This paper provides a canonical compactification of the plane ${\mathbb R}^2$ by adding a circle at infinity associated to a countable family of singular foliations or laminations (under some hypotheses), generalizing an idea by Mather \cite{Ma}. Moreover any homeomorphism of ${\mathbb R}^2 $ preserving the foliations extends on the circle at infinity.
Then this paper provides conditions ensuring the minimality of the action on the circle at infinity induced by an action on ${\mathbb R}^2 $ preserving one foliation or two transverse foliations.
In particular the action on the circle at infinity associated to an Anosov flow $X$ on a closed $3$-manifold is minimal if and only if $X$ is non-$\mathbb R$-covered.
We show that a smooth 1-parameter family of foliations by circles of a closed 3-manifold, deforming the foliation whose leaves are the fibers of a circle bundle, is trivial, i.e. all the foliations of the family arise from circle bundles isomorphic to the unperturbed one, if a continuity property of the Seifert leaves of the perturbation holds true. This rigidity property is true for any real analytic 1-parameter family of foliations by circles when the base space of the circle bundle defining the unperturbed foliation is not a torus. The dimensionality hypothesis is discussed in relation to a…
In 1976 D. Sullivan gave an example of a flow on a compact manifold such that each one of its orbits is a circle and with the surprising property that there is no finite upper bound for their length. The aim of this article is to show that these type of examples do not appear as normally hyperbolic foliations. Namely, we prove that if a circle foliation is the center foliation of a (dynamically coherent) partially hyperbolic diffeormophism, then there is a finite upper bound for the length of the leaves. We also give short proofs of some dynamical consequences in the converse case: if the cent…
Given a uniform foliation by Gromov hyperbolic leaves on a $3$-manifold, we show that the action of the fundamental group on the universal circle is minimal and transitive on pairs of different points. We also prove two other results: we prove that general uniform Reebless foliations are $\mathbb{R}$-covered and we give a new description of the universal circle of $\mathbb{R}$-covered foliations with Gromov hyperbolic leaves in terms of the JSJ decomposition of $M$.
This paper investigates certain foliations of three-manifolds that are hybrids of fibrations over the circle with foliated circle bundles over surfaces: a 3-manifold slithers around the circle when its universal cover fibers over the circle so that deck transformations are bundle automorphisms. Examples include hyperbolic 3-manifolds of every possible homological type. We show that all such foliations admit transverse pseudo-Anosov flows, and that in the universal cover of the hyperbolic cases, the leaves limit to sphere-filling Peano curves. The skew R-covered Anosov foliations of Sergio Fenl…
Let (M, F) be a compact codimension-one foliated manifold whose leaves are equipped with Riemannian metrics, and consider continuous functions on M that are harmonic along the leaves of F . If every such function is constant on leaves we say that (M, F) has the Liouville property. Our main result is that codimension-one foliated bundles over compact negatively curved manifolds satisfy the Liouville property. Related results for R-covered foliations, as well as for discrete group actions and discrete harmonic functions, are also established.
We study a class of scalar differential equations on the circle $S^1$. This class is characterized mainly by the property that any solution of such an equation possesses exponential dichotomy both on the semi-axes $\R_+$ and $\R_+$. Also we impose some other assumptions on the structure of the foliation into integral curves for such the equation. Differential equations of this class are called gradient-like ones. As a result, we describe the global behavior of the foliation, introduce a complete invariant of uniform equivalency, give standard models for the equations of the distinguished class…
We consider smooth partially hyperbolic volume preserving Z^k actions on smooth manifolds, with uniformly compact center foliation. We show that under certain irreducibility condition on the action, bunching and uniform quasiconformality conditions, the action is a smooth fiber bundle extension of an Anosov action, or the center foliation is pathological. We obtain several corollaries of this result. For example, we prove a global dichotomy result that any smooth conservative circle extension over a maximal Cartan action is either essentially a product of an action by rotations and a linear An…
We present and implement an algorithm for computing the invariant circle and the corresponding stable manifolds for 2-dimensional maps. The algorithm is based on the parameterization method, and it is backed up by an a-posteriori theorem established in [YdlL21]. The algorithm works irrespective of whether the internal dynamics in the invariant circle is a rotation or it is phase-locked. The algorithm converges quadratically and the number of operations and memory requirements for each step of the iteration is linear with respect to the size of the discretization. We also report on the result o…
In this work it will be analyzed $η$-principal cycles (compact leaves) of one dimensional singular foliations associated to a plane field $Δ_η$ defined by a unit and normal vector field $η$ in $ \mathbb E^3$. The leaves are orthogonal to the orbits of $η$ and are the integral curves corresponding to directions of extreme normal curvature of the plane field $Δ_η$. % It is shown that, generically, given a $η$-principal cycle it can be make hyperbolic (the derivative of the first return of the Poincaré map has all eigenvalues disjoint from the unit circle) by a small deformation of the vector fie…
We consider a class of foliations on the complex projective plane that are determined by a quadratic vector field in a fixed affine neighborhood. Such foliations, as a rule, have an invariant line at infinity. Two foliations with singularities on $\mathbb C P^2$ are topologically equivalent provided that there exists a homeomorphism of the projective plane onto itself that preserves orientation both on the leaves and in $\mathbb C P^2$ and brings the leaves of the first foliation to that of the second one. We prove that a generic foliation of this class may be topologically equivalent to but a…
This work is devoted to the study of minimal, smooth actions of finitely generated groups on the circle. We provide a sufficient condition for such an action to be ergodic (with respect to the Lebesgue measure), and we illustrate this condition by studying two relevant examples. Under an analogous hypothesis, we also deal with the problem of the zero Lebesgue measure for exceptional minimal sets. This hypothesis leads to many other interesting conclusions, mainly concerning the stationary and conformal measures. Moreover, several questions are left open. The methods work as well for codimensio…
In this work we consider holomorphic foliations of degree two on the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$ having an invariant line. In a suitable choice of affine coordinates these foliations are induced by a quadratic vector field over the affine part in such a way that the invariant line corresponds to the line at infinity. We say that two such foliations are topologically equivalent provided there exists a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{P}^2$ which brings the leaves of one foliation onto the leaves of the other and preserves orientation both on the ambient space and on the leaves. The main result of …
We study analytic deformations and unfoldings of holomorphic foliations in complex projective plane $\mathbb{C}P(2)$. Let $\{\mathcal{F}_t\}_{t \in \mathbb{D}_ε}$ be topological trivial (in $\mathbb{C}^2$) analytic deformation of a foliation $\mathcal{F}_0$ on $\mathbb{C}^2$. We show that under some dynamical restriction on $\mathcal{F}_0$, we have two possibilities: $\mathcal{F}_0$ is a Darboux (logarithmic) foliation, or $\{\mathcal{F}_t\}_{t \in \mathbb{D}_ε}$ is an unfolding. We obtain in this way a link between the analytical classification of the unfolding and the one of its germs at the…
We investigate contrasting behaviours emerging when studying foliations on non-metrisable manifolds. It is shown that Kneser's pathology of a manifold foliated by a single leaf cannot occur with foliations of dimension-one. On the other hand, there are open surfaces admitting no foliations. This is derived from a qualitative study of foliations defined on the long tube $\mathbb S^1\times {\mathbb L}_+$ (product of the circle with the long ray), which is reminiscent of a `black hole', in as much as the leaves of such a foliation are strongly inclined to fall into the hole in a purely vertical w…
We show that up to automorphisms of $\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb C}$ there are $14$ homogeneous convex foliations of degree $5$ on $\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb C}.$ We establish some properties of the Fermat foliation $\mathcal F_{0}^{d}$ of degree $d\geq2$ and of the Hilbert modular foliation $\mathcal{F}_H^{5}$ of degree $5.$ As a consequence, we obtain that every reduced convex foliation of degree $5$ on $\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb C}$ is linearly conjugated to one of the two foliations $\mathcal F_{0}^{5}$ or $\mathcal{F}_H^{5},$ which is a partial answer to a question posed in $2013$ by D. Mar\'ın and J.V. P…
This article takes the inspiration from two milestones in the study of non minimal actions of groups on the circle: Duminy's theorem about the number of ends of semi-exceptional leaves and Ghys' freeness result in analytic regularity. Our first result concerns groups of analytic diffeomorphisms with infinitely many ends: if the action is non expanding, then the group is virtually free. The second result is a Duminy's theorem for minimal codimension one foliations: either non expandable leaves have infinitely many ends, or the holonomy pseudogroup preserves a projective structure.
We consider a finite composition of generalized Hénon mappings $\mathfrak{f}:\mathbb{C}^2\to\mathbb{C}^2$ and its Green function $\mathfrak{g}^+:\mathbb{C}^2\to\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}$ (see Section 2). It is well known that each level set $\{\mathfrak{g}^+=c\}$ for $c>0$ is foliated by biholomorphic images of $\mathbb{C}$ and each leaf is dense. In this paper, we prove that each leaf is actually an injective Brody curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$ (see Section 4). Namely, for any injective holomorphic parametrization of any leaf, its derivative is bounded over $\mathbb{C}$ with respect to the Fubini-Study me…
