The simple electrostatic picture of a trion is that of an excess charge inducing an exciton polarization and binding closer (farther) to the hole (electron) side of it. Trion formation can be forbidden when such spontaneous rearrangement of charges is not allowed by the application of external perturbation, such as electric field. Here we test this hypothesis experimentally using a non-monotonic electric field. We realize this scenario by imprinting the ferroelectric domains at the AA-stacked twisted-hBN (t-hBN) interface onto a monolayer of MoS2 placed over it. The spatially varying in-plane electric field around the domain wall serves the dual purpose of (a) confining and polarizing the 2D exciton in the domain wall, and (b) depleting the free charge carriers from the domain wall. We observe a large quantized exciton splitting confirming strong exciton confinement in the domain wall. Forced by the confining potential, the electron side of the polarized exciton lies closer to the domain with accumulated free electrons, which should ideally prevent any trion formation. Contrary to the laid hypothesis, we observe signatures of quantized charged exciton emission, with an inter-level splitting that mimics the level-splitting of the quantized excitons. This paradox is explained using the many-body picture of exciton polaron, where a conduction band hole attractively binds the polarized exciton and the electron Fermi sea. The results provide a definitive way to unambiguously discern exciton polaron from trion.
We present magneto-photoluminescence measurements in a hybrid 2D semiconductor/ferromagnetic structure consisting of MoSe2/hBN/Ni. When the Nickel layer is magnetized, we observe circularly polarized photoluminescence of the trion peak in MoSe2 monolayer under linearly polarized excitation. This build-up of circular polarization can reach a measured value of about 4% when the magnetization of Ni is saturated perpendicularly to the sample plane, and changes its sign when the magnetization is reversed. The circular polarization decreases when the hBN barrier thickness increases. These results ar…
The strong light-matter interaction in transition Metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers (MLs) is governed by robust excitons. Important progress has been made to control the dielectric environment surrounding the MLs, especially through hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation, which drastically reduces the inhomogeneous contribution to the exciton linewidth. Most studies use exfoliated hBN from high quality flakes grown under high pressure. In this work, we show that hBN grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) over a large surface area substrate has a similarly positive impact on the optic…
Atomically thin materials are exceedingly susceptible to their dielectric environment. For transition metal dichalcogenides, sample placement on a substrate or encapsulation in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are frequently used. In this paper we show that the dielectric response due to optical phonons of adjacent materials influences excitons in 2d crystals. We provide an analytic model for the coupling of 2d charge carriers to optical substrate phonons, which causes polaron effects similar to that of intrinsic 2d phonons. We apply the model to hBN-encapsulated WSe2, finding a significant reduc…
Excitons, quasi particles composed of an electron and a hole, play an important role in optical responses in low-dimensional nanostructures. In this work, we have investigated exciton diffusion in a monolayer MoSe2 encapsulated between flakes of hexagonal boron nitrides (hBN/MoSe2/hBN). Through PL imaging and numerical solving the 2D diffusion equation, we revealed that temperature dependence of exciton mobility in the hBN/MoSe2/hBN shows non-saturating increase at low temperature, which is qualitatively different from those of quantum wells composed of compound semiconductors. Ultraflat struc…

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides(2D) and zero dimensional quantum dots(QD) are known to have unique optical properties in their individual limit such as high binding energy of excitons. The combination of these two systems is of particular interest in understanding various aspects of energy transfer, charge transfer, dynamics of excitons, etc. In this manuscript, we report the anomalous photoluminescence(PL) emission in one such heterostructure MoS2-CdSe QD. We observe multiple exciton emission peaks of the heterostructure on hBN substrate which are absent on SiO2. Our observation op…
Calculating the quasiparticle (QP) band structure of two-dimensional (2D) materials within the GW self-energy approximation has proven to be a rather demanding computational task. The main reason is the strong $\mathbf{q}$-dependence of the 2D dielectric function around $\mathbf{q} = \mathbf{0}$ that calls for a much denser sampling of the Brillouin zone than is necessary for similar 3D solids. Here we use an analytical expression for the small $\mathbf{q}$-limit of the 2D response function to perform the BZ integral over the critical region around $\mathbf{q} = \mathbf{0}$. This drastically r…
Ultrafast charge transfer processes provide a facile way to create interlayer excitons in directly contacted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers. More sophisticated heterostructures composed of TMD/hBN/TMD enable new ways to control interlayer exciton properties and achieve novel exciton phenomena, such as exciton insulators and condensates, where longer lifetimes are desired. In this work, we experimentally study the charge transfer dynamics in a heterostructure composed of a 1 nm thick hBN spacer between MoSe$_{2}$ and WSe$_{2}$ monolayers. We observe the hole transfer from MoSe$_{2…
Combined diverse two-dimensional (2D) materials for semiconductor interfaces are attractive for electrically controllable carrier confinement to enable excellent electrostatic control. We investigated the transport characteristic in heterointerface of multilayer molybdenum disulfide and hexagonal boron nitride (MoS$_2$/h-BN) to reveal that the charge transfer switching (CTS) is highly dependent on both the local gate constriction and bias in the channel. Notably, the CTS is shown to be controlled at a molecular level through electrotunable gated constriction. The resulting significant change i…
We present a device scheme to explore mesoscopic transport through molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) constrictions using photodoping. The devices are based on van-der-Waals heterostructures where few-layer MoS$_2$ flakes are partially encapsulated by hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and covered by a few-layer graphene flake to fabricate electrical contacts. Since the as-fabricated devices are insulating at low temperatures, we use photo-induced remote doping in the hBN substrate to create free charge carriers in the MoS$_2$ layer. On top of the device, we place additional metal structures, which def…
Two dimensional materials and their heterostructures constitute a promising platform to study correlated electronic states as well as many body physics of excitons. Here, we present experiments that unite these hitherto separate efforts and show how excitons that are dynamically screened by itinerant electrons to form exciton-polarons, can be used as a spectroscopic tool to study interaction-induced incompressible states of electrons. The MoSe$_2$/hBN/MoSe$_2$ heterostructure that we study exhibits a long-period Moiré superlattice as evidenced by coherent-hole tunneling mediated avoided crossi…
Atomically thin materials, like semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, are highly sensitive to the environment. This opens up an opportunity to externally control their properties by changing their surroundings. In this work, high-quality van der Waals heterostructures assembled from hBN-encapsulated monolayer MoS$_2$ are studied with the aid of photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation, and reflectance contrast experiments. We demonstrate that carrier concentration in MoS$_2$ monolayers, arising from charge transfer from impurities in the substrate, can be significantly tuned …
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, with versatile experimentally accessible exciton species, offer an interesting platform for investigating the interaction between excitons and a Fermi sea of charges. Using hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated monolayer MoSe2, we study the impact of charge density tuning on the ground and excited Rydberg states in the atomic layer. Consistent excitonpolaron behavior is revealed in both photoluminescence and reflection spectra of the A exciton 1s (A:1s) Rydberg state, in contrast to previous studies. The A:2s Rydberg state provides an op…
Two-dimensional moiré materials provide a highly tunable platform to investigate strongly correlated electronic states. Such emergent many-body phenomena can be optically probed in moiré systems created by stacking two layers of transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors: optically injected excitons can interact with itinerant carriers occupying narrow moiré bands to form exciton-polarons sensitive to strong correlations. Here, we investigate the behaviour of excitons dressed by a Fermi sea localised by the moiré superlattice of a molybdenum diselenide (MoSe$_2$) / tungsten diselenide (WSe…
We undertook an ab-initio study of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) sandwiched between Ni(111) layers to examine the interface of this material structure. We considered Ni(111)/hBN/Ni(111) with a slab with three Ni atomic layers to determine the exact atom arrangement at the interface. The density functional theory calculations for 36 stacking arrangements, which are doubled with respect to the magnetic alignment of slabs in an anti-parallel configuration (APC) and parallel configuration (PC), revealed that the number of formed weak chemical bonds, in the pd-hybridization between the N and Ni ato…
Atomically thin semi-conductors are characterized by strongly bound excitons which govern the optical properties of the materials below and near the band edge. Efficient conversion of photons into electrical current requires, as a first step, the dissociation of the exciton into free electrons and holes. Here we calculate the dissociation rates of excitons in monolayer MoS$_2$ as a function of an applied in-plane electric field. The dissociation rates are obtained as the inverse lifetime of the resonant states of a two-dimensional Hydrogenic Hamiltonian which describes the exciton within the M…
The electronic exciton polaron is a hypothetical many-body quasiparticle formed by an exciton dressed with a polarized electron-hole cloud in the Fermi sea (FS). It is predicted to display rich many-body physics and unusual roton-like dispersion. Exciton polarons were recently evoked to explain the excitonic spectra of doped monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), but these studies are limited to the ground state. Excited-state exciton polarons can exhibit richer many-body physics due to their larger spatial extent, but detection is challenging due to their inherently weak signals. …
In one-dimensional (1D) metallic systems, the diverging electron susceptibility and electron-phonon coupling collaboratively drive the electrons into a charge density wave (CDW) state. However, strictly 1D system is unstable against perturbations, whose effect on CDW order requires clarification ideally with altered coupling to surroundings. Here, we fabricate such a system with nanowires of Mo6Se6 bundles, which are either attached to edges of monolayer MoSe2 or isolated freely, by post-annealing the preformed MoSe2. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we visualized charge modulations …
Exciton-polaritons offer a versatile platform for realization of all-optical integrated logic gates due to the strong effective optical nonlinearity resulting from the exciton-exciton interactions. In most of the current excitonic materials there exists a direct connection between the exciton robustness to thermal fluctuations and the strength of exciton-exciton interaction, making materials with highest levels of exciton nonlinearity applicable at cryogenic temperatures only. Here, we show that strong polaronic effects, characteristic for perovskite materials, allow to overcome this limitatio…
Strain in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) has led to localized states with exciting optical properties, in particular in view of designing one photon sources. The naturally formed of the MoS2 monolayer deposed on hBN substrate leads to a reduction of the bandgap in the strained region creating a nanobubble. The photogenerated particles are thus confined in the strain-induced potential. Using numerical diagonalization, we simulate the spectra of the confined exciton states, their oscillator strengths and radiative lifetimes. We show that a single state of the confined…
Atomically thin semiconductors can be readily integrated into a wide range of nanophotonic architectures for applications in quantum photonics and novel optoelectronic devices. We report the observation of nonlocal interactions of \textit{free} trions in pristine hBN/MoS$_2$/hBN heterostructures coupled to single mode (Q $>10^4$) quasi 0D nanocavities. The high excitonic and photonic quality of the interaction system stems from our integrated nanofabrication approach simultaneously with the hBN encapsulation and the maximized local cavity field amplitude within the MoS$_2$ monolayer. We observ…

We demonstrate the reduction of the inhomogeneous linewidth of the free excitons in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) MoSe$_{2}$, WSe$_{2}$ and MoS$_{2}$ by encapsulation within few nanometer thick hBN. Encapsulation is shown to result in a significant reduction of the 10K excitonic linewidths down to $\sim3.5 \text{ meV}$ for n-MoSe$_{2}$, $\sim5.0 \text{ meV}$ for p-WSe$_{2}$ and $\sim4.8 \text{ meV}$ for n-MoS$_{2}$. Evidence is obtained that the hBN environment effectively lowers the Fermi level since the relative spectral weight shifts towards the neutral exciton em…
We have fabricated an encapsulated monolayer MoS$_{\mathrm{2}}$ device with metallic ohmic contacts through a pre-patterned hBN layer. In the bulk, we observe an electron mobility as high as 3000 cm$^{\mathrm{2}}$/Vs at a density of 7 $\times$ 10$^{\mathrm{12}}$ cm$^{\mathrm{-2}}$ at a temperature of 1.7 K. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations start at magnetic fields as low as 3.3 T. By realizing a single quantum dot gate structure on top of the hBN we are able to confine electrons in MoS$_{\mathrm{2}}$ and observe the Coulomb blockade effect. By tuning the middle gate voltage we reach a double dot…
The dynamics of a mobile quantum impurity in a degenerate Fermi system is a fundamental problem in many-body physics. The interest in this field has been renewed due to recent ground-breaking experiments with ultra-cold Fermi gases. Optical creation of an exciton or a polariton in a two-dimensional electron system embedded in a microcavity constitutes a new frontier for this field due to an interplay between cavity-coupling favoring ultra-low mass polariton formation and exciton-electron interactions leading to polaron or trion formation. Here, we present cavity spectroscopy of gate-tunable mo…
We study anisotropies of helicity modulus, excitation spectrum, sound velocity and angle-resolved luminescence spectrum in a two-dimensional system of interacting excitons in a periodic potential. Analytical expressions for anisotropic corrections to the quantities characterizing superfluidity are obtained. We consider particularly the case of dipolar excitons in quantum wells. For GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures as well as MoS$_2$/hBN/MoS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$/hBN/WSe$_2$ transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers estimates of the magnitude of the predicted effects are given. We also present a method t…
Squeezing bubbles and impurities out of interlayer spaces by applying force through a few-layer graphene capping layer leads to van der Waals heterostructures with ultra-flat structure free from random electrostatic potential arising from charged impurities. Without the graphene capping layer, a squeezing process with an AFM tip induces applied-force-dependent charges of n ~ 2 x 10^12 cm^-2 uN^-1, resulting in strong intensity of trions in photoluminescence spectra of MoSe2 at low temperature. We found that a hBN/MoSe2/hBN prepared with the "modified nano-squeezing method" shows a strong excit…
We present a comparative theoretical study of magnetic resonance within the polaron pair recombination (PPR) and the triplet exciton-polaron quenching (TPQ) models. Both models have been invoked to interpret the photoluminescence detected magnetic resonance (PLDMR) in $π$-conjugated materials. We show that resonance lineshapes calculated within the two models differ dramatically in several regards. First, in the PPR model, the lineshape exhibits unusual behavior upon increasing the microwave power: it evolves from fully positive at weak power to fully negative at strong power. In contrast, in …
Optical properties of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides are controlled by robust excitons characterized by a very large oscillator strength. Encapsulation of monolayers such as MoSe$_2$ in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) yields narrow optical transitions approaching the homogenous exciton linewidth. We demonstrate that the exciton radiative rate in these van der Waals heterostructures can be tailored by a simple change of the hBN encapsulation layer thickness as a consequence of the Purcell effect. The time-resolved photoluminescence measurements together with cw reflectivity and …
Recently, a contamination-free dry transfer method for graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been reported that allows to directly pick-up graphene from the copper growth substrate using a flake of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), resulting in ultrahigh charge carrier mobility and low overall doping. Here, we report that not only hBN, but also flakes of molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) can be used to dry transfer graphene. This, on one hand, allows for the fabrication of complex van-der-Waals heterostructures using CVD graphene combined with different two-dimensional materials and,…

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has taken the spotlight in the condensed matter community since the discovery of correlated phases at the so-called magic angle. Interestingly, the role of a substrate on the electronic properties of TBG has not been completely elucidated. Up to now, most of the theoretical works carried out in order to understand this effect have been done using continuum models. In this work, we have gone one step ahead and have studied heterostructures of TBG and hBN using an atomistic tight-binding model together with semi-classical molecular dynamics to take into account rel…
Magneto-polaronic effects are considered in electron transport through a single-level vibrating quantum dot subjected to a transverse (to the current flow) magnetic field. It is shown that the effects are most pronounced in the regime of sequential electron tunneling, where a polaronic blockade of the current at low temperatures and an anomalous temperature dependence of the magnetoconductance are predicted. In contrast, for resonant tunneling of polarons the peak conductance is not affected by the magnetic field.
We study the Josephson current through a resonant level coupled to a vibration mode (local Holstein model) in the adiabatic limit of low oscillator frequency. A semiclassical theory is then appropriate and allows us to consider the oscillator dynamics within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for arbitrary electron-vibration couplings. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation has been solved in the most relevant underdamped limit and yields the oscillator distribution function and the Josephson current. Remarkably, a transition from single-well to double-well behavior of the effective oscillator p…
