In this work we develop a theory of Stieltjes-analytic functions. We first define the Stieltjes monomials and polynomials and we study them exhaustively. Then, we introduce the Stieltjes analytic functions locally, as an infinite series of these Stieltjes monomials and we study their properties in depth and how they relate to higher order Stieltjes differentiation. We define the exponential series and prove that it solves the first order linear problem. Finally, we apply the theory to solve higher order linear homogeneous Stieltjes differential equations with constant coefficients.
This work deals with the obtaining of solutions of first and second order Stieltjes differential equations. We define the notions of Stieltjes derivative on the whole domain of the functions involved, provide a notion of n-times continuously Stieltjes-differentiable functions and prove existence and uniqueness results of Stieltjes differential equations in those spaces. We also present the Green's functions associated to the different problems and an application to the Stieltjes harmonic oscillator.
We use lower and upper solutions to investigate the existence of the greatest and the least solutions for quasimonotone systems of measure differential equations. The established results are then used to study the solvability of Stieltjes differential equations; a recent unification of discrete, continuous and impulsive systems. The applicability of our results is illustrated in a simple model for bacteria population.
The generating function of Stieltjes-Carlitz polynomials is a solution of Heun's differential equation and using this relation Carlitz was the first to get exact closed forms for some Heun functions. Similarly the associated Stieltjes-Carlitz polynomials lead to a new differential equation which we call associated Heun. Thanks to the link with orthogonal polynomials we are able to deduce two integral relations connecting associated Heun functions with different parameters and to exhibit the set of associated Heun functions which generalize Carlitz's. Part of these results were used by the auth…
We show that a differential version of the classical Chebyshev-Markov-Stieltjes inequalities holds for a broad family of weight functions. Such a differential version appears to be new. Our results apply to weight functions which are bounded away from zero and piecewise absolutely continuous and yield effective estimates when the weight satisfies additional regularity conditions.
In this work, we define the notions of Wronskian and simplified Wronskian for Stieltjes derivatives and study some of their properties in a similar manner to the context of time scales or the usual derivative. Later, we use these tools to investigate second order linear differential equations with Stieltjes derivatives to find linearly independent solutions, as well as to derive the variation of parameters method for problems with $g$-continuous coefficients. This theory is later illustrated with some examples such as the study of the one-dimensional linear Helmholtz equation with piecewise-co…
For each of the eight $n$-th derivative parameter changing formulas for Gauss hypergeometric functions a corresponding fractional integration formula is given. For both types of formulas the differential or integral operator is intertwining between two actions of the hypergeometric differential operator (for two sets of parameters): a so-called transmutation property. This leads to eight fractional integration formulas and four generalized Stieltjes transform formulas for each of the six different explicit solutions of the hypergeometric differential equation, by letting the transforms act on …
We investigate the asymptotic zero distribution of Heine-Stieltjes polynomials - polynomial solutions of a second order differential equations with complex polynomial coefficients. In the case when all zeros of the leading coefficients are all real, zeros of the Heine-Stieltjes polynomials were interpreted by Stieltjes as discrete distributions minimizing an energy functional. In a general complex situation one deals instead with a critical point of the energy. We introduce the notion of discrete and continuous critical measures (saddle points of the weighted logarithmic energy on the plane), …
We investigate the strong asymptotics of Heine-Stieltjes polynomials - polynomial solutions of a second order differential equations with complex polynomial coefficients. The solution is given in terms of critical measures (saddle points of the weighted logarithmic energy on the plane), that are tightly related to quadratic differentials with closed trajectories on the plane. The paper is a continuation of the research initiated in [arXiv:0902.0193]. However, the starting point here is the WKB method, which allows to obtain the strong asymptotics.
Integral equations of the form $$ x(t)=x(t_0)+\int_{t_0}^t d[A]\,x=f(t)-f(t_0)$$ are natural generalizations of systems of linear differential equations. Their main goal is that they admit solutions which need not be absolutely continuous. Up to now such equations have been considered by several authors starting with J. Kurzweil and T.H. Hildebrandt. These authors worked with several different concepts of the Stieltjes type integral like Young's (Hildebrandt), Kurzweil's (Kurzweil, Schwabik and Tvrdý), Dushnik's (Hönig) or Lebesgue's (Ashordia, Meng and Zhang). Thus an interesting question ari…
In this paper we prove pointwise and distributional Fourier transform inversion theorems for functions on the real line that are locally of bounded variation, while in a neighbourhood of infinity are Lebesgue integrable or have polynomial growth. We also allow the Fourier transform to exist in the principal value sense. A function is called regulated if it has a left limit and a right limit at each point. The main inversion theorem is obtained by solving the differential equation $df(t)-iωf(t)=g(t)$ for a regulated function $f$, where $ω$ is a complex number with positive imaginary part. This …
In 1986 J. Nuttall published in Constructive Approximation the paper "Asymptotics of generalized Jacobi polynomials", where with his usual insight he studied the behavior of the denominators ("generalized Jacobi polynomials") and the remainders of the Pade approximants to a special class of algebraic functions with 3 branch points. 25 years later we try to look at this problem from a modern perspective. On one hand, the generalized Jacobi polynomials constitute an instance of the so-called Heine-Stieltjes polynomials, i.e. they are solutions of linear ODE with polynomial coefficients. On the o…
Polynomial solutions to the generalized Lamé equation, the Stieltjes polynomials, and the associated Van Vleck polynomials have been studied since the 1830's in various contexts including the solution of Laplace equations on an ellipsoid. Recently there has been renewed interest in the distribution of the zeros of Van Vleck polynomials as the degree of the corresponding Stieltjes polynomials increases. In this paper we show that the zeros of Van Vleck polynomials corresponding to Stieltjes polynomials of successive degrees interlace. We also show that the spectral polynomials formed from the V…
A general class of transcendental equations in complex domain is considered for functions belonging to the Stieltjes cone. Under certain conditions each transcendental equation has no solution or one, at most, in the complex plane cut along the negative real axis. The unique solution is real valued and positive with an analytical bound. Particular cases consist in transcendental equations containing exponential, hyperbolic, power law, logarithmic and special functions. The present approach provides a simple way to prove that some special functions have no zero in certain sectors of the complex…
Using a modified version of Schauder's fixed point theorem, measures of non-compactness and classical techniques, we provide new general results on the asymptotic behavior and the non-oscillation of second order scalar nonlinear differential equations on a half-axis. In addition, we extend the methods and present new similar results for integral equations and Volterra-Stieltjes integral equations, a framework whose benefits include the unification of second order difference and differential equations. In so doing, we enlarge the class of nonlinearities and in some cases remove the distinction …
We present new criteria for the existence of oscillatory and nonoscillatory solutions of measure delay differential equations with impulses. We deal with the integral forms of the differential equations using the Perron and the Perron-Stieltjes integrals. Thus the functions involved can have many discontinuities and be of unbounded variation and yet we obtain good results which encompass those in the literature. Examples are given to illustrate the main results.
Given a differential operator T=\sum_{i=1}^k Q_i(z)d^i/dz^i where each Q_i(z) is a polynomial define r=max_i deg(Q_i(z)-i). Assuming that r is nonnegative we consider the following multiparameter spectral problem: for each positive integer n find all polynomials V(z) of degree at most r such that the equation T(S(z))+V(z)S(z)=0 has a polynomial solution S(z) of degree n. We calculate for any converging sequence of normalized polynomials V_j(z) the root-counting measure of the corresponding sequence of polynomials S_j(z).
In this work, we are concerned with existence of solutions for a nonlinear second-order distributional differential equation, which contains measure differential equations and stochastic differential equations as special cases. The proof is based on the Leray--Schauder nonlinear alternative and Kurzweil--Henstock--Stieltjes integrals. Meanwhile, examples are worked out to demonstrate that the main results are sharp.
We consider symmetric second-order differential operators with real coefficients such that the corresponding differential equation is in the limit circle case at infinity. Our goal is to construct the theory of self-adjoint realizations of such operators by an analogy with the case of Jacobi operators. We introduce a new object, the quasiresolvent of the maximal operator, and use it to obtain a very explicit formula for the resolvents of all self-adjoint realizations. In particular, this yields a simple representation for the Cauchy-Stieltjes transforms of the spectral measures playing the rol…
In this work we establish a theory of Calculus based on the new concept of displacement. We develop all the concepts and results necessary to go from the definition to differential equations, starting with topology and measure and moving on to differentiation and integration. We find interesting notions on the way, such as the integral with respect to a path of measures or the displacement derivative. We relate both of these two concepts by a Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Finally, we develop the necessary framework in order to study displacement equations by relating them to Stieltjes diffe…
In this paper, monic polynomials orthogonal with deformation of the Freud-type weight function are considered. These polynomials fullfill linear differential equation with some polynomial coefficients in their holonomic form. The aim of this work is explore certain characterizing properties of perturbed Freud type polynomials such as nonlinear recursion relations, finite moments, differential-recurrence and differential relations satisfied by the recurrence coefficients as well as the corresponding semiclassical orthogonal polynomials. We note that the obtained differential equation fulfilled …
Formally symmetric differential operators on weighted Hardy-Hilbert spaces are analyzed, along with adjoint pairs of differential operators. Eigenvalue problems for such operators are rather special, but include many of the classical Riemann and Heun equations. Symmetric minimal operators are characterized. A regular class whose leading coefficients have no zeros on the unit circle are shown to be essentially self-adjoint. Eigenvalue asymptotics are established. Some extensions to non-self-adjoint operators are also considered.
Ordinary differential operators with periodic coefficients analytic in a strip act on a Hardy-Hilbert space of analytic functions with inner product defined by integration over a period on the boundary of the strip. Simple examples show that eigenfunctions may form a complete set for a narrow strip, but completeness may be lost for a wide strip. Completeness of the eigenfunctions in the Hardy-Hilbert space is established for regular second order operators with matrix-valued coefficients when the leading coefficient satisfies a positive real part condition throughout the strip.
There is no unified method to solve the fractional differential equation. The type of derivative here used in this paper is of Jumarie formulation, for the several differential equations studied. Here we develop an algorithm to solve the linear fractional differential equation composed via Jumarie fractional derivative in terms of Mittag-Leffler function; and show its conjugation with ordinary calculus. In these fractional differential equations the one parameter Mittag-Leffler function plays the role similar as exponential function used in ordinary differential equations.
For an analytic differential system in $\mathbb R^n$ with a periodic orbit, we will prove that if the system is analytically integrable around the periodic orbit, i.e. it has $n-1$ functionally independent analytic first integrals defined in a neighborhood of the periodic orbit, then the system is analytically equivalent to its Poincaré--Dulac type normal form. This result is an extension for analytic integrable differential systems around a singularity to the ones around a periodic orbit.
Poincaré proved nonexistence of formal first integrals near a nonresonant singularity of analytic autonomous differential systems. In the resonant case with one zero eigenvalue and others nonresonant, there remains an open problem on regularity and convergence of local first integrals. Here we provide an answer to this problem. The system has always a local $C^\infty$ first integral near the singularity when it is nonisolated. In any finite dimensional space formed by analytic differential systems having the same linear part at the singularity, either all the systems have local analytic first …
This paper is dedicated to the differential Galois theory in the complex analytic context for Lie-Vessiot systems. Those are the natural generaliza- tion of linear systems, and the more general class of differential equations adimitting superposition laws, as recently stated in [5]. A Lie-Vessiot sys- tem is automatically translated into a equation in a Lie group that we call automorphic system. Reciprocally an automorphic system induces a hierarchy of Lie-Vessiot systems. In this work we study the global analytic aspects of a classical method of reduction of differential equations, due to S. …
We give a complete classification of analytic equivalence of germs of parametric families of systems of complex linear differential equations unfolding a generic resonant singularity of Poincare rank 1 in dimension $n = 2$ whose leading matrix is a Jordan bloc. The moduli space of analytic equivalence classes is described in terms of a tuple of formal invariants and a single analytic invariant obtained from the trace of monodromy, and analytic normal forms are given. We also explain the underlying phenomena of confluence of two simple singularities and of a turning point, the associated Stokes…
We report a new analytical method for exact solution of homogeneous linear ordinary differential equations with arbitrary order and variable coefficients. The method is based on the definition of jump transfer matrices and their extension into limiting differential form. The approach reduces the $n$th-order differential equation to a system of $n$ linear differential equations with unity order. The full analytical solution is then found by the perturbation technique. The important feature of the presented method is that it deals with the evolution of independent solutions, rather than its deri…
This paper shows how to build a formal analytical solution for a differential equation of arbitrary order and with variable coefficients. It proofs that the most known approximated solutions for such a problem can be derived from the analytical expression presented in the paper. The formalism can be easily extended to the infinite dimensional case such as the quantum time-dependent Hamiltonian problem.
Treating a boundary value problem in analytical fluid dynamics, translation of 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations to ordinary differential form leads to a second order equation of Riccati type. In the case of a compressible fluid with constant kinematic viscosity along streamlines, it is possible to find an exact solution of the differential problem by rational combination of Airy's functions and their derivatives.
