The wealth of complex polar topologies recently found in nanoscale ferroelectrics result from a delicate balance between the materials intrinsic tendency to develop a homogeneous polarization and the electric and mechanic boundary conditions imposed upon them. Ferroelectric dielectric interfaces are model systems where polarization curling originates from open circuit like electric boundary conditions, to avoid the build-up of polarization charges through the formation of flux closure domains that evolve into vortex like structures at the nanoscale. Interestingly, while ferroelectricity is known to couple strongly to strain (both homogeneous and inhomogeneous), the effect of mechanical constraints on thin film nanoscale ferroelectrics has been comparatively less explored because of the relative paucity of strain patterns that can be implemented experimentally. Here we show that the stacking of freestanding ferroelectric perovskite layers with controlled twist angles opens an unprecedented opportunity to tailor these topological nanostructures in a way determined by the lateral strain modulation associated to the twisting. Interestingly, we find that a peculiar pattern of polarization vortices and antivortices emerges from the flexoelectric coupling of polarization to strain gradients. This finding opens exciting opportunities to create two-dimensional high density vortex crystals that would allow us to explore novel physical effects and functionalities.
SnTe hosts ferroelectricity that competes with its weak non-trivial band topology: in the high-symmetry rocksalt structure--in which its intrinsic electric dipole is quenched--this material develops metallic surface bands, but in its rhombic ground-state configuration--that hosts a non-zero spontaneous electric dipole--the crystalline symmetry is lowered and the presence of surface electronic bands is not guaranteed. Here, the type of ferroelectric coupling and the atomistic and electronic structure of SnTe films ranging from 2 to 40 ALs are examined on freestanding samples, to which atomic la…
We report the optoelectrical characterisation of Eshelby twisted Germanium sulfide (GeS) nanowires with first experimental observation of ferroelectric order at room temperature in GeS which is an otherwise centrosymmetric molecule. The chemical composition and structure of these nanowires were confirmed by various spectroscopic, microscopic and diffractive techniques. In addition, the nanowires were found to be stable over time. From the optoelectronic measurements we found that these p-type semiconducting GeS nanowires have up to two orders higher charge carrier mobility than GeS nanosheets …

Abstract: We report on emergence of an abnormal electronic polarization in twisted double bilayer WSe2 in antiparallel interface stacking geometry, where local centrosymmetry of atomic registries at the twist interface does not favor the spontaneous electronic polarizations as recently observed in the parallel interface stacking geometry. The unconventional ferroelectric behaviors probed by electronic transport measurement occur at half filling insulating states at 1.5 K and gradually disappear at about 40 K. Single band Hubbard model based on the triangular moiré lattice and the interlayer ch…

Twisted heterostructures of two-dimensional crystals offer almost unlimited scope for the design of novel metamaterials. Here we demonstrate a room-temperature ferroelectric semiconductor that is assembled using mono- or few- layer MoS2. These van der Waals heterostructures feature broken inversion symmetry, which, together with the asymmetry of atomic arrangement at the interface of two 2D crystals, enables ferroelectric domains with alternating out-of-plane polarisation arranged into a twist-controlled network. The latter can be moved by applying out-of-plane electrical fields, as visualized…
Lattice reconstruction in twisted transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers gives rise to piezo- and ferroelectric moiré potentials for electrons and holes, as well as a modulation of the hybridisation across the bilayer. Here, we develop hybrid $\mathbf{k}\cdot \mathbf{p}$ tight-binding models to describe electrons and holes in the relevant valleys of twisted TMD homobilayers with parallel (P) and anti-parallel (AP) orientations of the monolayer unit cells. We apply these models to describe moiré superlattice effects in twisted WSe${}_2$ bilayers, in conjunction with microscopic \emph{ab…

The recently observed unconventional ferroelectricity in AB bilayer graphene sandwiched by hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) presents a new platform to manipulate correlated phases in multilayered van der Waals heterostructures. We present a low-energy continuum model for AB bilayer graphene encapsulated by the top and bottom layers of either hBN or graphene, with two independent twist angles. For the graphene/hBN heterostructures, we show that twist angle asymmetry leads to a layer polarization of the valence and conduction bands. We also show that an out-of-plane displacement field not only tune…
Composite multiferroics, heterostructures of ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric (FE) materials, are characterized by a remarkable magnetoelectric effect at the interface. Previous work has supported the ferromagnetic structure with magnetic spins and the ferroelectric with pseudospins which act as electric dipoles in a microscopic model, coupled with a magnetoelectric interaction [J. Appl. Phys. 118, 124109 (2015)]. In this work, by solving the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, the electric-field-induced magnetization switching in a twisted boundary condition has been studied, and…

Artificially twisted heterostructures of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer unprecedented control over their electronic and optical properties via the spatial modulation of interlayer interactions and structural reconstruction. Here we study twisted MoS2 bilayers in a wide range of twist angles near 0° using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy. We investigate the twist angle-dependence of the moiré pattern which is dominated by lattice reconstruction for small angles (<2°) leading to large triangular domains with rhombohedral stacking. Local spectroscopy measur…
Twistronic assembly of 2D materials employs the twist angle between adjacent layers as a tuning parameter for designing the electronic and optical properties of van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we study how interlayer hybridization, weak ferroelectric charge transfer between layers, and piezoelectric response to deformations set the valence and conduction band edges across the moir{é} supercell in twistronic homobilayers of MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We show that, due to the lack of inversion symmetry in the monolayer crystals, bilayers with parallel (P) and anti-parallel (AP)…
