A collection of $n$ random events is said to be $(n - 1)$-wise independent if any $n - 1$ events among them are mutually independent. We characterise all probability measures with respect to which $n$ random events are $(n - 1)$-wise independent. We provide sharp upper and lower bounds on the probability that at least $k$ out of $n$ events with given marginal probabilities occur over these probability measures. The bounds are shown to be computable in polynomial time.
In this note, we prove a tight lower bound on the joint entropy of $n$ unbiased Bernoulli random variables which are $n/2$-wise independent. For general $k$-wise independence, we give new lower bounds by adapting Navon and Samorodnitsky's Fourier proof of the `LP bound' on error correcting codes. This counts as partial progress on a problem asked by Gavinsky and Pudlák.
We define a new independence in non-commutative probability, called $α$-freeness, with respect to a triplet of states. This concept unifies several independences in non-commutative probability, in particular, free, monotone, antimonotone and Boolean ones as well as conditionally free, conditionally monotone and conditionally antimonotone independences. Moreover, the associative law of $α$-freeness is transferred to the other independences. As a consequence, $α$-free cumulants unify the cumulants for free, monotone, antimonotone and Boolean independences. The central limit theorem for $α$-freen…
In this paper, we examine how various notions of independence in non-commutative probability theory arise in bi-free probability. We exhibit how Boolean and monotone independence occur from bi-free pairs of faces and establish a Kac/Loeve Theorem for bi-free independence. In addition, we prove that bi-freeness is preserved under tensoring with matrices. Finally, via combinatorial arguments, we construct partial $R$-transforms in two settings relating the moments and cumulants of a left-right pair of operators.
Prakasa Rao (Studia Sci. Math. Hungar. 11 (1976) 277-282) studied a characterization of probability distributions for linear functions of independent generalized random fields. These results are extended to Q-independent generalized random fields. It is known that independence implies Q-independence but the converse is not true.
We present novel and sharp lower bounds for higher load moments in the classical problem of mapping $M$ balls into $N$ bins by $q$-universal hashing, specialized to the case when $M=N$. As a corollary we prove a tight counterpart for the result about min-entropy condensers due to Dodis, Pietrzak and Wichs (CRYPTO'14), which has found important applications in key derivation. It states that condensing $k$ bits of min-entropy into a $k$-bit string $ε$-close to almost full min-entropy (precisely $ k-\log\log(1/ε)$ bits of entropy) can be achieved by the use of $q$-independent hashing with $q= \lo…
Almost sure linear independence of absolutely continuous Hilbert space-valued random vectors with respect to a special class of Hilbert space probability measures
The notion of probability plays an important role in almost all areas of science and technology. In modern mathematics, however, probability theory means nothing other than measure theory, and the operational characterization of the notion of probability is not established yet. In this paper, based on the toolkit of algorithmic randomness we present an operational characterization of the notion of probability, called an ensemble, for general discrete probability spaces whose sample space is countably infinite. Algorithmic randomness, also known as algorithmic information theory, is a field of …
In this article, the path independent property of additive functionals of McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations with jumps is characterised by nonlinear partial integro-differential equations involving $L$-derivatives with respect to probability measures introduced by P.-L. Lions. Our result extends the recent work [16] by Ren and Wang where their concerned McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations are driven by Brownian motions.
We consider a two-dimensional ruin problem where the surplus process of business lines is modelled by a two-dimensional correlated Brownian motion with drift. We study the ruin function $P(u)$ for the component-wise ruin (that is both business lines are ruined in an infinite-time horizon), where $u$ is the same initial capital for each line. We measure the goodness of the business by analysing the adjustment coefficient, that is the limit of $-\ln P(u)/u$ as $u$ tends to infinity, which depends essentially on the correlation $ρ$ of the two surplus processes. In order to work out the adjustment…

This paper develops sharp bounds on moments of sums of k-wise independent bounded random variables, under constrained average variance. The result closes the problem addressed in part in the previous works of Schmidt et al. and Bellare, Rompel. We The work also discuss discusses other applications of independent interests, such as asymptotically sharp bounds on binomial moments.
We identify general conditions under which regenerative processes with dependent cycles and cycle lengths are asymptotically independent. The result is applied to various models. In particular, independent Lévy processes with dependent secondary jumps at the origin (e.g., workloads of parallel M/G/1 queues with server vacations), the asymptotic performance of real-time status systems with multiple correlated sources measured by the stationary probability of an updated system and asymptotic results for clearing processes with dependent arrivals of inputs and clearings.
We introduce a class of independence relations, which include free, Boolean and monotone independence, in operator valued probability. We show that this class of independence relations have a matricial extension property so that we can easily study their associated convolutions via Voiculescu's fully matricial function theory. Based the matricial extension property, we show that many results can be generalized to multi-variable cases. Besides free, Boolean and monotone independence convolutions, we will focus on two important convolutions, which are orthogonal and subordination additive convol…
In this article, the notion of bi-monotonic independence is introduced as an extension of monotonic independence to the two-faced framework for a family of pairs of algebras in a non-commutative space. The associated cumulants are defined and a moment-cumulant formula is derived in the bi-monotonic setting. In general the bi-monotonic product of states is not a state and the bi-monotonic convolution of probability measures on the plane is not a probability measure. This provides an additional example of how positivity need not be preserved under conditional bi-free convolutions.
Voiculescu's notion of asymptotic free independence is known for a large class of random matrices including independent unitary invariant matrices. This notion is extended for independent random matrices invariant in law by conjugation by permutation matrices. This fact leads naturally to an extension of free probability, formalized under the notions of traffic probability. We first establish this construction for random matrices. We define the traffic distribution of random matrices, which is richer than the *-distribution of free probability. The knowledge of the individual traffic distribut…
We justify and discuss expressions for joint lower and upper expectations in imprecise probability trees, in terms of the sub- and supermartingales that can be associated with such trees. These imprecise probability trees can be seen as discrete-time stochastic processes with finite state sets and transition probabilities that are imprecise, in the sense that they are only known to belong to some convex closed set of probability measures. We derive various properties for their joint lower and upper expectations, and in particular a law of iterated expectations. We then focus on the special cas…
We develop Markov categories as a framework for synthetic probability and statistics, following work of Golubtsov as well as Cho and Jacobs. This means that we treat the following concepts in purely abstract categorical terms: conditioning and disintegration; various versions of conditional independence and its standard properties; conditional products; almost surely; sufficient statistics; versions of theorems on sufficient statistics due to Fisher--Neyman, Basu, and Bahadur. Besides the conceptual clarity offered by our categorical setup, its main advantage is that it provides a uniform trea…
This is the first installment of a series of papers whose aim is to lay a foundation for homotopy probability theory by establishing its basic principles and practices. The notion of a homotopy probability space is an enrichment of the notion of an algebraic probability space with ideas from algebraic homotopy theory. This enrichment uses a characterization of the laws of random variables in a probability space in terms of symmetries of the expectation. The laws of random variables are reinterpreted as invariants of the homotopy types of infinity morphisms between certain homotopy algebras. Th…
While useful probability bounds for $n$ pairwise independent Bernoulli random variables adding up to at least an integer $k$ have been proposed in the literature, none of these bounds are tight in general. In this paper, we provide several results in this direction. Firstly, when $k = 1$, the tightest upper bound on the probability of the union of $n$ pairwise independent events is provided in closed-form for any input marginal probability vector $\mathbf{p} \in [0,1]^n$. To prove the result, we show the existence of a positively correlated Bernoulli random vector with transformed bivariate pr…
We investigate questions related to the notion of traffics introduced by the author C. Male as a noncommutative probability space with numerous additional operations and equipped with the notion of traffic independence. We prove that any sequence of unitarily invariant random matrices that converges in noncommutative distribution converges in distribution of traffics whenever it fulfills some factorization property. We provide an explicit description of the limit which allows to recover and extend some applications (on the freeness from the transposed ensembles by Mingo and Popa and the freene…
We describe a novel way to represent the probability distribution of a random binary string as a mixture having a maximally weighted component associated with independent (though not necessarily identically distributed) Bernoulli characters. We refer to this as the latent independent weight of the probabilistic source producing the string, and derive a combinatorial algorithm to compute it. The decomposition we propose may serve as an alternative to the Boolean paradigm of hypothesis testing, or to assess the fraction of uncorrupted samples originating from a source with independent marginals.…
Unlike classical and free independence, the boolean and monotone notions of independence lack of the property of independent constants. In the scalar case, this leads to restrictions for the central limit theorems, as observed by F. Oravecz. We characterize the property of independent constants from a combinatorial point of view, based on cumulants and set partitions. This characterization also holds for the operator-valued extension. Our considerations lead rather directly to very mild variations of boolean and monotone cumulants, where constants are now independent. These alternative probabi…
We consider probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^{\infty}$ and study optimal transportation mappings for the case of infinite Kantorovich distance. Our examples include 1) quasi-product measures, 2) measures with certain symmetric properties, in particular, exchangeable and stationary measures. We show in the latter case that existence problem for optimal transportation is closely related to ergodicity of the target measure. In particular, we prove existence of the symmetric optimal transportation for a certain class of stationary Gibbs measures.
We generalize the result of block-wise convergence of the Brownian motion on the unitary group $U(nm)$ towards a quantum Lévy process on the unitary dual group $U\langle n\rangle$ when $m\rightarrow\infty$, obtained by the author in a previous paper, by showing that the Brownian motions on the orthogonal group $O(nm)$ and the symplectic group $Sp(nm)$ also converge block-wise to this same quantum Lévy process.
Recently, many streaming algorithms have utilized generalizations of the fact that the expected maximum distance of any $4$-wise independent random walk on a line over $n$ steps is $O(\sqrt{n})$. In this paper, we show that $4$-wise independence is required for all of these algorithms, by constructing a $3$-wise independent random walk with expected maximum distance $Ω(\sqrt{n} \lg n)$ from the origin. We prove that this bound is tight for the first and second moment, and also extract a surprising matrix inequality from these results. Next, we consider a generalization where the steps $X_i$ ar…
Development of metrics for structural data-generating mechanisms is fundamental in machine learning and the related fields. In this paper, we give a general framework to construct metrics on random nonlinear dynamical systems, defined with the Perron-Frobenius operators in vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (vvRKHSs). We employ vvRKHSs to design mathematically manageable metrics and also to introduce operator-valued kernels, which enables us to handle randomness in systems. Our metric provides an extension of the existing metrics for deterministic systems, and gives a specificatio…
