We consider a risk-averse optimal control problem governed by an elliptic variational inequality (VI) subject to random inputs. By deriving KKT-type optimality conditions for a penalised and smoothed problem and studying convergence of the stationary points with respect to the penalisation parameter, we obtain two forms of stationarity conditions. The lack of regularity with respect to the uncertain parameters and complexities induced by the presence of the risk measure give rise to new challenges unique to the stochastic setting. We also propose a path-following stochastic approximation algorithm using variance reduction techniques and demonstrate the algorithm on a modified benchmark problem.
Convex analysis is fundamental to proving inequalities that have a wide variety of applications in economics and mathematics. In this paper we provide Jensen-type inequalities for functions that are, intuitively, "very" convex. These inequalities are simple to apply and can be used to generalize and extend previous results or to derive new results. We apply our inequalities to quantify the notion "more risk averse" provided in \cite{pratt1978risk}. We also apply our results in other applications from different fields, including risk measures, Poisson approximation, moment generating functions,…

We present a method for optimal control of systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) with uncertain parameter fields. We consider an objective function that involves the mean and variance of the control objective, leading to a risk-averse optimal control problem. To make the problem tractable, we invoke a quadratic Taylor series approximation of the control objective with respect to the uncertain parameter. This enables deriving explicit expressions for the mean and variance of the control objective in terms of its gradients and Hessians with respect to the uncertain parameter.…
In this note, we prove that the minimal and maximal solution maps associated to elliptic quasi-variational inequalities of obstacle type are directionally differentiable with respect to the forcing term and for directions that are signed. Along the way, we show that the minimal and maximal solutions can be seen as monotone limits of solutions of certain variational inequalities and that the aforementioned directional derivatives can also be characterised as the monotone limits of sequences of directional derivatives associated to variational inequalities. We conclude the paper with some exampl…
Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) is widely used to account for the preferences of a risk-averse agent in the extreme loss scenarios. To study the effectiveness of randomization in interdiction games with an interdictor that is both risk and ambiguity averse, we introduce a distributionally robust network interdiction game where the interdictor randomizes over the feasible interdiction plans in order to minimize the worst-case CVaR of the flow with respect to both the unknown distribution of the capacity of the arcs and his mixed strategy over interdicted arcs. The flow player, on the contrary,…
We consider a multiperiod stochastic capacitated facility location problem under uncertain demand and budget in each period. Using a scenario tree representation of the uncertainties, we formulate a multistage stochastic integer program to dynamically locate facilities in each period and compare it with a two-stage approach that determines the facility locations up front. In the multistage model, in each stage, a decision maker optimizes facility locations and recourse flows from open facilities to demand sites, to minimize certain risk measures of the cost associated with current facility loc…
This article develops a new algorithm named TTRISK to solve high-dimensional risk-averse optimization problems governed by differential equations (ODEs and/or PDEs) under uncertainty. As an example, we focus on the so-called Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR), but the approach is equally applicable to other coherent risk measures. Both the full and reduced space formulations are considered. The algorithm is based on low rank tensor approximations of random fields discretized using stochastic collocation. To avoid non-smoothness of the objective function underpinning the CVaR, we propose an adapt…
The directional differentiability of the solution map of obstacle type quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) with respect to perturbations on the forcing term is studied. The classical result of Mignot is then extended to the quasi-variational case under assumptions that allow multiple solutions of the QVI. The proof involves selection procedures for the solution set and represents the directional derivative as the limit of a monotonic sequence of directional derivatives associated to specific variational inequalities. Additionally, estimates on the coincidence set and several simplifications …
We analyze the asymptotic behavior for a system of fully nonlinear parabolic and elliptic quasi variational inequalities. These equations are related to robust switching control problems introduced in [3]. We prove that, as time horizon goes to infinity (resp. discount factor goes to zero) the long run average solution to the parabolic system (resp. the limiting discounted solution to the elliptic system) is characterized by a solution of a nonlinear system of ergodic variational inequalities. Our results hold under a dissipativity condition and without any non degeneracy assumption on the dif…
We focus on elliptic quasi-variational inequalities (QVIs) of obstacle type and prove a number of results on the existence of solutions, directional differentiability and optimal control of such QVIs. We give three existence theorems based on an order approach, an iteration scheme and a sequential regularisation through partial differential equations. We show that the solution map taking the source term into the set of solutions of the QVI is directionally differentiable for general data and locally Hadamard differentiable obstacle mappings, thereby extending in particular the results of our p…
In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems governed by semilinear elliptic variational inequalities involving constraints on the state, and more precisely the obstacle problem. Since we adopt a numerical point of view, we first relax the feasible domain of the problem, then using both mathematical programming methods and penalization methods we get optimality conditions with smooth Lagrange multipliers. Some numerical experiments using IPOPT algorithm are presented to verify the efficiency of our approach.
We consider a quasi-variational inequality governed by a moving set. We employ the assumption that the movement of the set has a small Lipschitz constant. Under this requirement, we show that the quasi-variational inequality has a unique solution which depends Lipschitz-continuously on the source term. If the data of the problem is (directionally) differentiable, the solution map is directionally differentiable as well. We also study the optimal control of the quasi-variational inequality and provide necessary optimality conditions of strongly stationary type.
In this paper, we study optimal control problems on the internal energy for a system governed by a class of elliptic boundary hemivariational inequalities with a parameter. The system has been originated by a steady-state heat conduction problem with non-monotone multivalued subdifferential boundary condition on a portion of the boundary of the domain described by the Clarke generalized gradient of a locally Lipschitz function. We prove an existence result for the optimal controls and we show an asymptotic result for the optimal controls and the system states, when the parameter, like a heat t…
We consider an optimal control problem $\cQ$ governed by an elliptic quasivariational inequality with unilateral constraints. The existence of optimal pairs of the problem is a well known result, see \cite{SS}, for instance. We associate to $\cQ$ a new optimal control problem $\wQ$, obtained by perturbing the state inequality (including the set of constraints and the nonlinear operator) and the cost functional, as well. Then, we provide sufficient conditions which guarantee the convergence of solutions of Problem $\wQ$ to a solution of Problem $\cQ$. The proofs are based on convergence results…
We consider a class of risk-averse submodular maximization problems (RASM) where the objective is the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) of a random nondecreasing submodular function at a given risk level. We propose valid inequalities and an exact general method for solving RASM under the assumption that we have an efficient oracle that computes the CVaR of the random function. We demonstrate the proposed method on a stochastic set covering problem that admits an efficient CVaR oracle for the random coverage function.
The paper deals with an eigenvalue problems possessing infinitely many positive and negative eigenvalues. Inequalities for the smallest positive and the largest negative eigenvalues, which have the same properties as the fundamental frequency, are derived. The main question is whether or not the classical isoperimetric inequalities for the fundamental frequency of membranes hold in this case. The arguments are based on the harmonic transplantation for the global results and the shape derivatives (domain variations) for nearly circular domain.
This paper is concerned with the sensitivity analysis of a class of parameterized fixed-point problems that arise in the context of obstacle-type quasi-variational inequalities. We prove that, if the operators in the considered fixed-point equation satisfy a positive superhomogeneity condition, then the maximal and minimal element of the solution set of the problem depend locally Lipschitz continuously on the involved parameters. We further show that, if certain concavity conditions hold, then the maximal solution mapping is Hadamard directionally differentiable and its directional derivatives…
An inequality for the reverse Bossel-Daners inequality is derived by means of the harmonic transplantation and the first shape derivative. This method is then applied to elliptic boundary value problems with inhomogeneous Neumann conditions. The first variation is computed and an isoperimetric inequality is derived for the minimal energy.
This paper is devoted to the theoretical and numerical study of an optimal design problem in high-temperature superconductivity (HTS). The shape optimization problem is to find an optimal superconductor shape which minimizes a certain cost functional under a given target on the electric field over a specific domain of interest. For the governing PDE-model, we consider an elliptic curl-curl variational inequality (VI) of the second kind with an L1-type nonlinearity. In particular, the non-smooth VI character and the involved H(curl)-structure make the corresponding shape sensitivity analysis ch…
