We propose a generalization of the Minkowski average of two subsets of a Riemannian manifold, in which geodesics are replaced by an arbitrary family of parametrized curves. Under certain assumptions, we characterize families of curves on a Riemannian surface for which a Brunn-Minkowski inequality holds with respect to a given volume form. In particular, we prove that under these assumptions, a family of constant-speed curves on a Riemannian surface satisfies the Brunn-Minkowski inequality with respect to the Riemannian area form if and only if the geodesic curvature of its members is determined by a function $κ$ on the surface, and $κ$ satisfies the inequality $$K + κ^2 - |\nablaκ| \ge 0$$ where $K$ is the Gauss curvature.
Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang recently proved the log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality which is stronger than the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality for two origin-symmetric convex bodies in the plane. This paper establishes the log-Brunn-Minkowski, log-Minkowski, $L_p$-Minkowski and $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for two convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
We study several of the recent conjectures in regards to the role of symmetry in the inequalities of Brunn-Minkowski type, such as the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture of Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang, and the Dimensional Brunn-Minkowski conjecture of Gardner and Zvavitch, in a unified framework. We obtain several new results for these conjectures. We show that when $K\subset L,$ the multiplicative form of the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture holds for Lebesgue measure for $p\geq 1-Cn^{-0.75}$, which improves upon the estimate of Kolesnikov and Milman in the partial case when one body is co…
The curvature dimension condition CD(K,N), pioneered by Sturm and Lott--Villani, is a synthetic notion of having curvature bounded below and dimension bounded above, in the non-smooth setting. This condition implies a suitable generalization of the Brunn--Minkowski inequality, denoted by BM(K,N). In this paper, we address the converse implication in the setting of weighted Riemannian manifolds, proving that BM(K,N) is in fact equivalent to CD(K,N). Our result allows to characterize the curvature dimension condition without using neither the optimal transport nor the differential structure of t…
The aim of this note is to show that the local form of the logarithmic Brunn-Minkowski conjecture holds for zonoids. The proof uses a variant of the Bochner method due to Shenfeld and the author.
By studying $L^p$-combinations of strongly isomorphic polytopes, we prove the equivalence of the $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality conjectured by Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang to the local version of the inequality studied by Colesanti, Livshyts, and Marsiglietti and by Kolesnikov and Milman, settling a conjecture of the latter authors. In addition, we prove the local inequality in dimension $2$, yielding a new proof of the $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality in the plane.
The classical Brunn-Minkowski theory studies the geometry of convex bodies in Euclidean space by use of the Minkowski sum. It originated from H. Brunn's thesis in 1887 and H. Minkowski's paper in 1903. Because there is no universally acknowledged definition of the sum of two sets in hyperbolic space, there has been no Brunn-Minkowski theory in hyperbolic space since 1903. In this paper, for any $p>0$ we introduce a sum of two sets in hyperbolic space, and we call it the hyperbolic $p$-sum. Then we develop a Brunn-Minkowski theory in the hyperbolic space by use of our hyperbolic $p$-sum, and we…
We prove an analogue of the classical Steiner formula for the $L_p$ affine surface area of a Minkowski outer parallel body for any real parameters $p$. We show that the classical Steiner formula and the Steiner formula of Lutwak's dual Brunn Minkowski theory are special cases of this new Steiner formula. This new Steiner formula and its localized versions lead to new curvature measures that have not appeared before in the literature. They have the intrinsic volumes of the classical Brunn Minkowski theory and the dual quermassintegrals of the dual Brunn Minkowski theory as well as special cases…
We prove that no Brunn--Minkowski inequality from the Riemannian theories of curvature-dimension and optimal transportation can by satisfied by a strictly subRiemannian structure. Our proof relies on the same method as for the Heisenberg group together with new investigations by Agrachev, Barillari and Rizzi on ample normal geodesics of subRieman-nian structures and the geodesic dimension attached to them.
This is a survey of results on positivity of vector bundles, inspired by the Brunn-Minkowski and Prékopa theorems. Applications to complex analysis, Kähler geometry and algebraic geometry are also discussed.
We prove that the log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality \begin{equation*} |λK+_0 (1-λ)L|\geq |K|^λ|L|^{1-λ} \end{equation*} (where $|\cdot|$ is the Lebesgue measure and $+_0$ is the so-called log-addition) holds when $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is a ball and $L$ is a symmetric convex body in a suitable $C^2$ neighborhood of $K$.
Kolesnikov-Milman [9] established a local $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for $p\in(1-c/n^{\frac{3}{2}},1).$ Based on their local uniqueness results for the $L_p$-Minkowski problem, we prove in this paper the (global) $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality. Two uniqueness results are also obtained: the first one is for the $L_p$-Minkowski problem when $p\in (1-c/n^{\frac{3}{2}}, 1)$ for general measure with even positive $C^α$ density, and the second one is for the Logarithmic Minkowski problem when the density of measure is a small $C^α$ even perturbation of the uniform density.
We prove that for any semi-norm $\|\cdot\|$ on $\mathbb{R}^n,$ and any symmetric convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n,$ \begin{equation}\label{ineq-abs2} \int_{\partial K} \frac{\|n_x\|^2}{\langle x,n_x\rangle}\leq \frac{1}{|K|}\left(\int_{\partial K} \|n_x\| \right)^2, \end{equation} and characterize the equality cases of this new inequality. The above would also follow from the Log-Brunn-Minkowski conjecture, if the latter was proven, and we believe that it may be of independent interest. We, furthermore, obtain an improvement of this inequality in some cases, involving the Poincare constant of …
The general volume of a star body, a notion that includes the usual volume, the $q$th dual volumes, and many previous types of dual mixed volumes, is introduced. A corresponding new general dual Orlicz curvature measure is defined that specializes to the $(p,q)$-dual curvature measures introduced recently by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang. General variational formulas are established for the general volume of two types of Orlicz linear combinations. One of these is applied to the Minkowski problem for the new general dual Orlicz curvature measure, giving in particular a solution to the Minkowski prob…
In this paper, we study the conjecture of Gardner and Zvavitch from \cite{GZ}, which suggests that the standard Gaussian measure $γ$ enjoys $\frac{1}{n}$-concavity with respect to the Minkowski addition of \textbf{symmetric} convex sets. We prove this fact up to a factor of 2: that is, we show that for symmetric convex $K$ and $L,$ $$ γ(λK+(1-λ)L)^{\frac{1}{2n}}\geq λγ(K)^{\frac{1}{2n}}+(1-λ)γ(L)^{\frac{1}{2n}}. $$ Further, we show that under suitable dimension-free uniform bounds on the Hessian of the potential, the log-concavity of even measures can be strengthened to $p$-concavity, with $p>…
In this paper we revisit the anisotropic isoperimetric and the Brunn-Minkowski inequalities for convex sets. The best known constant $C(n)=Cn^{7}$ depending on the space dimension $n$ in both inequalities is due to Segal [\ref{bib:Seg.}]. We improve that constant to $Cn^6$ for convex sets and to $Cn^5$ for centrally symmetric convex sets. We also conjecture, that the best constant in both inequalities must be of the form $Cn^2,$ i.e., quadratic in $n.$ The tools are the Brenier's mapping from the theory of mass transportation combined with new sharp geometric-arithmetic mean and some algebraic…
We study a Riemannian manifold equipped with a density which satisfies the Bakry--Émery Curvature-Dimension condition (combining a lower bound on its generalized Ricci curvature and an upper bound on its generalized dimension). We first obtain a Poincaré-type inequality on its boundary assuming that the latter is locally-convex; this generalizes a purely Euclidean inequality of Colesanti, originally derived as an infinitesimal form of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, thereby precluding any extensions beyond the Euclidean setting. A dual version for generalized mean-convex boundaries is also obt…
In his Annals of Mathematics paper (2009), Berndtsson proves an important result on the Nakano positivity of holomorphic infinite-rank vector bundles whose fibers are Hilbert spaces consisting of holomorphic $L^2$-functions with respect to a family of weight functions $\left\{e^{-φ(\cdot,t)}\right\}_{t \in U}$, varying in $t \in U \in \mathbb{C}^m$, over a pseudoconvex domain. Using a variant of Hörmander's theorem due to Donnelly and Fefferman, we show that Berndtsson's Nakano positivity result holds under different (in fact, more general) curvature assumptions. This is of particular interest…
The general dual volume $\dveV(K)$ and the general dual Orlicz curvature measure $\deV(K, \cdot)$ were recently introduced for functions $G: (0, \infty)\times \sphere\rightarrow (0, \infty)$ and convex bodies $K$ in $\R^n$ containing the origin in their interiors. We extend $\dveV(K)$ and $\deV(K, \cdot)$ to more general functions $G: [0, \infty)\times \sphere\rightarrow [0, \infty)$ and to compact convex sets $K$ containing the origin (but not necessarily in their interiors). Some basic properties of the general dual volume and of the dual Orlicz curvature measure, such as the continuous depe…
General results on convex bodies are reviewed and used to derive an exact closed-form parametric formula for the Minkowski sum boundary of $m$ arbitrary ellipsoids in $N$-dimensional Euclidean space. Expressions for the principal curvatures of these Minkowski sums are also derived. These results are then used to obtain upper and lower volume bounds for the Minkowski sum of ellipsoids in terms of their defining matrices; the lower bounds are sharper than the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. A reverse isometric inequality for convex bodies is also given.
We establish a sharp upper-bound for the first non-zero even eigenvalue (corresponding to an even eigenfunction) of the Hilbert-Brunn-Minkowski operator associated to a strongly convex $C^2$-smooth origin-symmetric convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our isospectral inequality is centro-affine invariant, attaining equality if and only if $K$ is a (centered) ellipsoid; this is reminiscent of the (non affine invariant) classical Szegö--Weinberger isospectral inequality for the Neumann Laplacian. The new upper-bound complements the conjectural lower-bound, which has been shown to be equivalent to …
