In this paper we develop a new groupoid-based structure theory for the class of regular $*$-semigroups. This class occupies something of a `sweet spot' between the important classes of inverse and regular semigroups, and contains many natural examples. Some of the most significant families include the partition, Brauer and Temperley-Lieb monoids, among other diagram monoids.
Our main result is that the category of regular $*$-semigroups is isomorphic to the category of so-called `chained projection groupoids'. Such a groupoid is in fact a triple $(P,\mathcal G,\varepsilon)$, where:
$\bullet$ $P$ is a projection algebra (in the sense of Imaoka and Jones),
$\bullet$ $\mathcal G$ is an ordered groupoid with object set $P$, and
$\bullet$ $\varepsilon:\mathscr C\to\mathcal G$ is a special functor, where $\mathscr C$ is a certain natural `chain groupoid' constructed from $P$.
Roughly speaking: the groupoid $\mathcal G=\mathcal G(S)$ remembers only the `easy' products in a regular $*$-semigroup $S$; the projection algebra $P=P(S)$ remembers only the `conjugation action' of the projections of $S$; and the functor $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(S)$ tells us how $\mathcal G$ and $P$ `fit together' in order to recover the entire structure of $S$. In this way, we obtain the first completely general structure theorem for regular $*$-semigroups.
As a consequence of our main result, we give a new proof of the celebrated Ehresmann--Schein--Nambooripad Theorem, which establishes an isomorphism between the categories of inverse semigroups and inductive groupoids. Other applications will be given in future works.
We consider several examples along the way, and pose a number of problems that we believe are worthy of further attention.
We examine a semigroup analogue of the Kumjian-Renault representation of C*-algebras with Cartan subalgebras on twisted groupoids. Specifically, we show how to represent semigroups with distinguished normal subsemigroups as `slice-sections' of groupoid bundles.
The complex algebra of an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class is stably finite by a result of Munn. This can be proved fairly easily using $C^*$-algebras for inverse semigroups satisfying this condition that have a Hausdorff universal groupoid, or more generally for direct limits of inverse semigroups satisfying this condition and having Hausdorff universal groupoids. It is not difficult to see that a finitely presented inverse semigroup with a non-Hausdorff universal groupoid cannot be a direct limit of inverse semigroups with Hausdorff universal groupo…
This paper studies simplicity, primitivity and semiprimitivity of algebras associated to étale groupoids. Applications to inverse semigroup algebras are presented. The results also recover the semiprimitivity of Leavitt path algebras and can be used to recover the known primitivity criterion for Leavitt path algebras.
We unify various étale groupoid reconstruction theorems such as: 1) Kumjian-Renault's reconstruction from a groupoid C*-algebra. 2) Exel's reconstruction from an ample inverse semigroup. 3) Steinberg's reconstruction from a groupoid ring. 4) Choi-Gardella-Thiel's reconstruction from a groupoid L^p-algebra. We do this by working with certain bumpy semigroups S of functions defined on an étale groupoid G. The semigroup structure of S together with the diagonal subsemigroup D then yields a natural domination relation < on S. The groupoid of <-ultrafilters is then isomorphic to the original groupo…
We investigate various groupoids associated to an arbitrary inverse semigroup with zero. We show that the groupoid of filters with respect to the natural partial order is isomorphic to the groupoid of germs arising from the standard action of the inverse semigroup on the space of idempotent filters. We also investigate the restriction of this isomorphism to the groupoid of tight filters and to the groupoid of ultrafilters.
Given an adaptable separated graph, we construct an associated groupoid and explore its type semigroup. Specifically, we first attach to each adaptable separated graph a corresponding semigroup, which we prove is an $E^*$-unitary inverse semigroup. As a consequence, the tight groupoid of this semigroup is a Hausdorff étale groupoid. We show that this groupoid is always amenable, and that the type semigroups of groupoids obtained from adaptable separated graphs in this way include all finitely generated conical refinement monoids. The first three named authors will utilize this construction in …
We fix a path model for the space of filters of the inverse semigroup $\mathcal{S}_Λ$ associated to a left cancellative small category $Λ$. Then, we compute its tight groupoid, thus giving a representation of its $C^*$-algebra as a (full) groupoid algebra. Using it, we characterize when these algebras are simple. Also, we determine amenability of the tight groupoid under mild, reasonable hypotheses.
It is well known that inverse semigroups are closely related to étale groupoids. In particular, it has recently been shown that there is a (non-functorial) equivalence between localic étale groupoids, on one hand, and complete and infinitely distributive inverse semigroups (abstract complete pseudogroups), on the other. This correspondence is mediated by a class of quantales, known as inverse quantal frames, that are obtained from the inverse semigroups by a simple join completion that yields an equivalence of categories. Hence, we can regard abstract complete pseudogroups as being essentially…
In this paper we give some sufficient and some necessary conditions for an étale groupoid algebra to be a prime ring. As an application we recover the known primeness results for inverse semigroup algebras and Leavitt path algebras. It turns out that primeness of the algebra is connected with the dynamical property of topological transitivity of the groupoid. We obtain analogous results for semiprimeness.
The concept of a k-translatable groupoid is explored in depth. Some properties of idempotent k-translatable groupoids, left cancellative k-translatable groupoids and left unitary k-translatable groupoids are proved. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for a left cancellative k-translatable groupoid to be a semigroup. Any such semigroup is proved to be left unitary and a union of disjoint copies of cyclic groups of the same order. Methods of constructing k-translatable semigroups that are not left cancellative are given.
The paper deals with $Σ-$composition and $Σ$-essential composition of terms, which lead to stable and s-stable varieties of algebras. A full description of all stable varieties of semigroups, commutative and idempotent groupoids is obtained. We use an abstract reduction system which simplifies the presentations of terms of type $τ=(2)$ to study the varietiy of idempotent groupoids and s-stable varieties of groupoids. They are used as an alternating of the stable varieties, aiming to highlight replacing the subterms of a term in a deductive systems instead of the usual replacing the variables w…
Let $(X,\bullet )$ be a groupoid (binary algebra) and $Bin(X\dot{)}$ denote the collection of all groupoids defined on $X$. We introduce two methods of factorization for this binary system under the binary groupoid product \textquotedblleft $\diamond $\textquotedblright\ in the semigroup $\left( Bin\left( X\right) ,\diamond \right) $. We conclude that a strong non-idempotent groupoid can be represented as a product of its \textit{% similar-} and \textit{signature-} derived factors. Moreover, we show that a groupoid with the orientation property is a product of its \textit{orient-} and \textit{…
Given an action $φ$ of of inverse semigroup $S$ on a ring $A$ (with domain of $φ(s)$ denoted by $D_{s^*}$) we show that if the ideals $D_e$, with $e$ an idempotent, are unital, then the skew inverse semigroup ring $A\rtimes S$ can be realized as the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of rings. Conversely, we show that the convolution algebra of an ample groupoid with coefficients in a sheaf of rings is isomorphic to a skew inverse semigroup ring of this sort. We recover known results in the literature for Steinberg algebras over a field as special cases.
In this paper, we prove that the algebra of an étale groupoid with totally disconnected unit space has a simple algebra over a field if and only if the groupoid is minimal and effective and the only function of the algebra that vanishes on every open subset is the null function. Previous work on the subject required the groupoid to be also topologically principal in the non-Hausdorff case, but we do not. Furthermore, we provide the first examples of minimal and effective but not topologically principal étale groupoids with totally disconnected unit spaces. Our examples come from self-similar g…
The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $R$ and étale groupoid $\mathscr G$ with locally compact, Hausdorff and totally disconnected unit space an $R$-algebra $R\mathscr G$. In this paper we characterize when $R\mathscr G$ is Noetherian and when it is Artinian. As corollaries, we extend the characterization of Abrams, Aranda~Pino and Siles~Molina of finite dimensional and of Noetherian Leavitt path algebras over a field to arbitrary commutative coefficient rings and we recover the characterization of Okniński of Noetherian inverse semigroup algebras and of Zelma…
First we give a definition of a coverage on a inverse semigroup that is weaker than the one gave by a Lawson and Lenz and that generalizes the definition of a coverage on a semilattice given by Johnstone. Given such a coverage, we prove that there exists a pseudogroup that is universal in the sense that it transforms cover-to-join idempotent-pure maps into idempotent-pure pseudogroup homomorphisms. Then, we show how to go from a nucleus on a pseudogroup to a topological groupoid embedding of the corresponding groupoids. Finally, we apply the results found to study Exel's notions of tight filte…
Twisted étale groupoid algebras have been studied recently in the algebraic setting by several authors in connection with an abstract theory of Cartan pairs of rings. In this paper, we show that extensions of ample groupoids correspond in a precise manner to extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups. In particular, discrete twists over ample groupoids correspond to certain abelian extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups and we show that they are classified by Lausch's second cohomology group of an inverse semigroup. The cohomology group structure corresponds to the Baer sum operation on twists…
A Galois correspondence theorem is proved for the case of inverse semigroups acting orthogonally on commutative rings as a consequence of the Galois correspondence theorem for groupoid actions. To this end, we use a classic result of inverse semigroup theory that establishes a one-to-one correspondence between inverse semigroups and inductive groupoids.
Given an inverse semigroup $S$ endowed with a partial action on a topological space $X$, we construct a groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ in a manner similar to Exel's groupoid of germs, and similarly a partial action of $S$ on an algebra $A$ induces a crossed product $A\rtimes S$. We then prove, in the setting of partial actions, that if $X$ is locally compact Hausdorff and zero-dimensional, then the Steinberg algebra of the groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ is isomorphic to the crossed product $A_R(X)\rtimes S$, where $A_R(X)$ is the Steinberg algebra of $X$. We also prove that the converse holds,…
In the work we investigate some groupoids which are the Abelian algebras and the Hamiltonian algebras. An algebra is Abelian if for every polynomial operation and for all elements $a,b,\bar c,\bar d$ the implication $t(a,\bar c)=t(a,\bar d)\rightarrow t(b,\bar c)=t(b,\bar d)$ holds; an algebra is Hamiltonian if every subalgebra is a block of some congruence on the algebra. R.V. Warne in 1994 described the structure of the Abelian semigroups. In this work we describe the Abelian groupoids with identity, the Abelian finite quasigroups and the Abelian semigroups $S$ such that $abS=aS$ and $Sba=Sa…

Motivated by some alternatives to the classical logical model of boolean algebra, this paper deals with algebraic structures which extend skew lattices by locally invertible elements. Following the meme of the Ehresmann-Schein-Nambooripad theorem, we consider a groupoid (small category of isomorphisms) in which the set of objects carries the structure of a skew lattice. The objects act on the morphisms by left and right restriction and extension mappings of the morphisms, imitating those of an inductive groupoid. Conditions are placed on the actions, from which pseudoproducts may be defined. T…
In this paper we introduce the notion of the center $ZBin(X)$ in the semigroup $Bin(X)$ of all binary systems on a set $X$, and show that if $(X,\bullet)\in ZBin(X)$, then $x\not=y$ implies $\{x,y\}=\{x\bullet y,y\bullet x\}$.Moreover, we show that a groupoid $(X,\bullet )\in ZBin(X)$ if and only if it is a locally-zero groupoid.
By a completely inverse $AG^{**}$-groupoid we mean an inverse $AG^{**}$-groupoid $A$ satisfying the identity $xx^{-1}=x^{-1}x$, where $x^{-1}$ denotes a unique element of $A$ such that $x=(xx^{-1})x$ and $x^{-1}=(x^{-1}x)x^{-1}.$ We show that the set of all idempotents of such groupoid forms a semilattice and the Green's relations $\mathcal{H,L, R,D}$ and $\mathcal{J}$ coincide on $A$. The main result of this note says that any completely inverse $AG^{**}$-groupoid meets the famous Lallement's Lemma for regular semigroups. Finally, we show that the Green's relation $\mathcal{H}$ is both the le…
Let $S$ be a partial groupoid, that is, a set with a partial binary operation. An $S$-graded ring $R$ is said to be graded von Neumann regular if $x\in xRx$ for every homogeneous element $x\in R.$ Under the assumption that $S$ is cancellative, we characterize $S$-graded rings which are graded von Neumann regular. If a ring is $S$-graded von Neumann regular, and if $S$ is cancellative, then $S$ is such that for every $s\in S,$ there exist $s^{-1}\in S$ and idempotent elements $e,$ $f\in S$ for which $es=sf=s,$ $fs^{-1}=s^{-1}e=s^{-1},$ $ss^{-1}=e$ and $s^{-1}s=f,$ which is a property enjoyed by…
Inspired by results for graph $C^*$-algebras, we investigate connections between the ideal structure of an inverse semigroup $S$ and that of its tight $C^*$-algebra by relating ideals in $S$ to certain open invariant sets in the associated tight groupoid. We also develop analogues of Conditions (L) and (K) for inverse semigroups, which are related to certain congruences on $S$. We finish with applications to the inverse semigroups of self-similar graph actions and some relevant comments on the authors' earlier uniqueness theorems for inverse semigroups.
We study C*-algebras associated to right LCM semigroups, that is, semigroups which are left cancellative and for which any two principal right ideals are either disjoint or intersect in another principal right ideal. If $P$ is such a semigroup, its C*-algebra admits a natural boundary quotient $\mathcal{Q}(P)$. We show that $\mathcal{Q}(P)$ is isomorphic to the tight C*-algebra of a certain inverse semigroup associated to $P$, and thus is isomorphic to the C*-algebra of an étale groupoid. We use this to give conditions on $P$ which guarantee that $\mathcal{Q}(P)$ is simple and purely infinite,…
