imploding shocks and cavities. In such flows the primary flow variables (density, velocity, pressure, temperature) become unbounded at time of collapse. In both cases the solution can be propagated beyond collapse by having an expanding shock wave reflect off the center of motion. These types of flows are of relevance in bomb-making and inertial confinement fusion, and also as benchmarks for computational…
In this paper, we analyze various types of critical phenomena in one-dimensional gas flows described by Euler equations. We give a geometrical interpretation of thermodynamics with a special emphasis on phase transitions. We use ideas from the geometrical theory of PDEs, in particular, symmetries and differential constraints to find solutions to the Euler system. Solutions obtained are multivalued, have singularities of projection to the plane of independent variables. We analyze the propagation of the shock wave front along with phase transitions.
Decomposition of Three-Dimensional Steady Non-isentropic Compressible Euler System and Stability of Spherically Symmetric Subsonic Flows and Transonic Shocks under Multidimensional Perturbations
Transonic shocks play a pivotal role in designation of supersonic inlets and ramjets. For the three-dimensional steady non-isentropic compressible Euler system with frictions, we had constructed a family of transonic shock solutions in rectilinear ducts with square cross-sections, and this paper is devoted to proving rigorously that almost all of these transonic shock solutions are stable, under multidimensional small perturbations of the upcoming supersonic flows and back pressures at the exits of ducts in suitable function spaces. This manifests that friction has a stabilization effect on tr…
We consider the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations, with pressure law $p(ρ) = (\sfrac{1}γ) ρ^γ$, with $γ>1$. We provide an elementary constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial datum of finite energy, with no vacuum regions, and with {nontrivial vorticity}. We prove that for initial data which has minimum slope $- {\sfrac{1}{ \eps}}$, for $ \eps>0$ taken sufficiently small relative to the $\OO(1)$ amplitude, there exist smooth solutions to the Euler equations which form a shock in time $\OO(\eps)$. The blowup time and location can be explicitly computed and solutions at …

In this paper we study existence and stability of shock profiles for a 1-D compressible Euler system in the context of Quantum Hydrodynamic models. The dispersive term is originated by the quantum effects described through the Bohm potential; moreover we introduce a (linear) viscosity to analyze its interplay with the former while proving existence, monotonicity and stability of travelling waves connecting a Lax shock for the underlying Euler system. The existence of monotone profiles is proved for sufficiently small shocks; while the case of large shocks leads to the (global) existence for an…
The uniqueness of entropy solution for the compressible Euler equations is a fundamental and challenging problem. In this paper, the uniqueness of a composite wave of shock and rarefaction of 1-d compressible Euler equations is proved in the inviscid limit of compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the relative entropy around the original Riemann solution consisting of shock and rarefaction under the large perturbation is shown to be uniformly bounded by the framework developed in \cite{Kang-Vasseur-2021-Invent}. The proof contains two new ingredients: 1) a cut-off technique and the ex…
Given constant data of density $ρ_0$, velocity $-u_0{\bf e}_r$, pressure $p_0$ and electric force $-E_0{\bf e}_r$ for supersonic flow at the entrance, and constant pressure $p_{\rm ex}$ for subsonic flow at the exit, we prove that Euler-Poisson system admits a unique transonic shock solution in a two dimensional convergent nozzle, provided that $u_0>0$, $E_0>0$, and that $E_0$ is sufficiently large depending on $(ρ_0, u_0, p_0)$ and the length of the nozzle.
The question of well- and ill-posedness of entropy admissible solutions to the multi-dimensional systems of conservation laws has been studied recently in the case of isentropic Euler equations. In this context special initial data were considered, namely the 1D Riemann problem which is extended trivially to a second space dimension. It was shown that there exist infinitely many bounded entropy admissible weak solutions to such a 2D Riemann problem for isentropic Euler equations, if the initial data give rise to a 1D self-similar solution containing a shock. In this work we study such a 2D Rie…
We are concerned with geometric properties of transonic shocks as free boundaries in two-dimensional self-similar coordinates for compressible fluid flows, which are not only important for the understanding of geometric structure and stability of fluid motions in continuum mechanics but also fundamental in the mathematical theory of multidimensional conservation laws. A transonic shock for the Euler equations for self-similar potential flow separates elliptic (subsonic) and hyperbolic (supersonic) phases of the self-similar solution of the corresponding nonlinear partial differential equation …
We establish the equivalence of free piston and delta shock, for the one-space-dimensional pressureless compressible Euler equations. The delta shock appearing in the singular Riemann problem is exactly the piston that may move freely forward or backward in a straight tube, driven by the pressureless Euler flows on two sides of it in the tube. This result not only helps to understand the physics of the somewhat mysterious delta shocks, but also provides a way to reduce the fluid-solid interaction problem, which consists of several initial-boundary value problems coupled with moving boundaries,…
